The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough one for the Wales region.

We’re looking at Kenfig Sands (United Kingdom) for the entire outlook. The water is currently sitting at 68°, which is about 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, a real treat to feel that warm on your skin.

The problem is the surf. For the first week, the wind is just not playing ball. We’ve got a run of poor surf conditions from Monday the 3rd right through to Sunday the 9th of August. The swell is tiny, mainly under 2ft, and what little energy there is, is being torn apart by dirty onshore and cross-onshore winds. The combined energy peaks at a weak 113 (Tuesday morning) but it’s messy and short period at 7 seconds. Later in the week, we get a cleaner window on Monday the 10th of August morning with a light offshore breeze from the East, but the swell is only 1.0ft with a period of 4 seconds – just not enough to ride.

The second week is more of the same. From Tuesday the 11th right through to Monday the 17th, the swell stays below 2ft and the wind is predominantly onshore. There’s a tiny bit of hope on Sunday the 16th of August morning with a cross-shore breeze, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft. The combined energy is right down in the single digits and low teens most days, which is weak wave energy. The best looking period of the whole 16-day window is still poor, with the highest swell hitting 2ft. It’s a full-on blank run, and for an exposed beach setup like this, that’s pretty normal when the weather patterns lock in.

There are no standouts here. If you’re desperate for a paddle, maybe Monday the 10th of August morning will be the cleanest, but you’ll be bobbing around on a lake. For anything with a bit of push, you’d want to be looking at kite gear – the onshore breezes on Wednesday the 5th of August afternoon (25 mph) and the 6ft lumpy swell would be more interesting for a kite than a surfboard.

Hang in there, the forecasts can change.

Rusty.
