Table - best surf conditions forecast for Annascaul Rivermouth over the next 16 days.
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s be straight with you—this is a lean stretch for Annascaul Rivermouth. Over the next 16 days, there’s no standout swell that’ll get the heart pumping. The first few days are flat, barely a ripple. You’re looking at a long gap of tiny, weak surf through the middle of the week, with the first real mention of anything surfable not showing up until late in the period. The water’s sitting at 65°, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year—like a few degrees above average, so you’ll be comfortable in a shorty or even a spring suit.
Monday 13 July is a write-off. We’re talking 0.2m (0.7ft) to 0.3m (1ft) soup from the south-southwest, period around 19 to 20 seconds, but combined energy is only 51 to 105 (moderate at best in the afternoon). Wind is light offshore from the northeast, so it’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. This pattern holds through Tuesday 14 July and Wednesday 15 July—swell hovers around 0.4m (1ft) to 0.7m (2ft), period drops to 9 or 10 seconds, energy stays weak (82 to 153). The wind stays cross-off or light offshore, keeping the surface glassy, but you’d be chasing shadows.
Thursday 16 July morning brings a tiny bump of 0.4m (1ft) from the southwest at 14 seconds, with near-calm winds—clean but still puny. Friday 17 July and Saturday 18 July are more of the same: 0.2m (0.7ft) to 0.5m (2ft), period 8 to 12 seconds, energy in the teens to 60s. Sunday 19 July is dead flat, with next to no energy. Monday 20 July offers a slight lift to 0.5m (2ft) to 0.6m (2ft) from the west, period 10 seconds, but still poor conditions across the board.
Now, things start to look a little more interesting around Tuesday 21 July. Swell picks up to 0.8m (3ft) to 1.0m (3ft) from the west, period 9 to 10 seconds, and combined energy climbs to 120 to 185. But the wind swings onshore from the west, making it messy. The surf quality is still flagged as poor. Wednesday 22 July and Thursday 23 July keep the swell around 0.9m (3ft) to 2.2m (7ft), but the wind is cross-onshore to onshore, with moderate breezes up to 25 km/h (16 mph). The 23rd afternoon actually pushes 2.2m (7ft) from the west at 8 seconds, with energy hitting 649—that’s moderate-to-strong, but the short period and cross-onshore wind make it sloppy. This setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The best chance for a surf comes on Friday 24 July morning. Swell is 1.7m (6ft) from the west, period 8 seconds, energy 390 (moderate), and the wind is glassy—light southerly, almost dead calm. The conditions are described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” so it’s not a classic, but it’s the cleanest window we get. For a sheltered spot like Annascaul Rivermouth, which is very consistent but needs a clean offshore, this is the only real shot. The swell direction from the west is not ideal for optimum from the southwest, but with glassy conditions, you might find a few lumpy ones. It’s a bit big for beginners at 1.7m (6ft), but okay for intermediates. Crowds are possible here sometimes.
After that, Saturday 25 July drops back to 0.2m (0.7ft), and the rest of the run into the end of the month stays small and weak, with Sunday 27 July and Monday 28 July showing 1.1m (4ft) to 1.5m (5ft) but with onshore winds and choppy conditions. The gap of good surf is huge—basically, you’ve got a single window on Friday 24 July morning, and then it’s back to nothing. For this area, a blank run like this is normal when the swell is sheltered and the direction’s not right. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, don’t hold your breath.
