Table - best surf conditions forecast for Magheraroarty Strand over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Magheraroarty Strand.
First thing you need to know: the water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing weird going on there. The setup is a point break that’s exposed to the swell, but it’s inconsistent and rarely breaks, so we’re not looking at a run of easy scores.
The outlook starts with a few dud days. Thursday the 9th is a write-off – we’ve got a 4ft west swell coming in at 9 seconds, but the wind is a cross-off and the energy is weak (269) with marginal tide conditions. It’s just not happening.
Now, Friday the 10th morning is the one true standout here. The clouds clear out, the wind drops to a glassy 3 mph from the NW, and we get a 3ft groundswell from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds. The combined swell energy is moderate (247), and conditions are set to be glassy. This is your window. For a beginner-friendly point, you’ll find clean, forgiving waves. The swell direction is a good match for the optimum NW, and it’s small enough to be fun. Just be aware that the break is inconsistent, so you’ll be sitting and waiting for the sets.
After that, the rest of the forecast is a long stretch of poor conditions. From Friday afternoon all the way through to the morning of Wednesday the 23rd, we’re looking at 12 days of onshore or cross-onshore winds, choppy or lumpy conditions, and mostly tiny swell. There are a few pulses of bigger swell late in the window – on the 22nd we see an 8ft NW swell with a 13 second period and very strong energy (2415), but the wind is a fresh cross-on at 19 mph, making it ugly and lumpy. That’s for experts only, and even then, the wind kills it.
On the 24th, Friday morning, we get an 8ft WNW swell with 9 seconds and very strong energy (1088), and the wind is light and offshore from the north. The file says the swell is predicted to be too big for this break, so it’s a pass for most of us. That’s a heavy, short-period wave that’s gonna be a mess.
So, bottom line: if you look at the 16-day window, you’ve got one proper window – Friday the 10th morning. The rest is a long, dry spell. For a break that’s rarely consistent, this blank run is pretty normal for the area. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty out.
