Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Sandy Mouth. I’ve got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. The water’s sitting at 66°F right now, which is a good 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a real oddity, but it won’t make up for the lack of surf.

The first week is basically a write-off. From Monday the 13th through to the end of that week, the swell is tiny, mostly around 0.3ft to 1.0ft, and the energy is weak (as low as 12 to 40). The wind is often offshore or clean, but there’s just nothing to ride. You’d be floating around for nothing. There’s a run of clear days but the ocean is flat.

Heading into the second week, things get a bit more interesting, but it’s still not great. Saturday the 24th of July sees a bump in swell, with 4ft to 5ft on offer and moderate energy (125 to 195), but it’s onshore wind from the west, so it’ll be a messy, blown-out mess. That’s not for paddling; that’s a kite session if you’re into that.

The only real standout, and I mean the only one worth waking up for, is the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (104). The wind is light offshore from the ESE, so it’ll be clean. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. The break is consistent and exposed to the west, and the optimum swell is from the west, so that WNW direction is a bit off, but it’s the best we’ve got. Crowds are possible here, so you might get a few out. After that, it’s back to junk with strong offshore winds on Sunday the 26th that will make paddling out a battle.

So, to sum it up: the 16-day window is a long, flat slog with one tiny window of clean, small surf on the 25th. If you’re desperate, that’s your moment. Otherwise, keep the board in the car.
