The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for this stretch of coast.
Truth be told, the next few days are a write-off. We’ve got a long, slow start with nothing worth paddling out for. The first real glimmer of decent surf doesn’t show up until Tuesday the 25th of August, so you’re looking at nearly a week of flat or poor conditions before anything changes.
The stand-out window is the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August down at Inch Reefs. It’s a point break, so it handles swell well. The water is sitting at 65° – that’s about 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s notably warmer than you’d expect. We’ve got a solid 6ft swell rolling in from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is strong at 633. That’s a proper pulse. The wind is set to go glassy – dead calm, zero knots – which is about as good as it gets. That means the surface will be like a mirror. The waves will be clean and lined up. This is the best on offer in the whole 16-day window. The afternoon holds similar swell size and energy (500), but the wind shifts to a light cross-off, so the morning is the pick.
The morning of Thursday the 3rd of September has a little bump of 6ft from the W with a period of 8 seconds and energy at 416, but the wind is cross-off and light. It’s a decent option if you’re desperate, but it’s not in the same league as the Tuesday 25th.
The rest of the run is largely a mix of small, weak, or wind-affected conditions. Several days are blown out by cross-onshore winds, and the swell is often too small or too short-period to get excited about. The 31st of August sees a 7ft WNW swell with 645 energy, but it’s coming with a fresh cross-onshore breeze and lumpy conditions, so it’s one for the experts only and not a standout.
Bottom line: Mark your calendar for the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August. That’s your session. It’s a gem in a long stretch of doldrums.
Rusty.
