Alright crew, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what’s happening at Widemouth Bay. Gotta be honest, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty lean for any kind of decent paddling.
Starting off on Thursday the 2nd of July, it’s a bust. We’ve got some chest-high swell coming in at 5 ft, but a 12 mph cross-onshore wind out of the NW absolutely wrecks it. That moderate wave energy (421) doesn't mean a thing when you’re battling chop. For the rest of that first week, it’s knee-to-waist high junk with onshore winds. Not worth the walk down the beach. The water’s sitting at 63° which is *much warmer than normal* for the time of year, but it won't make the surf any better.
We actually hit a dead zone of total flatness or useless dribble from the 5th to the 8th of July. There’s almost no energy in the water, readings as low as 42, and waves barely hitting 2 ft. Even a glassy morning on the 8th with no wind gives us nothing to ride. That’s a four-day gap of absolutely nothing worth talking about.
Now, it’s not all bad news, but you have to be patient. The real standout window starts to show up on Thursday the 9th of July. The swell is puny at 2 ft, but here’s the good part: a clean 12 mph offshore wind from the East. It’s small and ordinary, but that offshore breeze will make it rideable and clean. This pattern holds through Friday the 10th, but on Friday afternoon a fresh 22 mph cross-offshore kicks in which is just too strong to enjoy.
The real interesting moment is later. Look at Monday the 13th of July. In the morning we see a tiny 1 ft wave, but check the period – 15 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell. It’s tiny and weak (76 combined energy), but that long period will make for some surprisingly shapely little peelers if you’ve got a longboard. The gentle offshore wind from the ENE keeps it clean as a whistle. That afternoon the swell bumps up to 3 ft with a 13-second period (254 energy), but it goes onshore and messy.
Actually, I’m gonna call it: Tuesday the 14th of July morning is your best bet of the whole forecast. We get 3 ft of swell from the West at a solid 11-second period. The combined energy of all swells hitting that 247 mark means there’s enough push to be fun. Most importantly, it’s glassy with a NNE breath of air at 3 mph. That’s dead calm. It’ll be small and clean, perfect for the longboard or a fun mid-length. It’s a beach and reef setup here at Widemouth Bay, so those long period groundswells can sometimes break a little straight, but at this size it should be offering up some nice lines.
After that, the second week fades back into tiny dribble with the odd offshore day keeping it clean for micro-grovel, but nothing with any real power. The 17th shows a slight bump to 4 ft, but it’s onshore and short period, just ugly windswell.
Honestly, if you don’t have a log, you might want to give the first 12 days a miss. The highlight is the morning of the 14th. It’s not a bomb, but for this stretch of mostly flat and choppy junk, it’s the only time the stars line up.
Rusty.
