Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up over the next couple of weeks at Barra da Tijuca – a real consistent sandbar setup that’s always got something going on, especially if you’re just starting out or looking for a mellow paddle. The water’s sitting at about 73.8°F , which feels a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – nice bonus.
The first proper call is Monday July 6 afternoon. It’s not firing – only 2.6ft from the south with a super long 19‑second period, but the wind’s a light cross‑shore. The combined energy is moderate (952). Not terrible, but the conditions are marginal. Honestly, it’s more of a warm‑up.
Much better news Tuesday July 7 morning. We get a clean 3.9ft south‑southeast swell, period around 10 seconds, and a light offshore northerly wind – that’s clean, lined‑up stuff. Moderate wave energy (516). This is a genuine good session before the wind clocks round in the arvo and ruins it.
Wednesday and Thursday are mixed – cross‑onshore breezes and only small to waist‑high waves. The morning of Thursday July 9 though, the wind drops to glassy calm with 2.6ft south swell. The energy is moderate (300). It’ll be clean but small – good for a longboard or a beginner.
Next standout window is Saturday July 11 morning. Glassy again, light north‑northwest wind, 3.6ft of south‑east groundswell with a 13‑second period. Energy is moderate (405). The longer period will make the sets a bit more spaced, but the point‑and‑reef nature of the break should handle it. Crowds are possible – it’s a popular spot when it’s clean.
The week of July 13 sees a bump in size. Monday July 13 afternoon kicks up to 6.2ft from the south, but it’s accompanied by strong cross‑onshore wind and high energy (1012). That’s messy and choppy – more for the kite crew. Tuesday stays lumpy.
Now for the real highlight – Tuesday July 21. The morning delivers 6.6ft of south‑southeast swell, period 11 seconds, with clean offshore north‑northeast wind. The combined energy is strong (917). That’s proper head‑high to overhead, well‑shaped waves with good power. The afternoon holds similar size at 6.2ft, still clean with light cross‑offshore wind. Energy remains strong (864). This is the best stretch of the whole outlook – solid, clean, and consistent. Just be aware that anything over 5ft can be a bit much for absolute beginners
