The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on tap for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, this is a tough run. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple for the first 11 days. The forecast is filled with “poor surf conditions” right through until the 25th of July. That’s a long stretch of flatness, so don’t be in a rush to wax up.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Saturday morning, the 25th of July. We’ve got a tiny bit of swell creeping in at Widemouth Bay, a beach and reef setup. The swell is only 2ft from the west, with a short period of 7 seconds – so it’s weak, but it’s something. The combined swell energy is a modest 65. What makes it worth a mention is the wind: it’s glassy. That’s a major positive. The water is running about 66°, which is a massive 5° warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s very unusual – you won’t need a thick wetsuit. Crowds are “often” here, so expect company. It’s not a standout by any means, but it’s the only window where you might get a clean, knee-high wave.
After that, the outlook gets a bit more interesting in the energy department, but the quality drops. On Monday the 27th of July, the swell jumps up to 6ft from the west with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 398 (moderate). However, the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the south at 15 mph, creating lumpy, cross-chop conditions. That’s not great for a clean ride. By Tuesday the 28th, it’s even bigger at 6-7ft, but the wind is fresh and onshore from the south-southwest, making it choppy and messy. The combined energy hits 550 and 529 (strong wave energy), but the quality is poor. At that size, with onshore wind, this setup is looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The best advice I can give? If you’re desperate for a paddle, that glassy Saturday morning on the 25th is your best bet. For the rest, it’s a waiting game. The energy builds, but the wind is going to ruin it. Hang tight, and remember, forecasts can change.
