The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s in store for Jacaraipe over the next couple of weeks.
The water’s sitting at 73°, which is about what you’d expect for this time of year – nothing out of the ordinary.
We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up. The first real standout is Saturday morning, the 18th of July. It’s clear skies, a light NNW cross-off breeze at 3 mph, and a 3ft SE groundswell with a 10-second period. That’s clean, glassy surf with moderate wave energy (330), absolutely perfect for a beginner-friendly sandbar. This is the best session of the whole run – head out early.
Saturday afternoon on the 18th, the wind swings ENE and picks up to 12 mph, turning cross-onshore and choppy – not worth it.
Sunday morning the 19th is another solid call. Some clouds, NNW cross-off at 6 mph, and a 5ft east swell with an 8-second period. Combined energy jumps to 474 (moderate), and it’s clean. This is a close second best, but it’s right on the edge of being a bit much for absolute beginners – still fun for anyone comfy in that size.
Sunday afternoon? Forget it – cross-onshore NE wind at 9 mph turns it to chop.
Monday the 20th through Friday the 24th is a stretch of average-to-poor conditions. Mornings are often cross-off and clean, but the swell’s weak, and the energy drops down around 150-200. Not bad for a paddle, but you won’t be pulling in.
Saturday the 25th of July is a gem. Clear skies, dead glassy with a SSW wind at just 3 mph, and a 4ft east swell (8 sec). Wave energy is 252, and it’s glassy – perfect for a relaxed session on the sandbar.
Then there’s a bit of a gap – Sunday the 26th morning is glassy again with a 3ft SSE swell, best for small-wave cruising. After that, it’s mostly cross-onshore chop through to the end of the month.
Now, we get to a real standout, but it’s a big one. On Tuesday the 28th of July, the morning is dead calm – zero wind, glassy conditions. The swell jumps to 8ft from the SSE with a long 11-second period, and the combined energy is huge – 1674. That’s strong. But here’s the thing – this sandbar break is simply too big for that setup. It’s a warning that the waves will be powerful, dumping, and only for experienced surfers. The direction matches well (E optimum, SSE swell), but the average punter should stay out of the water.
The first week of August sees more cross-off mornings with clean faces and rising swell – 6ft on the 1st and 7ft on the 2nd – but energy is climbing into the 800-1153 range, and the wind picks up hard in the afternoons. These are expert-only sessions.
Overall, if you’re a beginner, hit Saturday the 18th or Saturday the 25th. For the more experienced, Tuesday the 28th morning offers a big, clean groundswell, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The long gap between good sessions means you’ve got to pick your day.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
