The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Jacaraipe’s got cookin' over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the start of this run is a tough one. There’s a real flat spell with nothing worth paddling out for from now until late Monday the 24th of August. The wind is just too messy and the swell is weak and junky. You're lookin' at a solid three days of poor conditions, with combined wave energy barely hittin' 209 (moderate energy) at best, but the wind is fresh and cross-shore, ruining any chance of a clean wave.
Monday morning the 24th, things finally start to look a little more human. The wind drops right off to glassy, with a tiny 1 ft SSE swell creepin' in, period up at 13 seconds. It's a long-period groundswell – better for a reef or point, but at this size it’s surfable. Water temp is 73°, pretty much average for the time of year. The energy is still weak (118), so don’t expect much push.
The standout window really opens up on Wednesday the 26th of August. That morning, Jacaraipe is lookin’ clean with a light north wind blowin’ cross-off. We’ve got a solid 4 ft swell rollin’ in from the SSE with a very long 17-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is strong at 1017. This is the pick of the entire outlook. The waves will have good shape and power, but at that size and period, it's more for experienced surfers who can handle the longer waits between sets.
Then Thursday morning the 27th is another beauty. Glassy conditions again, with a 5 ft SSE swell, 14-second period, and combined energy crankin’ at 1125. That’s strong wave energy. Again, the size and period mean it's best for the crew who know what they’re doin’. The afternoon falls apart with a cross-onshore wind.
After that, it gets pretty average again. A lot of fresh north-east winds and lumpy cross-shore chop dominate the rest of the run. Saturday the 5th of September morning actually shows a big 8 ft NNE swell with clean conditions and moderate energy (1123), but that’s way too big for Jacaraipe – the forecast notes it’s too big for the break, so I’d steer clear unless you’re a machine.
So, for the whole 16-day run, the only true standouts are the mornings of Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th. Get on it if you can, because the rest of the fortnight is mostly blown out or flat.
Rusty.
