The Lowdown

Right then, let's have a look at what's cookin' for Courtown. I've got the next 16 days laid out here, and I'll be honest with you, it's a bit of a quiet spell. We're looking at a long stretch with barely a ripple to get excited about.

The whole 16-day window is mostly a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The swell is almost non-existent for the best part of two weeks, with the combined energy barely registering – we're talking figures like 8 and 3 (weak energy), just tiny little pulses. The water's sitting at 64°F right now, which is a touch warmer than you'd normally expect for this time of year, but that's about the only interesting bit.

Courtown is a point break that's fairly consistent, but it needs something to work with, and the swell direction needs to be from the south. You'll see pockets of glassy mornings, like on Monday the 10th and Tuesday the 11th, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft with a period that's all over the place. It's just not going to break.

The first real hint of something happens on Sunday the 16th of August, with a tiny 2ft swell from the northeast, but the period is a short 4 seconds and it's cross-shore wind. Not worth the trip.

To be honest, the only session that even gets close to being a standout is the Friday morning of the 21st of August. We've got a small 3ft swell from the north-northeast, with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is 60, which is still weak, but here's the thing: the wind is offshore from the northwest at 9 mph, keeping it clean. That gentle offshore wind is a major positive for a spot that has seen nothing but flatness. It's the best on offer, but it's still a far cry from pumping. For an intermediate, it might just be a fun little session if you're desperate for a paddle.

Other than that, the rest of the days in the second week are showing poor surf conditions or flat spells. A couple of mornings on the 24th have offshore wind, but again, with only 0.3ft of swell, there's nothing to ride. It's a long, quiet period, so keep an eye on the forecast, but for now, leave the board in the car.
