Alright, let’s talk about Magheraroarty Strand. This is a point break, exposed to the north-northwest, and it’s an inconsistent setup, so when it’s on, it’s a treat, but you’ve got to be patient.
Right now, we’re in a bit of a dry spell. The first few days are a write-off. Strong southwesterly winds are ripping across the beach, making a mess of the swell. The combined energy is weak, but with those winds, it’s just not worth it. You’d be fighting a losing battle.
We’re looking at a gap of nearly three days before anything half-decent shows up. The first real chance comes Wednesday, July 8th. The wind backs off to a gentle breeze, and we get clean waves. Swell is 4 ft from the west, with a 9-second period. The energy is moderate, not massive, but the conditions are better. This is the kind of day where the point starts to feel like a proper wave again. Thursday, July 9th is similar: 4 ft to 4 ft from the west, same period, and clean with a gentle breeze. These two days are your pick of the entire forecast.
After that, the wind swings around again. Friday, July 10th through to the end of the first week, the waves get smaller, the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore, and the quality drops right off. The energy levels drop to weak, and it’s just not fun.
Into the second week, the outlook is pretty flat. Monday, July 13th morning offers a brief moment: glassy conditions, only 2 ft from the west, but a 10-second period and weak energy. It’s surfable but ordinary. You could get a few ankle-biters if you’re desperate. Tuesday through to Sunday, July 19th, it’s a mix of small, weak swell and poor to marginal conditions. The energy stays low, and winds keep messing with the shape. A brief spike in energy on Saturday, July 18th morning with 5 ft swell from the north-west and a 10-second period, but the wind is a fresh breeze and the forecast says it’s only marginal. Not a standout.
To be honest, for this stretch, if you’ve got a kite, those bigger, windier days look more interesting than trying to paddle into a mushy, cross-onshore mess. The water temp here is average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.
For now, your best bet is that Wednesday and Thursday. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s clean and it’s a wave.
Rusty.
