The Lowdown

Alright, I’m lookin’ at the charts for Sandy Mouth, and I gotta be straight with you—it’s a tough stretch ahead. The next week and a half is pretty grim, with strong onshore winds and lumpy, messy conditions dominating the picture. We’ve got a long gap of poor surf before things start to get slightly interesting right at the tail end of the month.

The water temp at Sandy Mouth is sittin’ at 66°, which is a solid 4° above what’s normal for this time of year. That’s notably warmer than usual, so you might not need the thickest wetsuit if you’re brave enough to paddle out in the slop.

Monday the 17th kicks off with a weak 3 ft swell from the WNW, period a short 6 seconds, and a cross-on NNW breeze. Combined energy is a paltry 67—weak stuff. Poor surf all day. That sets the tone. Tuesday the 18th is a bit bigger, 4 ft in the morning from the WNW, but still hammered by onshore wind. Wednesday the 19th pushes to 5 ft with 30 km/h onshore winds—ugly, choppy, and blown out. We’re lookin’ at a whole week of this, with moderate to strong winds and onshore slop.

Friday the 21st morning offers a brief glimmer: a clean 2 ft swell from the west, light NE cross-off breeze, but it’s tiny and the energy is only 72. It’s surfable but very ordinary. Not worth getting excited about.

Then we hit another quiet patch. From Saturday the 22nd through Tuesday the 27th, the swell drops to knee-high or below. The winds are mostly cross-off or light, but there’s just no power. Combined energy dips into the single digits some mornings. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.

Now, here’s the only standout in the whole 16-day window—and it’s a long-range one, so keep that in mind. On Friday the 28th of August, a swell rolls in that actually has some life. The morning shows 6 ft from the west with a period of 10 seconds, and combined energy jumps to 635—that’s strong wave energy. The wind is light from the west, 5 km/h, almost glassy. This is the best we’ll see. The afternoon stays similar at 6 ft and 631 energy, though the wind picks up a little onshore. The only catch? The swell direction is west, which matches the optimum for Sandy Mouth, but the period is moderate, not super long. Still, it’s the most promising session on the board. For experienced surfers, this could be a fun day if the tide lines up.

After that, Sunday the 30th brings a 7 ft west swell in the afternoon, period 8 seconds, but with onshore winds and combined energy of 626—still strong, but the wind will likely mess it up. Monday the 31st has a 6 ft west swell with 10-second period but strong onshore winds and risk of thunderstorms. Not ideal.

Bottom line: if you’re itchin’ for a wave, pencil in Friday the 28th morning as your best shot. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or both. Hang tight, and keep an eye on the charts—it’s been rough, but that late August pulse might just deliver.

Rusty.
