The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. I’ve had a proper look at the charts for Sandy Mouth, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this is a tough stretch of days ahead. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for getting a decent wave. There’s a lot of poor surf conditions flagged, and the recommendations are all zeroes. The only real bright spot is a tiny, clean window on Saturday morning, but even that’s a real small-time affair.
The first bit of hope comes Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. We’ve got a tiny 1ft west swell pushing in with a short period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is weak (53). The wind is a light cross-off from the northeast at 9 mph, and that’s keeping things clean. The water is a notable 66°, which is 4° warmer than usual for this time of year at Sandy Mouth. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. You’d be on a longboard or a foamie, squeezing out a few little runners. That’s it for the standouts, honestly. The rest of the 16 days is a tale of either no swell, onshore wind, or messy conditions.
After Saturday, we hit a long gap. The next few days are dominated by onshore or cross-shore winds, and the swell stays tiny or grows a bit but with terrible wind. By the 27th of August, Thursday morning, the swell picks up to 3ft from the southwest with a period of 8 seconds and moderate energy (138), but it’s cross-shore with light rain. Not good. Friday the 28th sees a bigger 5ft to 7ft west swell, but it’s cross-on with rain and wind up to 22 mph – that’s just messy and lumpy. That jumps up to 481 combined energy, but it’s not surfable.
The swell gets bigger again at the start of September, with the 3rd of September seeing a 5ft to 6ft west-southwest swell with period of 8 seconds and solid energy (308 to 459). But again, it’s cross-on wind and choppy. Not a paddleable wave. The 5th of September, Saturday morning, has a 5ft west swell with a longer period of 11 seconds, giving a strong 584 combined energy, but it’s cross-shore and messy. There’s just no clean window with the right wind.
Look, if you’re a kiter, some of those days with bigger swell and strong cross-onshore wind might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer, I’d be giving this a miss. The run is long and blank. It’s a tough one, but sometimes the ocean just says no.
Rusty.
