Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Velzyland (Brazil). The outlook kicks off on Saturday the 11th of July with a real tease. The early session is the one to get keen on – crystal clear skies, dead calm, absolutely glassy conditions, and a clean 4 ft groundswell out of the southeast with a solid 13-second period pushing through. Water temp is sitting at 74°, bang on normal for the time of year. The combined swell energy is a moderate 409, so there’s enough push. That glassy morning window is the standout for the whole forecast by a long shot; it’s the only time everything lines up properly. Good luck getting a park though – crowds are a known thing here, so get in early.

That perfect calm doesn’t last. By Saturday afternoon, the wind swings cross-onshore from the southeast at 6 mph and it all goes flat and bumpy. Not worth paddling out. Sunday the 12th stays clean with a cross-off shore breeze, but the swell drops into the 3–3 ft range with 12-second periods, and the energy dips to 246–294. It’s small and marginal, more of a longboard cruise than anything to get excited about.

Monday the 13th gets blown out. Fresh cross-shore winds at 19–22 mph, short 6-second windswell bumping to 4–4 ft, but it’s lumpy and poor. That setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right there.

Tuesday the 14th is the same story – decent 4–4 ft SE groundswell with 13-second periods on offer, combined energy hitting 447 and 533, but the wind kills it. Cross-off in the morning, strong cross in the arvo. Looks clean early but the forecast calls it poor. Wednesday the 15th sees the swell build to 5 ft from the southeast, 12-second period, 683–689 combined energy, but again the wind is cross or cross-onshore. Marginal.

Here’s the next potential highlight: early Thursday the 16th. Another glassy morning – light airs, near calm – and a solid 6 ft southeast groundswell with 12-second period. Combined energy jumps to 971. This is the second best window. It’s pushing toward the bigger end, so if you’re a beginner it’s going to feel like a handful. For the crew who know what they’re doing, that’s the call. The arvo goes to shite with a cross-onshore kick up to 12 mph.

Friday the 17th morning is clean with a light cross-off breeze and 5 ft SE swell at 12 seconds (597 combined energy), and the forecast calls it “very good” – worth a paddle if you missed the earlier windows.

After that, it’s a long, drawn-out comedown. From Saturday the 18th onward right through to the end of the 16-day run on Sunday the 26th, the swell drops under 3 ft most days, the period shortens to 7–8 seconds, and the combined energy often sits below 200. Winds are nearly always cross or cross-onshore, often fresh, and the conditions are described as poor to ordinary. There’s a stretch of about 8–9 days where nothing really offers a decent surf. Not the best run for the area, but these flat spells do happen.

Best bets: get on the Saturday 11th morning session or the Thursday 16th morning. Everything else is a gamble or a skip.

Rusty.
