The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
We have a bit of a waiting game this week. The surf is pretty average through the first few days, but don't lose hope. There's a serious pulse of swell due in on Monday the 24th that’s got my attention.
First up, Barrinha is a fairly exposed spot, pretty consistent, and it likes a south-east swell. The water temp is sitting at 67°, which is about normal for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The weekend starts off marginal. Saturday morning the 22nd has a clean 8ft swell from the south, but it's a bit messy with a cross-offshore breeze and the energy is moderate (1048). Afternoon drops a touch to 7ft, still clean but not great. Sunday morning the 23rd is a different story – we get glassy conditions with a 7ft south swell, 11-second period, and the energy is solid (1022). The comment says to expect very good surf. That's the pick of the early run. Sunday afternoon stays clean enough but gets a bit crossed up with a light cross-shore breeze.
Now, here’s the standout. Monday morning the 24th is a beast. We’re looking at a 10ft swell from the south with a very long 14-second period. The energy is massive (3253). The wind is glassy and the conditions are described as favourable. However, and this is a big however, 10ft is too big for beginners and is only for experienced surfers. The swell is predicted to be too big for this break, so only the locals who know the peak will get the goods. Afternoon on Monday drops to 8ft but gets a cross-onshore wind, so that morning window is the one to chase.
After that, the wheels fall off a bit. Tuesday the 25th through to Thursday the 28th, the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell drops. The energy levels drop right off, hitting 25 on the 29th. There's a long gap of poor to ordinary conditions. Friday morning the 28th has a tiny 2ft south-south-east swell with a light cross-offshore, but it’s just surfable, nothing special.
The surf then flatlines into the first week of September. Tuesday afternoon the 1st of September sees a sudden bump: a 7ft swell from the south with a short 7-second period. The energy is moderate (500) and the conditions are glassy, so expect good surf. That’s a promising blip. Wednesday morning the 2nd of September keeps it going with a 5ft south-south-west swell, offshore wind, and clean conditions (617 energy). That’s another solid window.
The rest of the second week looks small and choppy. Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th have small, clean but weak surf. Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of September get blown out by strong north-north-east winds and small, messy swell. The energy levels are low, and the wind is onshore. Not worth paddling out.
The best on offer is undoubtedly Monday morning the 24th of August – that massive groundswell from the south with glassy conditions. But it’s a heavy one. The second best is Sunday morning the 23rd of August – clean, solid, and more manageable. For the second week, keep an eye on Tuesday afternoon the 1st of September and Wednesday morning the 2nd of September – those are promising but a bit less certain.
Rusty.
