The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, coming to you from the Caves (Sandsend) break. Let’s cut to it.
It’s been a quiet stretch and unfortunately, this 16-day window is pretty grim. We’re looking at a solid stretch of days with tiny, weak swell and poor conditions. From Monday 17th August right through to the end of the month, the surf is mostly flat to gutless, with heights barely scraping past 1 to 2ft. The combined energy here is weak, often in the single and low double digits (around 5 to 57), and even when it does tick up a bit mid-week around the 20th to 23rd, the wind just wrecks it with cross or cross-off breezes. The period is short, mostly 6-8 seconds, so there’s no real push.
The only small glimmer in the whole outlook is Saturday morning, 29th August. We finally get a little bump, 4ft from the N with a clean offshore breeze from the WNW at 12 mph. It’s still short period and only moderate energy (119), but at least it’s clean. The rest of that day sees the wind building again. It’s not classic Caves, but if you’re desperate and local, that Saturday morning is the only time the conditions and swell line up to be *surfable*.
The water temp is about 61°F which is pretty normal for the time of year.
Bottom line: there’s no standout session here. The whole 16 days is a bust for quality waves. This point is inconsistent at the best of times, and with the lack of any proper groundswell, I’d be finding something else to do. The good news is, it usually doesn’t stay this poor for long round here, so the next forecast might give us something.
Stay salty.
Rusty.
