The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for the Jacaraipe area. Gotta be straight with you, it’s looking like a bit of a quiet stretch for a while, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s break it down.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 72°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first week is pretty grim. Starting Wednesday, August 19th, through to the end of the following week, we’ve got a parade of small, short-period windswell with messy winds. The combined energy flirts with weak numbers (134) and the conditions are just poor. Thursday the 20th through the weekend are all cross-off or cross-shore breezes, but the swell is tiny and weak—barely 3 ft to 5 ft from the E/ENE, with periods of only 6 to 8 seconds. It’s choppy, lumpy, and not worth paddling out for. The afternoon sessions are even worse with fresh cross-onshore winds.
There’s a real gap in quality here. From the 19th to the 24th, there’s nothing I’d recommend. The swell energy is weak (under 200), and the wind is just not cooperating.
Then, around Tuesday, August 25th, we start to see a change. The swell direction swings to the SSE, and the period jumps to 13–14 seconds—that’s proper groundswell. The energy ramps up significantly, hitting 693 on Tuesday morning and then a solid 1045 on Tuesday afternoon. That’s strong wave energy. But there’s a catch: the wind is onshore from the ESE, and the forecast calls it “marginal.” Still, the size is 4 ft to 5 ft from the SSE, and with that long period, Jacaraipe could see some clean lines if the tide and wind line up. It’s a promising but less certain call that far out.
The real standout, though, is further out. On Tuesday, September 1st, the morning session looks like the best bet of the whole run. We’ve got a 6 ft NE swell, with a 7-second period, a clean cross-off breeze from the north, and the combined energy is a solid 324. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” That’s the one to circle on your calendar. Later that same day, the wind swings onshore, so don’t be late.
Then, on Thursday, September 3rd, the afternoon pops up too. A clean 2 ft swell from the S, but with a very long 16-second period, and the energy is 316. The wind is light and cross-off from the north. That’s a glassy, clean afternoon for a log or a longboard—small but perfectly formed.
So, to sum it up: the next ten days or so are mostly a write-off, but stay patient. The 25th of August offers a glimpse of power, but the dawn of September 1st is the real highlight. Surf’s eventually coming.
Rusty.
