The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about what’s cookin’ for the next couple weeks. Honestly, it’s a tough stretch. We’ve got a big fat gap at the start with no decent surf on offer. You’re looking at a long, quiet run with hardly a ripple worth paddling out for.
Over the first few days, the only break that pops up is Tiririca. On Sunday morning (23 August) we get a very small push: a 2ft swell from the ENE, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined swell energy is weak (56). The wind is glassy, coming light from the SE, so the surface is clean. But honestly, it’s tiny and weak, so only a beginner would get a kick out of it. The water temp is about average for this time of year. For the rest of that day and through Monday and Tuesday, it stays small and the breeze swings cross-on, messing up whatever little bump there is.
On Wednesday morning (26 August) the swell bumps up slightly to 3ft from the east, period still just 7 seconds, and the winds go glassy again from the ENE. The energy ticks up to moderate (164), but it’s still small and ordinary. If you’re desperate for a splash, this is the best of a bad bunch in the first week. But it’s nothing to write home about.
Moving into the second part of the week, we see a shift in source direction. On Thursday morning (27 August) we get a long-period groundswell (16 seconds!) arriving from the SSE, but it’s only 2ft. That’s frustrating – all that energy with a period that long (304 – strong energy) but no height to go with it. The wind is onshore from the east, so it’s a tease. This style of swell is better suited for a point or reef, not a beach break, so at Tiririca it’s likely to just close out or not break at all.
The rest of the week and into the next, the swell slowly builds to around 4ft to 5ft by Saturday (29 August) and Sunday (30 August) , always from the east, but the wind is consistently cross-on or onshore from the northeast. The periods stay short (7-8 seconds), meaning weak, choppy, messy conditions. The combined energy rises into the moderate range (195 to 278), but the quality is poor. Not worth the paddle.
By the time we hit early September (Monday 31st onward), the swell height gets up to 5ft to 6ft from the east, with short periods still. The wind mostly stays onshore from the northeast, creating choppy, blown-out conditions. The energy readings get into the strong range (300 to 417), but the wave quality remains poor. For experienced surfers, the 5ft to 6ft swell at Tiririca is not too big, but with that wind and short period, it’s just a mess – more of a kitesurfing vibe than a paddle-surf session.
The standout window, if you can even call it that, is Sunday morning (23 August) and Wednesday morning (26 August) for the glassy conditions. But the swell is so small it barely registers. Everything else is a write-off.
In summary: It’s a lean run. No true standouts. The first real surfable swell is days away and even then it’s wind-affected. Don’t hold your breath. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s looking pretty ordinary.
