The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s shaping up for Magheroarty Strand over the next couple of weeks. Honest truth? This spot is inconsistent at the best of times, and the next 16 days are mostly a write-off – but there’s a couple of fleeting windows that might get your hopes up.
From now (Sunday, July 19) through to Thursday, July 23, it’s flat to poor. Small, weak, messy cross-onshore slop with hardly any energy – combined swell energy barely scraping triple digits (70 to 146). The water is sitting at 61.3° this morning, which is 4.0° warmer than normal for this time of year – pretty unusual, but it doesn’t make the waves any better.
First real chance comes Friday, July 24. The morning offers a 5.2 ft WNW swell with 10-second period, clean with cross-off wind – that’s a step up. But the afternoon is the standout: 5.9 ft from the same direction, 11-second groundswell, clean and cross-off again. That’s a proper long-period swell for a point break, meaning better shape and more push between sets. Combined energy hits 745 – moderate but solid. It’s still only a marginal forecast, so don’t expect perfection, but if you’re desperate, that’s your best window.
Saturday, July 25 morning brings a bigger 7.2 ft WNW swell with 11-second period and clean cross-off wind – combined energy 1123 – but the forecast note says it’s too big for this break. At 7.2 ft, it’s well over the beginner-friendly range, and the point might not handle it. Only for experts, and even then it’s iffy. By afternoon it’s dropping and turning messy.
Sunday, July 26 and Monday, July 27 are blown out – moderate cross-onshore winds, choppy, poor surf. Tuesday, July 28 morning sees another 7.2 ft WNW swell (11 seconds, 1177 energy) with cross wind – again too big for this
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Very mild (max 14°C on Sun night, min 11°C on Tue night). Wind will be generally light. | Days 4-6 Weather SummarySome drizzle, heaviest during Fri night.
