The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s going on through the finder.

Honestly, mate, the outlook for the whole 16 days at Chuns and Jocks Reefs is a struggle. Straight up, there's no good surf on offer for the entire period. The swell is tiny, never getting above 3 ft, and the wind is always a cross-off, never swinging clean offshore. It’s a real flat spell.

For the first week, through to the morning of Saturday 10 August, the swell barely reaches 1.0 ft or 1 ft. The odd pulse pops up on the afternoon of Thursday 8 August, with a 1.0 ft swell from the SW and a period of 18 seconds, giving a combined wave energy of 59 (weak). But the wind is still a cross-off from the E at 15 mph. It’s clean, but there’s just not enough push or shape to make it worth paddling out.

The second week doesn’t get much better. From Monday 12 August, the swell finally starts to build a little, hitting 2 ft on the morning of Thursday 15 August out of the W at 17 seconds, with energy moving into the moderate range at 140. Still, the wind remains cross-off from the E at 12–15 mph. The best-looking energy comes on the morning of Tuesday 20 August: 3 ft from the W at 13 seconds, with energy at 264 (moderate). But with the wind swinging from ENE at 15–18 mph and staying cross-off, it’s still all “poor surf conditions” all the way through.

Water temperature is 80° with a tiny anomaly of 0.5° – that’s about average for the time of year. No drama there, but no swell to enjoy it.

There’s no standout here. If you’re desperate, the afternoons of Saturday 17 and Tuesday 20 August might offer the most energy (229 and 264 respectively) for a rare ride on a reef that very consistently breaks, but it’ll be frustrating with the wind. For beginners, anything over 2 ft can be a challenge here, but with the wind and the small size, it’s not really a beginner day either. For the experts, there’s just not enough push.

If you’re thinking of kiting, the consistent cross-off wind over exposed reef might actually be more interesting for that than for a paddle session. But for surf, this is a solid blank run.

Rusty.
