The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. This is a tough one to write, but I’ll be straight with you.
Right now, through the entire 16-day window, we’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch. The only break that’s even showing up on the charts is Annascaul Rivermouth, but it’s a frustrating one. This spot is a sheltered river mouth, very consistent, but the swell just isn’t cooperating. For the first ten days, from Sunday the 19th of July right through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny—mostly 0.7ft to 2ft from the west. The wind is actually clean, often light offshore from the NNE, but with that tiny swell, it’s just not worth the paddle. The combined wave energy is weak, barely hitting double digits (14, 21, 97…), which is basically flat. The water temperature is sitting at 66°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than normal for this time of year—feels like a warm bath, but don’t let that fool you, there’s nothing to ride.
There’s a long gap of nothing until we hit Friday the 31st of July. That morning, the forecast shows a sudden jump to 4ft from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy jumps to 256 (moderate), but the wind is onshore from the SW, blowing straight into the break. That’s going to chop it up real bad. The afternoon is even worse—no swell and more onshore wind. The next day, Saturday the 1st of August, the swell drops back to 2ft, with a clean cross-offshore wind, but the energy is weak again (45).
The only real standout, and I’m calling it now, is Monday the 3rd of August. That morning, the Rivermouth is showing 5ft from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is up to 302 (moderate) and, for the first time, the wind is glassy. That’s right—dead flat, glassy conditions. That’s the only window where you’ll find something rideable, but be warned: 5ft at a river mouth can be a bit of a lumpy closeout, and the swell period is short, so it won't have much push. The afternoon sees the wind shift onshore and ruin it.
Bottom line: If you’re desperate, be there first thing Monday the 3rd of August. Otherwise, the next two weeks are a write-off. It’s a classic case of a sheltered spot waiting for a proper swell. The forecasts can change, but for now, leave the boards in the car.
