The Lowdown

G'day, I'm Rusty. Let me be straight with you: the next couple of weeks around Seper are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We've got a long stretch of poor surf conditions, so don't rush to wax up just yet.

The pattern is mostly small, weak swell with onshore or cross-shore winds ruining whatever waves show up. The combined swell energy is moderate at best, topping out around 505 on September 19th, but even then the wind is a problem. For the first week, from Monday the 14th right through to the weekend of the 20th, it's all cross-on or onshore wind, making for choppy, lumpy, or just plain messy surf. There's a brief moment on Tuesday morning the 15th where the wind goes cross-off and it cleans up, but the swell is only 3ft from the ESE with a short period of 8 seconds – not much power behind it, and combined energy of 153 is weak to moderate.

The water temperature is sitting at 80°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – the anomaly is 2°F, so it's a bit of a nice surprise if you get in, but the surf itself is the letdown.

Now, a few days in the second week might get your hopes up but don't get too excited. On September 23rd, Wednesday afternoon, we see a jump in period to 12 seconds from the ESE with a combined energy of 532, but it's still cross-on and the swell height is only 5ft. That's a long period groundswell, so it'll have more energy but also longer gaps between sets. It's a reef break, so that long period might actually wrap in okay, but the onshore wind will chop it up. September 24th, Thursday morning, also has some potential with 4ft from the ESE and an 11-second period, combined energy of 417, and the wind is cross-shore – still not perfect, but a little better. Honestly, nothing here is a standout.

Forget about any real quality sessions. The best you could do is Tuesday morning the 15th for a quick, clean, but small wave, or maybe Thursday morning the 24th for a slightly punchier but still messy option. There's nothing over 5ft until September 18th when it hits 6ft, but that's with a 6-second period and onshore rain – terrible combo. After September 27th, the swell drops right off to nothing.

This is a long dry spell, nearly the whole 16 days. If you're keen, wait for a cleaner window, but honestly, the forecast can change. For now, it's a quiet period at Seper.

Rusty.
