The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of August 21st, so we’ve got a few days of quiet to start with. From the 18th through the 20th, it’s pretty much a write-off: messy, choppy, cross-onshore winds, and the swell is just not cooperating. The waves that do show up are wind-affected and not worth paddling out for.
The standout window is the morning of Friday, August 21st. That’s where we get our best shot. Head to Tiririca. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, typically consistent, and the early session looks like a dream. The wind is glassy, dead calm, and we’ve got a 3 ft swell rolling in from the ESE. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s a bit of a local windswell, but that clean, smooth surface will make it feel better than it is. The combined wave energy is weak, at 126, but for a beginner wave, this is about as user-friendly as it gets. The water temp is sitting at 79°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no wetsuit needed. Keep in mind, this spot can get crowded sometimes, and with conditions this good, it’s likely everyone will have the same idea.
After that Friday morning brief moment of glory, things fade quickly. The afternoon of the 21st turns onshore, and from Saturday the 22nd all the way through to the end of the month, it’s a mix of small, weak, and messy surf. There’s a tiny pulse on the morning of Wednesday, August 26th, with a bit more energy (219) and 3 ft waves, but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s going to be bumpy. The morning of Friday, August 28th, is another marginal call with 4 ft from the E, but again, the wind angle isn’t doing us any favors.
Further out, towards the 30th and 31st, the swell bumps up a bit – we’re seeing 5 ft to 6 ft from the ENE and NE. But the period is still a short 7 seconds, and the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore every time. That size with that wind direction at a beach break setup is going to be a choppy, bumpy mess – honestly, it looks more interesting for the kite surfers than for paddle surfing. The combined energy hits 387 on the 30th, but it’s just not clean.
So, bottom line: if you’re keen, make the call for that Friday morning, August 21st. It’s the only real window of clean, glassy fun. The rest of the forecast is a waiting game. Don’t lose hope, though – it tends not to stay this poor for long, and forecasts can change.
Rusty.
