The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat. Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a tough stretch for this part of the coast. We've got a long, quiet start with only tiny, weak swells and mostly cross or onshore winds. There's no real surf to get excited about for the first ten days or so. The water temp at Widemouth Bay is 66°, which is over 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a warm bath out there, but the waves just aren't playing ball.
The first real flicker of hope doesn't come until Thursday, September 3rd. Through the morning we see some chest-high swell pushing 4 ft from the west, but it's short period stuff at 7 seconds. The energy is moderate (212), but the wind is cross-off from the northeast, keeping things reasonably clean. It’s still only a marginal call. That afternoon gets a bit more interesting, with the swell lifting to 5 ft from the west and the period stretching out to 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a solid 426, and with that clean cross-off breeze, it starts to look a bit more like a proper session. The break is fairly exposed, so it'll pick up that WNW optimum, but with the period that long, it might be better on the points than the main beach.
Now, the standout window looks to be Friday morning, September 4th. The swell holds at 4 ft from the west, with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind is forecast to be glassy from the southeast. If that holds, it’ll be pure magic – clean, smooth lines with moderate energy (243). It’s not huge, but the quality will be top-notch if the wind plays ball. This is the one to aim for. The afternoon looks to get a bit lumpy as a light northwesterly cross-on breeze picks up, so get in early.
Beyond that, the second week falls away quickly. There are some clean-looking mornings with offshore winds, but the swell drops right back to ankle-to-knee high and the energy is weak. It's one of those spells where you just have to wait for the next system.
For the few sessions that are on offer, it’s a beach and reef setup, so it can handle a bit of size, but the longer period swells will definitely find the reef and the river mouth better than the main beach banks. And remember, the long period means longer waits between sets, but the waves that come through will have more push.
Keep an eye on that Friday morning window, because that's the only one that's really got my heart racing.
Rusty.
