Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for us at Barra Vento.
The next two weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. We’re starting with some decent size, but the wind is going to be our biggest enemy for the first few days. The water temperature is sitting at 80°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Friday July 3rd kicks things off, but don’t get too excited just yet. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the ESE, with a moderate cross-onshore chopping it up. The combined energy is moderate (552), but the conditions are messy. This is one to watch from the beach.
Saturday July 4th sees the swell dropping to 5ft, and while the morning has a light onshore breeze at 6 mph, the afternoon wind picks up. It’s a marginal call at best, so probably not worth paddling out.
Sunday July 5th is where we finally get a sniff. The morning session is the standout early option. Swell has eased to 4ft from the ESE, period is a short 8 seconds, but the wind is a light cross-offshore breeze. That’s going to clean things up nicely. The combined energy is still moderate (265). For a beginner spot like this, that’s a fun, easy paddle and some clean little rollers to learn on. Keep an eye on the morning session before the wind swings onshore in the afternoon.
The rest of that first week – Monday through Wednesday – is pretty quiet. Swell drops below 3ft, the energy levels dip into the low triple digits, and while we get some offshore winds on Wednesday morning and Thursday morning, the swell is just too weak to get excited about. The Wednesday morning session has a tiny 2ft from the SSE with a long 12-second period, and clean offshore wind, but at that size, it’s barely a ripple (energy 180).
Now, here’s the real gem of the forecast, and it’s a long way out, so keep your fingers crossed. Thursday July 9th morning is looking promising. We’ve got a 3ft groundswell from the SSE with a long 12-second period. The wind is a light northerly offshore at just 3 mph, making for clean conditions. The combined energy is moderate (247). That deep water swell arriving on a clean face will give you the best shaped waves of the whole run. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
The following weekend, Saturday July 11th morning, offers some clean conditions again with offshore winds and a nice 3ft from the SE, period stretching to 13 seconds (energy 248). Then Sunday July 12th is a beauty from morning to afternoon. We get a 3ft swell from the SE, a 12-second period, and in the afternoon the wind goes glassy. That afternoon session with the glass-off and moderate energy (303) will be a real treat.
Beyond that, from Monday July 13th onwards, the size drops off again, back into the 2ft to 2ft range. We get some clean mornings with offshore or cross-off breezes on the 14th and 16th, but the wave height is low. The energy stays in the low to mid 100s, so it will be small but possibly rideable for a log or a longboard.
Overall, the standout window is the morning of Thursday July 9th for that long-period groundswell and glassy conditions. Sunday the 12th is also a cracker, especially that afternoon glass-off. Anything else is either too small or too windy to get stoked about.
Rusty.
