The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Farol da Barra.
Honestly, I’m a bit gutted because the next couple of weeks are looking pretty ordinary. There’s no real standout, and the first good surfable window doesn’t show up until Wednesday morning, the 22nd of July. Before that, we’ve got a run of poor surf conditions with strong winds and lumpy, choppy water. The first few days are just a write-off – Friday the 17th through to Tuesday the 21st are all cross-on or cross winds, with swell around 7ft to 7ft but completely ruined by a fresh breeze. The combined energy is moderate but messy (between 316 and 981). The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Alright, now for the one bright spot – Wednesday morning, the 22nd of July. We’ve got a clean 5ft swell from the ESE, with a light cross-off wind and a glassy look. The combined energy is moderate (306). The period is short at 8 seconds, so it’s a bit of a windswell, but the clean conditions will make it workable for a point break like Farol da Barra. The best swell direction is SSE, and this is coming from ESE, so it’s not perfect, but with the offshore setup, it’ll be the best bet. Keep in mind this break is inconsistent and can be a bit of a wait, but when it’s clean like this, it’s worth sitting out there.
Thursday morning, the 23rd of July, is also looking clean with a 4ft ESE swell, light cross-off wind, and a slight air. Combined energy is moderate (216). Again, it’s not a big groundswell, but the clean conditions will make it surfable for intermediates.
After that, Friday morning the 24th of July – the wind goes glassy, WNW, with a small 4ft ESE swell. The combined energy is low (180). It’s surfable but very ordinary. The swell is too small to get excited about.
The rest of the run from the 25th of July onwards is tiny – 1.0ft to 3ft – and mostly cross-on or cross winds. The combined energy drops to weak (63 to 144). There’s a little spike on the 1st of August with a 2ft SSE swell and a long 16-second period, but the wind is cross and the combined energy is only moderate (244). With such a long period on a beach break, it’ll be too straight and mostly closeouts. Not worth paddling out for.
So, Wednesday morning the 22nd of July is the pick of the period. It’s not going to be pumping, but if you’ve got a log or a mid-length and you want a clean, cruisy session, that’s your window. Keep an eye on the wind, because the afternoon chopping up is a letdown.
Rusty.
