The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’re looking at the coming weeks, and for the first chunk, it’s a bit of a flat spell. The first real surf on offer hits us on Saturday, 1st August, so we’re looking at a solid stretch of no action from now until then. No point pretending otherwise.
The standout spot on the menu is Inch Reefs. This is a point break, exposed to a SW swell, and it’s a fairly consistent wave for the advanced crew. The water is running at 65°F right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 5°F above the long-term average, so you might not even need a full wetsuit.
The real action kicks off Saturday morning, 1st August. The swell will be pushing in from the west at 5ft, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a moderate energy swell, with the combined energy reading 413 – a solid, surfable pulse. The wind will be light from the NNE, keeping things clean. By the afternoon, the swell bumps up to 6ft from the west, period still 9 seconds, and the energy climbs to 455. Wind swings around to the NNW at 9 mph, still cross-off and clean. This is the best of the bunch. It’s a proper wave, but nothing too crazy for a strong intermediate.
Sunday, 2nd August, the swell starts to back off a little. Morning sees a 4ft west-southwest swell, period dropping to 8 seconds, energy at 246. Wind is light from the north at 9 mph, cross-off, so it’s still clean. It’s a fun option, but not as punchy as Saturday. The afternoon drops to 3ft, same direction, and the energy is down to 151 – ordinary but rideable. By Monday, 3rd August, we’re down to 2ft and 2ft, so it’s fading fast.
The standout here is Saturday, 1st August. The swell is just over 5ft, so it’s a bit much for true beginners, but it’s a very solid day for anyone with a bit of experience. The swell direction is a touch west of optimum, which is SW, but it’s still working. And because the break is a point, that longer period (9 seconds) will wrap in nicely, giving you some good lines. Crowds are possible here, so expect some company.
Alright, that’s the skinny. Keep your eyes on that Saturday. Rusty out.
