The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow burner, but there are a couple of windows that’ll get you out of the house.
The first few days are pretty average. The swell is there, but it’s a messy, short-period ESE windswell that’s blown out by cross-onshore winds. The combined wave energy is moderate, sitting around 524 (moderate wave energy) on Sunday morning and climbing to 626 (moderate wave energy) in the afternoon, but it’s just not clean. You’ll be battling a gentle cross-onshore and a fair bit of chop, so it’s really only for the die-hards.
Now, if you can wait, Monday morning the 20th is where things start to look up. The wind drops to a glassy 5 km/h from the south, and the sea goes flat and clean. The swell is a consistent 6 ft from the ESE, still that short 8-second period, but the complete lack of wind makes it a worthwhile session. The water is a warm 78°, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Tuesday morning the 21st also looks tidy. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the south at 5 km/h, giving you clean lines. The swell holds at 6 ft to 6 ft, and the energy is moderate (412). It’s a solid, surfable morning.
But the real standout of the whole run is Wednesday morning, the 22nd of July. This is the pick of the litter. The swell bumps up to 7 ft from the east, still with a short 8-second period, but the wind is glassy out of the southeast at just 5 km/h. The conditions are being described as very good, and the combined energy is a solid 568 (moderate wave energy). This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a bit of size, so it might be a handful for beginners, but for the rest of us, it’s going to be a fun, clean morning at Tiririca.
After that, the swell drops off quickly. Thursday the 23rd is smaller at 5 ft and glassy in the morning, but the energy is dropping (264). Friday through the end of the month is a real lull, with wave heights dropping to 3 ft to 3 ft and poor to very ordinary conditions. The wind is messy, and the period drops to 7 seconds. There’s a solid gap of about 5 days here where it’s honestly not worth paddling out.
We get a bit of a pulse again on the 2nd of August. Sunday morning the 2nd has a glassy 5 ft from the ESE with a 7-second period and moderate energy (253). It’s a good, clean morning for a longboard or a funboard, but it’s not the power of that Wednesday session.
The final few days on the 3rd of August show a bit more size – 4 ft from the ESE with a 12 mph cross-offshore wind – but it’s a marginal forecast with moderate energy (371), and that wind is a bit stiff. It’s a possibility, but not my first choice.
So, to wrap it up: the absolute best bet is Wednesday morning, the 22nd of July. Get there early for the glassy 7 ft east swell. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are also solid morning options. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
