The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough start. The forecast kicks off with a bit of a dud, and we’re looking at a long stretch of nothing special. The first real chance to get wet doesn't come until the 22nd of July, and even that's a bit average. The water is sitting at a very unusual 60.8°, which is a massive 5.9° colder than normal for this time of year – you’ll be wanting a good thick wetsuit, no doubt about it.
The first thing worth a mention is Barrinha on the morning of Wednesday the 22nd. We’ll see a pulse of 4.6ft of weak, short-period swell from the south, with a period of only 8 seconds. The energy is moderate, sitting at 246, but honestly, the wave shape is going to be a bit mushy and fat. The good news is it’s glassy – flat calm, no wind – so it’ll be clean. Not a standout, but a window to get a few little ones if you’re desperate.
Thursday the 23rd picks up a little, with the same 4.6ft from the SSE and a slightly better 10-second period. The energy is moderate (430), and the wind is a gentle cross-offshore breeze, which should clean the faces up nicely. It’s still a marginal forecast, but the conditions are improving.
Now, here’s what we’re waiting for. The real action kicks off on Friday the 24th of July. The swell jumps to a solid 6.2ft from the south, with a period of 8 to 9 seconds. The energy is strong (578 and 597), and we’ve got gentle offshore winds from the southwest. That’s the recipe for clean, lined-up waves, and it’s the best option in the whole run. This is your session, no doubt about it. The wave energy is strong, and the offshore wind will make it stand up nicely. It’s going to be a proper day.
The swell drops a touch on the 25th, coming in at 5.9ft with a 11-second period from the south. The energy is very strong at 757, but it’s onshore wind and light rain, so expect a bit of chop. It’s a marginal call.
The 26th sees a similar 4.9ft from the south with a 12-second period, but the cross-on breeze will keep it a bit messy. The energy is still strong (630), but it’s not as clean as the Friday.
Looking further out, the 29th of July looks promising again. We’re looking at 7.5ft of swell from the SSW with a short 8-second period, but the morning has clean offshore winds. The energy is very strong (617). That’s a big one for the experts – 7.5ft is pushing into the big stuff, so it’s not for beginners. The 30th of July also has a solid 5.9ft with glassy conditions in the morning, which is a great option.
For the standout, I’m calling it: Friday the 24th of July, Barrinha. The swell is consistent at 6.2ft from the south, the energy is strong, and the offshore breeze will give you clean, punchy waves. It’s the best day of the whole run. The 29th also looks like a big-swell day for the experienced crew, but the 24th is the one for the masses.
