The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk this out. The first few days are a total dud. Nothing but tiny, weak waves and poor conditions.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are a write-off. Sunday the 23rd morning, we get a little glimmer of hope with glassy conditions, but the swell is only 0.4m from the SSW with a long period of 14 seconds. It’s clean, but it’s basically flat.
The rest of the first week is a washout. Monday the 24th through to Thursday the 27th, the swell is small and the wind is all over the place. Not worth dragging your board out.
Now, the first real window opens on Tuesday the 1st of September. The afternoon goes glassy, and the swell jumps to 8ft from the SW. The energy is moderate at 872. It’s clean, but that 8ft is big, pushing into expert territory. The period is short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit dumpy, but for the experienced guys at Inch Reefs, this is a shot.
The absolute standout, though, is Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning brings a massive 16ft swell from the west with a long period of 11 seconds. The combined energy is a massive 6931, which is very strong. The wind is offshore from the ENE, clean and light. But – and this is a huge caveat – it’s predicted to be too big for this break. That’s a 16ft wave, only for the absolute best of the best. The afternoon is still huge at 15ft, with a cross-offshore breeze. Perfect conditions, but the size is just too much for almost everyone.
After that, the swell drops. Thursday the 3rd of September still has 8ft waves from the west, but the conditions are marginal. The real sweet spot for the less crazy crowd is Friday the 4th of September. The morning offers 6ft from the west, with a 10 second period, clean offshore winds from the NNE, and moderate energy (729). The wind is light, the waves are clean. That’s a solid, very good day for advanced surfers. Not for beginners, but for the crew that knows what they’re doing, it’s probably the best window of the whole run.
The weekend of the 5th and 6th of September falls away again, with poor conditions and a messy swell.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a bust. The second week has one day that’s too big, and one day that’s just right. The best bet is Friday morning the 4th of September at Inch Reefs. It’s a consistent, exposed point break that can handle a good swell. The crowds are sometimes an issue, but with that quality and that wind, it’ll be worth the company. The spot is fairly consistent, so it’s not a fluke.
