Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for us at Widemouth Bay.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and uninspiring for paddle surfing. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak swell with mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds making a mess of things. This is one of those runs where you might be better off taking a break or just going for a beach walk. The water temperature is 63°F, which is 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year (much warmer than normal).
The first proper chance for anything rideable doesn’t show up until Wednesday morning, July 8th. The swell is a tiny 2ft from the west with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is weak (61). But the wind goes glassy – calm, like a mirror. That’s a major positive for clean conditions, even if the waves are small and ordinary. It’s a beginner-friendly height, so if you’re learning, that morning might be your window. The break is fairly consistent for this area, so it tends not to stay poor forever.
Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th mornings offer a bit more of the same: small 2ft to 3ft west swell with clean cross-offshore winds from the northeast. The energy is still weak to moderate (63 and 106). Crowds are often here, so expect company on those clean but tiny days.
Sunday July 12th brings a slight bump: 3ft to 4ft from the NNW with a short 6-second period. The combined energy climbs to moderate (114–152). Sunday morning has a light offshore from the ENE, keeping things clean, and by Sunday afternoon the wind goes glassy again. These are probably the best-looking conditions in the whole stretch for a surfer wanting a bit more push, but the short period means the waves won’t be punchy or well-shaped. Still, for this area, it’s a standout window.
The second week gets a little more interesting but also more uncertain. July 14th (Tuesday) has 2ft from the west with an 11-second period and moderate energy (114), with clean cross-offshore winds. This longer period groundswell could give better shape but can break a bit straight at a beach-and-reef setup like Widemouth Bay. Still, clean conditions make it worth a look.
Now, by July 17th (Friday) and into the weekend, we see a bigger spike in swell. Friday afternoon hits 2ft but with a 12-second period and energy of 247 (moderate), and by Sunday the 19th afternoon we’re looking at 6ft from the west with 8 seconds and energy of 460 (strong). Monday July 20th morning sees 7ft from the west with 9 seconds and a huge 726 energy (very strong wave energy). But here’s the catch – the winds are onshore or cross-onshore and gusty (up to 22 mph), which is going to wreck the surface. That’s kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing. The swell is also pushing into expert-only heights (over 8ft at times), especially Monday morning.
So, big picture: the best bet for a clean, manageable surf is Sunday July 12th – the glassy afternoon with 3ft NNW swell is your standout. The other clean windows are the tiny Wednesday and Thursday mornings. The bigger swell at the end of the run is too wind-affected for a good paddle session. Keep an eye on the forecasts nearer the time, but don’t get your hopes up too high.
Rusty, signing off.
