Right, listen up. Rusty here. Let’s be straight—this is a pretty ordinary looking stretch for Barra Vento. We’ve got a run of days with a bit of size in the water, but the wind and conditions are just making a mess of it. The real story here is a waiting game until the back half of the second week, when a cleaner, longer-period south-southeast groundswell shows up.
We start off on Thursday the 2nd of July with a 5 ft swell from the East-Southeast, but a solid 12 mph SSE cross-on breeze is tearing it up. It’s choppy and messy, with moderate wave energy (459). That’s a no-go. Friday the 3rd hangs around 6 ft to 6 ft, still East-Southeast, but the wind is cross-shore and strong at 16 mph, creating a cross-chop. The energy builds a bit (615 on Friday afternoon), but it’s not clean. Saturday the 4th drops to 4 ft to 5 ft, with a lighter cross-onshore, but it’s still poor. It’s a rough few days.
There’s a real gap in quality here. We get a small taste of something better on Wednesday the 8th of July. The swell drops to just 2 ft, but it switches to a longer-period (12 sec) groundswell from the South-Southeast. The morning brings a light offshore breeze from the North, making it clean, and the energy is a weak 125. It’s surfable, but tiny. The real standout window opens Thursday the 9th of July. Same South-Southeast groundswell, now 3 ft, with a period of 12 seconds and a light offshore wind. The water is 80°, about average for this time of year. The combined energy is 314, so you’re getting some punch. This is the best morning on offer—clean, straight lines. The afternoon gets ruined by a cross-shore, so get in early. Friday the 10th is a step back.
The second week is a tale of two halves. Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of July are messy with cross-onshores. But then, Monday the 13th of July morning is another little highlight. The swell is small, 3 ft, but that South-Southeast groundswell has a 12-second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the Northwest. It’s clean, it’s glassy, and the energy is still moderate at 201. After that, it fades into tiny, onshore slop for the rest of the week.
Look, for the first week, the Thursday 9th morning is your best bet for anything resembling a decent surf. It’s a groundswell, which at a spot like this can offer better shape, but keep in mind those longer-period swells can break a bit straight on a beach. Later, Monday the 13th morning offers another clean window, but it’s small. If you’re a beginner, the 5 ft to 6 ft days earlier in the week are too big and messy. Anything over 5 ft with that wind is a battle. For the experts, there’s nothing over 8 ft, so no heavy days. Honestly, given the persistent cross-onshore wind and the beach setup, a few of those afternoons look more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle session. This area can get a blank run like this; it’s not unusual.
