The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, lookin' at the ol' forecast for the next couple of weeks. At first glance, it's a bit of a slow start, but there are a few windows worth getting excited about.
We're kicking off with some small, clean surf on Sunday morning, July 19th, at Barra do Sul. It's a beginner-friendly spot, exposed to the east, and we're seeing a 3ft easterly swell rolling in with an 8-second period. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is about average for this time of year – nothing to complain about there. The wind is light and cross-off from the northwest, so it'll be pretty tidy. The combined wave energy is moderate (128), so it's not a powerhouse, but it's surfable.
The real standout for the first week has to be Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd. The wind goes glassy, dropping to nothing from the west-northwest, and the swell bumps up a touch to 4ft from the east-northeast, still with an 8-second period. The wave energy jumps to a solid moderate (316), which is a noticeable spike. This is the best call of the week – clean, punchy little waves with no wind to mess them up. It's a fairly consistent break, so you can expect a few fun ones.
Thursday and Friday have a bit more energy, but the wind is messy. Friday morning, July 24th, shows a 3ft swell from the southeast with a 9-second period and a clean cross-off breeze from the south-southwest. The energy is moderate (202), and it'll be a lot cleaner than the afternoon, so a morning session is your best bet there.
The second week looks pretty quiet overall. We’ve got a long run of small, weak waves from the 26th through to the 1st of August. Most mornings are glassy, but the swell is tiny, barely 2ft to 2ft, and the energy is weak (mostly under 100). There’s a notable pulse on the 28th of July (Tuesday) morning, with a 1ft swell from the southeast but a very long period of 14 seconds. That’s a groundswell, and while it might offer some clean lines at this exposed beach break, the size is just too small to get excited about. After that, there’s a little bump on the 3rd of August (Monday) morning, with a 3ft easterly swell and glassy conditions, wave energy moderate (108), which could be a sneaky good session if you need a fix. But overall, the second week is a waiting game.
Bottom line: Sunday morning the 19th is a nice, gentle start, but the main event is Wednesday afternoon the 22nd. Get on it. After that, it's a waiting game for a few weeks.
