The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and let’s talk surf. It’s Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days at Sandy Mouth (Sandy-Mouth) are looking pretty grim. To be honest, there’s no real stand-out window to get your hopes up for. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat, weak, or messy conditions.
Right from the start, Saturday morning the 18th, the water is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive. The swell is tiny at 2ft from the NNW with a period of just 4 seconds, and the combined energy is a pathetic 15 – that’s weak enough to barely tickle the inside. Sunday morning the 19th cleans up with some offshore wind from the east, but again, it’s only 2ft of short-period junk.
The whole of the first week looks like a write-off. The swell stays under 3ft, the periods are short (mostly 4 or 5 seconds), and the wind is constantly cross or cross-onshore, chopping up what little bump there is. There are a few glassy moments – like Thursday morning the 23rd and the very end of the window on Sunday morning the 2nd of August – but with combined energy readings in the teens and twenties, there’s simply no push in the water to make it worthwhile.
The only time we see any size is on Saturday the 25th of July. The morning brings a 6ft swell from the WNW with a 7-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 270 (moderate). But the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, making it choppy, and the quality is still marked as poor. Even so, 6ft with a cross-onshore wind at a beach break isn’t a recipe for clean paddle surfing – more likely a day for the kite crew to have a look.
We then hit another flat spell until Tuesday the 28th of July, where a 5ft WNW swell pushes through with a 7-second period and hits a combined energy of 191. But the wind is onshore, so again, it’s messy.
There’s a tiny glimmer late in the period, from the 31st of July into the 1st and 2nd of August. The wind goes clean offshore from the east, but the swell drops back to a pathetic 0.7ft to 1ft. The period stretches out to 9 seconds, which is nice, but there’s just no size to work with.
So, bottom line: don’t bother waxing up for the next two weeks. It’s one of those rare blank runs where the whole 16-day window is a dud. Forecasts can always change, but for now, this is a solid time to clean the garage.
Rusty.
