The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into it.
Right off the bat, this is a slow start for Jacaraipe. The whole first week is pretty flat, with only tiny waves on offer. The only real standout is Tuesday morning, the 25th of August. The swell pushes up to 4 ft from the SSE with a very long period of 15 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind swings offshore from the north, making for clean, lined-up waves. The energy is moderate (592), so there’s a bit of push behind it. This is a rare, clean window in a week of otherwise blown-out or tiny surf. For a beginner-friendly sandbar like this, those conditions are a gem.
The rest of the week is a mess. Afternoon winds are onshore and strong, especially from the 28th onwards, with fresh breezes from the NE making a lumpy mess of things. The swell turns short period (7 seconds) from the 29th, which is junky, windswell stuff. Thursday morning the 27th does have some size (6 ft SSE) and decent energy (1419), but the wind is cross-shore and the forecast is marginal. It’s not a clean, top-tier session.
Into the second week, things get bigger but uglier. From the 3rd of September onwards, the swell ramps up over 7 ft from the S and SSE, but it’s mostly short period (7-8 seconds) and accompanied by fresh to moderate cross-winds. The water is currently 72°F, which is about average for the time of year. The biggest issue for the second week is that the swell gets too big for this break – it’s over 8 ft on the morning of the 3rd, and on multiple days after that, the forecast actually says the swell is predicted to be too big for this spot. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, the wind is often messy.
The best call in the entire 16-day window is Tuesday morning, the 25th of August. It’s the only session that has clean offshore wind, a proper long-period groundswell, and a manageable size. After that, the 26th morning is also clean and decent at 3 ft with good energy, but it’s smaller. The 31st of August and 1st of September mornings have glassy conditions but the swell is windswell (7 seconds) and not very inspiring.
So, to sum it up: if you’ve got a window, paddle out Tuesday 25th morning. The rest is a gamble with wind or size or both. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, a blank run like this is a bit of a bummer, but forecasts can change.
Rusty.
