The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, taking a look at what’s cooking for Widemouth Bay over the next couple of weeks in feet and miles per hour.
Honestly, the start is a flat-out bust. Nothing with any push for days. The first whiff of something half-decent comes Saturday the 22nd of August. That morning you’ll see ankle-biters around 2 to 2 feet from the west, 10-second period, combined energy only 69. The wind is light offshore from the east at 6 mph, so it’s glassy. Tiny, but clean if you’ve got a log. It fades fast that afternoon.
From the 23rd through the 27th, it’s mostly flat to knee-high. Energy readings down in the teens or barely breaking 100. You might see some clean surfaces, but there’s no swell to ride.
The real action, if you can call it that, starts Saturday the 29th of August. Morning brings 6 to 7 feet of west swell, short 7-second period, combined energy 427. Cross-shore wind makes it choppy. That afternoon it jumps to 10 feet from the west, 10-second period, energy hitting 1522. That’s a big, powerful swell, but the wind is onshore from the WSW at 19 mph. It’s a messy, chunky beast – only for experts who like a beating.
Sunday the 30th morning is still big, around 10 feet, combined energy 1416. Wind is lighter, cross-onshore at 9 mph, so it’s slightly cleaner but still bumpy. Afternoon goes back to lumpy with 8 feet and onshore wind.
Into the first week of September, the swell stays in the 4 to 7 foot range but the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore most of the time. The best chance to score something clean looks like Friday the 4th of September morning. That’s 6 to 7 feet from the west, 8-second period, combined energy 503, and for once the wind is offshore from the NNE at 12 mph – clean faces. Still, the forecast calls it marginal.
Overall, this stretch is a struggle. Big swell hits but it’s always blown out. Small windows of clean conditions but no size. The 29th and 30th are for big-wave chargers ready to wrestle with chop. Otherwise, keep the board on the roof and hope the wind shifts.
Rusty.
