The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight up: this is a pretty flat run for Praia do Plaza. The first week and a half offers nothing worth paddling out for, with tiny, weak swells and average at best conditions. There’s a gap of about 10 days before anything worth mentioning finally shows up. The water’s sitting at 65°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Starting Wednesday the 22nd of July, we’ve got a 3ft ENE swell with a short 8-second period, but the wind is a messy NW cross-off at 16 mph. The combined energy is weak at 116. It’s poor, just forget it. Thursday morning the 23rd is a little better, with a 3ft ENE swell, SSW wind at 6 mph, but it’s still cross-off and the energy drops to 99. You could get a few ordinary ones, but don’t expect much. Friday the 24th through to the end of the month is a blur of tiny, weak swells under 3ft, with periods of glassy or light offshore winds, but the swell is just too small and the energy is mostly in the 30-90 range. It’s basically a lake.
Things finally start to look up on Saturday the 1st of August. The morning is still small at 4ft from the east, but it’s glassy with light rain and the energy jumps to 193. The afternoon is the real standout: a 5ft E swell, period 8 seconds, combined energy 248, and light NW winds at 3 mph making it clean. This is the best on offer in the whole 16 days. The swell direction (E) is a bit off the optimum NNE, but the energy is moderate and the conditions are clean. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have some company. Sunday the 2nd still has some 4ft E swell with glassy conditions in the morning, energy 169, but it’s not quite as punchy. Monday the 3rd shows a 3ft E swell in the morning, with SSE winds at 6 mph offshore, clean, energy 132. It’s surfable, but nothing special.
The best window is definitely the afternoon of Saturday the 1st of August. Get out there, it’s the only real chance of a decent session this whole outlook.
