The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you: the next couple of weeks at Barra Vento are a real mixed bag, and for a lot of it, you’re better off staying home and waxing your board. The water temp is sitting around 79°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The pattern is messy. For the first week and a bit, we’ve got a consistent push of swell, but the wind is just horrible. Cross-onshore winds are the name of the game, which is going to chop everything up real bad.
Tuesday the 14th is a write-off. You’ve got tiny 2 ft waves coming from the southeast with a so-so 10-second period, but a moderate breeze from the south and some light rain just makes it a no-go. The combined energy is weak at just 73.
Then from Wednesday the 15th through to the end of that week, the swell picks up big time, but the wind stays nasty. Wednesday morning sees 8 ft of windswell from the SSE, but it’s getting hammered by a strong 28 mph cross-onshore, making it a total mess. The energy is moderate at 756. That trend continues, with fresh to strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy, choppy conditions all the way through to Sunday the 21st.
Now, there is a real standout, but it’s a tease. Monday the 20th morning is your best bet. You’ll get clean 6 ft waves from the ESE with a short 8-second period, but the key is a light offshore wind from the NNW at just 3 mph. That’s going to make conditions glassy and clean. The combined energy is moderate at 449. This is the best on offer in the whole period. But get it while you can, because by the afternoon the wind swings back onshore and spoils it.
After that, the week of the 22nd sees the swell drop back into the 3 ft to 4 ft range. Wednesday the 22nd morning is another one to keep an eye on, with 4 ft waves from the ESE and a totally glassy morning (0 mph wind from the ENE). That’s clean, surfable, but the energy is only 228, so it’s not punchy. The swell period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s more of a mushy, beach-break style wave.
For the second week, the outlook is slim. There are a few moments of clean-ish conditions, like the 25th and 26th mornings, but the swell drops off to 3 ft or so with low energy (169 and 142). Honestly, it’s looking like a pretty drawn-out lull.
There just isn’t much to get excited about. This is one of those stretches where you just have to wait for the right morning and have your phone ready for a last-minute call. The Monday the 20th morning is the clear standout. Don't sleep on it.
