The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, looking at what's on the menu for Jacaraipe over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it's a pretty grim run for most of it. The first week and a half is basically a write-off with a lot of poor surf conditions, so we're looking at a big gap until things start to look even remotely interesting.
We do have a couple of fleeting moments, but honestly, nothing is a true standout. The best chance for a wave comes in much later, but it comes with a massive caveat.
Right now, straight up, we're in a dry spell. From Wednesday the 19th of August all the way through to Monday the 24th of August, the surf is consistently poor. The wind is a mess, mostly cross or cross-on, and the swell is weak and short period. You'll be fighting a lumpy, choppy ocean with barely any energy. The combined energy is barely cracking 200 (134-240), which is weak sauce. Forget about it for a paddle.
There's a tiny flicker on Sunday the 23rd morning with a 3ft S swell, but it's still a poor surf and marginal at best. Not worth getting wet for.
The first real shift comes late on Tuesday the 25th of August. A new, longer period swell pushes in from the SSE, 5ft with a 13-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 800. That's moderate energy, and it's clean with light offshore winds. This is a proper groundswell, but it's still only a marginal call. The period is long enough that at a sandbar break like Jacaraipe, it might be a bit too straight and fat, needing a good bank to wrap around. It's a "maybe" session, not a "must-go."
Then, Wednesday the 26th of August morning is the closest we get to a winner. The swell has dropped to 3ft, but it's still from the SSE with a long 13-second period, and the wind is a clean offshore from the N. The combined energy is still a solid 714, and the forecast says "expect very good surf conditions." The water temp is about average for this time of year. This is your one real window. But it's small, and the good wind only lasts the morning. By the afternoon, the onshore kicks in and ruins it.
The last week of the run is a mess of poor quality again. The only other thing to note is Saturday the 29th of August morning. The swell is 7ft from the NE, but the wind is a strong 18 mph offshore. The forecast flat out says it's "too big for this break." At 7ft, that's expert territory, and with a short 8-second period, it's going to be a washing machine. For a sandbar, that's probably a close-out. The combined energy is 544, but the size makes it a no-go for most. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
In short, if you're desperate, aim for the morning of Tuesday the 25th, but the real shot is the morning of Wednesday the 26th of August. Get it before the wind switches. Otherwise, this is a long, blank run. It's a tough hand for Jacaraipe.
Rusty.
