The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's coming up at Barra do Sul.
Overall, it's a real mixed bag for the next couple of weeks. We've got a lot of small, ordinary days with tricky winds, but the wait is worth it. There's a proper standout window right at the end of the forecast period that has my attention. It’s a bit of a slow start, so let's get into it.
We kick off on Saturday the 18th with a chest-high, 4ft easterly swell. The morning is clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, so it’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. The combined swell energy is a moderate 204. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is about 1° cooler than normal – nothing wild, just a slight chill in the air.
The next few days are mostly small and ordinary. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th see similar sized waves around 3ft to 4ft, but the wind is variable. The standout window on Monday the 20th is the morning, with perfect glassy conditions and a 4ft easterly swell. That's your best bet for the first week if you just want to get wet. Tuesday the 21st also has a glassy morning with 3ft waves, but it’s a similar story. From Wednesday the 22nd onwards, the wind turns more onshore and the swell drops, making for a poor run of conditions. There's a bit of a gap from Thursday the 23rd through to Saturday the 25th where the surf is just poor. The wind is messy and the waves are small and choppy. Not worth paddling out.
Sunday the 26th of July looks a touch better. The morning offers a 4ft easterly swell with a clean cross-offshore breeze, and the combined energy jumps to 267. It’s a solid improvement, but still not the peak.
Now, hold onto your board. The real standout is Sunday the 2nd of August. That's a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it, but the forecast is promising. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the ESE with a period of 10 seconds, which is a nice long-period groundswell. The combined energy is a whopping 644, which is a serious step up in power. The morning is clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. This is the best on offer by a long shot. The size is getting up there, so it'll be a bit much for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s game on. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a cross-onshore wind, so make the most of the clean morning.
The break at Barra do Sul is fairly consistent, so even though the first week is a bit of a dud, the forecasts can change. Keep your expectations high for that first Sunday in August.
Rusty, signing off.
