Courtown Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next sixteen days at Courtown are looking pretty grim. This is a classic point break that’s fairly consistent, but we’re stuck in a real flat spell. The water is sitting at 65° right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 4° above average, so it’s a weirdly warm ocean for mid-August.

We start off on Wednesday, the 12th, with nothing. Swell heights are a pathetic 0.3 ft from the SW, with a combined energy of just 9 – weak as dishwater. The wind is a cross-onshore breeze at 9 mph, making it choppy and messy. Not a wave worth paddling for. That trend continues straight through the rest of the week. Thursday the 13th stays tiny, with a brief kick of 1 ft on Thursday afternoon but the period is a shocking 3 seconds – just wind slop – and the cross-shore wind at 16 mph chops it all up. Friday the 14th has a clean offshore wind at 12 mph in the morning, but the swell height is still 0.3 ft. You could float a leaf on it, not a surfboard.

The weekend isn’t any better. Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th offer 1 ft and 0.3 ft respectively, with periods all over the place. Sunday morning has a 19-second period on that 0.3 ft, which is a long-period groundswell, but with no height, it’s just a wobble. The energy readings are all below 15 – barely a ripple. We’re looking at a full week of nothing. The first week is a total blank.

Moving into the second week, it’s just more of the same. Monday the 17th through to Monday the 24th, the swell heights never crack 1 ft, and the combined energy climbs to a peak of 26 on Thursday the 20th afternoon and again on Saturday the 22nd afternoon, but that’s still very weak (26). The swells are all from the S or SSW, with short periods of 3 to 4 seconds on most days, except for a few 15-19 second pulses that just don’t have any size behind them. Winds are mostly offshore or cross-offshore, which would be clean if the surf was there, but it’s not. There’s a brief moment on Thursday the 27th morning with a glassy wind and 0.7 ft swell from the S at 7 seconds – but it’s still a flat day.

There are no standouts here. At no point does the swell size, direction, or quality come together. The optimum swell direction for Courtown is S, and we do get S swells, but they’re all under 2 ft. The whole 16-day window is a bust. For a point break that’s fairly consistent, this is a real dry spell. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, you’re better off finding another hobby for a while.

So, in short – don’t bother. The surf is essentially non-existent. If you’re desperate, maybe take a kite, but even that’s a stretch.
