The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board and let’s take a look at what’s on the menu. This is gonna be a bit of a slow burn, but there’s a moment or two that’ll get the blood pumping.
Right now, the surf is flat and weak. The first real chance of a wave comes Saturday morning, August 22nd, and that’s where we need to focus. We’ve got a nice little pulse of swell arriving from the SSE, pushing 6ft, with a period of 10 seconds and a whopping combined energy of 735. That’s a solid dose of moderate energy for this spot. The wind is glassy, dead calm, so those waves are gonna be clean as a whistle. The water is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need the thickest suit. This is the standout. The swell direction is hitting from the SSE, which is the optimum for Barra do Sul, so it’s lining up beautifully. The crowd situation is “sometimes,” so you might have company, but it’s not a zoo. The break is fairly consistent, so you’ll get plenty of rides. This is a beginner-friendly wave, but with the size at 6ft, it’s getting a bit hefty for total newbies – still manageable for most.
The good news doesn’t last long. By Saturday afternoon, the wind switches onshore from the ESE, and the swell drops to 3ft. The quality turns to poor. The rest of the week is a bit of a mixed bag. Sunday morning, August 23rd, is glassy again with a small 2ft SE groundswell (12-second period), but the energy is weak at 125. It’s surfable, but not exciting. Monday and Tuesday bring some cross-shore wind and only marginal conditions. The waves stay small, around 2ft to 4ft, with a long period of 14 to 16 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell, but at a beach break, it might be a bit too straight and fat. The energy is moderate, reaching 486 on Monday morning, but the wind is just not cooperating.
Then we have a gap. Wednesday the 26th through Friday the 28th of August is mostly a write-off – poor surf, onshore winds, and messy conditions. The swell is small, and the energy is weak to moderate.
We get another chance on Monday, August 31st. The morning looks promising with a 4ft E swell, 9-second period, and a combined energy of 402. The wind is glassy again, so it’ll be clean. It’s a good surf condition, but it’s not the standout of the window. The break is fairly consistent, so you’ll get waves. The crowd is “sometimes” – you might see a few others out.
The second week is a bit of a gamble. The first few days of September are small and weak, with the wind turning onshore again on the 2nd and 3rd, pushing the swell up to 6ft but with terrible conditions – that’s a kite-surfing mess, not a paddle session. A final flicker of hope comes on Friday, September 4th, with a 4ft ENE swell, a short 6-second period, but glassy wind. The energy is moderate at 243. It’s good surf, but that short period means the waves will be a bit crumbly.
Overall, Saturday August 22nd morning is your absolute best bet. Get on it. The rest of the window is a mix of average, marginal, and poor. The long-range stuff on the 31st of August and the 4th of September are worth a look, but don’t get your hopes up too high – the forecasts are less certain that far out.
