Table - best surf conditions forecast for Praia Cardoso over the next 16 days.
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming our way for Praia Cardoso.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch ahead. The water is running really cold right now, about 59°, which is a whopping 7° colder than it should be for this time of year. That is seriously unusual and it's going to feel like a shock to the system, so a thick wetsuit is non-negotiable.
The pattern for the next week and a half is mostly flat and messy. We kick off on Friday the 10th with weak, short-period ESE swell around 4 ft and a light cross-onshore breeze. It’s pretty marginal with very weak wave energy (362), not worth paddling out for. This frustrating lull carries right through the weekend and into the early part of the following week. The waves stay small, the wind is mostly junk, and the energy readings are pathetic – dropping all the way down to just 47 by Friday the 17th. It’s a real flat spell, with several days where you'd be better off checking the gear or going for a run.
Now, let’s talk about the one true standout in this whole 16-day window. Mark your calendars for Friday, July 24th, on the morning. This is the closest thing to a proper session we’ve got. The swell jumps up to a solid 6 ft from the south, with a nice long period of 13 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, you can feel the power in that 1124 reading. What makes it even better is the wind: light offshore from the north, keeping those faces clean and lined up. This is the kind of day that’ll have you rethinking the whole week prior. It’s a big swell for beginners though, so this is one for the experienced crew who know how to handle a bit of juice and some set waves.
Leading up to that, we get a glimmer of hope on Tuesday, July 22nd. The morning shows 5 ft of short-period S swell with a light offshore breeze. The energy is moderate (307), and the conditions look clean. It’s not the big highlight, but it’s definitely a surfable window after such a long, poor run.
Before that, on Tuesday, July 15th, the afternoon is actually not too bad. We have 5 ft of SE swell and a cross-offshore wind from the NE, but then the wind is forecast to really crank up to 19 mph in the afternoon, which will make it lumpy. The morning session that same Tuesday looks much better with a light offshore breeze. Keep an eye on that. And on Wednesday, July 16th, the morning shows a smaller 4 ft SE swell with a clean offshore wind, but the energy is low (199), so it’ll be a bit gutless.
After that main event on the 24th, the wind really turns ugly. We get a massive 8 ft south groundswell on Saturday the 25th, but it’s accompanied by a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind. That’s going to be a total washing machine – choppy, lumpy, and blown out. The energy is massive at 1738, but it’s a complete mess for a surfboard. Honestly, that setup looks a lot more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, in short: a long, quiet stretch ahead, but Friday the 24th morning is the day to circle. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or just not worth the effort. Stay patient, stay warm.
Rusty.
