The Lowdown
Alright, let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Inch Reefs. This is a pretty quiet start to the run, with not much happening for the first few days. There’s barely a pulse out there, so don't bother waxing up just yet.
Things start to get interesting around Tuesday the 25th in the morning. We’ve got some waist-high swell showing up, around 4ft from the West, with a period of 9 seconds – not a classic groundswell but enough to push through. The wind is light and blowing cross-off from the ESE, so it’ll be clean with some shape on it. The combined energy is moderate at 214, so there’s some push there. This is the first real standout in the outlook, but you’ll want to be an experienced surfer for this – the swell is manageable, and it’s a point break that will line up nicely with that W direction. Keep an eye on the crowds though, they can pop up here sometimes.
We then get a bit of a gap with onshore junk and small waves until Wednesday morning, September 2nd. Now this is the one to circle on the calendar. The morning offers up a glassy surface with winds so light you’ll barely feel them – it’s an S light air, with the water like a mirror. The swell jumps to 6ft from the WNW, still a short-ish period of 8 seconds, but the combined energy is strong at 495. This will be a proper size, but for advanced surfers only – anything over about 5ft here starts to get challenging, and at 6ft it’s going to be pushing it for the average punter. That W-NW swell direction works perfectly for the reef setup though. The water temperature is sitting around average for this time of year, so it’s nothing unusual to worry about.
That Wednesday afternoon it gets even bigger, hitting 7ft with the same WNW swell, but the wind shifts cross-on and brings in a few ripples. Still, the energy is very strong at 705, so if you can handle the size, there’ll be waves. It’s just not quite as clean as the morning.
After that, things get messy for a bit, with a big pulse on Thursday, September 3rd – 10ft from the West. That’s way too big for all but experts, and combined with cross-onshore winds, it’s a no-go for normal surfing. The energy is massive at over 1300, but you’d be looking at a kite-flying session, not a paddle session at this beach-and-reef setup. By Friday, the 4th, it drops back to 8ft but with strong onshore wind again, so it’s not worth getting excited about.
The last week of the outlook fades away with light, onshore junky conditions, small swell and poor surf. The only real advice I can give is to aim for Tuesday morning the 25th or that glorious Wednesday morning the 2nd of September – the 2nd is your absolute standout, provided you’ve got the skill for the size.
Stay stoked.
Rusty.
