Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve been staring at the charts for our stretch of coast, and it’s a tough one to call. We’ve got a 16-day window, but honestly, it’s a long haul of pretty ordinary conditions. There’s a gap right at the start with no real surf on offer, and the first chance to even get wet doesn’t really come until the morning of Wednesday, July 8th.
Let’s be straight with you. The main break we’re looking at is Widemouth Bay, a beach and reef setup that’s fairly exposed to the swell. The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so nothing weird there.
The whole forecast is a bit of a slog. The swell energy is weak, mostly sitting in the double digits (like 42 to 199) and the period is short, coming in at 8 to 10 seconds from the W and WNW. That’s windswell, folks, not groundswell. And the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things messy.
The only real glimmers of hope are on Wednesday morning, July 8th, and then again on Thursday morning, July 9th. Both mornings we get a glassy window with a light offshore breeze from the ENE. The swell is small, only 2ft from the W with a 9-second period, so it’s small and weak, but it’ll be clean. The combined energy is a weak 60, so don’t expect much push, but if you’ve got a log, it’s the best you’ll see. The rest of those days, the wind swings around and turns it into a chop-fest.
After that, it’s a long stretch of poor surf. The wind stays on it, and the swell doesn’t pick up. By the time we get to the second week, around the 13th and 14th of July, the swell energy climbs a bit into the 100+ range, but the wind is still cross-onshore, so it’s just messy. There’s a moment on the morning of Saturday, July 11th, with a 3ft swell from the NNW, but it’s a short 6-second period and the wind is cross-shore, making it bumpy. Not worth the drive.
Honestly, this is a case of waiting for the glass. The only two standout windows are those Wednesday and Thursday mornings. They’re not going to be pumping, but they’ll be your cleanest options. The rest of the 16 days, the surf is just poor. If you’re a kite surfer, the windier afternoons might be of interest, but for paddle surfing, it’s a blank run.
Keep your eyes on the forecast, things can change. For now, I’m not holding my breath.
Rusty.
