Praia do Tombo Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here, and look, I won’t sugarcoat it – the next couple of weeks at Praia do Tombo are a mixed bag. We’re in for a long stretch of small, average surf, with a couple of brief windows where it might actually get good. The water is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might not need the thickest rubber.

The surf story kicks off Tuesday morning, the 4th of August, with tiny 0.3ft southerly swell. It’s glassy, and there’s a long period of 13 seconds to it, so the energy is weak (64). It’s surfable but very ordinary – not really worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate. Wednesday morning is similar, with 0.6ft south swell and a bit more energy (121), but still just average. The wind stays glassy early, so it’s clean, but the swell is just too small to get excited about.

Thursday and Friday remain small, with heights between 0.3ft and 0.5ft, and the energy drops right off (40-72). Friday morning has a gentle offshore wind, but the swell is practically non-existent. It’s a real flat spell.

Saturday morning, the 8th, sees a tiny 0.4ft SSE swell with a very long period of 15 seconds, and it’s glassy. The energy is moderate (117), but the swell is so small it’s hard to call it a wave. Saturday afternoon picks up a bit to 0.9ft south swell, but the cross-onshore wind chops it up.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Sunday morning, the 9th of August, is the standout. We’ve got a clean 1.0ft south swell with a solid 13-second period, and it’s glassy. The combined energy is moderate (329), and the wind is off the land – this is the best looking session in the first week. The waves will be clean and lined up, perfect for a beginner spot. Given it’s consistent and rated for beginners, this is your window. Crowds are possible, so get in early.

Sunday afternoon goes south with a cross-onshore wind, and the quality drops right off. Monday the 10th is messy with cross-shore winds and a bumpy 1ft SSE swell. Not great.

Tuesday the 11th morning brings a jump in size to 2ft south swell, with strong energy (1212), but the wind is cross-shore and the conditions are marginal. That’s too big for beginners, and the chop will make it tricky for everyone. Tuesday afternoon stays rough.

The rest of the second week is a write-off for most of it. Wednesday the 12th through to Monday the 17th is mostly poor, with small, wind-affected surf. The only real glimmer is Friday morning, the 14th of August, where we get a clean 0.9ft SSE swell with a long 14-second period, and a cross-offshore wind. The energy is solid (359), and the waves will be clean. It’s a decent option, but still small.

Tuesday the 18th is flat and poor. Then, on Wednesday the 19th of August, we see a 2ft south swell with a 13-second period and moderate energy (790). The wind is cross-shore, so it’s a bit bumpy, but the size is there. It’s a marginal call, but for the more experienced surfer, it might be worth a look.

Overall, the best bet is Sunday morning the 9th – clean, glassy, and a small but fun wave for beginners. Friday the 14th is a solid second option for a cleaner session. After that, it’s a long wait until the 19th, but that’s a bigger, messier wave. Stay patient.
