The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Mother Nature's got cookin' for us at Maghermore.
Honestly, for the next couple of weeks, it's looking pretty bleak. We've got a long dry spell ahead. From now, the 23rd of August, right through until the morning of Friday the 28th, it's just wave-less or junk. You'd be better off mowing the lawn. The water's a touch warmer than usual for this time of year at 64°F, but that's about the only highlight for a while.
Come Friday the 28th, we finally see a flicker of life. The morning shows a glassy, clean surface with a tiny 0.5ft south swell. The combined energy is a weak 56, so it's barely a ripple, but with the wind dropping to nothing and that glassy texture, it might just be ridable if you're desperate for a leg stretch. The afternoon shifts to a light offshore, but the swell stays tiny.
Moving into the first week of September, there's a slight pulse trying to build. Check out Thursday the 3rd in the afternoon: the swell jumps to 4ft from the south, with a short period of 5 seconds. It's cross-offshore and clean, with the combined energy sitting at a moderate 81. Not a world-beater, but it's the best we've seen in two weeks. That carries into Friday the 4th with a cleaner 3ft south-southeast swell. For a beginner spot that's inconsistent at the best of times, these are your only real windows. The winds are light and clean, so if you're just learning to pop up, this is your chance.
After that, it's all downhill again. The swell drops back to barely a bump as we head into the second week, with strong offshore winds on the 7th of September blowing 25-28 mph. The swell is too small to paddle into against that much wind. A kite surfer might have a field day, but for a paddle surfer? Hard pass.
Keep your eyes on the charts, boys and girls. It tends not to stay this flat for long.
Rusty.
