The Lowdown
Alright everyone, Rusty here again, letting you know what's cookin' with the surf over the next couple of weeks.
We're in for a slow start, with a lot of funky onshore winds and poor surf for the first few days. The water's sitting at about 61°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you'll be fine in a spring suit.
The first real window, and the clear standout of the whole forecast, lands on Monday, August 24th. The morning brings a 6ft swell from the WNW, with an 11-second period—some nice groundswell energy pushing through (665). The wind is a light SSE breeze, blowing offshore, which is gonna keep things clean. The afternoon session is even better—glassy conditions with a 6ft WNW swell (600). For a beginner-friendly point break like Magheraroarty Strand, this is about as good as it gets. The swell is a perfect size, the direction is spot on, and the wind is dialed. Get on it.
After that, the surf drops right off into the doldrums. The rest of the week and into the weekend is a bust with tiny, weak swells and poor winds. There's a little flicker of hope late on Friday, August 28th and into Saturday, August 29th with clean, offshore winds, but the swell is tiny (3ft to 3ft) and weak (energy in the 70-132 range). It's surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Looking further ahead, there's a potential highlight on Monday, August 31st. The afternoon shows a glassy 7ft swell from the NW, but the energy is moderate (411) and the report says it might be too big for this break. For a beginner spot, that's a big red flag. It's a long-range call, so we'll keep an eye on it, but it's not the one for the average surfer at Magheroarty.
Rusty.
