The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's goin' on down at Widemouth Bay.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple. From today, Friday the 17th, all the way through to Saturday the 26th of July, it's a grim run of tiny, weak waves. We're talking ankle-snappers at best, with heights mostly below 3ft. The wind is mostly a mess, swinging cross or cross-onshore, and the energy is pathetic – the combined energy barely cracks double digits most days, sitting at a meagre 9 (Friday morning) up to just 68 (Wednesday afternoon). The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 64°, but that's no consolation when there's nothing to ride.
There is a little glimmer on Sunday the 26th morning. We get a clean 3ft swell from the west with a light offshore breeze from the ENE. The combined energy is still only 62 though, so it's surfable but very ordinary. That's about the best of the first week.
Now, the real story is the second week. The wait is worth it. Mark your calendars for the end of the month. Things start to get interesting on Monday the 27th, but it's still choppy and messy, even with the swell picking up to 5ft.
The standout is Thursday the 30th of July. This is the one. The swell from the west-northwest builds to 13ft in the morning and holds at 10ft in the afternoon. That's a big, powerful groundswell with a period of 10 seconds, packing some serious punch – the combined energy is a massive 2602! This is expert territory, no question. It's too big for beginners. But for the experienced crew, the conditions are looking excellent. The wind swings offshore from the north-northeast, keeping the faces clean. This is a rare, high-quality window in a dry month.
The Friday the 31st also offers up a solid 7ft groundswell from the WNW, with clean offshore winds in the morning. It's a good follow-up day, but the energy drops to 487, so it's not quite the peak of Thursday.
Honestly, sit tight. The first 10 days are a bust. The 30th is the big dog.
Rusty.
