The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this stretch is a tough one for surfers. We’ve got a 16-day window ahead, and honestly, it’s looking like a whole lot of flat, small, and messy conditions. The data shows nothing worth paddling out for until the very tail end, and even then, it’s not much to write home about. There’s a real gap here: from now through most of the period, you’re looking at waist-high or smaller dribble, if that. The only faint glimmer of life shows up around the 24th and 25th of July, but it’s paired with strong onshore winds that’ll tear it up.
Let’s focus on Widemouth Bay (beach and reef). For the first week and a half, it’s dead. Swell heights barely touch 2 ft, with periods under 10 seconds, and the combined swell energy is weak—mostly in the teens and twenties, showing just how little power is in the water. The water temperature is sitting at a very unusual 66°F, which is a full 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a big anomaly, and it’s a sign of how off the charts things are.
The highlights? There isn’t a single standout. The best we get is the morning of Wednesday, 22nd July, when the wind goes glassy from the NE at 3 mph, and there’s a tiny 2 ft swell from the west with a 9-second period and combined energy of 48. It’s clean, but honestly, it’s barely surfable—more of a longboard or SUP session for a beginner. After that, the 24th and 25th of July see a bump in swell to 3 ft from the west, with periods around 7 seconds and combined energy climbing into the low hundreds (105 to 140). But the wind is onshore or cross-onshore from the WSW at 15-19 mph, making it choppy and lumpy. For a beach-and-reef setup like this, that’s a recipe for closeouts and blown-out waves. It’s more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers.
Bottom line: save your energy. The forecast is grim, and even the best bits are likely to be disappointing. This is one of those periods where the surf just doesn’t show up. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d stay home and wax the board for another day.
Rusty.
