The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what we've got on the cards for Widemouth Bay.
Honestly, mate, I'm looking at this 16-day run and it's a bit of a tough watch. We're starting off with barely a ripple and it stays that way for a while. The first surf I can even talk about is a tiny pulse on Sunday the 23rd, but with a combined swell energy of just 27, it's hardly worth getting wet for. The water is sitting at a very unusual 66°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that's a weird one.
For the first week, from Sunday the 23rd right through to Friday the 28th, the swell is tiny, mostly between 0.7ft and 2ft. The energy is weak, barely cracking 59 at its best. The winds are mostly offshore or cross-offshore through the mornings, which would make for clean conditions if there was any power, but there just isn't. It's a frustrating stretch of poor surf.
Then we get a spike on Saturday the 29th. A 8ft swell from the WNW shows up, with a combined energy of 661. That's a lot of power. But the problem is it's all onshore wind. A fresh breeze straight from the west is going to turn it into a messy, blown-out wall. With that size and those winds, this is really only one for the experts, and even then, it's going to be a battle. Sunday the 30th drops back to 3ft and weakens, before another pulse of 6ft to 7ft from the NW rolls in on Monday the 31st. That has moderate energy (239-385), but again, it's paired with onshore and cross-onshore winds from the west and northwest, making it choppy. Not ideal.
As we head into the second week, the surf is small and messy. There's a morning on the 1st of September with a 4ft swell and 198 energy, but it's onshore. Then the 6th of September shows a glimmer: a 5ft swell from the west with a clean, cross-offshore wind from the SSE. The energy is 209. That's the best-looking window for a clean-ish wave, but it's a long way out, so treat that promise with caution. The rest of that week is back to small, weak, and onshore or choppy.
So, what's the standout? Honestly, there isn't a classic, perfect day in this run. If I had to pick one, I'd say keep an eye on Sunday the 6th of September. That 5ft west swell with cross-offshore winds could be the cleanest option we see, but it's the second week out, so it's far from a sure thing. The rest of the time, it's a waiting game. It's a flat spell, but it won't last forever.
Rusty.
