The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get stuck into it. The long-range juice is on the way, but yer patience is gonna be tested before we get there. The first few days are pretty lackluster, with only tiny, weak leftovers. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf coming up, so don't be in a rush.

The first real sign of life shows up on Sunday the 9th. It’s a bit of a tease, with chest to head high swell showing 6ft from the south, but the winds are all over the place. The morning has a bit of hope with a cross-offshore breeze, but it goes onshore and choppy in the afternoon. It’s not a total loss, but it's a short window.

The next few days are a write-off, with persistent onshore winds and plenty of rain. Not worth paddling out for. You’re looking at a proper stretch of bad conditions that will have you checking the kites instead of your shortboard.

Things finally start to turn around on the morning of Wednesday the 12th. That south swell is still hanging in there at 5ft, but what makes it worthwhile is the glassy, clean conditions with a cross-offshore breeze. This is the first proper look at Lage (Lage) all period, and it should be peeling nicely down the reef. The water is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so you can get away with a thinner suit.

Then, Thursday the 13th morning is another standout. The swell nudges up slightly to 6ft from the south, but it's those clean, offshore conditions that have me frothing. Light offshore winds and good energy make this the pick of the forecast. This is a proper groundswell with a 13-second period, which will have some juice behind it as it wraps into the reef.

The rest of that week is a mixed bag. Friday morning the 14th still has some clean 4-5ft waves, but the swell is on the way down. The weekend turns messy again, with a new pulse of swell, but it's a junky, onshore mess. That bigger swell predicted for Saturday afternoon the 15th at 8ft gets ruined by cross-onshore winds. Too big and blown out. Sunday the 16th is a step back.

Now, for the second week, we’re looking further out. The models are hinting at something more promising, but treat it with caution. Monday the 17th shows a return to form with solid 6-7ft easterly swell and clean conditions. This could be a great day, but it’s a long way out, so don’t book the day off work just yet. The energy is strong, and if those winds hold, Lage could be big and clean. After that, the surf drops off real quick into tiny, weak waves for the final few days.

So, if you’re picking your moments, Sunday the 9th is a warm-up, but the real gems are the mornings of the 12th, 13th, and potentially the 17th. The 13th looks like the pick of the bunch – solid swell, light offshores, and a long-period pulse. Keep an eye on the 17th too, as that could be the biggest, cleanest swell of the period, but it’s too far out to be certain.

Rusty.
