The Lowdown

Alright, my friends, Rusty here. I’ve been poring over the charts for this stretch of coast, and I’ll level with you – it’s a rough outlook. We’re looking at a long, flat spell with only a couple of distant flickers, so don’t get your hopes up.

Starting right now, it’s pretty grim. From Monday the 14th all the way through to the end of the month, the surf is basically non-existent. The energy is just pathetic, with combined swell energy values mostly in the single digits or low double digits, and only a couple of tiny bumps barely breaking 30 (31). We’re talking ankle-snappers and knee-high dribblers. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross-off or cross, and while the water is a touch warmer than normal at about 63°F, it doesn’t help when there’s nothing to ride.

Now, there is a tiny glimmer right at the very end. On Monday the 28th of September, things get a bit more interesting for the experts. The wind swings onshore from the ESE, and we get a bit of a push from the east. Courtown (point break) sees a 4ft swell from the E, with a short period of 5 seconds. The combined energy hits a moderate 81. It’s not pretty, with onshore wind making it choppy, but it’s the biggest we’ve seen in weeks. This is for experienced surfers only; that size with a short period is going to be a messy, dumping shorebreak. To be honest, it looks more fun for the kite surfers than for us. Then Tuesday the 29th offers similar, with a 3ft swell from the SE and 80 combined energy, but it’s still cross-onshore and messy.

So, what’s the standout? It’s a sorry state, but that Monday the 28th at Courtown is our only real nod. The swell direction from the east isn’t ideal against the optimum S, but it’s what we’ve got. It’s not one for the crowds either, and the break can get busy sometimes, but with conditions this poor, you’ll probably have it to yourself. Beginners, stay well clear of this. For the rest of the period, save your wax and wait for a better forecast. It’s a proper flat spell, and while forecasts can always change, for now, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
