The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this stretch coming up is a bit of a slow burn. Most of the next two weeks are tiny, weak, and honestly not worth paddling out for. The water is sitting at a very unusual 66° right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re waiting for something to happen.
There’s nothing on offer for the first week and a half. We’re talking Wednesday the 15th right through to the evening of Wednesday the 22nd – just a whole lot of flat, small, ordinary conditions. A few sessions have a little knee-high slop, but the combined energy is almost always under 100 (weak), and the wind is mostly cross-off, so it’s not even clean enough to be fun. You’re better off doing something else.
Then, finally, we get a glimmer. On Friday the 24th – that’s the standout. Inch Reefs starts to show some life. The morning has a clean 3 ft swell from the west, with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 219 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a light offshore from the NNE – that’s glassy, clean conditions for a point break. The afternoon holds a bit more size at 3 ft, same 11-second period, energy up to 249. The wind swings more northerly and picks up to 9 mph, but it’s still cross-off, so it should stay workable. This is a spot that’s exposed to the SW, and we’re getting a solid W swell, so it’s hitting the right angle. It’s an advanced wave, and it can get crowded sometimes, so keep your eyes open. The wave quality is looking good, and that 11-second period means proper groundswell with some push. For a long run of nothing, this is the one.
After that, Saturday the 25th drops back to 3 ft with a 9-second period and energy around 120 (still moderate), but the wind is more cross-off and the swell is a bit lumpier. It’s surfable, but nothing special. Sunday the 26th and beyond fade out again, with wind turning onshore from the south by the 28th and 29th, so that’s game over.
If you’ve got a kite, maybe the later days with stronger wind and small swell could be more interesting, but for a paddle, your window is narrow. Friday the 24th is the day to mark.
Rusty.
