Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s rolling in.
To be straight with you, the next sixteen days are a bit of a struggle. We’ve got a long dry spell kicking off – nothing really worth paddling out for right through Saturday the 5th, Sunday the 6th, and all the way up to Tuesday morning the 8th. That’s a solid few days of flat or junky conditions, so don’t bother checking the forecast until Wednesday the 9th. Even then, it’s not exactly a classic.
The first real glimpse of anything surfable comes Wednesday the 8th at Sandy Mouth. We’re looking at a tiny 2 ft swell from the west, with a period of 9 seconds – that’s a weak little groundswell, and the combined energy is only 60 (moderate wave energy). The morning’s the only call worth making: glassy conditions with a light 3 mph breeze from the northeast. The wind’s off the land, and it’ll be clean. The swell’s too small to get excited about, but if you’re desperate, you could catch a few knee-high burgers. It’s consistent here, and the break’s exposed to the west, which is the optimum direction, so the little bumps will show.
Thursday the 9th repeats the same story: 2 ft west swell, 9-second period, and combined energy of 60 again. Another glassy morning with a 3 mph east-northeast wind. Still surfable but very ordinary. Friday the 10th picks up a bit of wind – a fresh 22 mph easterly offshore will clean it right up, but the swell’s still tiny at 2 ft from the west. That offshore breeze will make for some glassy, groomed faces, but you’re still only looking at knee-high at best. Crowds can be around here sometimes, so if you go midweek, you might have a few mates to share it with.
Come Saturday the 11th, the swell direction swings to the northwest with a short, crummy 6-second period. Combined energy jumps to 101 (moderate wave energy), and the height edges up to 3 ft. But that short period means weak, choppy lumps, and a cross-shore breeze doesn’t help. Sunday the 12th through to the end of the run is all onshore or cross-onshore wind, with swell staying small – under 3 ft – and that’s game over for any proper ride.
Honestly, if you’re a kiter, the stronger onshore days later on might offer something, but for paddle surfing, this is a long, flat patch. The only standout is Sandy Mouth on Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th mornings – tiny, clean, and glassy. It’s not a bomb, but it’s the best we’ve got. The water temp’s about average for this time of year, so no need to stress about a wetsuit.
Rusty.
