The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for Barra do Sul.
Overall, it’s a quiet stretch. A few mornings look okay for a beginner or a longboarder, but nothing big. The afternoons are a total write-off. The best plan is to hit a glassy morning for a gentle session.
The standout is Wednesday morning, July 15th. The water is a touch colder than usual at 63°, but the conditions are perfect. We’ve got a 4 ft swell from the ESE, with a 10-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the W at 3 mph. The combined swell energy is 240 – that’s moderate power, but for this spot, it’s the cleanest window you’ll get. It’s a beginner break, so don’t expect heavy waves, but it’ll be fun and clean.
Saturday morning, July 18th is another one to note. Slightly bigger at 4 ft, still from the E, but with a shorter 8-second period. The wind is glassy again, and the energy is 231. The morning will be clean, but the afternoon gets messy.
After that, mornings from Thursday July 16th through Tuesday July 21st are all surfable but ordinary – waves around 3 ft to 4 ft, glassy mornings, but weak. The energy drops into the 100s.
Late in the window, on Monday July 27th and Tuesday July 28th, the swell gets tiny at 1 ft to 2 ft, but the period jumps to 12-14 seconds – that’s long-period groundswell. The energy is low (83-136), and the waves will be soft and straight. Fine for a glassy paddle, nothing more.
Saturday July 25th sees a bump to 5 ft, but it comes with rain and a cross-shore wind of 9 mph. The conditions are poor, and the swell is short-period and choppy. That’s kite-surfing weather, not for paddlers.
For the rest of the two weeks, the afternoons are all cross-onshore and messy. The mornings are small and ordinary. There’s no big swell. If you’re a beginner, pick a glassy morning – July 15th or 18th are your best bets.
Rusty.
