The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The next 16 days are looking pretty bleak for a proper paddle. We’ve got one tiny window of surfable waves, but the rest is a long, quiet stretch.
Let’s start with what’s on offer. The only spot that’s even showing signs of life is Annascaul Rivermouth. It’s a sheltered, intermediate break that’s very consistent when it gets swell, but it’s a sheltered spot, so it needs the right angle. The water is sitting at 66° right now, which is a solid 5° above the norm – much warmer than usual for this time of year, so you can leave the thick winter suit at home.
The run starts on Saturday morning, the 18th of July. It’s basically flat. We’re looking at a tiny 0.7ft swell from the SSW with a 13-second period, blown by a gentle offshore breeze from the NNE. The combined wave energy is a very weak 26. It’s clean, but honestly, it’s barely a ripple. The whole weekend and into the next week is just these tiny, insignificant pulses. The best of a bad bunch comes on Monday, the 20th of July, with a 2ft swell from the west, a 11-second period, and light offshore winds in the morning. The energy is still weak at 97. It’s the biggest we get, but it’s still poor surf.
After that, it’s a long, slow decline. From Tuesday the 21st right through to the 2nd of August, the numbers just drop off a cliff. We’re talking 0.3ft or nothing at all, with onshore and cross-onshore winds blowing the place out. The combined energy figures fall to single digits and zero. It’s a proper blank run. There is a glimmer on the very last day of the forecast, Sunday the 2nd of August, with a 3ft WNW swell showing up in the afternoon. The period is 11 seconds and the energy jumps to a moderate 153, with light offshore winds. That’s the best looking pulse in the whole outlook, but it’s two weeks away and the consistency is gone.
So, what’s the call? The standout window, if you can call it that, is Monday morning, the 20th of July at Annascaul Rivermouth. It’s the peak of the tiny run. The 2ft west swell with a light offshore breeze will be the cleanest waves we see. It’s small, it’s weak, but it’s the only show in town. For the rest of it, you’re looking at a lot of flat days. The forecasts can change, but right now, this is a dry spell.
Rusty.
