Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Magheraroarty Strand.

First things first, the water is sitting at 59° – that’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a slightly thinner suit.

Right now, we’re in a bit of a flat spot. The first proper chance to get wet doesn’t come until Friday morning, the 3rd of July. That’s a small cross-off swell, around 3 ft from the NW, and the wind is manageable. It’s a marginal call, but it’s something. The energy is low (271), so don’t expect much push.

The real standout window opens up on Friday afternoon. The swell drops back a bit to 4 ft, but that NW swell has a nice 11-second period – proper groundswell – and with a light SSE breeze, it’s looking clean. Combined energy is moderate (326). This is your best bet for the first week. Get on it.

Saturday the 4th sees a jump in size – 8 ft from the west – but the wind is howling 22 mph. That’s a washout. Even though it’s cross-off, that much wind will trash it. Not worth paddling out.

The rest of the first week is a bit of a write-off. Swell hangs around 5 ft to 6 ft, but that moderate to fresh SW wind keeps things bumpy. There’s a few marginal windows, but nothing to get excited about.

Then we get a nice little run from Wednesday the 8th. Morning of the 8th has clean 4 ft west swell with a light SW wind – score. Then Thursday the 9th morning is a gem: glassy conditions, 4 ft west swell with a 10-second period. The energy is still moderate (238), but that glass-off makes it a top pick for a clean session.

The 10th of July is another solid day – 4 ft swell from the WNW, 11-second period, light offshore to cross-off breeze. Clean lines, good energy (376). This one’s worth marking on the calendar.

Things go a bit quiet again from the 11th through the 15th. The swell drops, winds shift onshore or cross-off but with chop. There’s a small glassy window on the morning of the 12th with just 3 ft, but it’s weak (78 energy). Not a standout.

Then on Monday the 13th, a bigger pulse rolls in – 6 ft from the west with a very long 13-second period – proper energy (1068). But the wind is cross-onshore from the NE, which will mess up the shape. That deep period groundswell is better suited to a point or reef, so this exposed beach setup will likely be lumpy. It’s a look, but not a call.

The final days taper off into tiny, weak surf with onshore wind. The 16th and 17th of July offer nothing worth chasing.

So, to sum it up: the Friday afternoon grind on the 3rd and the clean Thursday morning on the 9th are your highlights. Friday the 10th is also a solid shout. The bigger stuff looks too windy or messy. Get on the small, clean windows while they’re here.

Rusty.
