The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here, looking at the surf charts for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but there are a couple of windows that’ll get the stoke going.
Right off the bat, we’re looking at a pretty flat start. The first few days are a write-off, with nothing but junk and tiny dribble. We’ve got to wait until the morning of Sunday the 23rd of August to see anything remotely worth paddling out for. That’s a long stretch of nothing.
The first real glimmer of hope comes in on Sunday the 23rd. The morning at Barrinha is looking like a nice, quiet session. The wind is light and offshore from the SSW, keeping things clean. We’re only talking about knee-high swell at 1 ft from the SSE, with a period of 10 seconds. The energy is weak (76), so you won’t be getting barrelled, but it’s a good one for a log or a longboard. The water is about average for this time of year.
Monday the 24th of August keeps that vibe going. The morning is the pick of the early part of the week. The wind drops to glassy, and you’ve got that same small, clean 1 ft swell from the SSE. The energy is still weak (73), but with the wind off the charts, it’s a beautiful morning for a long, slow glide. The afternoon sees a bit more period (13 seconds) and a touch more energy (115), but still small.
Now, hold onto your board. Things start to get really interesting on Tuesday the 25th of August. The morning shows a jump in size to a solid 3 ft from the SSE, but the period is a very long 16 seconds. That kind of period at a beach break like Barrinha can make things a bit fat and straight, but the energy is ramping up (699). It’s a marginal call, but the potential is there. The water is still about average for the time of year.
Wednesday the 26th of August afternoon is the standout session of the whole forecast. The wind swings offshore from the SSW, turning the conditions clean. The swell is holding at 3 ft from the SSE, but the period is an incredible 17 seconds. This is a proper groundswell with a huge amount of energy behind it (640). This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s not a day for beginners, but for the experienced crew, Barrinha will have some proper lines.
Thursday the 27th of August still has good size, with 4 ft swell from the SSE, but the wind is a bit messy in the morning, creating some ripples. The energy is still very strong (678), but it’s not as clean as Wednesday afternoon.
After that, the wind turns onshore and the swell drops off quickly. From Friday the 28th of August onwards, it’s back to small, choppy, and blown-out junk. The last week of the forecast is a ghost town for surf, all the way through to the 4th of September. The morning of Friday the 4th of September is flat calm and glassy, but the swell is just a weak 4 ft with a short period. It’s not a serious option.
So, the one to get amped for is Wednesday afternoon the 26th of August. If you're an intermediate to expert, that's your window. Otherwise, the glassy mornings of Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are perfect for a cruisy, clean session.
Rusty.
