The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Vermelha over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, we're looking at a stretch of pretty ordinary conditions. The water temp is sitting at 67°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The first few days are a write-off. Tuesday the 4th and Wednesday the 5th are offering nothing but poor surf with messy winds. Thursday the 6th through to Saturday morning the 8th are also a bust, with tiny, weak swell and cross-onshore winds. The energy is low, around 54 to 74 (weak energy) for the bulk of it. A real patience-tester.

Things finally start to show a pulse on Sunday afternoon, the 9th. The swell picks up to a solid 7 ft from the south, with a 12-second period. The energy jumps to 1174 (strong wave energy). The wind goes clean and cross-offshore, and the forecast is for "very good surf conditions." That's our first real standout. It's a bit of a chunky size for beginners, but for anyone with some experience, that Sunday arvo session is looking like the pick of the first week.

Monday the 10th keeps the good run going with 6 ft to 6 ft swell from the south, and the wind actually turns offshore on Monday afternoon. Clean, consistent waves with plenty of energy (around 939). Monday is a solid follow-up.

The start of the second week has a couple of nice windows. Wednesday morning the 12th is looking glassy with a 5 ft SSE swell. Energy is still good at 570 (moderate wave energy). Then Friday morning the 14th has a clean 5 ft south swell with a light offshore wind. It's not huge, but it will be clean.

The real showstopper, though, is further out. Tuesday morning the 18th of August is looking like the best day of the whole outlook. The guidance is pointing to a 8 ft SSW swell, with a long 10-second period, and the wind is forecast to be offshore. The combined energy is a massive 1637 (strong wave energy). This is a serious swell for the spot. Now, it's a long-range call, so treat it with a bit of caution, but if it holds, that Tuesday morning will be pumping. At 8 ft, this is expert territory, so leave the foamies at home.

One thing to keep in mind: Vermelha is an inconsistent spot, so when it does fire, you'll want to be on it. It can get crowded here sometimes, so get out early for the best of it.

For the rest of the second week, there's a bit of a mix. Wednesday the 19th sees a massive 10 ft SSW swell (3180 energy - very strong wave energy), but it's coupled with strong onshore winds, making it a messy, blown-out mess. That one’s a kite surfer's dream, not a paddle surfer's.

So, to wrap it up: Sunday the 9th afternoon is your first real window, and the standout is the long-range call for Tuesday the 18th morning. Keep your fingers crossed on that one.

Rusty.
