The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the local sandbar. Let's be straight up: the next couple of weeks are gonna test your patience. We've got a few little windows, but nothing that's gonna have you calling in sick to work. The ocean's got a bit of a lazy pulse, mostly small and finicky.

We start on Sunday the 23rd of August. Early doors, we're looking at Barrinha. It's a fairly consistent little spot, fairly exposed to the south swell. The water temp's sitting pretty average for this time of year. Sunday morning you'll find tiny 1ft waves coming from the SSE with an 11-second period. The combined energy is a weak 116, so don't expect much push. The wind's a light cross-off from the SW, so it'll be clean, but honestly, it's just ordinary. Not worth paddling out for. By the afternoon, the wind swings to the east at 15 km/h and it goes cross, making it messy.

Monday the 24th is your best chance in this first week. Early morning, it's glassy. Zero wind. The swell is still a meager 1ft from the SSE, but with that long 11-second period. It's clean as a whistle, but you're fighting for scraps. The energy is weak at 76. If you've got a log and you just want to feel the glide, you could make something of it, but don't expect a wave you can actually turn on.

Tuesday the 25th sees the swell bump up to 3ft from the SSE, with a very long 14-second period. The energy jumps to a moderate 292. The morning has a light offshore from the NNE, which is promising. The conditions are "unknown," but that offshore wind is a major positive. This could be the standout of the week. That longer period means it'll be more powerful, but at a beach break like this, those long-period swells can sometimes be a bit too straight. It'll be a bit more challenging to find a good pocket, but if you're patient, there might be a clean little runner.

Wednesday the 26th is the next one to watch. The swell builds to 3ft, then 4ft in the afternoon, still from the SSE, and the period is a very long 17 seconds. The energy is strong at 611. Wednesday morning is another light offshore from the north, but the conditions are unknown again. The afternoon is cross-shore from the ENE. That 4ft wave with 16-second period is proper groundswell. This is the biggest, most powerful swell of the week, but the wind is a factor. The morning window could be the one if the wind holds.

From Thursday the 27th onward, it gets ugly. The wind picks up, the swell drops, and we're looking at a string of "poor surf conditions" all the way through to the end of the month. There's a big gap of nothing worth mentioning from the 28th of August all the way through to the 3rd of September. That's nearly a week of flat, blown-out junk.

There is a tiny glimmer in the second week. On Friday the 4th of September, we get another morning of glassy conditions, with a 4ft swell from the east. The period is short, only 8 seconds, so it'll be a bit weak and choppy, but the energy is a moderate 180. The wind is calm. It's glassy. It's surfable, but very ordinary. Then it's back to the wind.

So, for this forecast, the absolute standouts are Tuesday morning the 25th and Wednesday morning the 26th of August at Barrinha. Tuesday offers clean 3ft waves with a long-period pulse and offshore wind. Wednesday offers the biggest swell of the period, 3-4ft with that 17-second period, but you'll need to be out early before the wind shifts. Those are your windows. Don't sleep on 'em.

This is Rusty, signing off.
