The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down Sandy Mouth. It’s a rough stretch coming up, with very little to get the heart pumping.

First thing you’ll notice is the water is way warmer than it should be for August, sitting at 66°F, which is 4°F above normal. That’s a bit of a head-scratcher.

The forecast starts flat and poor. Friday, August 21st, has a tiny 3ft west swell with a short 9-second period and a moderate cross-breeze. The wave energy is weak (133). It’s a no-go. Saturday, the 22nd, isn’t much better. The morning has a 2ft west swell with a cleaner cross-offshore wind, but the energy is weak (71) and it’s just too small.

Sunday, the 23rd, is glassy but flat, with a 1.0ft west swell (22 energy). The entire first week is a write-off. Even with fresh offshore winds on Monday, the 24th, the swell is barely a ripple at 0.3ft to 0.7ft. The energy is a whisper (18 and 12).

We get a tiny pulse on Wednesday, the 26th, with a 3ft west-southwest swell, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore and the surf is poor. Thursday morning, the 27th, has glassy conditions on a 3ft west swell (95 energy), but it’s still ordinary. That’s the best of a bad lot for the first week.

The following week, around Friday, August 28th, the swell jumps to 6ft from the west, but with a short 7-second period and strong onshore wind. The energy is moderate (282 to 306), but it’s a lumpy, blown-out mess.

The one true standout and the only time you should be looking at the water closely is on Wednesday, September 2nd. The forecast shows a solid 8ft to 10ft west swell with a 9 to 10-second period. The morning brings a fresh offshore easterly wind, so it’ll be clean. The combined energy is strong (1020 in the morning, 1700 in the afternoon). That’s a big, powerful swell, but it’s predicted to be too big for this break. The afternoon conditions are off the charts for wind and tide, but the size means it’s for experts only. The rest of that week, from September 3rd to the 5th, drops back to 5ft to 6ft with messy cross and cross-on winds, so that one day is the only real highlight.

So, for the whole 16 days, the only thing that looks like a proper session is that Wednesday, September 2nd. It’s a long way out, so don’t lock it in just yet, but it’s the one to watch. The rest of it is a tough slog.

Rusty.
