The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Alright, let’s cut through it. Looking at the next couple of weeks, the surf around here is mostly a waiting game. There’s a lot of junky, wind-blown stuff on the menu before things finally clean up and show some real potential. The standout window is the morning of Tuesday, August 25th, and to a slightly lesser extent, the morning after. You gotta be patient, but there is a payoff coming.
The first real chance to paddle out is shaping up for the morning of Tuesday, August 25th. The jetty at Jacaraipe (Espírito Santo) is where you want to be. We’ve got a clean, glassy morning with light SSW winds, and that southeast swell is starting to roll in. The combined energy is strong, hitting 603, with a 3.9ft swell from the SSE. This is the one that stands out—that long-period groundswell will help it hold up nicely. It’s still a beginner-friendly size, so it won't be scary, but it should have some push to it. Water temps are about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The next morning, Wednesday the 26th, is also worth a look. It’s a bit smaller at 3ft from the SSE, but the energy is still solid, 591, and we’ve got clean, cross-offshore winds from the N. Should be another fun, workable morning. Just remember it might be a touch more inconsistent with that longer period.
Beyond that, the window starts to close. The winds get messy again and the swell swings around to the NE and jumps up in size but gets junky. The rest of the first week and into the second is pretty forgettable. The swell does build, but it’s short-period windswell, and the wind is just constantly on it or cross-shore, making a mess of things. It’s a classic case of waves showing up but no quality to them.
By the time we get to the start of September, there’s still some energy around, but the wind stays onshore and it looks pretty average. Honestly, for the next 16 days, if you can only surf once, make it the morning of the 25th. Otherwise, keep the board in the car and be ready for a bit of a disappointing stretch. The second week is looking less promising overall, so don’t get your hopes up for anything beyond that Tuesday morning.
Keep it salty.
