The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at Inch Reefs.
Right now, things are flat to tiny. The first few days of the outlook are a write-off—Saturday the 22nd through Monday the 24th only offer ankle-snappers around 0.7ft to 1ft with basically no energy (26 to 81). The water is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Not that it matters much with these conditions.
Tuesday the 25th morning wakes up a bit. A 4ft swell from the west with a short period of 9 seconds rolls in, and the wave energy jumps to 218 (moderate). The wind is light and offshore, making things clean. It’s surfable but not a standout.
On Thursday the 27th morning we get the first proper moment. Light offshore wind from NE, a 4ft W/NW swell with a 10-second period, and combined energy of 261. This is a clean, workable window. The break handles SW swell best, and this is close. A worthy window for the advanced crew, and the crowds can show up “sometimes”, so keep an eye out.
After that, things get ugly. A long stretch of poor conditions sets in from Friday the 28th all the way through to the end of the outlook. There is a significant jump in swell size on September 2nd and 3rd—hitting 6ft up to 12ft—but the wind is consistently cross-to-onshore and strong, up to 22 mph. The wave energy climbs into the thousands (668 up to 3103), but the quality is shot. That kind of power with chunky, windy conditions would be more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers. For experts only, and even then, not clean.
The standout in the whole 16-day stretch is Thursday morning, August 27th at Inch Reefs: clean, waist-to-chest high west-northwest swell, light offshore wind, moderate energy. If you’re chasing something, that’s the one to pencil in.
Beyond that, the second week holds bigger numbers but rougher conditions. No true clean windows to recommend.
Rusty.
