Alright, let me tell you what’s cookin’ at Widemouth Bay. It’s a bit of a quiet stretch ahead, so don’t go paddlin’ out just yet.
Right off the bat, I’ve gotta say, the water’s a bit weird. On Monday the 13th, it’s sitting at 66°F with a big anomaly of 5°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. Feels like a summer bath, but there’s no surf to enjoy it.
The first week is basically a write-off. From Monday the 13th through to Thursday the 24th, you’re looking at tiny, weak waves – mostly 0.3ft to 2ft – with very low combined energy (between 8 and 47). The wind is okay at times, with some clean offshore or glassy mornings, but the swell just isn’t there. It’s frustrating. There’s a glassy moment on Wednesday afternoon the 15th with 1ft, but it’s barely a ripple.
The real standout comes late in the game. On Friday the 24th, swell jumps up a bit. The morning shows 4ft from the W with a period of 6 seconds, and combined energy hits 125. By the afternoon, it’s 5ft from the W, period 7 seconds, energy 195. That’s the biggest pulse in the whole outlook. But here’s the kicker – it’s onshore wind all day, so the surface is gonna be messy. It’s only really one for the experts if you’re desperate, and even then, it’s not pretty.
Then Saturday the 25th offers a slight glimmer. Morning brings 3ft from the WNW, period 8 seconds, energy 104, and the wind is a light cross-off from the ESE. That’s clean. The afternoon goes glassy, with 2ft and energy 60. It’s small, but it’s the most user-friendly surf of the whole period. This is your best bet if you’re itching for a paddle, but don’t expect much.
The rest of the second week falls apart again. Sunday the 26th has near gale-force offshore winds (31 mph from the ESE), which is just silly. Monday the 27th brings a pulse of 4ft from the NW, but it’s onshore and lumpy. Then Tuesday the 28th is blown out by fresh cross-onshore winds and rain showers.
So, take it from me: the only real option is Saturday the 25th. It’s small, clean, and glassy in the afternoon. Everything else is either flat, blown out, or just rubbish. This is a proper south-west coast lull, and it’s gonna feel like a long wait.
Rusty.
