The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, so we’re starting with a bit of a grim stretch, if I’m bein’ honest. There’s a real gap in decent surf here for the first few days. The swell is tiny and the wind is all over the shop, so you’re not gonna wanna paddle out for this.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday, 24 August. Magheroarty Strand wakes up with a clean, cross-offshore breeze and a solid 5ft wave from the WNW. The swell period is a nice, long 11 seconds, which means proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is a solid 535 – that’s a good, punchy amount of power. The water is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, at 61°, which is a nice bonus. Tuesday morning, the swell drops a bit, but that stiff cross-offshore wind from the ESE at 16 mph is gonna be a bit too strong for clean conditions on that size, so we’ll let that one slide.
Now, lookin’ ahead, there’s a promising, but less certain, window. The standout session is shaping up for Thursday, 3 September. We’ve got a clean, moderate offshore wind from the SSW, and the swell is back up to 5ft from the west. The combined energy is a hearty 333. This is a real good combo for Magheroarty, and with the wind being clean, the waves should hold shape nicely. It’s a point break, so it should handle that long-period energy well.
After that, it gets messy again. The end of the forecast period brings some real size, with 10ft+ swell predicted for the 5th of September, but the guidance clearly says it’s too big for this break. That’s one for the experts only, if anyone’s brave enough.
So, if you’re after a surf, the best bet is the Monday morning, 24 August session for the first good clean waves, and keep your eye on Thursday, 3 September for what could be the pick of the bunch.
Rusty.
