The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a lean stretch for Ouvidor. There’s a big dry spell kicking things off. The first real glimmer of anything surfable doesn’t pop up until Tuesday morning, August 4th. That’s a solid few days of waiting. For the first week, it’s mostly poor surf with messy cross-shore winds and tiny, weak swell. The combined wave energy is low, barely cracking 100 (26-173) most days, so there’s just no punch.
The standout, and I mean the *only* standout in this whole 16-day window, is looking like it’s a long way off. On Friday morning, August 14th, there’s a pulse of long-period groundswell. Swell direction is out of the SE with a period of 16 seconds, that’s some serious energy. The combined energy hits 1052, which is strong. It’s a clean morning with light offshore winds from the north. The catch is that this is a long-period swell coming from the SE, which can make a beach break like Ouvidor a bit straight and tricky, but the quality of the energy is undeniable. The swell size is forecast at 3 ft, which is a nice, manageable size for everyone. The water temp is about average for this time of year. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have some company.
The week before that, on Monday afternoon, August 10th, the swell gets big – 6 ft from the east with a combined energy of 511. That’s too big for this spot, the notes say as much. It’s really only for the experienced crew, and even then, the wind is cross-shore, so it’s not going to be clean. Might be more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The second week has a brief flirtation with size on the 10th that’s too much, and then a real quality window on the morning of the 14th if you can wait it out and don’t mind a bit of a gamble on the long-period swell.
Rusty.
