The Lowdown
Right then, let’s take a look at what’s shaping up here. I’m Rusty, and I’ve got the full 16-day picture for Widemouth Bay in front of me. Straight up, I’ve gotta be honest with you – this is a quiet stretch. There’s a whole lot of nothing happening for the first couple of weeks, and the few pulses of energy that do show up are all getting tagged as "poor surf conditions." There’s a gap from the start of the forecast period right through until the very end of July before we see anything worth paddling out for.
The first real hint of life doesn’t come until the 29th of July, Wednesday afternoon, when the swell bumps up to 4ft from the W with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is a moderate 138, so there’s a bit of push, but it’s coming in with a cross-onshore breeze from the WNW at 9 mph, which will keep it a bit lumpy and choppy. Not a standout, but at least it’s something.
The best on offer, and the only true standout in this whole window, is the 30th of July. Thursday morning we’ve got a 3ft swell from the WNW with a long period of 11 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, bringing better shape and more energy between sets. The combined energy jumps to 274, which is the most we’ll see. The jury’s out on the wind though – it’s a moderate cross-onshore from the SW at 12 mph, which will chop it up a bit. By Thursday afternoon, the swell pushes to 4ft from the W, still with that 11-second period, and the energy is 319. But the wind picks up to a fresh 19 mph from the SW, making it lumpy and less appealing. That Thursday morning window is your best bet, but it’s far from perfect.
Into the 31st of July, Friday morning, we’ve got a 4ft W swell with a 10-second period, energy at 234, but again a moderate cross-onshore wind. The afternoon turns messy with a strong breeze and rain.
The water temperature is sitting at 64°F with an anomaly of 4°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice surprise if you’re wearing a thin suit.
For this stretch, if you’re not fussed about clean walls, the 30th of July morning is your only real chance. The rest of the 16 days are a write-off for decent surf. The beach-and-reef setup here can handle a south-westerly swell, but the winds just never line up nicely. Honestly, with the wind and the chop, this looks more interesting for a kite session than a paddle session on most days.
It’s a quiet run, but forecasts can change. Keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
