The Lowdown

Alright, crew, Rusty here. Let’s cut to it. The next couple weeks at Inch Reefs are a bit of a tease. We start off small and clean, but the real action is a solid pulse of swell that hits at the very end of the month. It’s a waiting game, but there’s a good one coming.

Water temp is around 64°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so you might get away with a little less rubber.

Right now, through the weekend and into Monday, it’s tiny. We’re talking ankle to knee-high slop, with weak wave energy around 26 to 81. The wind is light to moderate, with some glassy windows on Sunday morning and Saturday morning, but there’s nothing to ride. Don’t even bother waxing up.

Tuesday the 25th brings a small pulse, with waves around 3ft, still pretty weak at 186 energy. But it’s clean, with a light cross-offshore breeze. It’s rideable on a longboard, but you won't be getting barreled. That’s about your best bet for the first half of the week.

Wednesday and Thursday are a write-off. The swell drops off completely, and the wind goes onshore and cross-shore, chopping everything up. Save your energy.

Now, here’s the good part. Starting Saturday the 29th, the swell starts building. We see it jump to around 6ft on Saturday afternoon, with energy climbing to 302. The wind is light and onshore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but the ocean is waking up. Sunday the 30th brings 6ft to 7ft waves, with energy up to 593. Still a bit of onshore wind, but the size is there.

The standout, though, is Monday the 31st. Early morning, we’ve got glassy 8ft surf out of the west, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is at 817, which is strong. This is the best window. A proper-sized, clean wave at a point break, and the swell direction is right. But, and this is a big but, by the afternoon, the swell jumps to a solid 10ft with energy over 1000. That’s a lot of water. This is expert territory only, and it might be too much for this break. If you’re not solid, give it a miss. For the experienced crew, this is the day.

After that, the swell fades back down through the start of September, with smaller surf and wind turning more cross and onshore, so we’ll be back to ordinary conditions.

So, the best of the bunch is Monday morning, the 31st – that’s the one. A clean, proper-sized swell at the reef. The rest is either small, messy, or too big. Keep your eyes on that forecast.

Rusty.
