The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' at Caves (Sandsend).
First off, the water's sitting at 61° – that's a full degree warmer than usual for this time of year, so you might get away with a shorty.
Right now, it's a slow start. There's some swell rollin' in, but it's weak. Wednesday morning kicks off with a tiny 2ft northerly pulse, but the energy is barely there (44). It's clean, but honestly, it's a paddler's session, not a surfer's. We're lookin' at a pretty bleak run for a few days. Thursday brings a jump in swell size, with a 4ft on the morning and even 6ft by the afternoon, but the wind is a mess – cross-shore and lumpy, with periods as short as 6 seconds. That's just chop, my friends. The energy cranks up to 290 by Thursday afternoon, but it's all ugly.
Friday morning is the first real glimmer. The swell hits 8ft from the north, with a solid 8-second period and a clean, cross-off breeze. The combined energy is a healthy 919 – that's a proper punch. There's a lot of water moving, and the offshore wind should clean it up. This is the standout for the entire forecast. It's a big day, though – over 8ft, so this is strictly for the experienced crew. The crowd might show up (it says "sometimes"), but for good reason.
Saturday drops back a bit, with 6ft on the morning and a cleaner cross-off, but the direction shifts to the north-northeast. The energy is still solid (549), but it's not the same muscle as Friday. Sunday morning is a little smaller at 4ft, with a light cross-off and clean conditions, but it's ordinary.
Then we hit a massive gap. From Sunday afternoon right through the end of the month, it's tiny, onshore, or just plain messy. There's a moment on the 31st of August where the morning goes glassy with a 4ft easterly swell and a combined energy of 226, but it's a one-off window before the wind turns onshore again. That's a long stretch of flat or poor conditions.
The first week of September looks like a write-off. Tiny waves, offshore winds but no size. A little bump on the 3rd of September with 3ft from the northeast, but it's just ordinary.
So, the bottom line: if you're keen, make your move for Friday morning, the 21st of August. That's the day. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty, signing off.
