The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Baduska over the next two weeks is a tough one. There's a whole lot of nothing happening, and then a few glimpses of something that might just be worth a look. Water temp is sitting at about 79°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The early part of the run is a write-off. From Friday the 31st of July right through to Saturday the 2nd of August, the wave energy is weak (47 to 99), with a tiny east-southeast swell around 2ft to 3ft. The wind is a mess – cross and cross-onshore all the way – and the call is poor surf. Don't bother paddling out.
Then, on Sunday the 2nd of August, we get a tiny shift. The morning glass off is a major positive. The swell is still small at 3ft from the east, period a short 7 seconds, but the energy picks up a bit to 114 (moderate). The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It's not a classic, but if you're desperate, that glassy morning window is your best bet this weekend. It’s a minor thing, but clean 3ft waves are better than nothing.
Monday the 3rd of August morning is the only real standout in the whole forecast. The swell ticks up to 4ft from the southeast, with a period of 8 seconds and the energy climbing to 291 (moderate). The wind is glassy, dead calm, from the ESE. The report says "expect good surf conditions." This is the one. The swell direction is right on the money from the ESE, which is the optimum for Baduska. Get on it. It ain't going to be huge, but it will be clean and fun. The afternoon turns onshore, so the morning session is the key.
After that, it’s a long, grim grind. From Tuesday the 4th of August all the way through to Saturday the 15th of August, the swell is all over the shop but generally small (3ft to 4ft) and short period (7-8 seconds). The wind is almost always cross-onshore, onshore, or just messy. The reports are a steady stream of "poor surf conditions" with only a few days hitting "surfable but ordinary." The energy is mostly moderate (100-379) but the quality just isn't there. There are a few glassy mornings here and there, like on Thursday the 6th and Saturday the 8th of August, but the swell is so weak and poorly formed it's not worth the drive. The 11th of August Tuesday morning has a nice clean cross-offshore wind from the north, but the swell is still just 4ft and short period. It's a tease.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, the only time you should be waxing up is the glassy morning of Monday the 3rd of August. The rest of the period is a lot of waiting, watching, and hoping the forecasts change. This is a tough stretch for Baduska.
Rusty.
