The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Galheta do Sul.

Right off the bat, the first few days are a write-off. Friday the 7th is a mess – strong cross-shore wind, lumpy, choppy, and the swell is just a weak 3ft with a short period. Not worth paddling out. Saturday the 8th shows a bit more life with a 6ft SSE swell, but the wind is still tricky and the conditions are just marginal. We’ve got a few days of poor to mediocre surf to get through before the real window opens.

The standout window is definitely Tuesday the 11th. We’ve got a solid 5ft to 6ft SSE groundswell rolling in with a nice 12-second period, moderate wave energy (777-914), and the wind goes glassy or light offshore. That’s about as clean as it gets here. The water is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might not even need a thick suit. The morning session will be clean, and the afternoon turns glassy. This is the session to lock in. Crowds are sometimes an issue, but on a Tuesday with that kind of quality, expect a few regulars to be out.

The next big one to keep an eye on is Thursday the 13th afternoon. The swell drops a touch to 5ft, but the period jumps to a very long 16 seconds, creating excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The wave energy is strong (1533), and the wind is clean cross-off. This is a point-break style wave on a reef setup, so that long period will really line up nicely. Not for beginners, but if you can handle it, this is premium.

After that, things get a bit average again through the middle of the month with cross-shore winds and choppy surf. But then, on Wednesday the 19th, we get another spike: a 7ft SSW swell with a short 8-second period, but the wind is light offshore and the conditions are clean. That’s a big one – over 8ft is expert territory, so this 7ft is still a solid challenge for strong intermediates. The wave energy is strong (1141), so expect some push.

The final week sees a taper back to smaller, cleaner waves but nothing that jumps out as a must-surf session. Thursday the 20th morning has a 5ft S swell with clean offshore wind, a decent option if you missed the earlier windows.

Overall, the best bet is Tuesday the 11th for the best all-round conditions, with Thursday the 13th afternoon as the pick for the experienced crew looking for a long-period groundswell. Don’t waste your time on the first few days or the windy, choppy spells in the middle.

Rusty.
