The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we've got a run of really small, weak surf at Inch Reefs. The first few days are just dribblers. Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th serve up tiny 2ft to 3ft swell from the west, with a combined energy of only 155 (Tuesday) and dropping to 89 (Wednesday). The wind is light and cross-off or offshore, so it'll be clean, but honestly, there's nothing to get excited about. It's that kind of "you could paddle out if you really wanted to" surf.
From Thursday the 16th through to the 24th, it gets even worse. We're looking at a solid gap of nothing. Waves are either non-existent or so small they're not worth a mention. The combined energy drops into the double digits, and the forecast is calling it poor conditions. There's a brief moment of glassy conditions on Thursday afternoon the 16th, but with 1ft of weak swell, it's a flat spell. This stretch is a write-off.
Then, things get interesting, but maybe not in a good way for everyone. Around the 26th of July, the swell cranks up. We're looking at a serious pulse of west swell hitting 8ft to 10ft. The combined energy rockets up to 1832 (Sunday afternoon) and 2065 (Monday morning) – that's very strong wave energy. This is big, powerful stuff. The wind, however, is cross-on and fresh, making it look lumpy and messy. For a point break like Inch Reefs, a 10ft west swell can be a beast, but with that wind, it's not going to be clean. It's a powerful, raw ocean out there, and honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. By Monday morning the 27th, the swell is still 10ft with a cross-on wind, but it's rated as too big for this break. Only experts with a death wish should even look at it.
The standout here, if you can call it that, is the morning of the 27th of July. The swell is massive at 10ft from the WNW, and the combined energy is a staggering 2065. The wind is a gentle cross-on, so it's not as lumpy as the day before, but it's still onshore. If you're an expert, that's the window to have a look at the biggest surf of the period, but it's going to be a wild, challenging session. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
So, the final word: nothing for the next week and a half, then a big, windy, powerful swell that's only for the brave. Keep an eye on the forecast, but don't hold your breath.
Rusty.
