The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our local patch. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming our way, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s break it down.
The first week and a half is looking pretty flat and ordinary. Don’t be in a rush to wax up just yet. There’s a big gap from now until the 23rd of July where the surf is just not worth the paddle. We’re talking barely a ripple most days, with the odd bit of knee-high slop that’s more frustrating than fun. The energy is weak, and the conditions are just plain average.
The one spot we’re looking at is Inch Reefs, a point break that needs a solid SW swell to really fire. Right now, the water is a balmy 66°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s really unusual, you’ll be in boardshorts for sure.
From Tuesday the 14th through to the 22nd, it’s a desert. The 14th has a tiny 2ft W swell, but it’s so underwhelming. The energy is weak (155), and the wind is a light offshore which is a positive, but there’s just no power behind it. Wednesday and Thursday the 15th and 16th are even smaller, with the swell dropping to 1ft. The whole week is a write-off, with the 18th and 19th seeing the swell bottom out at 0.7ft and 0.3ft. The energy is almost non-existent, in the 20s and 30s. It’s a tough stretch.
Now, here’s the standout. Mark your calendars for Thursday the 23rd of July. The morning is the real deal. A solid 6ft W swell is pumping in with a nice 13-second period, offering a ton of energy (1058). The wind is glassy, dead calm. The water is still that warm anomaly. This is proper clean, powerful surf. It’s over 5ft, so it’s not for the groms, but for any experienced surfer, this is a great session. The afternoon holds a bit of size at 7ft, but the wind goes cross-shore, messing up the perfection.
After that, things settle down again into the weekend of the 24th, but the week of the 27th and 28th looks promising. The 27th has a 8ft WNW swell on Monday morning. That’s a big one, over 8ft, so that’s expert territory only. The energy is strong (811), and the wind is light, so it’ll be a bumpy, powerful beast. The 26th of July is a softer entry, with a 4ft to 4ft W swell and glassy conditions, making for a much more comfortable session.
So, the best bet is the 23rd of July at Inch Reefs. That Thursday morning is the clear winner. The 27th is for the brave, and the 26th is a solid fallback. It’s a long wait, but it’s worth it.
Rusty.
