The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. I've had a look at the charts for our stretch of coast, and I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty bleak run for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a long stretch where the surf just isn’t going to be worth paddling out for. We're talking about a solid 16-day window with nothing I’d call a proper session. The swell is just too weak and the winds are mostly on it or cross-onshore, which is going to keep things messy.
Let’s start with this Saturday, the 22nd. We've got tiny 2ft windswell from the ESE, and it's just poor. The early light breeze from the N is cross, not helping, and the energy is weak (82). This is not a day for the board.
Sunday the 23rd is the closest thing we get to a highlight, and even that is saying something. The morning looks glassy with a light E breeze, and we have the same knee-high 2ft swell (56 energy). It’s surfable, but as I say, very ordinary. If you’re absolutely desperate and a beginner, you might find a few grovelly ones. But for the rest of us, it’s a pass. The window of clean conditions is short, as the afternoon breeze swings onshore.
The next couple of days, Monday and Tuesday, are more of the same – small, weak swell (in the 45-83 energy range), with light cross-onshore winds messing up the already tiny waves. The size bumps slightly to 3-3ft on Tuesday, but the wind is on it, so it’ll be lumpy.
We get a bit more energy on Wednesday the 26th (160-191), but it’s still just 3ft and the wind stays on it. Then, things get interesting but not in a good way. Thursday the 27th brings a long-period groundswell from the SSE – 16 seconds – but the height is still only 2ft. The energy jumps to strong (296), but with that period and size, it just won't break properly on our beach. It’s too straight, too weak. The wind is also on it, so it’s a washout.
Friday the 28th, we start to see the swell pick up a bit, but it's still not clean. The morning is a marginal call with a 14-second swell, but the NE wind is cross-onshore. Quality just isn't there.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th sees the swell nudge up to 4-5ft, but the wind, mostly NE, is either cross-onshore or onshore and fairly choppy. Even with moderate energy (over 200), the poor conditions kill it.
This pattern holds through the middle of next week – first week of September. We’re stuck with onshore winds and that lumpy 4-5ft of windswell. It’s all poor. The water temp is about average for this time of year, sitting around 78°, so that’s not a problem, it’s just everything else.
We do see a jump in energy for the 6th of September, with a 6ft SSW swell showing 315 energy, but the SE winds are cross-onshore and there’s rain showers around. That’s just a stormy mess, more interesting for the kite crew than for us. The setup looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.
So, there you have it. A long, flat, and messy outlook. The only thing I can say is that with the consistency we usually see, this kind of blank run doesn’t tend to last forever. The forecasts can change, so we’ll keep an eye on it. But for now, save the wax.
Stay patient,
Rusty
