Alright folks, Rusty here with the long-range look for our stretch of coast. It’s a bit of a mixed bag to be honest, so let’s get into it.
We’re starting off this Friday morning, the 3rd of July, with a bit of a messy one. The water is a touch warmer than normal at a mild 15°, so it's not freezing. The swell is a weak 3ft from the NW with a short period, only 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 138 and the wind is a moderate cross-off from the SW. It’s clean, but the energy just isn't there for a proper session. Later on Friday afternoon things mellow out, but it's still not really doing anything special.
Now, Saturday the 4th of July is where we see a real shift, but it’s not all good news. The swell jumps up, with the morning seeing a solid 8ft from the west. The period is still short at 9 seconds, but the energy jumps to a strong 1005. That's a lot of water moving. Problem is, this spot (Magheraroarty Strand) is an exposed point, and at that size it’s simply too big. Unless you're an absolute expert and you know this bank inside out, I’d be giving this one a miss. That strong breeze from the WSW is going to create some challenging conditions. The trend continues through the weekend; lots of wind, solid swell, but the quality just isn't there for a clean ride.
There's a bit of a gap in quality here. We’ve got strong winds and messy conditions for several days. The most promising window in the near term looks to be Wednesday afternoon, the 8th of July. The swell drops a bit to 4ft from the WNW with a light breeze. The energy is moderate at 222. It’s not going to be epic, but the lighter winds will make it a lot more pleasant, and it might just be about the best bet for a beginner to get a few. The light cross-off wind will keep things tidy.
If you can wait, the real standout of this forecast lands on Tuesday the 14th of July. The morning brings a clean 6ft swell from the west with a light cross-off breeze. The period is short at 8 seconds, but the energy is moderate at 467, and it’s the consistency and the offshore wind that makes this one special. This is your best call. Tuesday afternoon keeps the clean conditions with a solid 6ft swell.
Looking further ahead to the 16th of July, we get another pulse of big swell. Thursday morning sees a 7ft west swell with a gentle cross-off breeze and energy at 579. Again, this is edging towards the expert zone, but the conditions are much better than the previous big swell. Thursday afternoon sees it jump again to 8ft from the WNW, with energy soaring to 1047. That is very strong, and at this spot, that's only for the brave.
Finally, on the 18th of July (Saturday), we get another massive pulse: 8ft from the WNW, with energy at 1245 and a cross-off breeze. It’s going to be big and powerful, and again, only the experts should be looking at it.
In short, the next week or so is a mix of small, weak swells and then big, blown-out conditions. The one day I’d circle on the calendar is Tuesday the 14th of July for cleaner, more manageable waves. The big swells that follow are just too much for this break unless you’re really keen.
