The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this outlook for Barrinha is a bit of a mixed bag with a whole lot of average to get through. Most of the next couple of weeks are going to have you scratching your head, with onshore winds messing things up for the most part. There are a couple of small windows that might be worth a look, but you’ll need to pick your moments carefully.
We kick off from Friday the 17th, and it's a write-off. A 4ft east-southeast swell, but that ENE wind at 12 mph is smashing it sideways – cross-on and choppy. The water’s a balmy 74°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year.
That dead run continues all through the weekend and into the next week. The swell sticks around waist-high from the east, but the wind just won’t play ball – mostly cross-onshore from the northeast, and sometimes hitting 19 mph. The wave energy is weak to moderate (139 to 342 in the combined energy readings). Not worth paddling out for a single session.
Now, jump ahead to Thursday the 23rd. We see a tiny window on the morning. There’s a 4ft swell from the north, but the period is a short 5 seconds – that’s just windswell, no power behind it. The combined energy is a weak 69. The standout here is the wind: glassy. Completely flat conditions on the surface. It’ll be surfable, but very ordinary. If you’re desperate for a skate, this is your one chance so far.
After that, it’s back to the same story. Strong northeast winds chop up small swells right through to the end of July. There is a brief moment Monday afternoon the 27th with a clean, moderate offshore wind from the south, but the swell is only 2ft. The combined energy reading is 123 – weak. It’ll be clean but tiny. A longboard session at best.
Then, we get into early August. The real highlight, and honestly the only standout in the whole period, is Friday the 31st of July morning. This is the one to circle. The swell jumps to a solid 5ft from the southeast, with a period of 10 seconds – decent groundswell energy, and the combined energy is a punchy 417 (moderate). The wind is light from the southeast, giving a clean cross-offshore texture. It’s not huge, but for a spot that’s been hammered by wind for two weeks, this is your best shot. Expect some crowds at Barrinha.
Later that same afternoon, it builds to 5ft but the wind turns cross-shore with ripples – less ideal. Saturday the 1st of August sees the swell staying at 5ft from the southeast, but the northeast wind slams back in at 19 mph, turning it into a messy, lumpy affair. Not worth it.
So, overall: one real standout morning on Friday the 31st. Everything else is marginal or flat-out poor. Don’t hold your breath for the second week – the conditions stay inconsistent and wind-affected. Keep an eye on that Friday though; it might just deliver.
Rusty.
