Praia Grande Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here again for the imperial crew.

Right off the bat, the first week is pretty quiet. Praia Grande is a beginner-friendly, exposed beach break that picks up swell mainly from the east. The water’s sitting at 66°F, which is basically what you’d expect for this time of year.

The first few days, from Sunday the 2nd through to Saturday the 8th, the swell is tiny, mostly around 2ft to 3ft, with a short 7-second period, so it’s weak and sloppy (combined energy in the 40s and 50s). There’s nothing to get amped about. The wind gives a few windows of clean conditions – Sunday the 2nd morning is a light offshore breeze that cleans it up, and a couple of glassy mornings on Monday the 3rd and Tuesday the 4th with the NNW breeze dropping off. But with that tiny swell, it’s just small, ordinary waves for a learner to mess around on. Not worth a drive.

Then Saturday the 8th afternoon sees a bump to 4ft from the southeast, combined energy hitting 156 (moderate), but the wind goes cross-onshore and the period is only 6 seconds – choppy and messy.

The real standout starts showing on Tuesday the 11th. Tuesday morning brings in a clean 4ft swell from the southeast with an 11-second period, offshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph, and combined energy at 351. That’s a solid, surfable groundswell with clean conditions. The longer period means longer waits between sets, but the wave shape will be much better. This is the first real highlight. The next day, Wednesday the 12th morning, is even cleaner with a 2ft southeast swell at 13 seconds and glassy wind, but size is back down.

Thursday the 13th morning looks good too – 3ft from the SSE at 12 seconds, offshore breeze, combined energy 277. Again, clean.

The biggest shout of the whole forecast is Saturday the 15th morning. We’re looking at 5ft from the southeast, 10-second period, offshore wind from the west at 6 mph, glassy clean, and the combined energy is 558 (strong). That is the best wave of the run. For a beginner spot, 5ft is getting proper, but for a decent surfer on a beach break, that’s a fun size with clean shape. The direction lines up nicely with the east swell window.

Then Sunday the 16th and Monday the 17th mornings both look decent – 4ft and 4ft from the east, with offshore and glassy winds, giving clean waves, but energy drops back to 234 and 268. Not the big one, but still good.

Best On Offer: Saturday the 15th morning for the biggest, cleanest swell of the period. Honourable mention: Tuesday the 11th morning for the first solid groundswell.
