Table - best surf conditions forecast for Magheraroarty Strand over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We're looking at a long stretch of barely any swell and dodgy wind, so don't bother paddling out until we get to the second week. The first real chance of anything rideable shows up around the 18th, but even that’s a messy, blown-out 5ft to 5ft onshore slop, not worth your time.
The real standout window, and I mean the only one worth circling on the calendar, is the 23rd of July. Magheraroarty Strand is an inconsistent point break, so when it’s on, it’s a treat. On Thursday the 23rd, we’re looking at a solid 7ft to 8ft swell rolling in from the WNW, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a moderate wave energy (793 and 705) and with a gentle cross-shore breeze, conditions are forecast to be clean. Now, this is a big one – over 7ft, so this is strictly for experienced surfers. The swell direction from the WNW is a perfect match for this spot's optimum NNW, so it'll wrap in nicely. The water is sitting around 57°, which is about average for the time of year, no major surprises there.
The day before, on the 22nd, there’s a bigger 7ft to 8ft swell from the W, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy and messy. That’s a pass for me. On the 21st, you get a clean, cross-off 5ft wave, but it’s a bit smaller and the wind is a fresh breeze, so it’s not the standout.
So, keep your powder dry. The 23rd of July is the day. Get there early, because if it’s breaking, and it’s clean, it’ll be worth the wait.
Rusty.
