The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Magheraroarty Strand is a tough one. For the first week, it’s pretty much a write-off. We’re looking at hardly any swell, and what little there is comes with messy cross-shore or cross-onshore winds. The water temp is sitting at 58°, which is just about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real glimmer of anything happens on Monday, the 20th of July. The morning sees a tiny 1 ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, making it clean. The wave energy is weak (43). It’s *surfable* but only just, and for a beginner point break like this, it’s not going to get you excited. Then the whole situation gets a bit wild.
From Tuesday the 21st through to Wednesday the 22nd, the swell jumps up, and the wind goes cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean. But the problem is the wind speed. Tuesday sees 22 mph winds with 5 ft swell from the W – that’s a lot of breeze for a little wave. The energy is moderate (301). By Wednesday morning, we’ve got 7 ft swell from the W, but that’s paired with a strong 28 mph wind. The combined energy is strong (556). That’s too big for beginners and only for experts, but even then, with that much wind, it’s going to be a battle. For a beach setup, this is looking more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle session.
That’s the best of it. The rest of the second week, from Thursday the 23rd onward, drops back down to small, weak swells, mostly under 3 ft, with more clean but cross-offshore winds. Nothing stands out. The gap between any decent surf is basically the whole first week, and after that windy blast, it's back to small stuff.
So, the standout is the Wednesday the 22nd of July, with that 7 ft swell from the W. It’s the biggest of the run, but the wind is a beast. If you’re a seasoned local with a big-wave board and a death wish, maybe. For everyone else, it’s a wait-and-see.
Rusty.
