The Lowdown
G'day, it's Rusty.
Let's have a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks. We've got a bit of a slow start, with nothing really happening until Wednesday morning. The early part of the week is a write-off, with lumpy, cross-shore winds and messy surf. The good news is that things start to clean up after that, but it's a mixed bag with some real standouts if you pick your moments.
The main focus is Jacaraipe. It's a sandbar setup, fairly consistent, and mostly beginner-friendly. The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no need for a thick wetsuit.
Wednesday the 15th of July is when it first becomes surfable. The morning session sees a 6ft swell from the SE with an 11-second period, and while the cross-shore wind is light, the conditions are still described as marginal. The combined energy is moderate (774). Not a total loss, but not a run to the beach moment.
Thursday the 16th is similar. A 6ft SE swell (11 seconds, 645 energy) with light cross-onshore winds. It's still only marginal. Friday the 17th is even smaller at 5ft, and by the afternoon the wind picks up and the surf turns poor.
Now, Saturday the 18th is where it gets interesting. The morning session is a beauty. We've got a 3ft swell from the SE, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, leaving the waves clean. The energy is moderate (458). It's small, but for a clean, mushy wave on a sandbar, that's a solid session. The afternoon gets blown out again.
Sunday the 19th is okay in the morning. A 4ft E swell with a short 8-second period and clean cross-offshore winds. The energy is dropping to 193, so it's weak. It's surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Then we hit the best two days of the whole forecast. Monday the 20th of July is the real standout. The morning session has a 5ft ENE swell with a 7-second period, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, giving you clean conditions. Combined energy is moderate (420). It's a proper fun-sized wave. The afternoon gets messy, so get in early.
Saturday the 25th of July is another beauty. The morning has a 3ft SSE swell with a 12-second period, light cross-offshore winds, and clean conditions. The energy is moderate (313). It's small, but it's clean and long-period, which will give you some nice lines.
The very long period swells (over 15 seconds) pop up on Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th of July. Thursday morning has a 2ft SSE swell with a 13-second period, and Friday morning has a 3ft SSE swell with a 13-second period and glassy conditions. These are clean, but the waves are tiny. The energy is moderate (221 and 333). For a sandbar, long-period swells can be a bit straight, but with clean conditions, it's a good chance for a longboard or a fun SUP session.
The rest of the second week is a bit of a blur. The mornings are generally cleaner with cross-offshore winds, but the swell direction shifts back to the E and ENE, and the period drops to 7-8 seconds. The energy is weak (around 157 to 303). The afternoons are consistently blown out with strong cross-onshore winds.
Overall, the surf is not huge, but there are some clean, fun windows. The best bet is Monday the 20th of July, morning session at Jacaraipe. It's a solid, clean 5ft with a favourable wind. The runner-up is Saturday the 25th of July, morning session for another clean, smaller wave. If you're a longboarder, the glassy Friday the 24th of July morning is a treat.
Rusty.
