The Lowdown
Right then, let's have a look at what's on offer around Widemouth Bay for the next couple of weeks. I'll be straight with you, it's a bit of a tough stretch for the foreseeable, so we're going to have to be patient.
The pattern shaping up is mostly small and weak, with a lot of wind from the wrong directions messing things up. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing out of the ordinary there. For the next week or so, the wave energy is pretty low, with the combined energy reading just 27 on Sunday morning and not getting much above 100 until later on. We've got some clean-looking conditions early on with a light offshore breeze, but the swell is barely a ripple at 1ft from the west.
Sunday morning is your best bet early doors, with Widemouth Bay seeing a clean 1ft from the west under clear skies and a light offshore. It's tiny, but it's the only session that's not blown out. The period is a short 9 seconds, so don't expect much push.
The outlook for the next few days is poor. We get a brief window of clean conditions on Monday and Tuesday mornings thanks to a fresh offshore wind, but the swell remains tiny and weak. The combined energy stays below 60, and the period is short. It's barely worth getting wet for.
A bit of a pulse arrives around Friday the 28th, with the combined energy climbing to 109 and then 88, but the wind turns onshore and messy. We see a 3ft from the west-southwest on Friday morning with light cross-shore wind, and then a 4ft from the west on Friday afternoon with a moderate onshore wind. It's going to be a bit of a mess.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th sees the swell size jump, with 7ft from the west on Saturday morning and 6ft on Saturday afternoon, but it's accompanied by strong onshore winds and rain. The combined energy hits 446 and 381, showing some real power, but with the wind howling straight onshore, it's going to be a washing machine. That 7ft is too big for beginners and the conditions will be tough even for experienced surfers. This period of messy, onshore swell continues through to the 31st and into early September. The period is generally short, around 7-8 seconds, so the waves will be crumbly and lacking shape.
Monday the 31st offers a slight glimmer, with a 3ft from the west-northwest and a light cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is a modest 86. The conditions are described as "surfable but very ordinary," which about sums it up.
After that, the wind stays a problem. We get a bit more size around Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September, with 5ft from the west, but it's always with a cross or cross-onshore wind. The combined energy gets up to 324 on the 4th, showing some moderate energy, but the quality just isn't there.
To be honest, there is no standout session in this entire outlook. The best on offer is probably that tiny, clean Sunday morning the 23rd if you're desperate for a paddle, or maybe the clean Monday and Tuesday mornings of the 24th and 25th, but the swell is just too small to get excited about. Later on, the 7ft weekend of the 29th has the power but is completely blown out. For kite surfers, the strong onshore winds and building swell around the 29th and 30th would be a better bet than trying to paddle into that mess.
