The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Annascaul Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the honest truth: we’ve got a long, dry spell ahead. Don’t expect to be waxing up for a proper session for a while. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 64°, which is a nice little bonus for the long wait.
The forecast is showing very poor conditions right through until the end of August. The swell is tiny, the wind is all over the shop, and there’s nothing to get excited about. You’ll be staring at flat, clean water for most of the first week, with a bit of a lift on the 25th (Tuesday) where we see a 3ft swell from the west with a 9-second period, but the energy is only moderate (186) and the wind is cross-off. It’s still a no-go for a proper surf. That pattern of poor surf continues day after day, with wind and swell never lining up.
The one standout that finally breaks the drought is on Monday, the 31st of August. The morning session is the best we’re going to get. Glassy conditions with a light air from the north-west, and a solid 8ft swell from the west rolling in. That’s proper groundswell territory, but with an 8-second period, it’s a bit short and bumpy, so it’ll be a bit of a lumpy beast. The energy is very strong (817), so you’ll want to be an intermediate or above – this is not for beginners. The crowd is listed as "sometimes", so you might have a few mates out, but it won’t be a circus. The afternoon sees that swell jump to 10ft, which is expert-only territory, and the wind turns cross-onshore, making it a messy, powerful affair.
The real kicker is that from the 31st, it quickly drops off again. The 1st of September is a write-off with cross-shore wind and a dropping swell. The rest of the first week of September is a return to the same small, unappealing conditions we saw at the start.
So, there you have it. A long, flat run, then one morning of proper, powerful, glassy waves on the 31st of August. That’s your window. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but as it stands, it’s a one-day wonder.
Rusty.
