The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Jacaraipe over the next couple of weeks. The water temp is sittin’ at 72°F, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so nothing out of the ordinary there. Gotta be honest, the start of this forecast is a bit of a grind. We’re lookin’ at Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th with tiny, weak swell and pretty ordinary conditions. Not worth botherin’ with. There’s a two-day gap of no real quality.
The real turnin’ point comes on Tuesday mornin’, the 25th of August. That’s where it gets interestin’. We’ve got a 4ft swell rollin’ in from the SSE with a long period of 15 seconds. The combined wave energy is strong at 700, so there’s some proper grunt behind it. And the wind? Glassy as can be from the NNE. It’s gonna be clean. This is the standout session of the whole run—Jacaraipe is a sandbar break that’s exposed to the east, and this groundswell should hold up well. Expect very good surf conditions. The afternoon chops up a bit, so make the most of the mornin’.
Wednesday mornin’ the 26th also looks decent. Still a clean 3ft from the SSE, 13-second period, and a cross-offshore wind from the north keepin’ things tidy. Wave energy is strong again at 602. Not the size of Tuesday, but a solid session for a log or a mid-length.
Now, as we move into Thursday the 27th, the swell bumps up to 6ft from the SSE, period at 16 seconds, and the combined energy is very strong at 1596. The mornin’ has cross-off winds from the north, keepin’ it clean—this is for experienced surfers only, as that size starts to push it for beginners. You’d want to know what you’re doin’ out there.
After that, things get messy. From Friday the 28th through to the first week of September, the wind turns nasty. We get a lot of fresh, cross-shore and cross-on winds with choppy, lumpy conditions. There are a few mornin’ sessions with clean wind but the swell direction starts shifin’ to the ENE with short, weak periods of 7–8 seconds. The quality just isn’t there. There’s a long stretch here where I wouldn’t paddle out.
Then, around the 6th of September—Sunday mornin’—there’s a massive 8ft swell from the south, period at 9 seconds. Combined energy is 1717, which is very strong. But the note says it’s too big for the break. It’s a serious amount of water for a sandbar setup. The winds are glassy, so if you’re a charger and you know the bank, you might find something, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. That afternoon, it’s still over 7ft with onshore wind, so only for the experts.
The end of the run, into the 7th of September, drops back down to 5–6ft but with cross-on winds and only marginal conditions. Not much to get excited about.
So, to sum it up: the absolute best is Tuesday mornin’, the 25th of August. Glassy, long-period groundswell, head-high. Can’t miss it. Wednesday mornin’ the 26th is a solid backup. After that, it’s a waitin’ game with a few powerful but messy swells that are either too windy or too big for the average surfer.
Stay keen, check the banks, and I’ll catch you in the water.
