The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the surf outlook for Jacaraipe. It’s a sandbar setup that’s pretty beginner-friendly most of the time, but we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming our way over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, the first few days are a bit of a write-off for a proper paddle session. The swell is small and short-period, coming from the east and northeast, and the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, which is just going to mess up the face. The wave energy is weak to moderate (around 197), and the conditions are just lumpy and choppy. You’d be fighting it more than surfing it.

The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday, the 24th of August, in the morning. It’s glassy, which is a major positive, with a light breeze and a small, clean-looking swell from the south at 2ft with a 10-second period. It’s not big, but for a beginner-friendly spot like this, those glassy conditions can make for some fun, user-friendly waves. The energy is still low (106), but it’s a start.

Then, without a doubt, the standout period is Tuesday the 25th of August through to Thursday the 27th. We’ve got a proper groundswell arriving from the south-southeast. Tuesday morning is the pick of the bunch: glassy conditions, a clean 4ft swell with a very long, powerful 16-second period. The wave energy jumps right up to 642 – that’s a solid pulse of energy. This is going to be a good, clean, well-shaped wave. Just a heads-up, with that long period (over 15 seconds) at a beach break, it can sometimes be a bit straight and close out, but with the sandbar setup, there should be some good peaks. Wednesday morning is also a contender with glassy conditions, 3ft swell and an even longer 17-second period, and the energy is up at 862. Thursday morning has a bit of onshore wind and a risk of thunderstorms, but the swell is still there at 4ft from the SSE with a 14-second period. The energy is a massive 813.

After that, the quality drops off again. The end of August and into September is a bit of a mess. The wind picks up, mostly cross or cross-off, but the swell shifts back to a weaker, short-period east/northeast direction. The wave energy is moderate (between 122 and 379), and the notes are all “poor surf conditions” or “marginal.” There’s a clean-looking morning on the 31st of August with 5ft from the NE, but the wind is a gentle offshore, so it might be worth a look. The same goes for the morning of the 1st of September, with 6ft from the NE but a moderate offshore breeze. The swell is getting a bit bigger here, but the period is short (7 seconds), so it won’t have the same punch or shape as the long-period stuff from the week before. For beginners, any swell over 5ft can start to get a bit challenging, so keep that in mind.

The water temperature is sitting at 73°F, which is just about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

So, to wrap it up: Don’t bother with this weekend. The real window is from Monday the 24th for a tiny glassy session, but the absolute best bet is Tuesday and Wednesday morning, the 25th and 26th of August. That’s where the clean, long-period groundswell and glassy wind will line up for some proper fun. The second week looks inconsistent and wind-affected, so if you can, get on it early.

Rusty.
