The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s talk Ponta da Tataruga. Honestly, it’s a slow 16 days. Most of it you can sleep through. The only real standout, and the one you want to pencil in, is the afternoon of Monday, August 24th.
We get a little pulse of groundswell that afternoon – about 3ft from the southeast, with a super long 15-second period. The combined energy ticks up to a moderate 262. The wind goes glassy out of the SSW, so it’s going to be clean. That’s the best call of the stretch. That long period means the waves will have some punch, but at a beach/point/pier break like this, it might look a little walled-up and straight at the beach. It’s better suited for a point or reef setup. It’s an intermediate wave, and crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might see a few others out, but nothing crazy.
Everything before that is a slog. From Tuesday the 18th through Sunday the 23rd, you’re looking at waves under 3ft, mostly weak energy (between 37 and 141), with cross or onshore winds messing things up. A couple mornings, like Friday the 21st, have clean offshore wind, but the swell is tiny – only about 2ft with a short period. Not worth the paddle.
After that Monday highlight, it fades fast. Tuesday the 25th has some glassy moments, but the swell drops to 2ft again. From Wednesday the 26th all the way through to Wednesday, September 2nd, it’s mostly tiny, weak, and messy. The water temp is about what you’d expect for the season.
So, keep your powder dry until that Monday the 24th afternoon glass-off. That’s your one real shot.
