The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve just been scouring the charts for the next 16 days. Let’s get straight into it.

Right off the bat, I’ve got to be honest with you – this is a tough stretch for Courtown. The vast majority of this outlook is a flat, sleepy mess. We’re looking at a long, dry run of tiny waves and poor conditions, with only a flicker of hope very late in the game. The first recommendation of any real note doesn’t even show up until Wednesday, the 16th of September.

For the first two weeks, it’s basically a write-off. From the 2nd right through to the 16th, the swell heights are consistently below 3 feet, mostly sitting at 0.3 feet or 0.7 feet. The combined energy is pathetic, often just single-digit numbers (like 6 or 8) or low two-digit values (45, 44). We’re looking at a lot of weak, short-period slop. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 64°, but that’s about the only thing going for it. A few days have decent offshore or cross-off winds, but with no swell to push them, it’s just a smooth, empty ocean. You’d be better off going for a swim.

Now, on Wednesday morning, the 16th of September, things get a little interesting. The charts show a pulse of energy coming in. We’re looking at a 6 foot swell from the S, with a period of 7 seconds. That’s a short-period wind swell, but the combined energy jumps to 358 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a fresh offshore from the WNW, which will be clean. This is a standout for the whole period, but it’s a thick, short-period wave. For experienced surfers, it could be a bit of a fun, punchy session, but it’s not beginner territory. The afternoon settles down to 4 feet from the SSE, still with offshore wind, but it’s less powerful.

After that, Thursday the 17th drops back to 2 feet and 2 feet with clean conditions, but the energy is gone again. The takeaway is this: for two weeks, there’s nothing. Then, on the 16th, we get a one-day window of decent, clean, but short-period swell. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only game in town.

Crowds at Courtown can be a thing sometimes, but on this 16th, with the messy, short-period swell, it might keep the crowds a little thinner.

Rusty.
