The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next two weeks at Sandy Mouth are shaping up to be a real test of patience. The surf is small, weak, and the conditions are messy for the most part. We’ve got a long stretch of barely anything to get excited about, so don’t be in a rush.
The first solid week, from the 14th of July right through to the 24th, is a total write-off. We’re looking at tiny waves, mostly around 1ft, with very weak combined swell energy (mostly in the teens to low 30s). The wind is often cross-off or offshore, which keeps the surface clean, but there’s just no power behind it. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is a massive 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s really unusual, feels like summer has come early, but it doesn’t make up for the lack of waves.
The only glimmer we get comes right at the end of the period. On Saturday the 25th of July, the morning shows a tiny bit of life. Swell bumps up to 2ft from the west, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 65 – still weak, but it’s the first time we see a “surfable” note. The wind is light and variable, keeping it clean. That’s your best bet, but it’s not a standout by any stretch. It’s a small, weak wave, and it’s inconsistent.
Then, on the 27th and 28th of July, the swell finally shows up big. We’re talking 6ft from the west with a period of 8-9 seconds, and the energy jumps to 398-550 (moderate). That’s a proper size, but here’s the kicker – the wind is cross-shore or cross-on, blowing at 15-19 mph, making it lumpy and choppy. The wave comment says “poor surf conditions” for these days. At that size, with that wind, it’s going to be a messy, bumpy beast. Honestly, for a beach break like Sandy Mouth with that onshore wind, it’s looking more like a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session. This is only for experienced surfers, and even then, it won’t be pretty.
So, the bottom line: there’s no real standout session here. The 25th morning is the tidiest, smallest option. The end of the month has the size but the wind ruins it. It’s a tough outlook.
Rusty.
