The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’re talking about a serious flat spell. The good news is there are a few tiny windows where the ocean might just give us something to ride, but you’ll need to be checking the forecast right up until you paddle out. This is a period for the dedicated, not the casual surfer.

The first week is a write-off. From Thursday the 6th right through to Wednesday the 13th, we're looking at ankle-snappers at best. The swell energy is just pathetic, mostly in the single digits to low teens (like 4, 7, 14), with wave heights stuck at a dribbling 0.3ft. It's essentially flat. There are some clean mornings with light offshore or cross-off winds, but you’d be fighting for a wave that never comes. It's a good time to work on your tan or fix your dings.

The second week starts to show a tiny flicker of life. On Friday the 14th, we finally see the swell energy pick up a bit. The morning is still tiny at 1ft, but the afternoon bumps up to 2ft with a 4-second period. It’s barely a wave, but there’s a clean, light offshore wind from the W. It’s something, but don’t get too excited.

The real (and I use that term loosely) highlight of this whole period looks like it could be Saturday the 16th. The afternoon session shows 2ft of swell, but with a bit more energy behind it (21). The period is still short at 4 seconds, which means it’ll be a bit soft and crumbly, but it’s the most promising swell we see. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the SSE, so it won't be perfect, but it might be rideable on a longboard.

Looking further out, the end of the month, around the 21st, the wind is solidly offshore from the W, but the swell just isn't there to back it up, with wave heights still stuck at 0.3ft. It’s a frustrating tease.

So, that’s the long and short of it. A long, flat stretch with a couple of tiny blips. If you’re desperate for a paddle, keep an eye on the afternoon of the 16th, but keep your expectations low. For everything else, it’s a blank run. This is more normal for this area, but it won't stay this poor for long. Forecasts can change, so keep checking back.

Rusty, signing off.
