The Lowdown

Alright, let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are shaping up like for Widemouth Bay.

Honestly, mate, it’s a bit of a tough stretch. The overall pattern is gonna be pretty lean, and there are long gaps with hardly anything to get excited about. The combined swell energy is weak to moderate at best, topping out in the low hundreds (492) only on the 20th, but even that comes with messy, cross-onshore wind. The water is sitting at 66°, which feels noticeably warmer than usual for this time of year—a solid 4° above average, so that’s a bit of a treat if you’re just having a dip.

The first real chance to get a surf in comes around Saturday morning, 22nd August. A tiny 2ft of west swell, period a touch short at 10 seconds, but the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NE. That’ll clean things up a bit, and the energy is low (71) so it’s strictly a longboard or foamie session. The break here is a beach and reef affair, and it’s fairly consistent, so you might find a few crumbly ones. Crowds are often a thing here, so expect company.

Sunday morning the 23rd looks glassy—offshore from the ENE and barely a breath of wind—but the swell is tiny at 1.0ft from the west with a very long period of 14 seconds. The combined energy is next to nothing (24), so this is more of a paddle than a surf. That long period will make it bend around the points, but there’s just not enough height to ride.

There’s a complete drought from the 24th right through to the 26th, with nothing but tiny, poor surf and awful wind. A few days with fresh offshore breezes on the 24th and 25th, but the swell is just a pathetic 0.7ft. You’re better off staying on the beach.

The next little window might be Thursday morning, 27th August. The wind goes glassy again from the NNE, with 3ft of west swell and a period of 9 seconds. The energy is moderate (106), so there’s a bit of push, but the surf report calls it “very ordinary conditions.” It’s still pretty small and inconsistent, but if you’re desperate, that’s your best go-to.

After that, it gets nasty. A couple of bigger pulses come through on the 29th with 7ft and 6ft of short-period west swell, but the wind is cross-on or onshore, and those waves will be choppy and blown out. The combined energy gets up there into the moderate range (551 and 387), but it’s not going to be any fun to paddle into. If you’re a kite surfer, that Saturday morning 29th might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a no-go.

The rest of the run into the first week of September is a write-off. The swell drops to ankle-snappers, the wind stays messy, and there’s just no quality. I’d say this is a classic blank run for the area—sometimes it just stays poor for a while, but forecasts can change.

The only true standout, if you can call it that, is Saturday morning 22nd August at Widemouth Bay. It’s not big, but the conditions will be the cleanest of the whole forecast.
