The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim stretch for Widemouth Bay. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent surf. There’s just nothing to get excited about. The first few days are flat with tiny dribbles, and the wind is all over the place – mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, which is going to leave it messy and bumpy. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s not a cold one, but that’s about the only positive.
The whole first week, from the 15th through to the 21st, is a total bust. Tiny waves, poor conditions, and the energy readings are pathetic, mostly between 10 and 37 (weak energy). You’d be kidding yourself to even paddle out. The 22nd and 23rd are no better, still tiny and lumpy. The 24th to the 27th stays small, with the wind remaining a problem. A bit of a pulse shows up on the 28th, with the swell height picking up to 5ft and the energy hitting 226 (moderate), but it’s cross-onshore and choppy – still not a goer. The 29th morning is the closest thing to a mention, with 6ft swell from the west, a 9-second period, and a decent energy reading of 487 (strong wave energy). The wind is light and cross-shore, so it’ll be clean with small ripples, but the wave comment says it’s marginal at best, and the afternoon turns choppy again. The 30th fades back into small, messy junk.
Given the setup is a beach and reef, with all this wind and messy swell, honestly, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of the period. It’s a long blank run, and for this area, that’s not unusual. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to recommend.
