The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the beach.
Look, I'm gonna be straight with you. For the next ten days or so, Jacaraipe is mostly gonna be a write-off for us paddle surfers. The winds are a mess for the first five days, mostly cross or cross-onshore, keeping things lumpy and chunky. It ain't gonna be pretty.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Tuesday, August 25th. We get a fleeting window of glassy conditions in the morning. The swell is a modest 3ft from the SSE, but here’s the kicker – the period is a very long 15 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, with a combined energy reading of (510). That many seconds between sets means the paddle out will be easier, but at a sandbar break like Jacaraipe, a swell that long can straighten out a bit. Still, with zero wind and glassy water, it’s your best chance for a clean, if small, wave. Water temp is sittin' around 73°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Now, if you've got the skills and are willin' to wait, Wednesday, August 26th is the standout. The morning is your window. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the SSE, with an even longer period of 17 seconds. The combined energy jumps way up to (1590). That's strong, powerful stuff. The wind is a light offshore from the north, keeping the faces clean. This is primo juice for experienced surfers, but that size and period at a sandbar might make it challenging for the punters. The afternoon gets blown out by a strong cross-onshore. So, Wednesday morning is the one.
After that, things get messy again. There’s a whole heap of days from the 27th of August through the 6th of September that are just poor. Lots of onshore wind, short-period windswell, and a general lack of quality. You get a brief look on Sunday morning, September 6th, with some clean 4ft swell, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.
Honestly, for now, if the wind is screaming, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The waves are there, but the wind is just not playing ball for us.
Rusty.
