The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the local surf for the next couple of weeks. Let’s get into it.
Alright, mate, the next few days are looking pretty average. There’s a bit of small swell on the menu, but the real standout is waiting for us at the very end of the run. The first week is mostly about small, clean waves for the beginner crew, but if you’ve got patience, the last few days of July and first of August are where the magic could happen.
Friday morning (17 July) is actually the best bet right now. We’ve got a clean 4ft of east swell rolling in at 8 seconds at Barra do Sul. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is just a touch cooler than usual for this time of year. The wind is glassy from the WNW, making for some nice, clean conditions. The combined energy is moderate at 298. It’s not big, but it’s surfable and clean for a beginner-friendly wave. The afternoon sees the wind shift onshore, so get it early.
Saturday (18 July) and Sunday (19 July) are similar stories. Mornings will be clean with a light offshore or glassy wind, offering that same 4ft to 4ft east-northeast swell. The energy drops a bit (150-181), but it’s still worth a look for the learner. Afternoons will be messy with a cross-onshore breeze. This pattern of small, clean mornings and choppy afternoons repeats through until Thursday morning (23 July).
The swell drops right off at the end of the week. Saturday morning (25 July) is a funny one – we get a tiny 3ft of south-east swell, but the wind is dead calm and glassy. The energy is moderate (254), but it’s a long period (10 seconds) groundswell, which might make it a bit roly-poly at this beach break. Still, it could be a fun little session on the right board.
Then we hit a real flat spell. From Saturday afternoon (25 July) all the way through to Tuesday morning (28 July), it’s tiny and mostly blown out. The waves drop below 2ft at times, and the wind is just a mess. Not worth paddling out for.
Tuesday morning (28 July) sees a spike in size – 5ft of south-east swell with a 10-second period, giving us strong energy (440). But the wind is a cross-shore, and the comment says it’s marginal. This one’s for the experienced crew only, as it’s getting too big for beginners, and the conditions aren’t great.
The real standout is Wednesday morning (29 July). We’ve got a clean 4ft of east-southeast swell with a 9-second period, light offshore wind, and the whole morning is looking clean. The energy is solid (293), and it’s a good all-rounder size. The afternoon glass off is also a beauty.
But, hold onto your board, because Friday morning (31 July) is the pick of the entire forecast. We’re looking at a 4ft east-southeast swell with a very long 13-second period. The wind is glassy, and the combined energy is a massive 643. This is proper groundswell. Keep in mind, with a period that long, it might break a bit straight at the beach, so look for a bank with some shape. This is a session for the confident surfer. The afternoon is still good, but a light onshore breeze creeps in.
Saturday (1 August) holds the same long-period swell (13 seconds) with energy over 675, but the wind turns cross-shore and picks up through the day, making it choppier. The morning might still offer some clean sets if you’re quick.
Overall, the first week is small and clean for the beginners, but the real gold is on Friday the 31st of July. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. There’s a big gap of flat, poor surf from the 25th to the 28th, so don’t plan a trip around that time.
Stay safe, and I’ll see you in the water.
Rusty.
