The Lowdown
Alright, let me get into the surf outlook for Velzyland (Brazil) over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a bit of a rough patch ahead. The forecast is showing very little to get excited about, with long stretches of poor conditions and weak swell.
The water temperature here is sitting at 72°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
Things start off pretty flat and messy. Wednesday the 19th through to the end of the week are a write-off: tiny waves, cross-shore winds, and lumpy conditions. The swell energy is weak, with combined energy values mostly under 100. You’re looking at 3 ft or less of short-period swell from the east, with moderate breezes ruining any chance of clean surf.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd don’t bring much hope either. Swell bumps up slightly to 3 ft from the south on Saturday, but it’s short period (5 seconds) and the wind is blowing cross-shore, making it choppy. Energy is still low, around 46-63. Sunday morning has a little more period (10 seconds) but only 1 ft, with light winds.
The first real blip of energy shows up on Tuesday the 25th. We’ve got 3 ft swell from the SSE with a period of 13-14 seconds, which is a nice long-period groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 403-451, so there’s some punch behind it. But here’s the catch: winds are light and onshore from the ESE, so it’ll be a bit bumpy, and the surf quality is still rated as poor. It’s a tease, really.
Wednesday the 26th morning might be the closest thing to a surfable window. The swell drops to 2 ft from the south, period 13 seconds, and the wind turns cross-offshore from the north (16 mph). That’ll clean things up a bit. Combined energy is 373, so there’s some juice. But it’s only marginal, and the afternoon turns ugly with stronger cross-onshore winds again.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak surf through the end of August and into early September. By Sunday the 30th, there’s a small bump of 3 ft from the south with light cross-offshore winds, but the period is only 5 seconds, so it’s weak and slow. Energy is 68.
Monday the 31st morning shows a bit more promise: 2 ft from the SSE, period 10 seconds, light cross-offshore winds, and combined energy of 148. Still, it’s only “surfable but very ordinary.”
The rest of the first week of September is more of the same: tiny, weak, and mostly messy. The only other notable moment is Thursday the 3rd afternoon, with 2 ft from the SSE, period 14 seconds, and light cross-offshore winds, giving 166 energy. But it’s still just ordinary.
So, there’s no standout session in this 16-day window. The best bet is probably Wednesday the 26th morning, when the swell is small but has some period and clean wind. Tuesday the 25th has the most energy, but the onshore wind spoils it. If you’re desperate, you might get a few fun ones on the 31st morning or 3rd afternoon, but keep expectations low.
Rusty.
