The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s cast an eye over the long-range chart for Rossbeigh Strand. It’s a mixed bag for the next couple of weeks, so let’s wade through it.

The window opens with a bit of a dud. For the first few days, we’ve got swell on the way, but it’s messy. Monday the 17th sees a weak 3ft of cross-onshore slop with a short 8-second period. The water is a balmy 65.3°, and that’s a notable 4.3° warmer than usual for this time of year, which is a nice touch for the first surf we’re talking about. But with that onshore wind, it’s not doing us any favors. The energy is weak, sitting at 111.

Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th see a building pulse, but it's coming in with strong onshore winds. We're looking at 6ft to 11ft of junky, wind-blown surf. The energy builds to a strong level, hitting 2147 on Wednesday morning, but it’s all for nothing as the wind just wrecks it. Thursday the 20th is more of the same, with fresh cross-shore winds making a mess of a 7ft swell.

The first real chance for a surf comes on Friday morning, the 21st. It’s small, only 2ft, but the wind has finally swung around to a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, leaving things clean. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. That being said, a clean 2ft on a fairly consistent beach break might be worth a paddle for the beginners.

Then we hit a flat spell. From Friday afternoon right through to Monday the 24th, the swell drops right off. We’re talking 1ft with periods all over the shop. The energy is weak, with readings as low as 70. This is a solid few days of nothing. Keep the board in the car, but the forecast can always change.

Monday afternoon the 24th sees a bit of a pick-up with a 5ft cross-shore swell, but it’s still not clean. Tuesday the 25th brings a bigger 10ft SSW groundswell (9-second period) with light onshore winds, but the comment is “marginal” and it looks like a washing machine. The rest of that week into the 28th is a series of shifting winds and moderate swells, never really coming together. There’s a 6ft WSW swell on Friday the 28th, but the wind is on it.

The second week is all about one thing: size. And there’s a lot of it. From Saturday the 29th, we’re looking at consecutive days of 10ft to 16ft surf. The energy readings are off the charts, jumping from 1567 on Saturday to a whopping 4751 by Monday the 31st. This is serious, heavy water. Any of these days are strictly for experts only; this is way over 8ft and will mow down the unprepared. The winds are still mostly onshore or cross-onshore, adding to the chaos.

But then, hold on to your leggies. The standout of the entire run is Tuesday, the 1st of September. The forecast shows a massive 16ft WNP swell with a long 12-second period. The combined energy is enormous, hitting 7529. But that’s not the best part. The wind is forecast to be almost nothing, a slight air from the NE, which is cross-offshore. The comment says it all: wind and tide are favorable, but it’s too big for this break. The sheer size and power of this swell will make it a treacherous, boiling mess at the beach. It’s a sight to behold, but for the rare few who are true chargers, this is as good as it gets. It’s clean, powerful, and terrifying. This is the one to circle on the calendar.

So, to wrap it up. The next few days are poor. The middle of the week has a few small, clean windows. The real story is the massive, unsurfable swell in the second week, culminating in a potentially perfect but absolutely enormous day on the 1st.

Stay safe out there.
