The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Rossbeigh Strand over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week is a bit of a write-off for waves. We’re looking at tiny, weak surf with hardly any energy behind it. The combined energy is barely registering (20-49) for days, and the swell heights are just a nudge above flat, like 0.7ft to 2ft. It’s a real shame because the water is a massive 3° warmer than usual for this time of year, which is very unusual, but there’s nothing to ride. The winds are mostly cross or light cross-off, keeping the surface clean, but there’s just no swell to work with. You’d be better off having a swim.

Things don’t really get going until the end of the first week. The morning of Monday the 21st sees a tiny bump to 2ft, but it’s still weak. The real story is later on. From Sunday the 27th, we start seeing some proper size, with waves pushing 7ft to 8ft, but the wind is howling onshore from the west-northwest at 12 mph, making a complete mess of it. The energy is strong (over 1000), but the conditions are just ugly.

Now, if you’ve got patience, the absolute standout is the morning of Tuesday the 28th. The swell drops slightly to a very solid 7ft out of the west-northwest, with a moderate energy reading (922). The wind goes glassy light, swinging north at just 3 mph, giving us a light cross-shore. That’s the magic window – clean, powerful waves for the experienced crew. Anything over 8ft is expert-only, and this is right on the edge, so it’s a big, powerful, demanding wave. The best session of the whole period, no question.

The following morning, Wednesday the 30th, is also worth a mention. We’ve got 8ft of west-northwest swell, but it’s a bit onshore and the energy is still high (847). It’s not as clean as Tuesday, but the size is there for the brave.

Further out, the morning of Friday the 31st of July looks huge, with 10ft waves and massive energy (1808), but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s going to be a rough, lumpy beast. Only for the die-hards and the big-wave chargers.

Because of the long stretch of flatness, the first real chance at a wave is the morning of Monday the 20th, but it’s poor. The gap before anything decent is nearly a week. Keep your eye on the morning of Tuesday the 28th – that’s your best bet by a long shot.

Rusty out.
