The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Inch Reefs.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty flat. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf with naff winds. The first real chance of anything surfable won’t come until Monday the 20th of July, and even then we’re only talking about 0.7 ft waves from the west with a combined energy of just 84. That’s weak sauce. The winds are cross-offshore, which is fine, but the swell is so small it’s barely worth paddling out for. That same low-energy, small swell sticks around through Tuesday and Wednesday, but it’s still not enough to get excited about.
We’ve got a bit of a gap from around Wednesday the 23rd right through to the 28th of July where there’s practically nothing. It’s dry, but the swell is either non-existent or way too small. On the 28th, the morning turns glassy with a tiny 0.7 ft west swell at 12 seconds, but it’s just a whisper.
Now, if you’ve got some patience, there’s a glimmer late in the window. On Wednesday the 29th of July, we see a bump in the water. The morning brings a 5 ft west swell at 10 seconds with a combined energy of 372. That’s moderate energy, and the swell direction is right in the wheelhouse for Inch Reefs – it’s a point break that loves a good SW to W groundswell. The wind is light onshore, which isn’t ideal, but it’s not howling either. The swell period is a moderate 10 seconds, so it won’t be the most powerful, but it’s got enough to get some decent lines through the reef. This is your standout. It’s a solid step up, but at 5 ft, it’s still manageable for advanced surfers. The crowds are sometimes a problem here, so keep an eye out.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no shock to the system. Just your standard session.
So, the call is: wait it out. The early days are a write-off, but that Wednesday the 29th of July is the one to circle. Don’t get your hopes up for the weekend after that, as it drops back down again.
Rusty.
