The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you: this stretch of the next 16 days is a lean one. We're looking at Widemouth Bay, a beach and reef setup, and the honest truth is the surf gods are taking a holiday. The water is a balmy 66°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a bath compared to the norm.
The pattern is grim. For the first few days, from Wednesday the 19th right through to the end of the following week, we're dealing with a combination of junky wind and low energy. The swell that does show up is weak and short-period, with the combined energy barely limping into triple digits (445 on Thursday morning) before fading out. It's a lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind, making for a lumpy, choppy mess that's not worth paddling out for.
There is a brief, tiny window on Saturday morning the 22nd. We get a clean, glassy moment with a light offshore from the ENE, but the swell is a paltry 2 ft at 10 seconds from the west. The combined energy is a weak 82. It's rideable, but only just. The crowds are often there, so you might have some company for the slop. It's a "maybe if you're desperate" situation.
After that, it's a long, bleak stretch. From Sunday the 23rd all the way through to the end of the month, the energy drops into the double and single digits. The wind is all over the place, but the swell just isn't there. We get a few days of fresh offshore wind, but with waves under 1 ft, it's unsurfable. It's a total blank run.
Into the first week of September, the energy picks back up, but the quality doesn't. We see moderate swell energy (471 on the 1st of September) with 6 ft waves from the west, but the period is short at 8 seconds, and the wind is onshore, making it a messy, blown-out wall of whitewater. That's too big for beginners and too ugly for anyone else.
Honestly, this setup is more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers, especially during that early September blow. If you absolutely have to get wet, the cleanest conditions will be on the morning of the 3rd of September, with light cross-offshore winds and a 3 ft, 10-second swell from the west-southwest. The energy is still low (146), but it's the best you're going to get in a very poor run.
Rusty.
