Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks around Courtown are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. I’ve had a good look at the charts, and honestly, there’s barely a wave worth paddling for. Most of the time the swell is tiny, period is all over the shop, and the wind is rarely doing us any favours. It’s one of those runs where you might be better off checking the kite forecast or just taking the board in for a repair.
For the first week, from Friday 3rd July right through to Friday 10th July, it’s a write-off. Swell heights are stuck at 0.3ft to 2ft, with weak combined energy readings mostly between 2 and 10 – that’s basically flat. Even the glassy mornings on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th with that slight air can’t save it. The water is about 62°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but you won’t be in it long enough to notice.
Into the second week, things don't improve much. There’s a brief pulse on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th with a NE swell up to 3ft, but the period is a short 4 seconds and the wind is cross-shore and messy. Combined energy gets to 30 on the Saturday afternoon – still very weak. It’s choppy and poor. By Saturday 18th July, we finally see a bit more size – a 3ft S swell in the morning with glassy conditions and combined energy hitting 130 (moderate), but it’s still labelled as poor surf conditions and that glass is short-lived as the afternoon turns cross-onshore with 5ft of short-period slop. Not exactly a standout.
There is no standout session in this outlook. The only mentionable moment is Saturday 18th July morning at Courtown – a point break that’s fairly consistent. You’ll get a 3ft swell from the south, glassy wind, and clean conditions. Energy is in the moderate range (130). But wave quality is still poor according to the data, so don’t expect much. The swell is just over the beginner threshold at 3ft, but it’s not big enough to be dangerous for intermediates. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so you might have company.
For the rest of the 16 days, it’s a long gap with no real recommendations. It’s a tough stretch for Courtown. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d keep your expectations on the floor.
Rusty.
