The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our local stretch. It’s a bit of a slow burn to start, but there’s a solid window of clean waves coming up that’ll make it worth the wait.
Right now, we’re in a flat spell. The first few days are offering nothing but tiny, weak lines with poor conditions. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a write-off for any real surfing. The wind is either too strong or the swell is just too small to bother with. You can hang the board up for the weekend.
Things start to whisper to life on Monday the 24th. Still small, with 1ft from the SSE, but the wind is light and offshore, making for clean conditions. The energy is still weak, only around 96. It’s better than a kick in the pants, but you’re not going to be getting your hair wet on anything special.
The real standout hits from Tuesday the 25th through to Thursday the 27th. This is where we get our best window. Tuesday morning brings a jump to 3ft from the SSE, with a period stretching to 14 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell offering some real energy (388). The wind is glassy out of the SW, so the conditions at Barrinha are going to be smooth as a mirror. This is the one to circle. The crowd factor is "sometimes" here, so you might have a few friends out, but it’s worth it.
Wednesday the 26th is the peak. The swell builds to 3ft in the morning and 4ft in the afternoon, still SSE, with a very long period of 17 seconds. The energy is pumping at 689 to 726. The wind goes dead calm in the morning—glassy perfection—and then a light cross-offshore in the afternoon. This is going to be the best shape of the run. Long lines, clean faces. Do not miss this.
Thursday the 27th still has the size (4ft) and the long period (15 seconds), but the wind swings onshore from the north in the morning, which will mess up the surface. The afternoon gets messy with a fresh cross-onshore. It’s a fade-out after the high point of Wednesday.
We then drop into a long, flat, and windy funk from Friday the 28th all the way through to Tuesday the 3rd of September. Strong winds, tiny waves, and poor conditions. That’s a solid week of nothing. Don’t bother checking the buoys; just go do something else.
Then, on Wednesday the 4th of September, we get a late burst. The swell jumps to 6ft from the ESE. It’s short period, only 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and powerful, but the energy is strong (621). The wind is offshore and light, so it’ll be clean. This is a bit of a wildcard for the experts, as that size is pushing into the big stuff. It’s a promising late swing, but it’s a long way off, so keep an eye on it.
So, to wrap it up: the first two weeks are mostly a bust. The clear winner is the window from Tuesday the 25th to Wednesday the 26th of August at Barrinha. Mark it in your calendar. Clean, glassy, and a solid SSE groundswell. That’s the call.
Rusty.
