The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Magheraroarty Strand.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 58°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
Honestly, the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a long, dry spell from now until the 21st of July. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, and the conditions are just lumpy or choppy. There’s nothing worth getting wet for. The energy is weak, with values barely cracking 100 (55 to 84), and that WNW swell is just too small and short-period to do anything with.
Then, things start to look a little more interesting. On the morning of the 22nd of July, we get a decent pulse of swell. The waves are pushing 7 ft from the W, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps way up to 614, which is a solid moderate to strong pulse. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SW, so it’ll be clean. This is the standout of the whole window. However, it’s a point break that’s inconsistent, so don’t expect waves every set. Also, at 7 ft, this is getting into expert territory, not for the beginners. The afternoon turns onshore and messy, so get on it early.
After that, the 23rd of July morning still has some good, clean waves from the SE wind, with 5 ft swell from the W and energy at 335. It’s still a solid option, but not the top pick.
The following days, from the 24th onward, the swell drops back down and the wind starts to get messy again, with rain and stronger winds making conditions poor or marginal. There’s a brief moment on the 28th of July morning with a 4 ft W swell and clean conditions, but the energy is lower (224) and it’s not the same quality as the 22nd.
So, bottom line: If you’re an expert, the morning of the 22nd of July is your window. Otherwise, you’re waiting a long time for a very short, inconsistent session.
Rusty.
