Alright, let's get into it.

Well, folks, it’s a bit of a lean run coming up for Magheraroarty Strand. The next sixteen days are a real mixed bag, and honestly, we’re looking at a lot of wind-affected or just plain flat conditions. The first real chance to get wet isn’t until this Friday afternoon, the 3rd of July.

Friday afternoon is where we’ll see the best of it for a while. Magheraroarty Point serves up a clean 4ft NW groundswell, with a period of 11 seconds. The wind is blowing offshore from the SSW at 12 mph, which should keep things tidy. The water is sitting at 58°, a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which is nice. Combined swell energy is sitting at 292 (moderate), and with that offshore wind, it’s worth a look. This is the standout of the whole period.

After that, it turns ugly. Saturday the 4th sees the swell jump to 8ft from the W, but it’s a short-period 9-second wind swell, and the wind is howling at 22 mph from the WSW. That’s a cross-offshore, but the wave quality is rated as poor. Combined energy hits 837-896 (strong), but the wind will rip it to shreds. For experts only if you’re bored, and even then... Beginners, stay well away.

Sunday the 5th is a write-off – no measurable swell.

Monday the 6th we get 6ft of W wind swell, but again, it’s short period (8 seconds) and the wind stays strong from the SW at 19 mph. Energy is moderate (454-468), but the conditions are not good.

Tuesday the 7th drops to 6ft, still a W wind swell, wind easing to 12 mph from the WSW. The morning session is rated as marginal and the energy drops to 498. By the afternoon, it’s clean but the swell is down to 5ft. Still not great.

Wednesday the 8th is a slight improvement. The morning is marginal with a 4ft W swell, but by the afternoon, the wind drops to 9 mph from the WSW and the swell settles to 4ft with a 9-second period. It’s clean with a gentle breeze, and the energy is 209 (weak). This is the next semi-decent session, but it’s not a patch on Friday.

Then we hit a flat spell. Thursday the 9th morning is glassy and clean with a tiny 3ft swell – surfable but very ordinary. After that, the swell fades badly. From the 10th through to the middle of the month, we see nothing but tiny, gutless waves, often with poor wind. There’s a couple of glassy mornings on the 10th and 12th with 3ft and 3ft waves, but it’s barely worth a paddle.

Around Tuesday the 14th of July, a new 5ft W swell arrives with a 10-second period. But it’s coming with a light cross-onshore from the ENE. The energy is high at 477 (moderate), but the conditions are marginal. It’s a long-range hope, but not a certainty.

For the rest of the period, it’s mostly flat or blown-out with very weak energy readings.

Bottom line: If you want a wave, you gotta be on Friday afternoon, July 3rd at Magheraroarty. A clean 4ft NW groundswell with offshore wind. The rest of the fortnight is a challenge, with a couple of possible smaller windows around Wednesday the 8th afternoon and Tuesday the 14th, but they’re not standouts.

Stay patient, lads. It’ll turn.

Rusty.
