The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks at Sao Lourenco in feet and miles per hour.

This river mouth spot is fairly consistent and open to the south. It loves a southeast swell, so when the wind plays nice, it can really pump. The water is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, coming in at 70°.

First chance to get wet is Tuesday morning, 4th August. It’s tiny – just 1.0ft of south swell – but the wind is light and cross-off, so it’s clean. That afternoon the wind goes glassy, and the swell nudges up to 2ft with a 12-second period, but the energy is weak.

Wednesday the 5th is the first real standout. The morning is clean with offshore wind, 3ft of south swell at 11 seconds, and moderate energy. Not huge, but the conditions are spot on.

We lose a bit of quality Thursday and Friday, with small, weak swells and some cross-off or glassy windows. Saturday morning the 8th is glassy calm with a 2ft, 15-second south swell – that’s long-period groundswell, and the energy is moderate. For a river mouth, that long period can mean clean lines, but it might also break a little straight.

Sunday the 9th morning is glassy again, with 4ft of south swell at 13 seconds and solid energy. That’s a good session if the tide is right.

Things get messier Monday and Tuesday the 10th and 11th, with swell ranging 4ft to 5ft, but the wind is cross-shore and the periods drop, so it’s less clean. Wednesday the 12th sees 6ft of southerly swell with onshore wind – that’s a no-go for a clean paddle.

Then we get a nice run from Thursday the 13th through the weekend. Thursday morning is glassy with 3ft of south swell – clean and fun. But the real highlight is Friday morning, 14th August. We’ve got glassy conditions, 4ft of south swell with a 14-second period, and solid energy. That’s the best session of the whole forecast – the waves will have shape and power.

Saturday the 15th afternoon is also a standout: 5ft of south swell, cross-off wind, and strong energy. That’s good, clean, and punchy for the more experienced.

The following week drops off. Sunday the 16th still has some glassy 3ft waves, but by Monday the 17th it’s fading. The real action returns on Wednesday the 19th, but that’s 15 days out. We’re looking at 6ft to 7ft of south swell with onshore wind – that’s big, messy, and only for experts. The energy is strong, but the wind is onshore, so it’s a battle.

Overall, the best bet is the morning of Friday the 14th – glassy, 4ft, 14-second south swell, clean and powerful. Saturday the 15th afternoon is also a cracker. For the rest, pick the glassy windows and go small.

Rusty out.
