The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get straight into it. The next couple of weeks here are a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. We’ve got a patch of proper onshores and lumpy conditions to start, and it’s not until Friday morning that things clean up enough to really get the heart beating. Even then, we’re not talking about a classic, but there are a couple of windows where you could get a few fun ones if you’re keen.
The first real chance we get is Friday morning, the 21st of August at Barra Vento. The wind swings light and offshore from the northeast, which is a massive plus. It’ll be clean, with clean lines. The swell is small, around 4ft from the ESE with a period of 8 seconds. It’s not going to blow you away, but it’ll be surfable and you won’t be battling the chop. The combined energy is moderate at 396. Water temp is 79° with the anomaly just under a degree, so pretty much normal for this time of year.
There’s a bit of a lull after that. The weekend and the early part of next week are poor, with more onshore wind and tiny swell. The energy drops right off, with values down in the 80s and 100s, so it’s flat and messy. We’re looking at a gap of a few days with nothing really worth paddling out for.
The next little highlight is Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. There’s a light cross-offshore wind from the northwest, which will keep things clean, and the swell is still small, around 3ft from the east with a 7-second period. Energy is moderate at 173. It’s not great, but it’s the best of a pretty ordinary stretch.
And then it just drops away again. The rest of that week is poor, with onshores and cross-shore winds, and the swell gets really small. There’s a long stretch of nothing, from the 24th right through to the 29th, where the wave heights are under 3ft and the energy is weak. The wind is mostly bad for surfing, so it’s a real dry spell.
Now, looking further out, there’s a glimmer of hope for the final day of the month. Sunday morning, the 30th of August is the standout of the whole run, but it’s more than a week away, so treat it as promising rather than a sure thing. The swell kicks up to 6ft from the ENE with a short 7-second period. Energy is moderate, at 427. But the big win is the light offshore wind from the north, which will make it clean. With the size, this one is going to be a bit more pushing, so it’s not for beginners. This is the one to circle on the calendar. The period is short, so it might be a bit crumbly and not have the punch of a longer period swell, but it’s the best combo of size and clean conditions we get.
Beyond that, it drops back off again. The first couple days of September look small and onshore, so that Sunday morning is your one real shot at something decent in this stretch.
