The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checking in from the shores of Rossbeigh Strand. Let’s have a look at what’s headed our way over the next couple of weeks.
It’s been a rough start, with onshore winds and rain spoiling the party for the first few days. We’re looking at a bit of a dry spell before anything worthwhile shows up. From Wednesday the 19th right through to Sunday the 23rd, it’s pretty much a write-off: strong onshores, lumpy cross-chop, and poor surf conditions. The swell is there, but the wind is just ruining it. You’d be better off staying home.
Then, on Monday the 24th, we get a little glimmer of hope. The morning brings a glassy clean spell, with a 4ft WNW swell and a moderate combined energy of 425. The wind is dead calm, so it’ll be smooth as a mirror. It’s not huge, but it’s the first decent window in a while. That afternoon, though, the wind swings onshore again and it’s back to poor conditions.
Tuesday the 25th offers a bit more size, with a 8ft WSW swell in the morning, combined energy reading 880, and a clean cross-off breeze. It’s a solid beginner-friendly size, but the wind is a moderate breeze, so it’s not pristine. Still, it’s surfable.
The end of the first week and into the second stays pretty average. The 30th of August though, that’s a standout for the wrong reasons. A massive 18ft W swell with a very long period of 12 seconds is forecast, and the combined energy is a whopping 8867. That’s serious power. But the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, and the comment says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. This is expert-only territory, and even then, the wind is going to make it messy. The long period means it’ll be more suited to a point or reef, not a beach break like Rossbeigh.
The rest of the run into early September offers some small windows, like the 1st of September where a 6ft W swell with a clean cross-off breeze in the afternoon could be worth a look, but nothing is really screaming “go.” The overall pattern is one of waiting.
So, the best on offer is that Monday 24th August morning session at Rossbeigh Strand. It’s a glassy, clean 4ft WNW swell, the first real surfable moment in the run. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only time the conditions line up. After that, the 25th is a distant second, but the wind is a bit stronger.
Hang in there, it’s been a quiet stretch, but forecasts can change.
Rusty.
