The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first few days are looking pretty grim with strong cross-shore winds and lumpy, poor surf. We’re talking Monday and Tuesday next week, so the 13th and 14th of July – just don’t bother. The swell is there, up to 8 ft, but it’s short-period windswell (6-9 seconds) and the wind is just ruining it. The combined energy is moderate (315 to 700), but it’s all messy.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday morning, the 15th of July. It’s still a bit marginal, but the wind drops right off to a light cross-onshore breeze (5 km/h) and the swell settles into a cleaner 6 ft from the SE with a much longer 11-second period. The combined energy jumps up to 824 (strong to very strong). It’s not perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Now, the standout for this whole period is Thursday morning, the 16th of July. Glassy conditions. Zero wind. The swell is a clean 5 ft from the SE with an 11-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 601 (strong). This is the best you’re going to get in the first week. The waves will be well-shaped and clean, and with the water temperature sitting at 75°F, it’s bang on average for the time of year, so no wetsuit worries. The break is Jacaraipe, a sandbar setup that’s fairly consistent and exposed to this E swell. Just a heads up, crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have some company. This swell size is fine for most, but beginners might find the 5 ft a little challenging.
After that, the quality drops off again. Friday the 17th is marginal at best, and Saturday the 18th is small and choppy. We go through a few days of small, wind-affected waves from the 19th to the 21st of July. The swell drops to 4 ft to 5 ft, and the period is short (7 seconds), so it’s weak and lumpy. The combined energy is low (181 to 371). Not worth a paddle.
We get a brief window on the morning of Wednesday the 22nd of July. Clean conditions with a light cross-offshore breeze and a 4 ft swell from the ENE. It’s not big, but it’s clean. Still, the combined energy is only 242 (weak), so it’s more of a longboard day.
Then we hit a real flat spell. From Thursday the 23rd through to Saturday the 25th, the swell drops to 2 ft to 3 ft. The mornings are glassy, but the afternoon winds kill it. The combined energy is weak (214 to 365). Not much to get excited about.
The real second-week standout is looking like the morning of Sunday the 26th of July. It’s a bit of a long-range call, so keep an eye on it. We’re looking at a 4 ft swell from the SSE with a very long 13-second period. The combined energy is 416 (moderate to strong). The wind is clean and cross-offshore. This is a true groundswell, and that long period means it will wrap into Jacaraipe with some nice shape. It’s not huge, but it’s quality.
The last call is for the morning of Monday the 27th of July. The swell builds to 5 ft from the SE with a 13-second period, and the combined energy is a huge 897 (very strong). But the wind is a moderate cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit choppy. The morning of Tuesday the 28th of July is the real golden ticket for the very end of the outlook. Glassy conditions, a 4 ft swell from the SE with a 12-second period, and a combined energy of 680 (strong). That’s a clean, powerful, and well-shaped wave. Mark that one on the calendar.
So, overall, the best of the best is the morning of Thursday the 16th of July for the first week, and the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July for the second week. Both are clean, glassy, and have good energy. The rest of the time is a mix of onshore wind and small swell, so pick your windows carefully.
Rusty.
