The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what's on the cards for Rossbeigh Strand.
It's a bit of a slow start, with nothing really doing this Sunday. We've got a tiny 1ft SSW swell on the cards but it's just not worth getting wet for. You'll have to be patient for the first proper wave of the period.
Monday the 24th is where things start to get interesting. The morning brings in a clean 4ft wave from the NW with a nice 11-second period, and the wind is a light offshore from the east. That's a solid combo for a beginner-friendly wave, and the combined energy is moderate (337). The afternoon holds up as well, with the swell bumping up to 4ft from the WNW, so Monday looks like the first real chance to get a few clean ones.
Tuesday the 25th is still surfable but nothing special. The swell drops back to 3ft from the west with a shorter 9-second period. The conditions are clean with offshore winds in the morning and cross-off in the afternoon, but the energy is only moderate (179 in the AM, 123 in the PM). It’s ordinary but rideable.
Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th are a mixed bag. Wednesday has a glassy 2ft westerly swell but it's tiny and weak (40 energy). Thursday sees a bit more size at 4ft from the WNW with moderate energy (245), but the conditions are only "ordinary". Friday the 28th is a complete write-off with tiny swell and onshore winds.
Saturday the 29th is a no-go. We’ve got a 8ft to 8ft onshore slop from the WNW with a short 8-second period and strong onshore winds. The combined energy is strong (683-783), but it's a messy, blown-out mess. That's more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing one.
We then hit a long flat spell from Sunday the 30th right through to Tuesday the 1st of September. The swell barely registers, with readings of 1.0ft to 2ft and very low energy (31 to 142). It’s a quiet end to August.
Now, the real standout of this whole outlook is Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning is looking absolutely glassy with a clean 6ft west swell. The period is short at 7 seconds, but the wind is glassy from the SSW and the combined energy is a solid moderate (337). That's going to be clean, fun, and perfect for the beginners this spot is known for. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 7ft from the WNW but picks up a light cross-onshore wind. It’s still good, but the morning is the pick.
Thursday the 3rd of September sees the swell push over 8ft from the west, which is getting into expert-only territory. The combined energy is very strong (1236-1261). The morning has clean cross-off winds, but the size and power mean this is for experienced surfers only.
Friday the 4th of September is another one to circle. The morning brings a very clean 8ft west swell with light cross-off winds and very strong energy (958). The forecast is for "very good surf conditions." It's still big and powerful, so it's not a beginner wave, but for those who can handle it, this could be the best session of the whole period.
After that, the weekend of the 5th and 6th of September turns ordinary again, with dropping swell and onshore winds. The 7th of September is a complete write-off.
So, to sum it up: the best bets are the morning of Monday the 24th for a clean, fun beginner wave, and the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September for a glassy, clean session. The real highlight for the experienced crew is the morning of Friday the 4th of September, with a very clean, powerful west swell. The long-range stuff is promising, but you know how it is – keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
