The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Jacaraipe for the next couple of weeks.
The first real chance to get wet is Friday morning, July 17th. The week ahead has a few clean windows, but the absolute standout is the end of the run – a big pulse of groundswell on Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th. That’s the one to circle.
Friday morning the 17th starts off glassy, some clouds, a light 5 km/h wind from the NNW. Swell is 5 ft from the ESE with a period of 11 seconds – proper groundswell. Combined energy is moderate at 557. Water temp is about average for this time of year. The waves will be clean and have some punch, though the long period might make the sandbar a bit straight. Still, it’s a good session.
Saturday morning the 18th is glassy again, with a 5 ft swell from the east, but the period is only 7 seconds – that’s weak windswell. It’s surfable, just not special. Sunday morning the 19th is clean with a cross-off breeze and a 5 ft swell, but again short period. Monday and Tuesday mornings are clean starts, but the swell is nothing to write home about.
Then there’s a gap. From Wednesday the 22nd through Saturday the 25th, the afternoons are blown out by strong onshore winds, and the mornings are just ordinary or marginal. Swell drops to 3 ft on Saturday morning. Not much happening.
Now, the real deal. Sunday the 26th of July, morning. Glassy, calm, zero wind. A 5 ft swell from the SSE with a 14-second period – long-period groundswell, strong energy at 865. This is the session. The water is glass, the waves will have real shape and power. Monday the 27th morning is almost as good – glassy, 5 ft from the SSE, 12-second period, energy of 648. Two mornings in a row of proper groundswell.
After that, the energy fades. Tuesday the 28th is clean but small at 3 ft. The end of the month is a mix of clean starts and blown-out afternoons. The very last day, Saturday August 1st, has a solid 6 ft swell from the SSE with a 15-second period and energy of 2208 – that’s strong. Morning is clean, but marginal tide. That’s a big one for the sandbar, only for the experienced.
For beginners, stick to the glassy mornings under 5 ft – Friday the 17th, Saturday the 18th, and Sunday the 19th. The real quality, for anyone who knows their stuff, is Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th. That’s the gold.
Rusty.
