The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days for Annascaul Rivermouth are a real mixed bag, and mostly a tough watch. We’ve got a long stretch of weak, messy surf ahead, with only a couple of windows that might get a surfer out of bed. The water is sitting at 65°F, which is a solid 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year – you’ll be leaving the 4/3 at home, that’s for sure.
The outlook starts now, but there’s nothing worth paddling out for until Wednesday, 26 August. We’ve got a big gap of almost a week of poor conditions. The early days are dominated by small, short-period slop and cross-onshore winds – Tuesday morning throws up a 6ft swell from the WNW, but with a period of just 8 seconds and a cross-on wind, it’s a choppy, ugly mess. The combined energy is moderate, hitting 467, but it’s just not clean enough. Then it all drops to tiny 0.7ft to 2ft leftovers with cold cross-off winds through to the weekend.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday, 26 August morning. The morning sees a 5ft swell from the W, period 9 seconds, and a clean cross-off breeze from the ESE. The combined energy is moderate at 341, and while it’s not pumping, it’s at least surfable. The afternoon is similar with a light NNW wind. If you’re desperate, that’s your window.
The standout of the whole run is Thursday, 27 August morning. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the W, period 10 seconds, with a light N wind keeping it clean. The combined energy ramps up to 446 and the comment says “expect good surf conditions” – that’s the best we’re going to get. It’s a solid groundswell, and the offshore wind is a major positive. The break is sheltered, so it’ll handle that swell nicely. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so a Thursday morning might be your best bet to dodge the pack.
After that, it fades fast. The 28th drops to tiny 0.3ft surf, and the following days are mostly tiny, short-period slop, glassy but flat. By the 1st of September, we get a 4ft swell from the WSW, but it’s a terrible 6-second period and onshore wind – that’s kite stuff, not paddle.
So, the bottom line: if you’re keen, aim for the 27th of August morning. That’s the one true standout. The rest of the run is mostly a write-off, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
Rusty.
