The Lowdown

Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

We’re starting off with a bit of a flat spell, so don’t be in a rush. The first session worth paddling out for is a bit of a tease, but there’s some real promise later on.

The water’s currently sitting at 66°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so nothing to worry about there.

The first real chance to get wet looks like Monday morning, September 7th. It’s not going to be a classic, with waves around 6 ft from the S, but the period is a solid 10 seconds, so there’s a bit of shape to it. The wind is a light cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but it’s surfable. The combined energy is moderate (935). The wind is light, so it’s not a total write-off, but it’s a marginal one.

Tuesday morning, September 8th, is a better shout. The swell drops to 3 ft from the SSE, but we get a clean, cross-offshore wind from the NNW. It’s small, but it’ll be clean and fun on a longboard. The energy is moderate (312).

Then we have a bit of a lull until the standouts. Monday, September 14th, is the week to circle. The morning kicks off with a solid 5 ft from the SE, with a long 12-second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW. The energy is strong (760). The afternoon holds up too, with 6 ft from the SE, 11-second period, and clean light offshore wind. The energy is still strong (726). This is a point break, so that long-period groundswell will wrap in nicely. Expect clean lines and proper waves. This is the best on offer.

Tuesday, September 15th, gets a bit messy. The morning has 5 ft from the SE, but it’s a cross-shore wind, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. The afternoon gets bigger at 7 ft from the SSE, but it’s a strong cross-onshore wind, making it choppy and poor. The energy in the afternoon is very strong (1288), but the wind ruins it.

The forecast for the second week is more uncertain, but there’s a flicker of hope. Thursday, September 17th, has a morning of 7 ft from the S, with a moderate cross-shore wind and very strong energy (1056), but it’s again marginal due to the wind.

Saturday, September 19th, has a tiny 3 ft from the SSE, but it’s glassy in the morning. It’s a long shot, but a glassy morning is always worth a look.

So, overall, the standout is definitely Monday, September 14th. Get that date in your calendar. The rest of the window is a mixed bag of small clean days and blown-out bigger days. The gap between the first worthwhile surf and the absolute best is about a week, so be patient.

Rusty.
