The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’re looking at a pretty grim stretch ahead for Annascaul Rivermouth, so let’s be straight with it. This break is a sheltered spot, and over the next 16 days, it’s going to be a real struggle to find anything worthwhile.
The water temperature is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so if you do get in, it won’t be a shock to the system.
The first days are a write-off. Sunday the 23rd through Monday the 24th are tiny, with pathetic 1ft and 0.7ft swells from the southwest. The energy is weak (63 and 35), and the conditions are flat and poor. For the next few days, we see a slight bump in size on Tuesday the 25th morning with a 4ft west swell, but the period is a short, weak 9 seconds, and the wind is just cross-offshore. It’s “surfable” but very ordinary. The energy is moderate (213), but don’t expect much.
Thursday the 27th morning offers another 4ft swell from the west-northwest with a 10-second period and clean offshore wind from the east-northeast at 9 mph. The energy is moderate (240), and it’s the best-looking session in the first week, but it’s still a long way from good. After that, it’s back to a long, dry gap. From Friday the 28th through to the end of August, the swell drops to near zero, and the wind is all over the place—cross, cross-on, and onshore. The energy values are tiny, often single digits. There’s nothing to recommend.
Moving into September, it gets worse before it gets better. The 1st and 2nd of September bring onshore winds and messy, poor surf. The swell on the 1st morning hits 5ft from the west-northwest with a short 7-second period, but the wind is straight onshore from the southwest at 9 mph. The energy is moderate (266), but it’s blown out. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The real stand-out event, if you can call it that, is a big swell arriving on the morning of Friday, September 4th. We’re looking at a 7ft swell from the west-southwest with a 10-second period. The energy is very strong (1102). Here’s the problem: it’s blowing a fresh onshore breeze from the west-southwest at 19 mph. This is too big for beginners and only for experts, and the wind is going to ruin it. It’s a messy, blown-out mess. The afternoon is slightly smaller at 5ft, but the wind picks up to 28 mph. Hard pass.
The only glimmer of hope comes on Saturday, September 5th afternoon. The swell drops to a clean 4ft from the west with a 9-second period, and more importantly, the wind goes glassy, dropping to zero from the northwest. The energy is moderate (303), and the conditions are glassy. It’s the only “surfable” session in the entire second week, but it’s still very ordinary. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few others with the same idea.
After that, the 6th and 7th are a write-off again with strong winds and lumpy, poor surf. The Monday afternoon of the 7th shows a tiny 0.3ft swell with a long 12-second period, but the energy is next to nothing (12), and it’s crossed up.
So, the honest truth: there is no standout session in this 16-day window. The best on offer is the Thursday morning of the 27th of August for a clean, average wave, or that glassy Saturday afternoon of September 5th. Both are just “surfable” and not worth the effort unless you’re desperate. For a break that’s usually very consistent, this is a poor run. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but right now, it’s time to wax the board and wait.
Rusty.
