Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks down at Widemouth Bay.

Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you—this is a tough one. The 16-day window opens with a real flat spell. For the first week and a bit, from the morning of Sunday, July 12th, right through until the morning of Monday, July 20th, it’s just not worth paddling out. The swell is tiny, mostly 1 foot to 2 feet, and while the wind is often offshore and clean, there’s simply no energy behind it. The combined swell energy barely cracks 20 (19) to 80 in the afternoons, which is weak. You’d be bobbing around on a lake. The water temperature is sitting at 65°F – that’s about 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s notably warm, but that doesn’t help the waves.

The wait goes on. The first real hint of life arrives on Monday morning, July 20th. Swell ticks up to 3 feet from the west, with a period of 6 seconds and combined energy of 107 (moderate). The wind is a north cross-shore, so it’s a bit junky with a cross-chop. Still, it’s a step up. The afternoon stays similar, 3 feet west, but the wind backs to north-west and becomes cross-onshore and choppy, so the morning is the cleaner call. It’s still poor surf conditions though – not something I’d be rushing for.

Then comes Tuesday, July 21st. The morning serves up 5 feet from the west with a 7-second period, and combined energy jumps to 218 (moderate). Wind is north-northwest, cross-shore, with just a slight cross-chop. That’s the best-looking window so far. The afternoon pushes up to 6 feet from the west, but the wind turns north-west cross-onshore and it gets choppy again. The morning is your pick if you’re desperate.

Now, Wednesday, July 22nd, brings a proper pulse. The morning shows 8 feet from the west (8 seconds) and combined energy of 836 (strong to very strong). That’s a solid swell. But the wind is west-northwest, cross-onshore, and it’s light, so there’ll be some wind ripples on the face. The setup is a beach and reef, so an 8-foot west swell with a short period is going to be a bit of a washing machine – it’s only for experts. It’s also noted as “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions,” so be careful. The afternoon is a write-off with 8 feet from the west-northwest and a moderate cross-onshore making it choppy.

Thursday, July 23rd, drops back to 5 feet from the north-northwest (7 seconds), with combined energy of 459 (moderate). The cross-onshore wind from the north-west keeps it fairly choppy, so it’s not a standout.

After that, it fades fast. Friday, July 24th, sees 3 feet from the west, and the combined energy plummets to 78 (weak). The rest of the run into the second week and the end of the month is back to tiny, onshore junk, mostly 1 foot to 2 feet, with onshore winds and weak energy. There’s a dry spell from the 25th to the 27th with nothing doing.

The only true standout here is the morning of Wednesday, July 22nd, with that 8-foot west swell and 836 energy. It’s big, it’s raw, and it’s for experienced surfers only. The morning of Tuesday, July 21st is the next best bet for the average surfer, with 5 feet west and cleaner cross-shore winds. The rest of the 16 days is a long, flat gap or poor quality.

Hold tight, get your board ready for the 22nd if you’ve got the chops, or the 21st morning for a more manageable session. Otherwise, it’s a quiet one.

Rusty.
