Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Alright mate, Rusty here. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag for this region. The whole period kicks off with a classic case of “if only the wind was right.” We’ve got some swell, but the onshore breeze is going to ruin it for the first few days. After that, there’s a promising run of cleaner conditions, but the size does fade away quite a bit into the second week. For the real standouts, you need to be looking at a few specific mornings.
So, starting from Saturday the 4th of July, it’s a write-off, to be honest. There’s a W/SW swell pushing 5ft to 6ft, but it’s all blown out by that onshore wind. Forget it. Sunday the 5th is a little smaller but still onshore, so no go. Monday the 6th drops off to 4ft and the wind is still messy – not worth a paddle.
Now, the tide turns on Tuesday the 7th. That morning you’ve got a glassy start at Inch Reefs. The swell has dropped to 4ft from the WNW with a 10-second period, and with the wind being glass, that’s clean conditions. The swell energy is moderate (321). This is a solid early morning window. The afternoon adds a bit of a cross-shore ripple, so it’s not as perfect.
Wednesday the 8th is a repeat of the glassy morning trick, but with a smaller 4ft W swell (energy 210). Clean but a bit weaker.
The best of the bunch looks like Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th. Thursday morning at Inch Reefs has a glassy start again, with the swell coming back up to a clean 5ft from the west (energy 398). That’s a fun, solid size for a mid-week paddle. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-offshore wind.
Then, Friday the 10th of July is the true standout. The morning has a nice 5ft west swell, but the period stretches out to 11 seconds, giving it an extra bit of push and shape (energy 562). With that light cross-offshore breeze, it’s going to be clean and lined up. That is your best session for the whole outlook – get on it if you can. The afternoon gets a bit choppier with a stronger cross-shore breeze.
After Friday, the surf takes a holiday. Saturday the 11th is a mess with rain and dropping swell. The rest of that week and into the next is mostly very small, with waist-high dribble and weak energy. For instance, the morning of 13th July has 3ft, and 15th July has 2ft – it’s just ordinary surf. You’re looking at a long stretch of days with nothing much to offer, especially from the 18th of July onwards where the waves just fizzle out completely.
So, to sum it up: the early onshore stuff is a waste of time, but you get a nice run of glassy mornings from the 7th to the 10th. The absolute winner is Friday the 10th of July. After that, it goes flat for over a week, which is pretty normal for this area when the pattern changes.
Rusty.
