The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our local patch. Let’s be straight with you: this is a tough stretch. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but the surf is going to be a real struggle for the most part. There’s a long dry spell coming, so don’t rush to wax up just yet.
Right now, through the middle of the week and into the weekend, it’s pretty grim. We’re looking at weak, short-period windswell from the ESE, mostly around 3ft to 5ft, but the wind is a constant problem. It’s a lot of cross-onshore and lumpy conditions, especially in the afternoons. The combined energy is weak, sitting between 129 and 259 (259), so there’s just no juice. The water temp is sitting at 73°, which is pretty average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
The real kicker is a run of several days with basically no surf to speak of from around the 21st of August through the 25th of August. We’re talking tiny, weak pulses, barely a ripple. The combined energy drops to numbers like 2, 8, and 30, and the swell period is either short or just doesn’t have any weight. It’s a big gap, so save your energy.
Then, just when you’re about to give up, the charts start to show a glimmer of hope. On Wednesday morning, the 26th of August, things change. We see a jump in the swell. The morning session looks like the standout. Swell comes in from the East at 6ft, with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 472 (472) – that’s moderate energy, a real sign of life. The wind is light and variable from the NNE, switching to a cross-off, and the report says "clean." That’s a major positive. The wave comment says "expect good surf conditions." This is the best window we’ve got. The conditions are glassy, and that 6ft East swell will be working. It’s a bit on the punchy side for beginners, but for the intermediates, it’s the pick of the whole forecast.
The rest of the second week after that is a bit of a mixed bag. The 27th and 28th show some swell, around 4ft to 5ft, but the wind is back to being a problem, with cross-onshore and moderate to fresh breezes. The 31st of August and 1st of September show some longer period swell from the SSE, with periods of 17-18 seconds, but the size is small (2ft to 3ft) and the wind is messy, so it’s not really a goer. The energy is moderate (168 to 390), but it’s not going to translate into clean, rideable waves.
So, the long and short of it: the first week is a write-off. The 26th of August morning is the one to circle. That’s your best bet for a proper session. The rest is just waiting and watching.
Rusty.
