The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the local lineup. Let's have a proper look at what's in store for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – we're in for a long, slow grind before anything decent shows up. The first surfable waves I can see are tiny, weak, and not worth paddling out for. We're looking at a solid stretch of days where the swell is just too small, the conditions are ordinary, or both. For the next week or so, you're better off waxing your longboard and just staring at the horizon.
The first real glimmer of hope arrives on Tuesday, August 25th. The morning at Inch Reefs shows a bit of life with a 4ft swell from the west, period around 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at (214), and with a light easterly breeze keeping things clean, it'll be surfable, but honestly, it's nothing to write home about. It's a "get the cobwebs out" kind of session.
Now, listen up, because this is the one to circle on the calendar. Wednesday, September 2nd is the standout. We get a solid 8ft west swell rolling in, and the energy reading jumps to a massive (1122) – that's a whole lot of power. The morning glass-off with a light offshore breeze from the NNE is about as good as it gets for clean conditions. This is excellent surf, but I gotta warn ya – 8ft at Inch Reefs is expert territory. This is not a day for beginners. The afternoon pushes even bigger to 10ft, but honestly, that might be too much for the break itself, even if the conditions are clean.
The action keeps going into Thursday, September 3rd. We've still got plenty of west swell – 8ft in the morning and 7ft in the afternoon. The combined energy is still very strong (1061 and 809). With glassy conditions and zero wind, this is another excellent day for experienced surfers only. If you've got the skills, this is the run.
After that, the swell drops off a cliff again. The first week of September fizzles out with tiny waves and then gets blown out by strong southerly winds. By the second weekend (September 5th and 6th), we see big swell again (8ft to 8ft), but it's paired with howling onshore or cross-off winds, making it a complete mess. I wouldn't bother.
The Bottom Line: It's a long wait, but the first few days of September are the real deal for the experienced crew. Don't sleep on the 2nd and 3rd if you can handle it. For everyone else, it's a waiting game.
