The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've gotta be straight with you – the 16-day window for Courtown is a tough one. There's not a single session that I'd call a standout, and a lot of the time, the waves are just too small or messy to get excited about.

Let's start with the pattern. The whole period is dominated by tiny, weak swells. The combined wave energy never really gets going, with most readings sitting in the double digits, like a weak 14 (combined energy 14) on Thursday morning, 27 August. You'll see a bit of a bump on Saturday, 29 August, with the morning swell hitting 4 ft from the S and a period of 7 seconds, but the energy is still only moderate at 190. The wind that morning is a cross-offshore from the SW, 12 mph, so the surf will be clean, but the waves are just too small and weak to be any good. For the rest of the first week, it's a mix of onshore and cross-shore winds, with tiny swells.

The pattern continues into the second week. There's a period of tiny, ultra-long period groundswell on Tuesday, 1 September, with a 0.3 ft swell from the S at 18 seconds, but that's just a whisper of energy (combined energy 9). Wednesday, 2 September, has a pulse of 4 ft from the SSW, but the period is only 5 seconds and the wind is a messy cross-shore at 16 mph, so it's not worth paddling for. The rest of the days are filled with small, clean conditions from offshore winds, but the waves are basically flat.

Honestly, for a point break that's fairly consistent, this is a disappointing run. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. This is one of those times where the forecast is poor, and you're better off checking back in a few days – things can change. For now, the setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer on those days with a bit of cross-offshore breeze and no swell.

Rusty.
