Table - best surf conditions forecast for Magheraroarty Strand over the next 16 days.
Alright, Magheraroarty crew, let’s break down the next couple of weeks. It’s a proper tale of two halves – a bit of action early, then a long quiet spell, then some bigger but messier stuff in the second week.
First real opportunity is Wednesday morning, July 8th. You’ve got a 5ft swell coming from the W with a moderate energy reading of 324. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s a decent, workable little groundswell. The wind is a cross-off from the SW at 15 mph, which is going to keep the faces looking tidy. Water temp is 58°F, right about average for the time of year. It’s the only clear standout in this whole run – the best of the bunch by a long way. It is an inconsistent spot, so be ready to wait for the sets. After Wednesday morning, the wind picks up to 20 mph from the WSW, and things get a bit more iffy.
From Thursday morning, July 9th all the way through to Sunday, July 19th, it’s basically a no-go zone. Swell drops right off, the wind turns onshore and cross-onshore, and the energy reading tumbles into the double digits (weak energy). You’ll see days with tiny 1ft to 3ft wave heights and choppy, nasty conditions. It’s going to be a long wait. There’s a little bump on Saturday, July 19th, with a 3ft W swell and a 10-second period, but the wind is on it from the NNW at 20 mph, so it’s blown out.
The second week offers a bit more size but with messy wind. Monday morning, July 20th sees a 4ft WNW swell with 10-second period and moderate energy at 296. The wind is onshore from the N at 20 mph though, so expect chop. By Monday afternoon, the swell jumps to 5ft and energy hits 406 (strong), but it’s still cross-onshore and fairly choppy. That’s serious size for this spot – too big for beginners, and the wind will make it a real challenge for anyone out there.
Later on, Wednesday morning, July 22nd brings a fresh offshore wind from the SSW at 30 mph, which will be clean, but the swell has dropped back to 2ft on a 9-second period with weak energy at 104. Glassy, but tiny.
So, the call is simple: Wednesday morning, July 8th is your window. After that, you’re looking at a 12-day gap of poor surf, then a couple of bigger, messy days from July 20th that are only for the experienced. Keep your eyes on the forecasts – it’s been patchy, but it won’t stay this quiet forever.
Rusty.
