The Lowdown
Right, folks. Rusty here. Let’s be honest from the start, this 16-day stretch for Widemouth Bay is a bit of a heartbreaker. The waves just don't show up with any real grunt. We've got a long, long run of tiny, weak surf, so don't be expecting to paddle out with any high hopes for a while.
Let’s start with the first glimmer. Wednesday, July 15th, you’ll see some tiny 1ft swell from the west, with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 28, so it’s more of a splash than a wave. The water is a warm 64°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice surprise. The wind is offshore from the east at 16 mph, which will keep the surface clean. But again, it’s just too small to get excited about. That theme of clean but tiny carries through the next few days. Thursday morning, July 16th, is another 0.7ft, 8-second period swell. The afternoon gets glassy with a NNW wind, but the swell is still only 1ft. Friday, July 17th, the morning goes glassy with a 2ft NNW swell, but the period is a short 5 seconds, so it’s wonky. The energy is still weak in the 20s.
We have a few days of slightly more size, but the quality disappears. Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday, July 19th, see the swell bump to 2ft and 3ft, but it's short-period NNW windswell, and the wind is mostly cross-shore or cross-on, making it choppy and messy. The energy is still weak, topping out at 40. It’s just not surfable.
The pattern is the same through the rest of July. You get a pulse of 3ft on Monday, July 20th, with a combined energy of 53, but it’s still a short-period, cross-shore mess. The wind only really cleans up again on Tuesday morning, July 21st, with an offshore breeze, but the swell drops back to 2ft. It’s just a lot of waiting.
The second week is no better. The swell is mostly between 0.7ft and 3ft, with the same poor quality. The wind is almost always onshore or cross-shore from the north-west. The energy stays weak, usually under 60. The only real change is on the 30th of July, when the swell finally pushes up to 5ft from the west-northwest, with a combined energy of 160 (moderate). But the wind is onshore at 9-12 mph, and we’re looking at an onshore bump. The period is still a short 6 seconds, so it’s going to be a messy, lumpy close-out. Not a surfers’ wave.
So, the honest truth: there is no standout session here. The best of a bad bunch is perhaps the glassy morning of Friday, July 17th, with that 2ft swell, but it’s barely a wave. For the whole 16 days, it’s a proper flat spell. Given the beach and reef setup at Widemouth Bay, with the wind and small, messy swell, this set-up looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, if they’re after a bit of chop.
Keep the board in the car, but don't take the wetsuit off just yet. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
