The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me tell you straight up, it’s a tough stretch ahead for Courtown. Looking at the whole 16-day window, a surfer’s gonna have to be mighty patient. The honest truth is, there isn’t a single day in this forecast where the waves are worth paddling out for. We’re looking at a flat spell that runs pretty much the whole way through, with only tiny, useless bumps here and there that never get above 1 ft. For days on end, there’s literally no rideable swell at all.

Things start off quiet as a mouse on Friday afternoon the 24th, with a tiny 0.3 ft southerly groundswell at 13 seconds. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 64°F. But with combined swell energy down at a pitiful (3), there’s just nothing to work with.

The entire first week is a write-off. We see a bit of clean, offshore wind on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th, but there’s no wave to blow on. The wind state is much better than the wave state. Even by the 30th and 31st, we get some glassy or light wind conditions, but the swell energy is zero—barely a ripple out there.

Heading into the first week of August, it does try to breathe a little life. On Saturday the 1st, a small 3 ft easterly swell pops up, pushing the combined energy to a modest (43), but the wind is messy cross or cross-onshore, so it’s a choppy, blown-out mess. Even the bigger reading of (74) on Monday the 3rd is backed by poor cross-shore winds and a short 8-9 second period, making it a ropy, ugly option for kites, not a surfboard.

There’s just no window where the swell, wind and tide align. The consistent offshore breezes we get in the second week from the 6th to the 8th are wasted on a flat ocean.

So, that’s the grim picture. Courtown (Ireland) has nothing to offer for the next 16 days. No standout, no best session. Sometimes you get a blank run like this, and all you can do is wait. Forecasts change, but for now, the boards stay in the van.

Rusty.
