The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up for Manguinhos.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of mostly poor surf conditions with onshore or cross-off winds messing up what little swell is around. There’s a real dry spell from Sunday the 2nd all the way through to Tuesday the 11th. A few mornings might have a marginal 3ft to 4ft easterly swell, but the wind is never clean enough to make it worth paddling out. The combined energy is weak to moderate, and the period is short, around 7-8 seconds, so it’s just not doing anything special.

Now, hold on to your board, because things finally turn around on Wednesday the 12th. That morning is the standout of the whole outlook. We get a glassy, clean start with a light SSW breeze, and a solid 5ft swell from the SSE pushing in with a long period of 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 1131, which is strong. This is a reef break, so that long-period energy will wrap in nicely, offering some real shape. The water’s sitting at about 73°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. Just keep in mind, the swell is 5ft, so it’s a bit much for beginners, but a solid day for intermediates and above. The afternoon gets a bit choppy as the wind swings, so make the most of that morning glass.

After that, the surf drops off again. Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th are back to poor conditions with smaller, weaker swell. There’s a glimmer on Saturday the 15th morning with a clean 6ft SSE swell (8-second period, moderate energy), but it’s marginal. The real second chance comes on Sunday the 16th morning. The wind is glassy, and we’ve got a 5ft, 10-second SSE swell with strong energy. That’s another very good session, especially for the reef. The afternoon gets messy with onshore wind and a bigger 7ft SE swell that’s only for experts.

The last day, Monday the 17th, is back to poor onshore conditions.

So, to sum it up: the only two windows you really want to target are the morning of Wednesday the 12th and the morning of Sunday the 16th. That first one on the 12th is the best of the bunch – clean, strong, long-period groundswell. Sunday the 16th is also a beauty, but a little less certain. The rest of the time, you’re better off fixing your dings or taking a nap.

Rusty.
