Table - best surf conditions forecast for Caves (Sandsend) over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight up about what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. It’s a pretty quiet start, so don’t get too amped for the first week – there’s a whole lotta nothing happening until the very end of the run.
We’re looking at a fairly drawn-out flat spell. From now, right through until the 23rd of July, we haven’t got a single swell worth paddling for. That’s a solid ten days of small, chopped-out, cross-shore junk that won’t even get you excited for a log. The water temp is sitting at a notable 61° (a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 4° above average) at the main spot, but that’s about the only thing that’s slightly different.
The real story, the only story, kicks in on Thursday the 23rd. We get a sudden pulse of energy that makes things interesting, but it comes with a major caveat. Caves (Sandsend) is our only game in town, and it finally wakes up. On Thursday the 23rd afternoon, a 8ft swell from the NNW with a moderate period of 7 seconds rolls in. The energy jumps right up (730) and with a light breeze, the conditions turn clean. That is your best window – this is the standout. It’s a decent size, but for a point break like this, the moderate period keeps it from getting too walled. Now, keep in mind this spot is known for being inconsistent, so this is a rare treat when it happens.
The following day, Friday the 24th, the swell actually peaks in size. The morning sees 10ft from the N (1431 energy) and the afternoon drops to 8ft (1703 energy) with a longer period of 9 seconds and clean conditions off a cross-offshore breeze. The problem? At that size, anything over 8ft is expert territory only. The longer period also means it’ll be a bit more powerful and straight at this setup, so be ready for a challenge. It’s surfable, but only if you’ve got the skills and the nerve. Crowds could pop up here as it’s the only show in town.
After that, it fades fast. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th drop right off, and by Monday the 27th we’re back to tiny waves. So, to wrap it up: the entire first half is a write-off. The only action is that 48-hour window from Thursday the 23rd afternoon through Friday the 24th. Thursday afternoon is the pick for the average surfer; Friday morning is for the crew looking for a heavy mission.
Rusty.
