The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s run through what’s on the cards for Arpoador over the next 16 days. Water temp is 72°, which is right about average for the season – no drama there.
It all starts proper on Wednesday the 15th with a solid southerly groundswell. Wednesday morning is the clear winner: clean 5ft SSE swell with an 11-second period, light offshore breeze from the NE, and the combined energy is a solid moderate 514. That’s prime surf, good shape, clean faces. Crowds are often here, so you’ll have company. Thursday morning is still clean with 4ft SE swell and offshore winds, but a bit smaller. Friday morning is similar – 4ft from the SE, offshore, clean. Afternoons turn cross-off and smaller, but still rideable.
The weekend drops off. Saturday the 18th has small 2ft to 3ft swell, mostly cross-off, with weak energy (125 to 174). It’s surfable but only just. Sunday the 19th is a bit better in the arvo with 4ft of short-period E swell (8 seconds), but nothing special. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are tiny – Tuesday arvo goes glassy on 2ft – that’s a full-on flat spell. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are even smaller, with energy dropping to 34 and 49 – poor conditions all round.
After a long quiet patch, Friday the 24th brings a pulse of 3ft S swell with a long 11-second period, but it’s a cross-off breeze and the energy is weak (189). Saturday the 25th is a write-off – 1ft, onshore winds, choppy. Then Sunday the 26th has a spike of 3ft S swell with a very long 12-second period and a big energy jump to 586, but it’s cross-shore with rain and chop – not clean. That’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The final run from Monday the 27th to Wednesday the 29th is the second best window. Monday morning gives 4ft S swell, 11 seconds, cross-off breeze, clean, with energy at 424. Tuesday arvo has 4ft S swell with a 14-second period and energy up to 798 (moderate-strong), but the wind is a moderate cross-off, so it’s a bit lumpy. Wednesday morning the 29th sees 4ft S swell, 12 seconds, offshore NE wind, clean – that’s a nice little session. After that, it fades into small, ordinary waves through the 30th.
If you’re picking the best, it’s Wednesday morning the 15th – no contest. Clean, 5ft, offshore, and that long period SSE groundswell will wrap nicely. For a long-range hopeful, Monday the 27th morning looks promising but less certain. Overall, there’s a gap of poor to flat days from the 20th to the 23rd, so don’t expect much mid-week.
Rusty.
