Grab your board, let’s see what’s on the menu here. We’re looking at a classic case of *almost but not quite* across the whole window. The overall pattern is a bit frustrating – small to modest east-southeast swell trying to push through, but the winds just don’t want to cooperate for the most part. There’s one clear standout, a real gem, but it’s surrounded by a lot of days that’ll have you paddling back to the beach feeling frothy for more.
The real action kicks off Friday the 3rd of July morning out at Velzyland (Brazil) . We’ve got a clean 4 ft swell from the east running at 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 201, enough to push you down the line. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the north at 9 mph, which is gonna keep the surface glassy. This is the best surf on offer. Get out there early. By the afternoon, the wind cranks up to 19 mph from the east-northeast and it gets chopped out.
Saturday the 4th of July starts with a glassy, calm morning – wind is zero from the west. The swell is a touch smaller, 3 ft east at 9 seconds (moderate energy of 194). It’s surfable, but the lack of a proper wind push and the smaller size means it will be very ordinary. Good for a longboard if you’ve got one, but not the standout.
After that, the next week and a half looks pretty grim for a quality surf. From Sunday the 5th of July right through to Thursday the 16th of July, the swell stays small, mostly under 3 ft, and the wind is either onshore, cross-onshore, or just messy. The energy values are weak, often dipping into double digits (like 24 on Wednesday the 15th). We get a couple of brief windows of clean conditions, like Tuesday the 7th of July morning with a cross-offshore from the north at 12 mph and 3 ft southeast swell – combined energy of 230 – which is labelled as marginal, probably due to tricky tide or just not enough push. Saturday the 11th of July morning looks clean again with a cross-offshore north wind at 12 mph, but the swell is only 2 ft from the east-southeast, period a reasonable 13 seconds, giving a moderate energy of 182. It’ll be clean, but small.
The only other flicker of hope comes on Monday the 13th of July afternoon. The wind drops to glassy from the northwest, and we have a 3 ft southeast swell at 11 seconds. Combined energy is 170, so moderate. Again, clean but very ordinary in size.
Heading into the second week, there’s a tiny spike of longer-period energy. Friday the 17th of July morning has a 1 ft swell from the southeast at a very long 16 seconds. Combined energy is weak at 103. That long period will mean long lulls, and it’ll break super straight on the beach. Not your friend out there.
If you’ve got a kite, the afternoons with the cross-onshore blow and a bit of chop could be fun, but for a paddle surfer, the honest truth is this: Friday the 3rd morning is your window. Don’t miss it.
Rusty.
