The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. The charts are in for Jacaraipe, and we've got a real mixed bag over the next 16 days. Let's get into it.
The story starts off a bit rough. We’ve got a decent push of south swell early on, but the wind is just no good. Tuesday the 14th sees a 8ft south swell, but it’s howling out of the SSW at 30 km/h, putting a lumpy cross-chop all over the place. That’s a write-off. The swell drops a bit on Wednesday the 15th, but we're still stuck with onshore winds. It's a frustrating start, but hang tight.
The real trouble is, we have a long stretch of mediocrity. From Tuesday the 14th right through to Sunday the 26th, it’s mostly small, wind-affected, or just plain ordinary. There are glimpses of hope, like Saturday morning the 18th when a light NW cross-off wind cleans up a 3ft SE swell, but the energy is weak (509) and it's tiny. Sunday morning the 19th has a similar clean look with a 5ft E swell (249 energy), but again, it’s not a standout.
The saving grace, and the only true standout on the horizon, arrives late in the window. Mark your calendars for the 28th of July. Tuesday morning is looking like a serious event. We’ve got a big 7ft groundswell from the SSE, with a very long period of 15 seconds. The combined energy is a massive 1985, so there’s plenty of power in the water. The wind is a clean offshore from the north at 20 km/h. That’s a recipe for perfection. But here’s the caveat: that long-period groundswell is going to jack up big, and at 7ft, it’s going to be a heavy, powerful wave. This is strictly for experienced surfers only. The crowd factor at Jacaraipe can be a problem sometimes, and with a swell this good, it’s going to be busy.
The following morning, Wednesday the 29th, is still looking good. The swell drops to 5ft from the same SSE direction, with a 13-second period (1398 energy). The wind is still clean offshore, making for a much more manageable session for the average surfer.
So, the takeaway is a long, slow start with a killer finish. Keep your eyes on that 28th of July, but be prepared for a powerful, expert-only wave. For the rest of the run, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty, signing off.
