The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next 16 days at Courtown are looking like a total bust. The swell is just not showing up, and when there is a tiny pulse, the conditions are messy. If you’re hanging out for a paddle, you’re going to be waiting a long time.
We start off on Wednesday the 15th and it’s grim. The water is a very warm 63.7° – that’s much warmer than usual for this time of year, but it doesn’t help the waves. The swell is a weak 2.0ft from the east, with a short period of 4 seconds, and the combined energy is a measly 21. The wind is a cross-on from the ENE, making it choppy. It’s a write-off, and the whole first week is the same story. The 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd all show nothing but flat, tiny, or messy surf. The few little knee-high pulses are swallowed by cross-on breezes. There’s no standout, no real window, just a long stretch of flatness.
Moving into the second week, it doesn’t get any better. From the 23rd through the 30th, it’s a desert of poor surf. The biggest blip is on the 28th, with a 2.3ft swell from the northeast, period 4 seconds, and combined energy of 24. The wind is a light cross-off, so it’s clean, but the swell is weak and short-period, offering nothing of value. The rest of the days are either flat or have tiny 0.3ft south swells with very low energy, even if the wind is offshore. Honestly, the setup looks more interesting for a kite than a paddle, but the swell just isn’t there.
There is no best on offer here. It’s a blank run. For an area like Courtown, this kind of flat spell is pretty normal. Forecasts can change, but right now, don’t bother waxing up.
