The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for the local stretch of coast. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. There’s a run of flat to weak, choppy conditions that just won’t let up.

We start off with some swell on Monday the 3rd of August, but don’t get excited. Kenfig Sands is seeing a tiny 2ft from the WSW with a weak 9-second period and a combined energy of only 49. The wind is a messy cross-on from the W, turning any bump into a wash. The water is a warm 68°, which is a lot warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only highlight for the next two weeks.

The next few days are more of the same. Tuesday the 4th brings a bit more size (3ft) but the period drops to a pathetic 7 seconds, and the onshore wind just ruins it. By Wednesday the 5th, we see a pulse of 5ft to 5ft, and the combined energy hits 188 to 219 (moderate energy), but it’s all under a fresh onshore blow. That’s not surf, that’s just a washing machine. For a beginner-friendly beach break like this, 5ft is already getting a bit much, and with the wind, it’s only for the hardcore or the kite surfers out there.

We then hit a long, flat lull. From Thursday the 6th right through to the morning of Sunday the 9th, the swell drops to under 3ft, and the energy is next to nothing. The wind is unreliable, mostly onshore or cross-on. It’s a dead period.

There’s a clean spell on Monday the 10th and Tuesday the 11th thanks to a strong offshore E to ESE wind at 15 to 22 mph. The problem is the swell is gone. We’re talking 0.3ft to 1ft – just not enough to push a wave. The long flat spell continues through to the morning of Thursday the 13th.

The only faint glimmer comes on the very last day of the forecast. On Tuesday the 18th of August, the morning session shows a glassy calm at the beach. The wind is 0 mph, and the water is like glass. The swell is a modest 3ft from the W with a 6-second period, but the combined energy is a moderate 52. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s the only hour in the whole 16 days that gets a score of 1. For a spot that’s not usually this bad, this is a real downer.

Look, the honest truth is there are no good options here. Kenfig Sands is a fairly consistent break, so this blank run is unusual. These things don’t usually last, and the forecasts can change quick. But for now, leave the boards in the van and go for a walk.

Rusty.
