Table - best surf conditions forecast for Itapuca over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, your local surf reporter. Let’s have a look at the surf ahead for Itapuca.
Alright, straight up, the next 16 days are a bit of a mixed bag with some real windows of opportunity, but also a few days where you’re better off doing something else. The first call is for Friday morning, July 10, with small but clean conditions. The water temp is sitting at 73°, which is about 1° warmer than average for this time of year, so nothing too wild, just a touch on the warm side.
The best surf on offer is going to be around Wednesday, July 15, and into Thursday, July 16. Wednesday morning at Itapuca (a sheltered reef break) is a standout. We’re looking at a clean 6ft SSE swell with a solid 12-second period, offering good shape and energy. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the NNE, making it clean. The combined energy is strong at 1005, so there’s plenty of push. This is the pick of the forecast. Thursday morning also looks good with a 5ft SE swell (12s period) and offshore winds from the NNE, keeping it clean. Crowds here are often, so expect some company.
Before that, Saturday morning, July 11, offers a glassy 4ft SE swell, but it’s very ordinary. The energy is moderate (459). Sunday morning, July 12, is similar with a 3ft swell and glassy conditions, but again, nothing special.
Then we hit a rough patch. Monday, July 13, brings an 8ft SSW swell, but it’s onshore and messy with light rain. That’s too big for beginners and only for experts if you’re keen, but the wind is onshore, so quality is poor. Tuesday, July 14, is still big (7ft SSE) but with cross-onshore winds, making it a write-off for paddle surfing. The energy is very strong (1164), but the wind ruins it.
Wednesday, July 15 and Thursday, July 16 are the sweet spot as mentioned. After that, the swell drops right off. Friday, July 17 through to Wednesday, July 22, the surf is small, mostly under 3ft, with weak energy (often under 200). Conditions are clean but tiny. There’s a gap of several days here with no real recommendations.
Then Thursday morning, July 23, shows a small 4ft SSW swell with glassy conditions, but it’s a short 8-second period, so weak and junky. The energy is only 288.
The last real highlight is Friday morning, July 24. A 4ft S swell with a very long 13-second period and glassy winds. The energy is strong at 825. This is a promising long-range call, but it’s a week and a half away, so less certain. The long period will make it better at the reef (Itapuca) than a beach break, offering good shaped waves.
So, the standout is Wednesday, July 15 and Thursday, July 16 for the best combination of size, clean conditions, and solid energy. Get in the water then.
Rusty.
