The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk surf. It’s a pretty grim start here at Rossbeigh Strand, with a big gap in the forecast until the end of the month. The water temperature is about what you’d expect for this time of year.
The first thing that even looks like a wave is on Sunday morning, July 26th, with a 6ft swell from the NW. It’s got a short 8-second period, so it’s a lumpy, quick wind-swell. The energy is moderate (540), but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s messy. This is a big, drifty wave for the experts only. Monday morning, July 27th, is similar, with 5ft and cross-onshore wind (385 energy). Still a bit of a chore.
The real standout, the one to circle on the calendar, is Tuesday morning, July 28th. The forecast shows a 5ft groundswell from the WNW, with a 10-second period, so it’s got some proper push. The energy is strong at 481. The best part? The wind is glassy. Dead flat calm. That means the surf will be super clean, with proper shape. It’s a solid wave, so it’s for the more experienced crew, but if you can get out for that morning, it’s the best of the whole run. The crowds are “sometimes,” so you might see a few people, but nothing crazy.
The Tuesday afternoon has the wind turning cross-onshore again, with 6ft and 508 energy, but it loses that clean face. Wednesday morning, July 29th, still has some decent 4ft energy (479) but the cross-onshore wind is back.
After that, it fades into the first week of August. The Saturday morning, August 1st, has a tiny 4ft glassy morning, but it’s weak.
So, for the first week, it’s a total bust. The one shining light is the morning of Tuesday, July 28th. That’s your session. The rest is small and choppy. It’s a long wait, but that Tuesday morning looks like a proper treat.
Rusty.
