The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on offer for Molhe de Picarras over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, so the big picture is we've got a run of small, rideable waves coming through, but nothing that's going to blow your socks off. The water's running a bit colder than normal for this time of year at 63°F.
Tuesday, 14 July kicks things off. The morning's cloudy with a light 3 mph offshore from the SW, and we've got 4ft of swell from the SE at 10 seconds. It's clean, with moderate wave energy (256). It's surfable, but very ordinary. Come Tuesday afternoon, the wind swings around to a glassy E at 3 mph, and the swell bumps up just a fraction to 4ft from the SE, period still 10 seconds, and wave energy climbs a little (293). Glassy conditions are a major positive, so it'll be clean, but it's still just surfable, not special. This break is a sheltered breakwater spot, and it's inconsistent, so don't expect a constant parade of waves.
Wednesday, 15 July morning is the standout of the whole forecast. We've got glassy conditions with a light WNW breeze at 3 mph, 4ft of swell coming from the ESE at 10 seconds, and wave energy is solid (281). It's glassy, which is gold. This is the best on offer for the whole 16-day window. The afternoon goes to rubbish though – onshore NNE wind at 6 mph, and poor conditions.
From Thursday, 16 July right through to Tuesday, 28 July, it's a pretty flat and ordinary run. Mornings will sometimes offer a clean, glassy wave between 2ft and 4ft, but the afternoons are consistently written off with onshore winds and poor surf. There's a gap of several days here with no real recommendations. The swell direction is mostly from the E or ENE with a short period of 8 seconds, which isn't great for shape.
There is a little blip on Monday, 20 July afternoon where the swell height hits 5ft from the NE and the combined energy jumps up to 414 (moderate), but the wind is onshore and the conditions are described as marginal. Not worth getting excited about.
Wednesday, 22 July afternoon brings a 2ft SE swell with a longer 14-second period and a cross-shore 9 mph wind – that'll be choppy and not user-friendly.
Thursday, 23 July sees a 2ft SE groundswell at 12 seconds, and both morning and afternoon are glassy, but it's still just surfable and very ordinary.
Friday, 24 July morning is back to 4ft from the E with a short 7-second period, glassy wind, but again, just surfable.
Saturday, 25 July morning is probably the next best bet after that Wednesday – 4ft from the E at 8 seconds, glassy conditions with a WNW 3 mph offshore. Clean, but small and short period.
And then Sunday, 26 July morning is similar – 4ft from the E, clean with a cross-offshore breeze. But it's the same story: small, short period, and inconsistent.
For the last few days, from Monday, 27 July through to Wednesday, 29 July, the swell drops right off to 2ft-3ft and the conditions are mostly poor. Not worth the paddle.
Overall, if you're keen, the Wednesday 15 July morning is your best shot – glassy, clean, and the most energy. Saturday 25 July morning is a solid second option, also glassy. This spot is inconsistent and a beginner-friendly breakwater, so don't expect pumping barrels. It's just clean, small fun.
Rusty.
