The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Well, there's a bit of a nothing start to this forecast for Rossbeigh Strand. The first few days are a write-off, with tiny lumps and messy cross-shore wind. We're looking at a real gap from Thursday the 20th through to Monday the 24th of August with nothing worth paddling out for. The best of the whole window is a very clear standout, but you've got to wait for it.

The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday the 24th of August, but it's only a sneaky afternoon session. The wind turns offshore from the ESE at 16 mph, keeping things clean, and the swell bumps up to 3 ft from the WNW with a moderate 10-second period. The combined energy is moderate (278), so there's a bit of push, but it's still a marginal call. Not a guarantee, but a cheeky chance if you're desperate.

The true standout, the one you're waiting for, is the morning of Wednesday the 26th of August. This is where it gets good. We've got a solid 6 ft swell from the W, with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is strong (735). The wind is barely a whisper from the NNE at 3 mph, coming in as a cross-offshore breeze, so you're looking at clean, glassy conditions. This is beginner-friendly at 6 ft, but it's a proper fun size for everyone. The only downside? The crowd factor is listed as "sometimes," so you might have a few mates out, but it's worth it.

The swell gets a bit too big for comfort after that. On the 30th of August, the swell is predicted to be too big for this break, with a 15 ft wave from the W and a combined energy of 5593 (very strong). That's expert-only territory, and the wind is cross-onshore, making it messy. The same goes for the 31st of August, with 13 ft and 10 ft days. Not for the faint-hearted.

The next decent window appears on the 1st of September, Tuesday morning. The swell has dropped to 7 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and combined energy is still strong (810). The wind is glassy from the W at 3 mph, giving you pristine conditions. It's a bit big for beginners, but intermediates will have a ball. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no drama there.

After that, it fades out again. The 2nd and 3rd of September are small and messy, with onshore winds and poor conditions. The 4th of September is a blowout, with fresh cross-onshore wind and lumpy 7 ft surf.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a dud. The clear pick of the month is the morning of Wednesday the 26th of August. The 1st of September is a solid second option if you're patient. Get out there for that Wednesday morning session, and you'll be smiling.

Rusty.
