The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break down the same stretch, but in feet and knots.
We're looking at a run that starts off pretty average, but there's a real pulse of energy building in the second week for Tiririca. The water temp is sitting right around 79°, which is bang on normal for this time of year, so you won't need a thick suit.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a wash with cross-onshore winds and choppy, poor surf. The swell is there, about 4 to 7 feet, coming from the ESE and SE, but the wind is just messing it up. The wave energy is moderate, but it's not doing anything for us.
Now, Monday the 20th is where it gets interesting. The morning is a glassy standout. The wind drops to nothing, and it's glassy. The swell is a clean 6 feet from the ESE with a short period of 8 seconds, so it's a bit of a junky beach break, but with zero wind, it'll be rideable. The combined energy is moderate. This is your best chance for a fun, uncrowded session if you're a beginner, but just be aware it's a consistent spot, so crowds are possible. The key here is the glassy conditions.
Tuesday the 21st follows a similar pattern. A glassy morning again with a 6 foot easterly swell. The energy is moderate. That morning window is the one to nail. The afternoons are a bit more cross-onshore and less clean.
We then hit a dry spell from Wednesday the 22nd through to the end of the first week. The swell drops, and the winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore. It's a gap of about 4 days with nothing really worth paddling out for. The wave energy drops to weak by the 26th.
Then it starts to build again. The mornings of the 29th and 30th of July offer some clean, cross-offshore winds with a small bump in energy. The swell is only 3 to 5 feet from the SE and ESE, but it's clean, so a longboarder might get a few.
But the real standout... the one that has my pulse going... is the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of August. We see a solid jump in size. Saturday morning the 1st has 7 feet from the east, and by the afternoon it's 8 feet. The period stretches to 9 seconds, and the combined energy rockets up to strong to very strong. This is expert territory. The wind is onshore, but the power is undeniable. Sunday the 2nd holds that 8 feet from the east with a 10-second period and energy in the very strong range. The wind is cross-onshore and choppy with rain showers, so it's not going to be perfect. This is a big, powerful, challenging swell. For a strong paddler, it's a go, but it's raw and unruly.
So to wrap it up: the best clean, smaller wave window is Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st in the morning. The big, powerful, expert-only surf is the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of August. The setup looks more interesting for experienced surfers than beginners.
Rusty.
