The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Jacaraipe over the next couple of weeks.
That first Friday morning, July 17th, is a beauty. The water’s a very pleasant 74° – about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The swell is 5 ft from the SE with a period of 11 seconds, a proper groundswell, packing moderate energy (479). The wind is glassy from the WNW, right out of the optimum direction for this sandbar, and it’s all lining up. The only thing is, this spot is a beginner-friendly sandbar, and with the crowd levels listed as “sometimes,” you might have a few mates out, but it’s well worth it. This Friday morning is the standout.
The next morning, Saturday July 18th, is also clean – glassy again with 3 ft of swell and a solid 10-second period. After that, the afternoons get chopped out by a cross-onshore breeze, so mornings are where it’s at.
Sunday July 19th morning has 5 ft from the east, period 8 seconds (short), and a clean cross-off wind. It’s surfable but not as special as Friday. The following Monday and Tuesday mornings (July 20th and 21st) are clean too, but the swell stays around 4 ft to 5 ft with short period. The energy is dropping into the moderate range (below 226).
From Wednesday July 22nd onward, the morning winds are cross-off but the swell is small and the period is short, so you’re looking at a few days of clean but ordinary surf. Then comes a big gap of marginal to poor surf through the end of July.
Now, looking further out, the last week of July and first of August gets a massive pulse of energy. On July 29th, the combined energy jumps to 1409 – that’s strong. The swell hits 8 ft with a 11-second period from the SSE, but the wind is cross-shore and the forecast says it’s too big for this break. This is expert territory. Same situation on July 30th, 31st, and August 1st: the swell is over 8 ft, long period (13 to 14 seconds), and the energy is very strong (over 2000 and up to 3777). The wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, and the break is being overwhelmed. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing at that size.
In summary, the best window is the Friday July 17th morning session, with Saturday July 18th morning as a decent backup. There’s a long gap of ordinary-to-poor conditions after that until the end of the month, and then a big swell that’s just too big for this spot.
Rusty.
