The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Well, I’ll be honest with you, it’s a pretty flat run ahead for Sandy Mouth. The entire 16-day window is a tough one. We’ve got a solid stretch of tiny, weak surf with hardly any real energy behind it. For the first week and a half, you’re looking at waves mostly under 3ft, and the combined energy readings are consistently low, often in the double digits – that’s barely a bump on the surface. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s something.
The first recommendation comes on Sunday, July 19th, but it’s a real struggle. Morning sees a tiny 2ft NNW swell, period of 5 seconds, with a light SSE cross-offshore wind. The wave energy is a weak 18. It’s clean, but there’s just no push. The afternoon glass off with 1ft and zero wind is pretty, but it’s not going to get you into anything.
Monday the 20th is more of the same. Early morning glass with 1ft from the NNW, but it’s just too small. The afternoon turns into a cross-shore mess with a 12 mph NNW wind.
Tuesday the 21st is a write-off. Tiny 1.0ft west swell, long period of 10 seconds, but the energy is only 32 and the wind is on it. Not worth a second look.
We roll through the rest of the week and into the next with waves that rarely break 3ft. The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and messy. The combined energy barely cracks 50 on the best days.
Finally, we get a little bump on Sunday, July 26th. The morning shows a 4ft WNW swell, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 152 – that’s moderate energy. But the wind is onshore from the WNW at 9 mph, so it’s blown out. The afternoon is similar, 4ft with 119 energy, but still onshore. This is the biggest swell of the whole run, but the poor surf conditions and the onshore wind make it a no-go for a clean ride. It’s the best on offer, but don’t get your hopes up.
The end of the month and into August is a dull grind. Small waves, 2ft to 3ft, with weak energy and constant cross-onshore wind. Nothing stands out.
There is a glimmer on Monday, August 3rd. The morning shows a 2ft west swell with a period of 10 seconds, but the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNE. The combined energy is 56. It’s tiny, but the clean conditions might make it a fun little longboard session if you’re really desperate. That’s about as good as it gets.
Look, it’s a tough stretch. The surf is poor, the energy is low, and the wind is rarely your friend. For a spot that’s exposed to the west, it’s just not lining up. This kind of flat run is more normal for the area, but forecasts can change. Keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
