The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next few weeks at Tiririca are lookin’ pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions ahead, so don’t get your hopes up too high. There’s a bit of a gap here with nothing really worth paddling out for, so let me break it down for you.
Right off the bat, Friday morning, August 21, we’ve got a tiny bit of hope. Swell is around 3 ft from the ESE, period 8 seconds, with glassy conditions from a light NW breeze. Water temp’s sittin’ at 78°, which is pretty much average for this time of year – nothin’ wild. The combined energy is weak, only 120, so it’s small and lackin’ punch. It’s surfable but honestly, very ordinary. Not a standout by any stretch.
From Friday afternoon through the rest of the day and into the weekend, it’s all downhill. Winds turn onshore or cross-on, swell stays tiny – 2 ft to 3 ft – and the energy drops off. Saturday morning has a bit of cross-on wind from the N at 10 km/h, and the period is a short 6 seconds, so the waves are weak and messy. Sunday morning has another glassy moment with a 2 ft swell from the ENE, but again, period is short and energy is only 55. It’s surfable, but barely.
Monday and Tuesday follow the same pattern: small swell, cross-on winds, and poor conditions. Tuesday morning the 25th has another glassy window with 3 ft from the E, period 8 seconds, and energy at 121 – still weak, but at least it’s clean. Still, nothing to write home about.
Wednesday the 26th morning is the last real chance for a surfable session in the first week. Swell’s 3 ft from the E, period 7 seconds, glassy conditions with a light NE breeze, and energy up to 174. It’s still just “surfable but ordinary” – you might get a couple of fun ones if you’re desperate, but don’t expect much.
After that, from Thursday the 27th onward, it’s a long stretch of poor surf. The swell tries to pick up a bit – Thursday morning has 3 ft from the E with 8 seconds and energy 209 – but winds are onshore and the conditions are junk. Thursday afternoon gets a pulse of long-period 15-second swell from the SSE, energy 229, but it’s all onshore wind and the waves are messy. That long-period stuff would be better at a point break or reef, not a beach break like this.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are more of the same: onshore winds, short-period chop, and energy that looks bigger but it’s all blown out. By Sunday the 30th morning, we’ve got 3 ft from the ESE, 8 seconds, cross-on wind, and it’s still poor.
The second week doesn’t get any better. Monday August 31 through Saturday September 5 is a grind – winds mostly cross-on or onshore, swell hovering around 3 ft to 4 ft, periods short (6-8 seconds), and the energy ranges from 145 up to 283. But the conditions are consistently poor: choppy, messy, and not worth the paddle. Saturday September 5 afternoon has the highest energy at 268, but with 12 mph cross-on wind and short 7-second period, it’s just a churned-up mess. More of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. The best of a bad bunch is probably Wednesday morning August 26 – that 3 ft glassy window with a bit of energy – but even that’s nothin’ special. If you’re really jonesin’, you might get a few limp waves on the glassy mornings, but otherwise, save your energy. Crowds at Tiririca can show up sometimes, but with surf this poor, even the locals might stay home.
Keep an eye on the forecasts – it tends not to stay this flat forever, and things can change. But for now, it’s a long dry spell.
