The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at what's on the cards for our stretch of coast.
To be brutally honest, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and quiet. The water's warm, about 69°F, which is much warmer than we'd normally expect for this time of year, so that's a nice touch. But the swell? It's just not there. We're looking at a long stretch of small, weak waves. For the first week, from Tuesday the 18th right through to the following Monday, the 31st of August, it's mostly tiny stuff. The combined energy of the swells is pathetic, often sitting between 13 and 85 (weak energy), so you're really not missing much. There are a few moments where the wind goes glassy, like on the morning of the 20th or the 23rd, but with a wave height of just 1.0ft to 1ft, there's hardly anything to ride.
The only tiny flicker of life comes on the afternoon of Friday the 21st of August. Paralelas (point) will see a slight bump to 3ft from the east, with a short period of 8 seconds. The wind will be blowing offshore from the SW, so the wave faces will be clean. The energy jumps a bit to 161 (moderate wave energy), but the conditions are still described as "very ordinary." It's surfable, but barely. Don't get your hopes up.
Then there's another gap of nothing until the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September. That morning, the swell picks up again to 3ft from the east, with a 9-second period and glassy conditions. The combined energy is a solid 290 (moderate wave energy), which is the best we've seen. It's still not a standout, but it's the only window in the whole 16 days that looks like it might produce a few fun, clean waves at Paralelas.
So, honestly, if you're desperate for a paddle, the afternoons of the 21st of August and the morning of the 2nd of September are your only real shots. For everything else, leave the board in the car. The setup is just too small and weak to get excited about. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but right now, I’d be finding something else to do.
Rusty.
