The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin' at Sandy Mouth.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a challenge. We’ve got a long, dry spell ahead with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until Sunday the 26th of July, and even then it’s only just scraping a 1 out of 10. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the west, with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 62. The wind is offshore from the east-northeast at 6 mph, which will leave the surface clean, but there’s just not enough grunt in the water to get excited about. The water temperature is 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The outlook stays pretty grim through the end of the month. By Monday the 27th, the swell ticks up to 5 ft from the west, but it’s got a strong cross-onshore wind from the southwest at 12 mph, making a mess of things. The combined energy climbs to 163 (moderate) but the quality is poor.
Things get bigger, but not better, from the 29th. On the morning of Wednesday the 29th, we’re looking at a 6 ft west swell with 7-second period, energy reading 307 (moderate), but the wind is cross-onshore from the north-northwest at 9 mph. The afternoon jumps to a massive 12 ft from the west at 9 seconds, with energy skyrocketing to 1930 (strong). That’s way too big for this spot, and it’s blown out with a moderate cross-onshore breeze. The same goes for Thursday the 30th – a 13 ft west-northwest swell (10-second period, energy 2602) is massive and only for the experts, even with a clean, cross-off wind from the northeast at 9 mph. The waves are too big for Sandy Mouth, so it’s a no-go.
The only halfway decent window comes on Friday the 31st of July. The morning has a 7 ft west-northwest swell with 8-second period and energy of 487 (moderate). The wind is cross-off from the east-northeast at 9 mph, keeping it clean. The forecast calls for “good surf conditions,” but at 7 ft, it’s getting into the bigger range, so it’s not for the faint of heart. The afternoon drops to 7 ft with a 7-second period and energy of 405, still clean but with a cross-off breeze. It’s the best of a bad lot, but still only just a 2 out of 10.
After that, it fades back to nothing. Saturday the 1st of August is back to small, weak swell and onshore wind. A blank run like this is pretty normal for this area when the patterns don’t line up. Don’t hold your breath, but forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
