The Lowdown
Alright, let’s spell it out plain: the next 16 days at Barra Vento (Barra-Vento) are looking rough. Don’t expect any magic. The water is 26° – pretty average for this time of year, no big deal.
The first thing worth paddling out for isn’t until Monday, July 20th, in the morning. Before that, from Thursday the 16th through Sunday the 19th, it’s all cross-onshore wind and lumpy, choppy crap. Swell heights are running 3ft to 7ft, but the wind is killing it. The wave energy is moderate (519-920) but it’s not working for you.
Monday morning, July 20th, we get a little break. The wind drops to a light breeze from the east at 6 mph, but it’s still cross-shore. The swell is 6ft out of the ESE with an 8-second period, and the energy is moderate (388). It’s only marginal – questionable tide conditions – so not a standout, but it’s the best we’ve had.
The real window is Wednesday morning, July 22nd. That’s the one. The wind goes dead calm – glassy – and the swell is 4ft from the ESE with an 8-second period. The energy is moderate (265). It’s clean, no wind chop, and the conditions are “good.” That’s your best bet, but it’s only a morning window before the wind shifts.
Thursday morning, July 23rd, is also worth a look. Light offshore wind from the NNW at 6 mph, 4ft ESE swell, 8-second period, and clean. Energy is moderate (216). Same deal – morning only, then it’s gone.
After that, it’s back to cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions through the end of the month. The swell drops to under 3ft by the 25th, and the energy gets weak (as low as 92). There’s a bump in the long period swell on July 27th (13-14 seconds, energy 316-348), but the wind is cross-onshore and lumpy, so it’s not going to be any good.
The standout is Wednesday morning, July 22nd. That’s your best shot. Go get it.
