Pedra Magra Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, let’s talk about Pedra Magra in feet and degrees. The start of the outlook is a slow grind, but there’s a couple of proper sessions way out that are worth the wait.

The first few days, starting Tuesday the 28th of July, are tough. The morning has a 5ft swell from the NE, but the period is short at 6 seconds, so the energy is weak (276). The water is 65°, which is normal for this time of year. Light offshore wind keeps it clean, but the waves are too small and weak to get excited. By afternoon, the wind goes onshore, the swell drops to 2ft, and it’s all over. Wednesday through Friday are all poor, with onshore winds and small, weak swell. The whole first week is a bust.

Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd of August are flat. Swell is down to 0.7ft or 1ft. Wind is cross-onshore. Not worth paddling out. Monday the 3rd is glassy but flat, with a 2ft swell at 6 seconds. Another gap.

Then on Tuesday the 4th of August, we get a window. The morning shows a 5ft S swell, 10-second period, with moderate energy (539). The wind is cross-offshore and light. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the first real chance. The swell is big enough to be fun but not overwhelming. The afternoon wind goes onshore, so get in early.

The next few days are ordinary. Not a standout.

But here’s the real one. Monday the 10th of August. The morning is glassy, with a 6ft S swell and a very long period of 14 seconds. The energy is massive at 1235 (strong). The conditions are described as “expect very good surf conditions.” The swell direction matches the optimum for the spot. This is a groundswell with serious power and shape. The glassy wind means the surface will be perfect. The afternoon is also glassy, with energy even higher at 1429. This is the best session of the entire outlook.

Tuesday the 11th of August morning is also glassy, with a 5ft S swell, 13-second period, and energy of 1064. Another very good session, but the afternoon turns onshore. After that, the swell continues but the wind stays onshore, so the magic is gone.

So, to sum it up: the first week and a half are a write-off. The real prize is Monday the 10th and Tuesday the 11th of August, with Monday morning being the absolute standout. Glassy, strong, long-period groundswell, perfect conditions. Pedra Magra is a sheltered beginner break, but with 5-6ft swell, it’s going to be clean and fun for intermediate and above. You might see a few other surfers, but it’s worth it.
