The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let me give you the straight story on what's coming up for Corals. It's a bit of a tough spell ahead, so brace yourselves.
Right now, the outlook is flat and grim. Through the 16-day window, we're looking at a long, frustrating gap with no real surf to get excited about. The swell is tiny and weak, with almost no energy to speak of. The first week and a half are a write-off. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, the waves are small, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is a mess—cross-shore, onshore, or just plain messy. The combined energy is a paltry 78 (weak) at best, and most days it's barely a ripple. Water temp is sitting at 78°, which is about normal for this time of year.
We do see a bit of a pulse starting to build around Wednesday the 27th of August, with a longer period swell from the SSE (16 seconds) bringing some energy up to 374 (moderate). But the swell height is still a tiny 2ft, and the wind is onshore from the ENE, which is not going to do us any favours. It's a tease, really. The conditions are labelled "poor surf conditions" across the board.
By the time we get into the second week, the swell picks up a touch. From the 29th of August through the 5th of September, we see heights consistently around 4ft to 5ft. The period stays short, mostly 7 to 8 seconds, so it's windswell, not groundswell. The energy climbs into the 200s (moderate), but the wind remains stubbornly cross-onshore or onshore from the NE and ENE. It's going to be choppy, bumpy, and uninspiring. The best you can say is that on the 5th of September, the swell hits 5ft, but with a moderate breeze from the ESE making it choppy, it's really only for the diehards.
There is no standout here. No break to highlight. The forecast is a long, flat, and bumpy run. Corals is a consistent reef, but it just can't do anything with this setup. The optimum swell is from the east, and we do get some of that, but the wind and the lack of size kill it. Honestly, with the onshore winds and the short-period chop, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It's a blank run, and for this area, that's just how it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, but right now, I'd leave the board at home.
Rusty.
