The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Jacaraipe over the next 16 days is a proper mixed bag. We're lookin' at a lot of punchy, short-period windswell, but the winds are going to be the big story, and they're gonna mess things up for most of the run. The overall energy is weak to moderate for the first week, but there's a serious spike of power coming in the second week.

The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no dramas there.

Let's start from the beginning. Thursday the 20th, we have 3.3 ft of swell from the east with a 8-second period, but the wind is a cross-off at 12 mph, so it's clean. The combined energy is only 125 (weak), and it's labelled "poor surf conditions," so it's a skunk. The afternoon turns into a lumpy mess with a cross-on breeze.

Friday the 21st is more of the same – clean in the morning with 3.3 ft of east-northeast swell, but it's weak (100 energy). The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 5.2 ft from the northeast, but the period drops to 6 seconds and the wind goes cross-shore, creating a lumpy cross-chop. Not worth paddling out.

Saturday the 22nd is a write-off. The wind is cross-shore all day, making for messy conditions on a 4.6 ft south swell. The combined energy sits at 192 (weak) and drops to 134 in the arvo.

Sunday the 23rd is small and weak. The swell drops to 2.0 ft in the morning with a 10-second period, but the wind is cross-shore. The energy is weak (127). The afternoon gets even smaller with a 1.6 ft onshore wave. Not much to get excited about.

Monday the 24th is the first glimmer of hope. The morning is glassy – zero wind – with a 2.3 ft south swell (10-second period) and 136 combined energy. The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is a polite way of saying it's small but clean. It's the only real window all week, but it's a beginner-friendly wave.

Now, Tuesday the 25th... this is the standout. The morning session is looking proper. We've got a 4.3 ft south-southeast groundswell with a 16-second period, and the wind is a light cross-off at 6 mph. That's a long-period groundswell, and the combined energy is a meaty 1118 (strong). That's some serious power. The report says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers" – and that's exactly what this is. This is a swell that will groove at Jacaraipe, which is an exposed sandbar. The long period will mean bigger sets, longer lulls, and better-shaped waves. Keep in mind, with that period, it could be a bit too straight for a beach break, but the clean conditions and the energy make it a top pick for anyone who knows what they're doing. The afternoon, though, gets ruined by a cross-on wind.

Wednesday the 26th is a tease. The morning is clean with a 3.6 ft south-southeast swell (14 seconds) and cross-off wind, but it's only rated as "marginal" with 749 energy (moderate). The afternoon, however, is another glass-off with a 3.6 ft swell but a 17-second period and 1017 energy (strong). That's a very long-period groundswell. The report says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers" again. This is a serious session if you can read the long-period lines. It's a very close second to Tuesday morning.

Thursday the 27th morning is clean again – 4.9 ft from the south-southeast with a 15-second period, 1057 energy (strong), and a light cross-off. That's another excellent one for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets spoiled by the cross-on wind.

Friday the 28th morning is a drop-off – 3.3 ft swell (13 seconds) and cross-off wind, but the energy is 543 (moderate) and it's rated "marginal." The afternoon is a total loss with a 6.6 ft cross-on windswell.

From Saturday the 29th all the way through to Monday the 1st of September, the pattern is the same: 4.6 ft to 6.6 ft of short-period windswell from the northeast, with cross-off winds in the mornings but strong cross-onshore and lumpy conditions in the afternoons. The energies are in the 200-400 range (moderate). It's all "poor surf conditions" until the morning of the 1st, which is "expect good surf conditions" with a 5.9 ft northeast swell and a clean cross-off wind. That's a solid 6-foot wave, but it's still short-period windswell, so it'll be a bit crumbly.

The last notable day is Friday the 4th of September. The morning session has a 4.6 ft south-southeast swell with an 8-second period, a light cross-off wind, and a combined energy of 459 (moderate). The report says "expect
