The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, looking at the next couple of weeks for our stretch of coast. To be straight with you, the first week and a half is a real struggle. We’ve got small, weak pulses and it’s mostly just a write-off for a proper paddle. You’ll be waiting a long time for anything with a pulse.
The first hints of life don’t show up until the 23rd of July, with a tiny 3ft swell rolling in from the west on Thursday afternoon, period a weak 9 seconds. The combined energy is still low at 193 (moderate), but it’s glassy calm and surfable, just very ordinary. That’s the first day you could even bother getting wet.
The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, arrives on the morning of Friday the 24th of July. Rossbeigh Strand wakes up to a solid 6ft groundswell out of the west-northwest, with a nice long 11-second period. The combined energy jumps to 804 (strong), and we’ve got a light offshore breeze from the northeast keeping it clean. This is your window. The size is manageable for most, the power is there, and the conditions are right. It’s the best on offer by a long shot. The water temp is running a very unusual 67°, which is about 7° warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might not even need a wetsuit.
After that, Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th of July hold onto some decent, surfable waves as the swell eases but stays in the 5ft to 7ft range. Winds are cross-offshore, so it’ll be lumpy but still fun. Then from Monday the 27th, the swell starts to push up again, hitting 8ft from the west. That’s getting into expert territory, especially with a short 10-second period. The wind is also turning more southerly, making it choppy, so the quality drops. By the 28th and 29th, it’s a messy, windy, cross-onshore mess with 7ft+ swell. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle.
So, in short: suffer through the first week, then get ready for the 24th. That’s your best shot.
