The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be straight: the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got one break to work with, and it’s giving us very little to get excited about.
The water temperature is sitting at 59°F, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The outlook starts on Saturday, July 18th, with some push, but it’s all a bit of a mess. Caves (Sandsend) is a point break that is fairly exposed to the north, and we’ve got a swell coming from the NNE, 6 ft – 6 ft. The period is short, around 7-8 seconds, so it’s a weak windswell, not a proper groundswell. The wind is a cross-off NNW at a solid 19 mph, which is fresh. The combined energy is moderate at 327, but the notes say “poor surf conditions” and it scores a zero. The wave face might be there, but the wind is just too strong and the quality is poor. That pattern carries right through until about Wednesday July 22nd. Even when the swell drops to 3 ft with a light offshore on the 24th, the energy is weak at 82, and the comments are “surfable but very ordinary.” Honestly, it’s not worth suiting up.
From July 25th through July 30th, it’s a long, flat, and poor run. Swell drops to 0.7 ft or 1.0 ft, periods of 4-6 seconds, energy in the single digits, and the wind is either offshore or glassy, but there’s simply no wave. Total blank run for nearly a week.
Now, there is one small flicker on Saturday, August 1st. The morning sees a jump in swell to 7 ft from the N, period 8 seconds, and the combined energy spikes to a strong 1093. That’s the only standout in the whole window. But – and it’s a big but – the wind is a light cross-onshore from the NNE. The guidance says this break’s optimum swell direction is from the N, so direction is okay, but the wind is not good for quality. The score is a 2 out of 10. Given the size at 7 ft, it’s borderline for intermediates and probably only for the more experienced. The period is short, so it won’t have much punch.
If you are desperate and can handle mess, August 1st morning is the only real option, but don’t expect anything clean. Rest of that first week of August is marginal at best.
