The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell you what I'm seeing for the next couple of weeks here at Praia do Plaza. First up, the water's sitting at 65°, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year – nothing weird going on there.
Honestly, mate, the outlook is a bit flat and ordinary for the most part. There's no real standout swell on the horizon that's gonna get the heart pumping. The wave energy is weak for a lot of the period, with combined swell energy values often dropping below 100 (moderate energy). It’s a real mixed bag of small, short-period windswell coming mostly from the ENE and ESE, rarely topping 3 ft. The consistency is there, but the quality is the problem.
Right from the get-go on Wednesday the 22nd, we've got some small waves. The morning is actually your best bet for the week, with a glassy 3 ft ENE swell (period 8 seconds) – clean conditions, light rain, but the wave comment says it's just "surfable but very ordinary." The energy is weak at 140. That afternoon though, heavy rain and a cross-shore wind ruin it.
Thursday the 23rd is more of the same – clean in the morning with a cross-offshore breeze on that 3 ft ENE swell, but it's still just ordinary. The energy drops to 115. Friday the 24th gets even smaller, down to 2 ft, and the swell energy plummets to 51. There's a bit of a bump on Saturday the 25th afternoon, with the swell switching to a 3 ft ESE, hitting 194 energy, but it's cross-onshore and choppy – messy. Not worth it.
The pattern continues with small, often messy conditions right through the end of July. You'll get some glassy moments, like Tuesday the 28th morning on a 2 ft ESE swell (energy 82) and Friday the 31st with glassy 3 ft ENE swell (energy 65), but it's all just tiny and weak. The swell direction is ENE, which is okay for an exposed spot, but nothing special.
Heading into August, the first weekend (1st and 2nd) is still small. Sunday the 2nd morning has a glassy 3 ft ENE swell (energy 91), but it's still just surfable, not exciting. Then we drop off again. There is a little flicker on Wednesday the 5th of August – a 2 ft ENE swell with a period of 10 seconds, which is a bit longer, with clean cross-offshore winds. The energy is 96, still weak, but that little bit of extra period might give it a touch more push. But again, it's a long way off and the energy is low.
In short: there's no big swell, no real standouts. The best you can hope for is a few clean, glassy windows on small waves. If you're desperate for a paddle, the mornings on Wednesday 22nd, Thursday 23rd, Tuesday 28th, Friday 31st, and maybe Sunday 2nd August are your only real chances for anything remotely clean. But don't get your hopes up for anything with any power or shape.
Rusty.
