The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s look at what’s on offer.
Alright, so we’ve got a bit of a slow start at Barra Vento. The first few days are pretty grim, with a lot of cross-onshore chop and poor conditions. The water temp is sitting around 79°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Thursday morning, the 21st of August. We get a clean morning with light northerly offshore wind, and surfable waves around 3 ft from the ESE, but the period is only 8 seconds, so it’s a bit short-period. The combined energy is moderate at 131. It’s okay for a beginner, but nothing to get too excited about.
Saturday morning, the 22nd, is similar – clean, offshore wind, small 3 ft waves. But again, the period is short, and the energy is low at 78. More of a longboard or learner session.
Now, the standout window. Wednesday morning, the 26th of August, is where it gets interesting. We’ve got glassy conditions, zero wind, and a small 2 ft wave from the SSE, but here’s the kicker – that swell has a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s groundswell energy, and it shows in the combined energy of 203 (moderate). For a break like this, that long period means the waves will be clean, well-shaped, and have proper push, even if the height is small. This is the best on offer in the first week, and it’s a proper session for a keen surfer who knows how to read a long-period groundswell.
Then there’s a gap. The next real highlight doesn’t come until Monday morning, the 31st of August. Another glassy morning, with NNE wind at 3 mph, and we get 5 ft waves from the ESE. The period is 8 seconds, so shorter, but the energy is strong at 266. This is a solid, clean wave for intermediates and up. That’s the second best window.
Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, also looks good. Clean, offshore NNW wind, 4 ft from the ESE, period 8 seconds, and moderate energy at 222. It’s a good follow-up session.
The final standout is Friday morning, the 4th of September. Glassy conditions again, with a light NW wind, 4 ft from the ESE, period 9 seconds, and a high combined energy of 412 – that’s strong wave energy. This one’s a bit further out, so less certain, but it’s got the potential to be the best of the whole run if it holds.
Overall, don’t bother paddling out until the 21st. The 26th morning is the real gem, and then the 31st morning and 1st September morning are solid. The 4th September is a long-range promise. The rest of the time, it’s choppy, cross-onshore, and not worth your time. If you’re a beginner, those clean mornings with small waves are your best bet. For everyone else, aim for that 26th.
Rusty.
