The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Caves (Sandsend) over the next couple of weeks.
First thing’s first – the water’s sitting at 62°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Not a bad little bonus if you’re paddling out.
Right now, we’re in a bit of a flat spell. The first real surf worth talking about doesn’t show up until Saturday the 5th of September. That’s a solid gap of nearly two weeks where the wind and swell just aren’t playing ball. We’ve got a few days of small, short-period, messy windswell, but honestly, it’s going to be a frustrating wait. The wind is mostly cross-off or onshore, and the swell energy is weak (between 22 and 101 units) – not enough to get excited about. There’s a brief window on the afternoon of Saturday the 29th of August where a light offshore wind (10 km/h) and a tiny 2 ft northeast swell might make for a clean, if very small, session. But it’s really just a paddle around.
Now, the standout. Saturday the 5th of September is the day to circle on the calendar. The morning looks excellent: a clean 8 ft north swell, very long period at 9 seconds, with a solid 10 km/h offshore wind from the west. The combined energy is strong at 872 units. This is a proper groundswell, and for a point break like Caves, that means well-shaped, powerful waves with good gaps between sets. The size is pushing into expert territory at over 8 ft, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. The afternoon stays clean with a 8 ft north-northeast swell, but the wind goes light and cross, so expect a few ripples. Still, the morning session on the 5th is the best bet by a long shot.
The week leading up to it shows promise building. Thursday the 3rd of September afternoon sees a 10 ft north-east swell, but it’s a short period windswell at 7 seconds and a fresh 30 km/h offshore wind. That’s a lot of energy (714 units), but the short period will make it lumpy and unruly – only for the experienced. Friday the 4th holds a similar size (10 ft and 8 ft) but with a cross-off wind, making it a bit cleaner but still very heavy.
So, to sum it up: it’s a long, quiet wait, but the payoff on Saturday the 5th of September morning is a genuine standout. Get ready for that one.
Rusty.
