The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow start. The first few days are a write-off, so don’t bother paddling out until we get through the weekend. The first proper chance comes late on Monday the 24th, but it’s marginal at best.
The real standout window is the morning of Tuesday the 25th. Jacaraipe (sandbar) is the spot. We’ve got a clean 4ft SSE swell with a very long period of 15 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and combined wave energy is pumping at 707 (moderate). The wind is light from the north, which is cross-offshore, keeping the faces clean. The water temp is sitting at 73°, which is about normal for this time of year. This is an excellent little window for a beginner-friendly break, but with that long period, watch for it to be a bit straight on the sandbar. Still, it’s the best on offer by a mile.
The Wednesday morning the 26th is another big one for experienced surfers only. The swell jumps to 5ft, again from the SSE, but the period is a massive 17 seconds. The combined energy is a very strong 1315. The wind stays light and cross-offshore from the north. This is a powerful, clean groundswell, but at this size and with that period, it’s for the crew who know what they’re doing. It’s a proper standout.
Things get a bit mixy from the 27th onward. The Thursday morning the 27th has a 5ft swell with a 15-second period, but the wind is a bit stronger, and the conditions are just marginal. The combined energy is still strong at 1159, but it’s not as clean as the days before.
After that, the wind picks up hard from the northeast, ruining the quality for the rest of the run. We get a stretch of poor surf from the 28th of August right through to the start of September. The swell stays around 5ft to 7ft, mostly from the ENE, but the period drops to 6–8 seconds. That’s short-period, wind-affected junk. The wind is either a fresh cross or a cross-onshore, making it lumpy and choppy. For a beach break, this setup is more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfers.
There is a small glimmer on the morning of Saturday the 5th of September. The wind goes glassy, and there’s a 5ft swell from the ENE. The combined energy is 489 (moderate), but the period is only 7 seconds. It’s a clean surface, but it’s still a short-period, weak swell. It’s a “maybe” for a quick session.
So, to sum it up: the standout days are the mornings of the 25th and 26th of August. Tuesday the 25th is the best for the average surfer, and Wednesday the 26th is for the experts. The rest is mostly a battle with the wind, so pick your windows carefully.
Rusty.
