The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at Inch Reefs over the next couple of weeks.
First off, the water temp is about normal for the season, nothing to write home about. But for the next week or so, it’s a slow start. From Wednesday the 19th through to Saturday the 22nd, you’re looking at a dead zone. Tiny, weak swell and a cross-onshore breeze that’s just churning it up. Not worth the drive.
We finally get a little life on Sunday the 23rd. The wind goes glassy in the morning, and we’ve got a tiny 1ft groundswell from the SW with a 14-second period. The combined energy is weak (65). It’s small and clean – surfable but nothing to write home about. A good day for a longboard if you just need to get out.
Monday the 24th is much the same – glassy in the morning with that same 1ft SW groundswell and a 14-second period. Still weak energy (76). It’s a long-period groundswell, so you’ll get some nice shape but long waits between sets.
Then Tuesday the 25th brings a real change. We get a 8ft WSW swell rolling in by the morning, with moderate energy (1154). But the wind is a cross-onshore from the SSE at 12 mph, making it choppy and messy. That’s too big for beginners and the quality is poor due to the wind.
The real highlight, and this is a big one, is Sunday the 30th of August. The models are showing a massive 20ft swell from the W with a 12-second period. The energy is extreme (10251), and the wind is cross-offshore and clean. This is a serious, expert-only groundswell. That size at a point break like Inch Reefs means long, powerful lines, but you need to know what you’re doing. Crowds are possible here, and on a day like that, it’ll be a spectacle.
Monday the 31st drops to a still-enormous 15ft, but the wind swings onshore and ruins it. The rest of the first week of September looks messy with onshore winds, though there are a few pulses of 7ft to 8ft swell. The wind just doesn’t cooperate.
So, the best bets: Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th for small, clean, glassy waves. The big standout is Sunday the 30th of August – a massive, clean, expert-only groundswell at Inch Reefs. It’s a long way out, so keep your fingers crossed and check back closer to the day.
Rusty.
