The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Magheraroarty Strand. I’ve got to be straight with you – the first ten days or so of this forecast are a real struggle. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing worth paddling out for. It’s not until the last few days of the run that something finally gets our attention, but even then, it comes with a big red flag.
We start off on Tuesday, 14 July, with tiny 2ft swell from the west. The wind is light and cross from the east, but it’s just not enough to do anything with. The combined energy is only 127 – weak and disappointing. That same flat, messy pattern hangs around through the rest of the week and into the next. The swell flickers but never gets above 4ft, and it’s onshore or cross-onshore most of the time. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th see a bit of bump from the north, but it’s short period (6 seconds) and onshore, so it’s just a choppy, blown-out mess.
The whole second week into the 23rd is more of the same – tiny, weak waves, poor conditions, and nothing to get excited about. It’s a proper blank run.
Then, on Friday morning, 24 July, the forecast lights up. The swell jumps to 10ft from the west-northwest, with a long 13-second period. The combined energy is a massive 2558 – that’s serious power. The wind is cross-offshore and clean, and the setup looks good. But here’s the catch: that wave height is over 8ft. This is expert-only territory. For a beginner-friendly point break like Magheraroarty Strand, this is just too big. It’s going to be a wild, heavy beast. The same goes for Saturday the 25th, with 7ft swell and clean conditions – still pushing the limits for anyone who isn’t a seasoned charger.
Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th keep the energy high, with 7ft to 8ft swell and plenty of juice, but again, it’s big and powerful. The wind is offshore or cross-offshore, keeping it clean, but the size is the story. The combined energy stays in the 700 to 1300 range. For the experienced crew, these are the days to watch. For the rest of us, it’s a skip.
The very end of the run, Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th, starts to drop back down, with the swell easing to 5ft and then 3ft, but the wind is strong and the quality is poor again.
So, the standout here is the window from Friday the 24th through Monday the 27th. That’s where the power is. But it’s only for the experts. The best of the best is Friday the 24th with that 10ft, 13-second groundswell from the west-northwest and clean, cross-offshore winds. It’s going to be a heavy, grinding day. If you’re not up for that, there’s just nothing else on offer in this 16-day window.
Stay safe out there, and pick your battles.
Rusty.
