Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at Sandy Mouth.
To be straight up with you, the next two weeks are a pretty tough stretch for waves here. There's a gap of nearly two weeks from the start of the forecast period before we see anything worth getting excited about, and even then, it’s not a classic. The first *real* chance of something rideable doesn’t roll in until Monday the 21st of July. Up until then, it’s mostly tiny, weak, or blown-out conditions, not worth wetting a wetsuit for.
The best option on offer, and really the only standout, is on the morning of Monday the 21st of July. We see a solid little spike of energy—combined swell energy hits moderate at 253—pushing in from the northwest. The swell size jumps to 6ft with a short period of 7 seconds. That’s a bit of a lumpy, wind-affected westerly swell, but the wind is a gentle cross-shore from the north. That’s going to keep it clean enough to have a crack. It won’t be perfect, but it’s the biggest and most energetic surf in the entire outlook, and the light wind will make it surfable. For the morning session, it’s your best bet.
For the rest of the run, it’s a lean period. From Monday the 6th all the way through to Sunday the 20th, the waves just don’t have any size or grunt, and when there’s a bit of shape, the wind is often messy. You get a few glassy mornings on Wednesday the 8th and again on Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, but the swell is so small—around 1ft to 2ft—it’s barely enough to push a log along.
That morning of the 21st is the real call. The water temperature at the start of the period was noted at 63°F with a 3°F anomaly, so a touch warmer than normal for the time of year at Sandy Mouth. Come the 21st, the energy is there, the wind is okay, and it’s the only day worth planning for.
Rusty.
