The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here with the long-range look. We've got a weird couple of weeks ahead at Sandy Mouth. To start, the water is feeling balmy at 68°F, which is well above where it should be for this time of year. But the surf, well, it’s a mixed bag.
The first few days are just messy. Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are blown out with cross-shore winds and lumpy, weak swell. Not worth suiting up.
Then we hit a real dry spell. From Saturday the 22nd, the surf just drops off a cliff. We're talking 2-foot dribble, maybe 2-foot at best. It stays like that, small and unrideable, all the way through Wednesday the 27th. That’s a solid six-day flat spell, so don't even bother checking the cam.
The ocean wakes up on Thursday the 28th, but it’s angry. A stormy swell fills in, and onshore winds turn the place into a chop-fest. Friday the 29th gets worse, with the swell pushing up to 7 feet, but it's raw and blown out. This is not surfable, it's just a mess.
The big one hits on Saturday the 30th. We're looking at a powerful 10-foot swell from the west, with a lot of energy behind it. The morning shows a brief window with lighter winds, but 10 feet is just too much juice for this break. It’s a washing machine, and it's only for the most experienced locals who really know the sandbar. The swell direction is right, but the size is overwhelming.
After that big pulse, it settles down again. The 31st and the 1st are clean-ish but small and stormy, with poor quality surf. There’s another lump of swell early on the 2nd, but it’s onshore and choppy.
The only thing that looks like a real possibility is the final day of the forecast, Friday the 4th of September. The wind finally turns offshore, giving us some clean conditions, and there’s a solid 6-7 foot of swell to work with. It’s not the biggest or the longest period swell, but after all the blown-out junk, it's the only window where you might actually get a decent wave.
So, my call is: wait out the flat spell, steer clear of that massive swell on the 30th, and save your energy for the 4th of September. That’s the one to watch. Rusty, out.
