The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Farol da Barra over the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s a pretty quiet start. The first few days are a write-off with poor conditions and messy, onshore winds. We’re looking at a gap of about a week with no real surf recommendation. The first sign of life shows up on the morning of Friday the 21st of August, with the wind going glassy. That’s a major positive. The swell is small, around 3 ft from the ESE, but the period is short at 8 seconds, so the energy is pretty weak (131). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Saturday the 22nd of August morning is another small window: clean conditions with a light offshore wind, swell dropping to 3 ft from the ESE, period 7 seconds, and energy fading to 95. Still, better than the chop.
The real standout – and I mean the one to circle – is the morning of Thursday the 27th of August. There’s a long-period groundswell rolling in from the SSE at 18 seconds, with a combined energy of 402 (moderate). The wave height is only 2 ft, but that period is long, so the waves will have shape and push. The wind is a gentle cross-offshore from the ENE, making it clean. This is a point break, so it’ll handle that long period well. Expect proper lines. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, no anomaly to speak of.
Friday the 28th of August morning is a repeat of that clean, cross-off setup with a 3 ft SSE swell at 15 seconds and energy at 340. Another good option, but not quite as clean as Thursday. After that, the conditions get gnarly again with onshore winds and chop through the rest of the month. For beginners, the swell stays under 5 ft throughout, so it’s never too big for them, but the short period stuff on the windy days will be messy.
A final note: for the morning of Friday the 4th of September, there’s a promising window with a clean cross-off wind and a 5 ft ESE swell, period 8 seconds, energy 271. That’s a solid prospect, but it’s a long way off, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, the best bet is the morning of Thursday the 27th of August. Set your alarm.
