Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Annascaul Rivermouth. It’s a very consistent, sheltered spot down here, and right now the water is running at 63°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – about 4° above average, so it’s already a little special.
The forecast starts quiet, with a bit of a slow burn. Monday the 6th has a weak 4ft swell out of the west, but the wind is onshore and the surf quality is poor. That carries on through the week. Tuesday morning the 7th shows a slight improvement – 4ft from the west-northwest, period around 10 seconds, and glassy conditions – but it’s only surfable, nothing to get excited about (combined energy 336). The rest of Tuesday and Wednesday stay ordinary, with light cross-onshore breezes messing things up.
Thursday the 9th isn’t much better – still poor conditions with onshore and cross-onshore wind. Then, on Friday morning the 10th, we get a proper window. The swell is 4ft from the west-northwest, period 11 seconds, and a light offshore wind from the north-northeast is blowing. That’s clean, with moderate energy (447) – it’s the best of the first week, but still only a modest standout. By afternoon, it drops right off.
After Friday, it goes flat for days. Saturday the 11th through to the following Thursday morning, there’s almost nothing worth paddling out for – tiny swell, long-period ghost swells from the southwest, but tiny energy. That’s a solid 5-day gap with no real surf.
Thursday afternoon the 16th, the ocean wakes up. We get 6ft from the west-southwest, period 9 seconds, with a cross-offshore wind and clean conditions – combined energy jumps to 560. That’s a good, solid little push. Friday morning the 17th keeps the momentum with 5ft from the west-southwest, glassy conditions, but the period is short (8 seconds) and the quality is only ordinary.
Now, here’s the real standout. Sunday the 20th into Tuesday the 21st – this is the one to circle on the calendar. Sunday morning glassy, 12ft from the west, period 9 seconds. That’s big – expert territory – with combined energy over 1800. It’s glassy, clean, and the wind is light from the east. Then Monday the 21st absolutely cooks: 12ft from the west again, period 10 seconds, offshore cross-off wind from the east, and combined energy over 2600. That’s excellent for experienced surfers. The wave quality is excellent, and the crowd is only sometimes, so you might have some company but not a circus.
So, the best of the forecast: wait for the huge pulse on the 20th and 21st. That’s big, clean, powerful west swell with offshore wind. Not for beginners, but if you’ve got the skills, it’ll be a session to remember. The rest of the time, it’s mostly small or poor. Keep an eye on those dates – forecasts can change, but right now that’s the gem.
– Rusty
