The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for the Widemouth Bay area. I’ve looked at the whole 16-day window, and I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough stretch. The surf is almost non-existent for the first week, and the few days that do show some size are plagued by onshore winds. It’s a real bummer, but that’s the way it is sometimes.
The most significant swell we see arrives on Saturday the 25th and Tuesday the 28th, with the swell height pushing over 5 feet, but the wind direction is all wrong for clean conditions. Let’s walk through it.
We start off with a long, flat spell. From Saturday the 18th right through to Friday the 24th, the swell is tiny, mostly under 2 feet, with weak wave energy (between 15 and 58). The wind is working against us too, mostly cross or cross-onshore, with a few brief moments of clean conditions but nothing to get excited about. The water temp is 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first real pulse of swell comes on Saturday the 25th. We’re looking at 6 feet from the WNW, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 270, which is a moderate wave energy. But here’s the kicker – the wind is a moderate cross-onshore at 12 mph, so it’s going to be choppy and messy. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a good paddle-surfing session. The conditions are the same for the afternoon.
Sunday the 26th drops back to 3 feet, still onshore, and the energy fades to 71. Not much better.
Tuesday the 28th morning shows another bump up to 5 feet from the WNW, with a period of 7 seconds and energy of 191. Again, the wind is onshore at 9 mph, making for ugly, bumpy waves. The afternoon drops to 3 feet with even stronger onshore wind. This is still not a goer for a clean surf.
After that, the swell fades away again right through to the end of the period on Sunday the 2nd of August, with tiny waves and weak energy. The best of the rest is probably the morning of Wednesday the 30th, when there’s a little 1 foot groundswell from the west with a 10-second period and a light offshore wind, but it’s barely enough to ride.
In short, there’s no standout day for a proper surf. The swell that shows up is too short-period and gets smacked by the wind. The long-range look at the 25th and 28th of July offers the most size, but the quality is poor. It’s a frustrating outlook, but that’s the coast for you – sometimes it stays flat and messy for a while. Keep your eyes peeled for a change in the forecast, but for now, I’d be finding something else to do.
Rusty.
