Right then, let's have a look at what's on offer for Rossbeigh Strand over the next couple of weeks. To be straight with you, it’s a bit of a slow burner. There are long stretches where it’s just not worth paddling out, but there are a couple of windows where it might just turn on for a session. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
The whole period kicks off with a pretty grim run. From Saturday the 4th right through until the end of Tuesday the 8th, the conditions are almost all poor. We’ve got onshore winds and the wave energy is weak – readings between 175 and 349 – just not enough push to make it fun. It’s all small, choppy, and messy. You’d be better off staying on the beach with a coffee.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. Wednesday the 9th morning does show a glimmer, with a glassy surface and small 4ft swell from the west at 9 seconds. The combined energy is still weak at 210, but that glassy wind makes it the first real chance for a slow, clean wave on a longboard. Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th mornings are similar – glassy or very light winds with 4ft to 3ft west swell. These are ‘ordinary conditions’ but at least you won’t be getting blown off your board. The energy is still low, so don’t expect much power.
There’s another gap in quality from Saturday the 12th through to Monday the 14th, with more cross-shore winds and building breeze. On Monday the 14th morning, we see a bit more size – 5ft west swell with a longer 10-second period – but it’s cross-shore wind, so expect some bumps.
But here’s where it gets interesting. The standout window is Tuesday the 15th. Tuesday morning offers up the best conditions of the entire forecast. We’ve got a 5ft west swell with a 9-second period, and the wind is glassy – light and variable, dead offshore. The combined energy jumps noticeably to 462, which is the highest reading in the whole outlook. That’s the morning to clear your diary. Rossbeigh Strand is fairly exposed to the west-southwest, and that incoming west swell with glassy conditions will give you clean, peelable lines. It’s a beginner-friendly break anyway, and with 5ft it’s still very accessible for most. Given that it’s fairly consistent here, you might have a little company – crowds are listed as ‘sometimes’, so expect a few other locals out, but nothing too hectic.
After that Tuesday high, the rest of the run fades away quickly. Wednesday the 16th and Thursday the 17th mornings are back to weak, cross-onshore slop, with energy dropping to 93. From Thursday the 17th through Sunday the 20th, it’s all small, short-period windswell, with winds picking up to a fresh breeze. The energy readings fall off a cliff, hitting as low as 17 – that’s barely a ripple. Not worth the wetsuit.
So, in short: forget the first week. The best bet is unquestionably Tuesday the 15th morning. Get on it early for clean, waist-to-chest high waves with that glassy lid. After that, the window closes again. Keep an eye on the 9th and 10th if you’re desperate for a gentle paddle.
