The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking at Farol da Barra.
Alright, it’s gonna be a bit of a wait for the good stuff. The first week is pretty much a write-off, unfortunately. The whole period from Monday 17th of August right through to the end of the following week is mostly a battle with messy, cross-onshore winds. The swell is there, but it’s just not happening. The wave energy is moderate, with values between 300 and 900 (combined energy), but it’s all just lumpy and poor. The water temperature is sitting at 79°F, which is about average for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing while you're shaking your head.
The real standout is a narrow window on Friday the 21st of August. The morning session is the absolute pick. The wind swings to a light NE at 3 mph and turns glassy, the swell is 4 ft from the ESE at 8 seconds, and the energy has dropped to 200 (combined energy). The conditions are described as "expect good surf conditions," and that’s the cleanest we’ll see it. This point break is a bit inconsistent, but when it gets that glassy and clean, it’s worth the paddle. After that, it’s back to the choppy stuff.
There are a few other windows where it gets rideable, but not great. The morning of Saturday 22nd of August has a clean 3 ft ESE swell with a gentle offshore wind from the N, but it’s small and just ordinary. The following Monday 24th of August morning is glassy again, but the swell is tiny at 3 ft, with energy down to 66 (weak). Same story for the 31st of August morning with a clean 4 ft wave and an offshore wind, but it’s not a standout.
The real second chance comes right at the tail end of the forecast. Tuesday 1st of September morning looks promising. The wind is light offshore from the N at 6 mph, the swell is 5 ft from the E at 8 seconds, and the energy is moderate at 384 (combined energy). It’s described as "expect good surf conditions," so that’s your best bet if you can wait it out. This is a long-range call, so keep an eye on it, but it’s the one that has the most potential.
So, to sum it up: Friday morning 21st August is the best for a clean, glassy session, and if you’re looking further ahead, Tuesday 1st September morning is your next best shot. The rest is a lot of waiting for the wind to play nice.
Rusty.
