The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Itapuca is the only break in the forecast, and it’s a sheltered reef that’s consistent, with the best swell from the south-east. There’s a decent pulse of south swell early this week, but then it fades fast. Water temp is about normal for the season.

Tuesday morning, August 25th, hits with an 8 ft south swell at a long 14-second period, giving a combined energy of 2475 – that’s very strong. It’s over 8 ft, so experts only. A light east-northeast breeze keeps it cross-off and clean. Tuesday afternoon drops to 7 ft with similar period, still good.

Wednesday morning, August 26th, is the standout. Glassy, no wind, and a 6 ft south swell with a 12-second period and strong energy at 1740. Perfect reef conditions – clean groundswell. Wednesday afternoon gets a cross-shore wind and an 8 ft swell (15 seconds, 2697 energy), but the wind messes it up.

Thursday, August 27th, holds 7 ft of south swell (14 seconds, 2085 energy) in the morning, but with moderate rain and light cross-shore wind. The afternoon gets rain showers and stronger east wind.

Friday, August 28th, drops to 4 ft in the morning (south, 12 seconds, 573 energy) with a clean offshore north-easterly – small but rideable. Afternoon is smaller at 3 ft.

From Saturday, August 29th, to Tuesday, September 1st, it’s tiny and poor. Swell below 3 ft with short period (8-9 seconds) and weak energy (under 300). Not worth it.

Wednesday, September 2nd, offers a 5 ft south swell (9 seconds, 450 energy) in the afternoon with a clean cross-off breeze – surfable but ordinary. Thursday, September 3rd, is a bit better with 4 ft of south swell (10-11 seconds) and glassy mornings. Energy is moderate (395-509).

Friday, September 4th, has onshore wind and poor conditions. Saturday, September 5th, brings a 7 ft south swell (11 seconds, 1078 energy) but it’s blown out by a strong 15 mph south-westerly onshore wind. With that wind and a sheltered reef, it might be a kite-surfing day.

After that, the surf stays small and weak from Sunday, September 6th, through Wednesday, September 9th. A 5 ft east swell on Monday, September 7th, at 8 seconds (659 energy) is nothing special. By the 9th, it’s down to 2 ft.

Best call: Wednesday morning, August 26th, for that glassy, chest-to-head-high groundswell. The rest is average to poor, with a long flat spell in the second week.

Stay salty,
Rusty
