Table - best surf conditions forecast for Sandy Mouth over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's just get this straight from the jump – the next couple of weeks at Sandy Mouth are a proper struggle. We are looking at a long, dry spell of flat, weak surf before anything remotely worth paddling out for shows up.
Right now, through to the end of next week, we've got tiny dribbles. Swell heights are hanging around 0.3ft to 1ft with periods as low as 5 seconds. That's not surf, that's a lake. The combined wave energy is barely registering, sitting at a paltry 19 early on Sunday morning. Even though the wind is offshore from the East at 19 mph on Sunday morning, turning clean Sunday arvo, there's just no power in the water to work with. The water temp is a balmy 65°F, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, but that's about the only highlight.
This flat spell drags on. Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th are still tiny, 0.3ft to 1.0ft, with clean conditions but no push. Wednesday and Thursday the 15th and 16th are the same story – tiny, weak swell. We finally get a glassy morning on Thursday the 16th with zero wind, but the swell is still a pathetic 1.0ft. Honestly, it's rough.
We finally see a pulse of energy arriving on Monday the 21st of July. The swell bumps to 5ft from the West, but the period is a short 7 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 218, so there's some push, but the morning is cross-shore from the NNW at 9 mph, making it a bit messy. Tuesday morning the 22nd sees the biggest swell of the whole outlook: 8ft from the West with an 8 second period. That's proper size, over 8ft, so this is expert territory only. The wave energy is massive, hitting 836 and then 1081 in the arvo. But the problem is the wind – it's either cross-onshore or onshore from the WNW, so it's going to be a bumpy, blown-out mess. The setup at Sandy Mouth is exposed to the swell, and with that much wind and size on a beach, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, if I'm being honest.
There’s a brief appearance of 3ft to 3ft swell on Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th, but it’s quickly fading and the wind stays messy, cross-onshore or onshore. After that, we sink back into the tiny stuff for the final days.
There is no standout session here. The closest thing to a wave is that big 8ft pulse on Wednesday the 22nd, but the wind is going to ruin it, and the short period will make it walled up. If you’re a die-hard expert wanting to get hammered in bumpy, overhead slop, that’s your window. For everyone else, save the energy.
Rusty, signing off.
