The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, straight up, I’m looking at the charts for Maghermore and I’m not gonna lie to you – it’s flat. Proper flat. We’re staring down the barrel of a long, dry spell. For the first ten days, from the 20th of August right through to the 29th, there’s nothing doing. The swell is barely a whisper, mostly ankle-snappers below 0.3 ft, and the wind is never playing ball. You’ll see a lot of cross-off and onshore slop, but even with the odd clean window, there’s just no wave energy to work with. The combined energy figures are absolutely tiny, often in the single digits (4 to 36), which tells you all you need to know. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s not unusual. You’d be better off polishing your board than getting your hopes up.
Then we get to the 1st of September. Finally, a pulse of life. Tuesday morning sees a 3 ft swell from the south, with a period of 7 seconds. The wind is offshore from the west at 15 km/h, so it’ll be clean. The combined energy jumps to 81, which is still weak but it’s the best we’ve seen. It’s surfable, but the conditions are still only ordinary. Tuesday afternoon, the swell bumps up to 5 ft from the SSW, and the energy kicks up to 423 (moderate). The wind goes cross-offshore from the WSW at 15 km/h, keeping things clean. This is our standout. That 5 ft is a bit meaty for beginners, but it’s the only real window of decent surf. The water temperature is a touch warmer than normal at 64°F.
After that brief burst, it’s back to the doldrums. From the 2nd of September onwards, the swell drops away again, back to 0.3 ft and 0.7 ft, with the energy falling back to single digits. The wind stays offshore now and then, but there’s nothing to push you down the line. The 4th of September sees a bit of a cross-shore mess with 2 ft, but it’s not worth the paddle.
So, if you’re desperate, you’ve got one shot: Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning might be the pick of it for a few small, clean ones. The afternoon has more size but it’s a bit of a gamble. Otherwise, keep the wax in the wrapper. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
