The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let’s look at what’s coming up for the Ubatuba area.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first few days are pretty ordinary, with small waves and average conditions. The swell is weak and the energy is low, so don’t expect much. Monday the 31st of August offers some tiny 2ft to 2.5ft glassy waves from the ESE, but it’s nothing to get excited about. The water is sitting at 73°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need the thickest wetsuit.

Tuesday afternoon the 1st of September sees a bit of a pick-up. The swell comes from the S at 3.5ft with glassy conditions and the energy jumps up to 269 (moderate). It’s a much better window, and the surf should be good. This is one of the better calls in the early part of the run.

The real standout, though, is Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning session is looking prime. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the SSE, and the period stretches out to 11 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. The energy is strong at 411 (moderate to strong), and with glassy conditions, it’s going to be clean and lined up. This is the best on offer for the first week—don’t miss it.

Friday the 4th of September also looks good. The swell drops a little to 2.5ft, but it’s still from the SSE with that nice 11-second period, and the wind is dead calm or glassy. The energy is 290 (moderate), and it’ll be a fun, clean day for the log or a mid-length.

Now, we hit a bit of a lull through the 5th and 6th of September. The swell drops right off to 1.5ft to 2ft, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore, so it’s messy and weak. Not worth paddling out for.

Monday the 7th of September is when things get interesting again. The afternoon session brings a solid 6.5ft swell from the SSE, with a short period of 8 seconds, but the energy is massive at 853 (strong). It’s glassy, so it’ll be clean, but heads up—that’s getting into the expert zone. Beginners will want to sit this one out.

The 8th of September is a write-off. The wind is onshore and choppy, even though the swell is still hanging around with a long 12-second period. The energy is high, but the wind kills it.

The second week has some bigger, more powerful swell, but it’s mostly cross-on or onshore. The 9th and 10th of September see waves from 6ft to 8ft, with energy climbing into the four-digit range (strong to very strong). The wind is cross-onshore, so it’s not clean, but if you’re an experienced surfer and don’t mind a bit of chop, there’s plenty of power out there.

The 11th of September brightens up. Friday morning brings a 5ft swell from the ESE, with glassy conditions and moderate energy (376). This is a solid, clean session, and it’s a nice recovery from the messy middle of the week.

The 13th of September also looks promising. Sunday morning offers a 6ft swell from the SE, with calm, glassy conditions and energy at 499 (strong). That’s a good-looking morning for a proper session.

The 15th of September closes the run on a positive note. Tuesday afternoon is glassy calm, with a 3.5ft swell from the ESE and energy at 277 (moderate). It’s clean and fun, a nice way to wind down the forecast.

Overall, the best windows are Thursday the 3rd of September morning, Friday the 4th, and the 7th of September afternoon for the bigger stuff (if you’re up for it). The 11th and 13th mornings are also solid. There are gaps, like the 5th and 6th, and the 8th, but the run has enough good moments to keep you busy.

Stay stoked, and keep your eyes on the horizon.
