The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get this straight. I’ve looked over the numbers for the next couple of weeks, and to be honest, it’s a pretty grim picture for us here at Courtown. There’s a big, fat gap of nothing worthwhile for the first few days. We’re looking at Thursday, July 30, and the surf is practically flat with a weak 0.3ft S swell and a combined energy of just 1 – that’s barely a ripple. The wind is a cross-on from the SE at 9 mph, making it choppy and messy. It’s just not worth paddling out for.

The lack of any decent swell rolls right through the end of July and into the start of August. You’ll see a few tiny pulses but nothing that breaks the 2ft mark. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s small comfort when there’s nothing to ride. We’re looking at a solid week of poor conditions, with only a few fleeting moments of cleanish wind but no real swell to back it up.

The best we’re going to get is the morning of Friday, August 7. The swell is still tiny at 2ft from the S, but the wind swings to a glassy ENE at just 3 mph. The combined energy climbs to 25, which is still weak, but the glassy conditions will make it look like a mirror. It’s small, but it’ll be clean. A log might get a few slow ones.

Then, hold on for Saturday, August 8 afternoon. The swell jumps up to 4ft from the SSW, but the period is a short 4 seconds, so it’s going to be weak and crumbly. The combined energy hits 55. The problem is the wind is onshore from the E at 9 mph, which will make it a bumpy, messy affair. It’s the biggest swell of the period, but the quality is poor.

The run continues with a few small pulses, but nothing to get excited about until the very end. On the morning of Friday, August 14, we see a bit of hope. A 3ft NE swell with a period of 5 seconds and a combined energy of 39, and the wind is glassy from the NW at 3 mph. For a moment, it might be clean and fun on a high tide, but it’s still small.

So, the honest truth is there are no standout days. The best on offer is that glassy morning on August 7 for the small wave crew, or maybe the afternoon of August 8 if you’re desperate for a bit more size and don’t mind the bump. But for everyone else, it’s a flat spell. The setup is so weak that a kite might have more fun than a paddle board on most of these days. That’s the long and short of it.
