Right, grab a coffee, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Magheraroarty Strand (point). It’s a bit of a mixed bag, and we’ve got a stretch of quiet days ahead before things might turn on.
We’re starting off with some decent sized but messy swell. Saturday morning the 4th of July has a 8ft swell from the West, with a 9-second period and combined energy sitting at 837 (moderate wave energy). The cross-off wind is blowing at 25 mph, so it’s not going to be clean – honestly, it’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing one, given the strong wind and poor surf quality. A beginner would find that size a bit much anyway.
Sunday the 5th through Tuesday the 7th sees the swell drop a little to around 6ft, but the wind stays gusty and cross-off from the SW. The energy stays moderate (around 537-567), but the conditions are marginal at best, with rain and cloud. Not one for a session, really. The water temp sits at 58°, which is about average for the time of year.
Now, Wednesday the 8th is where it starts to look interesting. The swell backs off to 4ft from the West, period still 9 seconds, but the wind drops right out. Wednesday morning we’ve got a light breeze, and by the afternoon it goes glassy – 3 mph from the WSW. Combined energy is 260 (weak), but for a point break like this, that long-period groundswell potential (over 9 seconds) with glassy conditions is a proper standout. This is the best on offer in the whole period. Clean, small, and perfect for a longboard or a funboard. No crowds mentioned, so you might have it to yourself.
Thursday the 9th keeps the good run going – 4ft to 4ft from the West, glassy in the morning with a slight air, light easterly wind. That’s a beauty. By the afternoon a north wind comes onshore, so get out early.
Friday the 10th sees the swell hold at 4ft but the period bumps to 11 seconds from the WNW, combined energy at 422 (moderate). Cross-off wind from the SE at 9 mph keeps it clean. It’s not as good as Wednesday’s glass, but it’s still surfable and better than the first few days.
After that, from Saturday the 11th through to Saturday the 18th of July, it’s a long flat spell. Waves drop below 3ft, energy falls into double digits (79 down to 19), and winds turn cross-on or onshore from the north and northeast. There’s nothing worth paddling out for – you’d be chasing whitewash. This is a solid week-plus of poor conditions.
Finally, Sunday the 19th of July shows a little uptick: 2ft to 3ft from the WNW with a 9-10 second period, and a light SSW wind going offshore in the afternoon. Combined energy around 97-157 (weak to low moderate). It’s ordinary, but at least the wind is kind. That’s the most you can hope for after that long gap.
So overall: the standout is Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th in the first week – glassy or light winds, clean lines. The rest is either too windy or too small until maybe the 19th, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
