The Lowdown
Alright, this is a grim outlook for Caves (Sandsend). The guidance points to a point break that's inconsistent, so we’re already dealing with a spot that needs careful timing. And looking at the 16-day window… it’s mostly a write-off.
The water is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, sitting at 62°F.
We kick off on Thursday the 20th of August with 4ft of northerly swell, but it’s a short period of 8 seconds and cross-shore winds of 12 mph. The combined energy is weak (164), and it’s just poor. Thursday afternoon bumps up to 5ft but the period drops to a pathetic 6 seconds – all chop, no shape.
Friday the 21st sees the swell push to 8ft, but with 22 mph cross-shore winds and a short period, the energy ramps up to moderate (670), but the quality is just messy and lumpy. This is all kite-surfing weather, not for a paddle.
Saturday the 22nd is the first real glimpse of anything surfable. The morning brings 6ft of swell from the NNE with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind shifts to a cross-offshore breeze at 12 mph. The combined energy is moderate (448), and the conditions are clean. It’s a marginal call, but it’s the best of a bad bunch. The swell direction is a bit off the optimum N, but it’s manageable. However, the break is rarely consistent, so you’re taking a gamble.
Sunday morning the 23rd is clean with 4ft and cross-offshore winds, but it’s small and the energy is weak (176). It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
The rest of the week is a dead zone. Monday the 24th is tiny, Tuesday the 25th is mostly onshore dross, and Wednesday the 26th is cross-onshore and choppy with a brief spike of a 13-second period in the afternoon – but the swell is only 1.0ft, so it’s a tease.
We get a clean window on Friday the 28th of August. The morning shows 4ft of groundswell from the NE, with a period of 9 seconds and a light offshore breeze from the WNW. The combined energy is moderate (240), and it’s clean. Saturday the 29th morning is also clean with 3ft and a cross-offshore breeze, but the period is a solid 9 seconds. These are your best chances in the second week.
The window closes again with onshore winds and lumpy conditions through to the end of the month. The first week of September is a washout, with the only decent glimpse being Friday the 4th of September morning: 4ft, offshore wind, but a short 6-second period and weak energy (88). It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for it.
Bottom line: the 16-day outlook for Caves (Sandsend) is poor. Focus on Saturday the 22nd of August morning for the cleanest, biggest (6ft) option, and then Friday the 28th of August morning for a clean, moderate energy session. Everything else is a gamble on an inconsistent break.
Rusty.
