The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The forecast for the next stretch is a bit of a slow burn, with a few bright spots if you’re patient. For the first few days, we’re looking at small, weak surf. The energy is low, and the wind isn’t doing us any favors. Wednesday and Thursday mornings will have some rideable waves, but they’ll be unremarkable. The water temp is running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 68°, so not a shock to the system, but it’s noticeable.
The first real window of opportunity opens up on Saturday, August 8th. We’ve got a new south swell filling in, bringing chest-high waves with a solid 12-second period. The wind is cross-offshore, which will keep the face clean, but it’s a bit fresh. The energy jumps up to a strong level. This looks like the first real chance to get a decent wave, but the conditions are still a little tricky. The swell direction is from the SSE, which is good for the point. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve seen so far.
Sunday the 9th is a step back, with the wind getting messy and the swell dropping. But then Monday the 10th and Tuesday the 11th are where things start to get good. The wind goes light and cross-offshore, the swell stays consistent in the chest-high range, and the energy is moderate to strong. The waves will be clean and lined up. This is a solid stretch for getting your fix.
Then we get to the real standout. Thursday, August 13th, is the one to circle. The afternoon is looking glassy with a building SSE groundswell pushing waves in the head-high range, with a period of 15 seconds. The energy is very strong. This is a long-period swell, which this point break will handle beautifully. It’s going to be powerful and well-shaped. This is the pick of the forecast for sure.
The weekend after that, the 15th and 16th, gets messy again with strong winds and a drop in quality. The swell sticks around, but the wind is going to chop it up. Monday the 17th sees a big pulse of ENE swell, but it’s coming with onshore winds and the size is pushing 10 feet. That’s a lot of water, and it’s going to be a mess. That’s more of a kite-surfing day unless you’re a serious charger and can find a sheltered spot.
The final standout is Tuesday, August 18th. The morning is glassy with a solid 7-foot E swell and a 10-second period. The energy is strong. This is a powerful, clean day, but with that size, it’s for experienced surfers only. It will be a proper session.
The last couple of days in the window fade out in size and quality. The surf drops back down, and the winds get a bit messy again. All in all, the best bets are the 13th and the 18th. The 13th is the standout for the quality of the conditions and the swell. The 18th is for the bigger, more powerful day. Get out there when you can.
