The Lowdown

Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ up at Magheraroarty Strand.

The next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag, honestly. There’s some proper size on the cards, but for a lot of it, the swell is going to be too much for this spot, especially if you’re not an experienced surfer. We’ve got a bit of a lull in the middle there too, before things get interesting again right at the end of the month and into September. Let’s break it down.

The first real action kicks off on Tuesday the 18th. The afternoon looks like the pick of the day. It’s gonna be raining, with a cross-offshore wind from the WSW at 22 mph, and the swell is coming in at 8ft from the West with a period of 9 seconds. The wave energy is solid (854). This is a powerful, clean swell, but at 8ft, it’s starting to get a bit big for the average punter. It’s a serious wave, you’d want your wits about you, but for the right crew, it’s a goer.

Wednesday the 19th keeps the size up. Morning brings a 8ft swell from the West (period 10 seconds), with that cross-off wind swinging to the SW at 16 mph. Wave energy is up there at 1200. Clean conditions again, but this is now in the "experts only" territory. If you’re a beginner, give it a miss. The afternoon drops a touch to 7ft, but the wind goes cross-shore, so it won’t be as clean.

There’s a proper dry spell from Thursday the 20th all the way through to the morning of Monday the 24th. The wind is onshore, the swell is small and messy, or just too weak. Not worth paddling out for.

But then, Monday the 24th afternoon is a standout. That’s when things change. You get a clean 7ft swell from the West, with a long period of 11 seconds. And the wind? It’s a proper offshore, blowing from the South at 12 mph. The wave energy is 938, a good, solid muscle. This is a gorgeous-looking combination for a point break like this. That long period will wrap in nicely, shaping up some good walls. This is the one to circle on the calendar.

After that, the end of the month and the start of September just roars back in, but again, it’s too big. The 29th of August afternoon has a massive 13ft swell from the WNW (period 9 secs, energy 2431), and the 1st of September has a 10ft swell. These are huge, dangerous waves. The wind is favourable, but this is for tow-surfers or absolute nuts. The morning of the 31st of August offers a little respite, a clean 2ft wave from the NW with offshore wind, but it’s basically a knee-high dribbler.

So, my take? If you can surf serious, powerful waves, Wednesday the 19th is a goer. If you want the best all-round conditions with a long-period groundswell and perfect offshore wind, don’t miss Monday the 24th of August afternoon. That’s the gem in this forecast. The rest is either too small or too big, but that Monday session is the one.

Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
