Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Magheraroarty Strand over the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s looking like a bit of a slow start. The first week or so is pretty much a write-off for a decent paddle. We’ve got a long stretch from Saturday the 11th right through to Sunday the 20th of July where the surf is just poor. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross or onshore, and it’s choppy. There’s barely enough energy to get excited about, with combined energy values mainly in the double digits, like 72 on the 12th or 67 on the 14th. You’d be better off checking the tide pools or going for a long walk.
Things start to get interesting around Tuesday the 21st of July. We see a bit of a pulse coming through. The morning of the 21st is still a bit messy with a 6ft cross-shore swell from the north, but the combined energy jumps to 429 (moderate wave energy). The real standout comes on the afternoon of the 21st of July. The wind swings to a light cross-offshore from the WSW, which is a major positive. The swell drops a touch to 4ft from the west at 8 seconds, but the energy is still solid at 291 (moderate wave energy). It’s a clean window, and for a point break like this, that west swell direction is looking good. The water temp is about 57°F, which is bang on average for the time of year, so a good 4/3 wetsuit is all you need.
The other date to have on your radar is Saturday the 25th of July. By the afternoon, we’re looking at a 7ft swell from the WNW, with a combined energy of 439 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the WSW. Now, that 7ft is getting up there. For a point break, that’s a proper size, and it’s likely only for the more experienced crew. It’s a promising call, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
The rest of the second week is a bit of a mixed bag with some clean cross-off winds but the swell either too small or too blown out. The Sunday the 26th sees a 8ft swell from the NW, but with onshore winds, it’s going to be messy.
Overall, the best bet is that Tuesday afternoon, the 21st of July. Keep that window pinned for a clean, fun-sized session.
