The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Lookin’ at the charts for the next 16 days, and I’ve gotta be straight with ya – it’s a flat spell for Caves (Sandsend). There’s no real surf to get excited about, and most of the window is a write-off for a proper paddle. You’ll be waiting a long time for anything rideable, and even then, it’s a question mark.
The water temp is sittin’ at 59°, which is about 2° warmer than usual for this time of year. A touch on the warm side, but nothin’ crazy.
The whole run from Thursday 16 July right through to the end of the month is dominated by tiny, weak waves or complete flatness. The only time the swell even nudges towards a surfable size is on Sunday 19 July, when the swell comes up to 8 ft from the NNE, with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a moderate energy swell (1094), but the wave comment says it’s marginal. The wind is clean and cross-off on the morning, but the size is big – 8 ft is well into the territory only for experienced surfers. It’s not a beginner’s wave. The afternoon drops to 8 ft, still cross-off but with a light breeze, and it’s still marginal. That’s your only real chance, and it’s not a standout. It’s inconsistent, and Caves is a point break that’s fairly exposed to the N swell, but the numbers just don’t stack up for a quality session.
The rest of the period is a desert. From Saturday 18 July, the swell is small and weak, and from Wednesday 22 July onwards, it’s basically flat – with combined energy readings of 88 or less, and often down to 0. The wind is clean at times, especially on the 24th and 26th with offshore and glassy conditions, but there’s no swell to push. The whole outlook is a long stretch of “nope.”
If you’re a kite surfer, the stronger wind days around 18–20 July might offer some fun, but for a paddle surfer, this is a big fat zero. The area just doesn’t have any consistent swells in the pipeline. It’s a tough one, but sometimes you get a blank run. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d say leave the board at home.
Rusty.
