Table - best surf conditions forecast for Sandy Mouth over the next 16 days.
Alright, let me have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Sandy Mouth.
First up, this spot is exposed to the west, so it needs a west swell to work. The water is sitting at 64°F right now, which is 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a pretty notable jump, feels like summer’s come early.
To be honest, the next week and a half is looking grim. There’s barely anything to get excited about. The first Saturday morning, July 11th, has some tiny 2ft west swell rolling in with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak (54). The wind is blowing offshore from the east-northeast at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean, but the swell is just too small and weak to bother with. It’s a surfable wave but very ordinary. After that, it goes right downhill. The next several days through to mid-week the following week are a write-off – tiny scraps of swell, poor conditions, and often strong offshore winds that will make it hard to even get into the knee-high slop. There’s a long stretch from the afternoon of the 11th right through to late on the 21st of July where there’s basically no recommendation for a decent wave. That’s over a week of nothing.
Things finally start to change on Tuesday the 21st of July. A fresh westerly swell starts to build, but the wind is a mess – strong cross-onshore from the southwest at 22 mph, with rain showers. The wave energy picks up to moderate (152), and the swell hits 4ft, but with that onshore wind, it’s going to be lumpy and ugly. Not a day for a paddle. At this point, with that much wind and swell, the setup at Sandy Mouth might look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
By the morning of Thursday the 23rd of July, the swell gets a bit more serious. We’re looking at 5ft of swell from the west-northwest, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to strong (363). But again, the wind is onshore from the west at 12 mph, so the surface is going to be chopped up. It’s a poor outlook. The waves are there, but the quality isn’t.
The standout on offer, if you can call it that, is the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. The swell gets chunky at 8ft from the west-northwest, with a long period of 9 seconds. The energy is massive – very strong at 1033. This is proper groundswell. However, it’s for experts only. The wind is onshore from the west at 16 mph, so it will be a bumpy, powerful mess. It’s a big, challenging day. The period is long enough that at a beach break like Sandy Mouth, it might be closing out, but there will be plenty of power.
If you’re after the cleanest option, it’s going to be that first Saturday morning on the 11th – tiny, clean, but not worth a paddle. For size, the 25th has the biggest waves, but the wind kills it. There’s no real gold here. Stick to the lakes for a while.
