The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks around Barrinha.
Straight up, it’s a quiet start. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf through the first week, with nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is weak and short-period, mostly around 3ft to 5ft from the east, but the wind is just shocking – cross-on or onshore most of the time, chopping everything up. The water is sitting at 73°, which is about normal for the time of year.
The first real chance of something clean comes on Thursday, July 24th, in the afternoon. We’ve got a little 3ft east swell with an 8-second period, and for the first time, the wind swings offshore from the south. It’s not big, but it’s clean. That’s about as good as it gets for a while. The combined energy is only 89 (weak), so don’t expect any power.
Friday, July 25th, keeps that trend going. Morning sees 2ft east swell, 8 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze from the SSW. Real clean conditions. The energy is 86 (weak). The afternoon is similar, just a bit smaller at 2ft. It’s small, but it’s workable.
Saturday, July 26th, offers the best morning of the lot. We’ve got 2ft from the SSE, 9 seconds, with glassy cross-off wind from the SSW at only 3 mph. The combined energy nudges up to 101 (moderate). That’s a fun little window – clean, light wind, and a touch more energy. The afternoon goes cross-shore and loses the quality.
The rest of the week into early August is a mixed bag. Monday July 28th has clean conditions again, with 4ft from the SE, 8 seconds, and a light cross-off breeze. The energy is 212 (moderate). It’s surfable but nothing special. Tuesday July 29th is similar, around 4ft, also clean.
The standout for the whole outlook? It’s got to be the morning of July 26th. The water is normal temp, the wind is near glassy, the swell is 2ft from the SSE, and the waves will be clean and lined up. It’s small, but it’s the cleanest window we’ve got. Crowds are not mentioned, so it might be a quiet one.
Later in the first week of August, Sunday August 2nd afternoon has a tiny 1.0ft SSW swell with a 10-second period and offshore wind – but it’s too small to do much with.
Honestly, if you’re a beginner, the swell stays under 5ft throughout, so it’s not intimidating. But it’s not really firing for anyone. The best bet is to hit the July 26th morning session and enjoy the clean lines.
Rusty.
