The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into this.

Well, to be honest, looking at the whole 16-day window for Boca da Barra, it’s a tough run. There are no standout days where everything comes together nicely. The surf is on offer, but the conditions are pretty average for the most part. The first real pulse of energy doesn’t show up until around Thursday the 19th, but even then, the wind is a mess.

Right off the bat, Wednesday morning the 16th has a weak 3ft east swell, but the wind is cross-on from the NNE at 6 mph, and the wave comment is “poor surf conditions.” The water temp is 80°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.

Thursday the 17th morning sees a bigger push of energy with a combined swell energy of 547 (moderate to strong), but an onshore ESE breeze at 9 mph keeps things choppy. The swell is 4ft from the ESE with an 11-second period, which is a nice groundswell, but the wind kills it.

The real size comes in on Saturday the 19th with a 8ft SE swell and a 7-second period. That’s a short-period, wind-driven swell, and with 16 mph cross-on winds and rain, it’s messy. That’s expert-only size, but the quality is just not there.

There’s a flicker of hope on Sunday the 22nd morning. The swell drops to 5ft from the ESE with an 8-second period, and the wind is light and onshore from the ENE. The combined energy is 244, still weak-moderate, and we only get a “marginal” score. Not worth getting excited about.

Later in the forecast, around Wednesday the 24th and Thursday the 25th, we see a cleaner east swell developing with longer periods of 11 to 13 seconds. The morning of the 24th has a 5ft east swell (11 sec) and an onshore ENE breeze at 9 mph, but the comment stays “marginal.” The wind is just not cooperating.

The biggest event on the charts is the 1st of October. A big 8ft SSE swell hits with a combined energy of 924 (strong), but it’s paired with a 12 mph cross-on NE wind. That’s big, but it’s going to be a washing machine out there. Only for the experts, and honestly, with that wind, it looks more like a kiteboarding day than a surfing one.

Overall, this stretch is a bit of a write-off for quality surfing. The river mouth at Boca da Barra is consistent, but the wind is almost never right. The best you can hope for is a short window on the 24th or 25th if the light onshore winds clean it up, but it’s a gamble. When it’s this poor for this long, don’t worry too much—it tends not to stay like this forever.

Rusty.
