The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. This is a tricky stretch we’re looking at, and I’ll be straight with you—it’s going to take some patience. The first few days are pretty much a write-off. We’ve got a consistent cross-shore breeze messing up the lines, and the swell is tiny. Tuesday afternoon is just lumpy leftovers, nothing to get excited about. The water’s sitting at 73°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Wednesday and Thursday stay weak. There’s a bit of south in the water, but it’s small and chopped up. The wind keeps switching between cross and cross-off, which isn't helping. You’ll see the wave period is around 10-12 seconds, but the energy is just too low to do anything. Friday morning is still weak, but the afternoon eases off a touch—the wind dies and it cleans up a little. That’s your first real chance to get wet, but it’s only knee-to-waist high. Keep the longboard in the car.

The weekend sees a pulse of energy arrive. Saturday afternoon, that south swell bumps up to 6ft, and the energy jumps, but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. It’s a mess. Sunday morning is bigger, 7ft, with moderate cross-chop, but the standout is Sunday afternoon. The wind swings around to a light SE, almost glassy, and the swell holds at 6ft with a 13-second period. That’s a real window of clean surf. It’s still a bit onshore, but the light air makes it rideable. This is your best bet early on, but it’s looking like a one-off.

Monday and Tuesday are frustrating. The swell stays between 6ft and 7ft, but the wind is cross-shore again, and the period drops a bit. The energy is still significant, but the quality is poor. It’s the kind of surf that looks better from the car park than it is in the water.

The second week really gets messy. Thursday the 13th has a strong cross-shore wind, and Friday the 14th is just plain onshore junk. The swell is there, but it’s blown out. Saturday the 15th has a bit more size, 6ft, but it’s onshore again. Sunday the 16th is bigger, 7ft, with a strong cross-shore wind—that’s not for the faint-hearted, and it’s going to be raw. The following Monday is just more of the same—big but messy.

Now, here’s the one that stands out. Tuesday the 18th, in the morning. We get a clean west-northwest cross-offshore wind, light and glassy. The swell is 5ft from the south with a solid 13-second period. It’s clean. This is the one. After two weeks of onshore junk, this is the window to get some proper, clean waves at Praia das Conchas. It’s not huge, but it’ll be the best shape we’ve seen all stretch. Mark that one in your calendar. The afternoon on that day gets a bit onshore again, so make the most of the morning.

The rest of the window fades out. The last day or two sees a drop in size and a return of the light cross-shore winds. It’s not terrible, but it’s not worth planning around.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a grind, with one clean window on Sunday afternoon. The second week is bigger but messier, with one standout clean morning on Tuesday the 18th. That’s your pick. Everything else is a battle against the wind.

Rusty out.
