The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
To be honest, the start of this forecast period is a bit of a letdown. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions with very little to get excited about. The first real window of surf isn’t until Thursday, 20 August, but it’s a one-morning wonder.
Tiririca is the only break in the game. Thursday morning, 20 August, brings a clean 4ft swell from the ESE with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is glassy – dead calm – so the surface will be like a mirror. The combined wave energy reads 227, which is a moderate push. This is a beginner-friendly spot, and it’s consistent, so this morning session is the clear standout. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird going on there. Keep in mind, crowds are sometimes here, so don’t expect to have it all to yourself.
After that morning, it’s a real downer. Thursday afternoon turns poor with a cross-on wind, and from Friday, 21 August, right through to the end of the first week, it’s mostly poor surf with small, weak swells and messy wind. Most of the readings are below 100 for combined energy, just weak, choppy dribble.
There’s a shift around the middle of the second week. From Wednesday, 27 August, we start seeing some longer period swells, but the wind is onshore, and the swell heights are tiny – around 2ft. The combined energy jumps up (358 on Thursday morning, 27 August), but that’s from a long-period, 18-second groundswell. For a beach break like Tiririca, that kind of long period tends to make waves break too straight, so it’s more of a miss than a hit. The conditions are poor, no good.
The last few days of the period into early September look like more of the same: small, onshore, and poor. The swell sizes hover around 3ft to 5ft, but the wind is always on or cross-on, making it sloppy. There’s a marginal call on the morning of 4 September, but nothing to plan a trip around.
So, the honest take: Thursday morning, 20 August, is your only real shot. Get out there early for glassy, clean 4ft waves from the ESE. After that, it’s a long, quiet stretch. The surf just isn’t cooperating this time around.
Rusty.
