Alright folks, Rusty here. Grab a coffee and let’s see what this next stretch has to offer for the Magheroarty Strand area.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: it’s a rough start. The first week or so is a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. Strong southwesterly winds are gonna chop it up and the conditions are just plain poor. The combined swell energy is moderate, but the wind state and cross-off conditions are making a mess of things. You’re looking at a blank run of about 5 to 6 days before anything even starts to look interesting.
Things start to get our hopes up a little on Thursday, 9th July. Early morning, the wind drops to a gentle breeze, skies are clear, and we’ve got a 4ft swell from the west at 9 seconds. The combined energy is a modest 258, so it’s a small, weak pulse. The forecast suggests "good surf conditions" for that Thursday morning, so if you’re desperate, that’s your window. But honestly, it’s still barely on the radar.
The standout window looks to be Tuesday morning, 14th July. We get a touch of glassy conditions with an east-northeast breeze so light it’s almost not there. The swell is only 3ft from the west at 10 seconds, but with the glassy surface and the combined energy reading 145, it’s the cleanest wave of the whole run. You’ll have it almost to yourself too, crowd-wise. For a proper long-period groundswell, this short period means the sets will be a bit more frequent and easier to get into. It’s a small, clean day for the logs or a longboard.
After that, the 16-day forecast tails off into nothing but poor surf, with most days looking like a mess of cross-onshore or onshore winds and tiny, weak swell. The end of the run, around 19th to 21st July, throws up some bigger swell (over 7ft), but the wind is brutal and the period is short and weak. That kind of setup with a beach break is more interesting for the kite crew than us paddle surfers. It’s just not worth it.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a total dud. The best chance you’ve got is the glassy, small waves on Tuesday morning, 14th July. It's not a classic, but it’s the only clean wave in the lineup. Hang in there.
Rusty.
