Alright folks, Rusty here with the long-range look at what we’ve got on offer.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a quiet stretch ahead. We’re looking at a real slow start with nothing worth paddling out for in the first week or so. The beginning of the period – Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th – we’ve got small, weak swell and cross-onshore winds chopping everything up, water temp here is sitting at 63°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, a solid 4° above average, so it feels weirdly tropical, but the waves just aren’t there.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Wednesday 8th July morning. Rossbeigh Strand (fairly exposed to swell, best on a WSW) finally gets glassy. The swell is small, only 4ft from the west with a 9-second period, but the wind is completely glass – just a slight air. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, so if you’re learning, this is your window. The combined energy is moderate at 258. It’s ordinary, but it’s the cleanest we’ll see for a while.
Then things get messy again for the rest of that first week. Thursday 9th morning looks promising – 4ft swell from the west, and glassy again, with moderate energy (276). That’s the stand-out of the whole outlook. The swell direction is a touch north of the optimum, but glassy conditions make up for it. It’s still small for experienced surfers, but if you want a clean, longboard-style wave, that Thursday morning is your best bet.
After that, it fades fast. Friday 10th drops to 3ft, and the wind turns cross-shore. From Saturday 11th through to Tuesday 21st July, it’s almost entirely poor. There are patches of clean, offshore winds – like Tuesday 14th afternoon with a gentle offshore and 2ft – but the swell is tiny, inconsistent, and the energy drops right off (119). There’s a weird spike of very long-period groundswell (19 seconds) on Monday 13th, but it’s only 0.7ft from the SSW, not enough to do anything at this beach break.
For the whole second week, you’re looking at flat spells and choppy conditions. Nothing here is worth chasing. It’s one of those blank runs that’s pretty normal for the area when the swell window just doesn’t line up.
If you’re desperate, keep an eye on Thursday 9th July morning. That’s your one real standout, just don’t expect much power.
Rusty.
