Table - best surf conditions forecast for Pedra Magra over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what Pedra Magra has to offer for the next couple of weeks.
First off, the water's running much colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 59°. You'll want the thickest wettie you own.
Right now, and for a good stretch, it's pretty grim. Sunday the 12th has a bumpy 7ft south swell, but with a short 6-second period and a fresh 21 mph cross-off wind, it’s just a messy, blown-out wash-through. The combined wave energy is only moderate (671), and it’s poor surf. Honestly, not worth the paddle out.
Monday the 13th looks like the first real chance for a wave. The morning is still a bit messy, but Monday afternoon cleans right up. We’ve got a 5ft south swell, 8-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the SSW at 12 mph. Combined energy is moderate (439) and it's a decent little window for the beginner-friendly waves Pedra Magra is known for. It’s a sheltered spot, so it won't be huge, but the offshore wind will glass it up. Expect crowds *sometimes*.
From Tuesday the 14th right through to Friday the 24th of July, it’s a long, bleak run of poor surf conditions. The swell drops off, the winds go onshore or cross-onshore, and it’s just not happening. You're looking at over a week of flat, choppy, or blown-out junk. The energy numbers drop way down into the weak zone (below 100 for a lot of it). A blank run this long is a real possibility for this area.
Now, hold onto your board, because things take a massive turn for the better starting Saturday the 26th of July. This is the standout of the entire period. Saturday morning shows a solid 8ft south swell with a 10-second period and a clean cross-off wind. The combined energy jumps to strong (1330). It's marginal due to tide, but it's a huge step up. Saturday afternoon pumps even harder: a 10ft south swell, 11-second period, with the same clean 12 mph cross-off. Energy is very strong (1833). This is getting serious, and will be pushing the limits for beginners.
But the absolute best is Sunday the 26th of July. This is the one you circle. We’ve got a powerful 12ft south swell with a very long 14-second period, lighting up with a clean offshore wind from the southwest at 12 mph. The combined energy is enormous (4011). This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The long period means those lines will be smooth and powerful; for a sheltered spot like Pedra Magra, this could shape up into some serious, grinding walls. Sunday afternoon is even cleaner: still 12ft, with a 15-second period, and the wind drops to a light 6 mph offshore. The energy goes through the roof (4873). This is the absolute peak of the forecast.
Monday the 27th of July is still massive (12ft, 16-second period) and the energy is off the charts (5686), but the wind swings cross-on and then onshore with rain, so the quality drops. It'll be a big, raw ocean, more for the hardcore chargers.
So, to wrap it up: forget the first week and a half. The real action is on Saturday the 26th, and especially Sunday the 26th of July. That Sunday session at Pedra Magra, with that size, period, and offshore flow, is your gold. Get it while it's good.
Rusty.
