Table - best surf conditions forecast for Magheraroarty Strand over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s talk about Magheraroarty Strand. It’s a slow start, no two ways about it. We’ve got a 16-day window, but for the first week and a half, it’s mostly a bust. There’s a big gap from Thursday afternoon all the way through to the following Saturday morning with nothing to recommend, so you’ll be waiting a while.
We get a little glimmer on Saturday, July 18th. The morning session is glassy with a light offshore breeze, and the swell is about 4ft from the NW, coming in at a short 5-second period. The combined energy is moderate (130), so it’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. Not a standout, but it’s the first real chance to get wet.
The real standout, and the one that’s got me a bit fired up, is Monday, July 20th. Now, the swell is predicted to be a bit meaty for this spot, around 7ft from the WNW. It’s over 8ft, so this is strictly for the experts. The wind is light and cross-on in the morning, turning cross-shore in the afternoon. The energy is strong (660), but the forecast says it’s likely too big for this break. For the experienced surfer looking for a challenge, this is the closest we get to a proper session.
Looking further out, Thursday, July 23rd afternoon sees a very long-period groundswell from the W, 8ft with a 13-second period and a massive combined energy of 2190. That’s a serious amount of power, but again, it’s flagged as too big for the break. The wind is strong and cross-shore, making it messy. This is big, powerful, and messy – not a typical day for a paddle.
Then, on Friday, July 24th, we get a turn. The morning brings a clean 6ft swell from the W with a 10-second period and a gentle offshore breeze from the S. The energy is strong (693) and the conditions are expected to be very good. The wind is straight offshore, so it’ll be clean. The crowds are listed as never, so you might have it to yourself. This is the best on offer, no question. It’s a point break, so that longer-period groundswell (10s) will wrap in nicely. The water temperature is about 59°F, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, so you might not need the thickest rubber.
So, to sum it up: it’s a long wait, but the 24th of July is the day to circle. The 20th is for the brave, and the 23rd is for the very brave and the big-wave crew. Keep an eye on the forecast, as things can change quick.
