The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on offer for Annascaul Rivermouth over the next stretch.
Right from the get-go, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run. There’s no surf worth paddling for on Friday the 17th. The water’s sitting at a balmy 66°F, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year, but that’s about the only unusual thing. The swell’s tiny at 1ft, period’s short at 8 seconds, and the combined wave energy is weak (38). It’s just poor conditions.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are flat or close to it. You’re looking at days with zero energy in the water, so don’t bother. That gap of weak to no surf runs all the way through the middle of the following week.
The first slight flicker of hope shows up on Monday morning, July 20th. The swell bumps up a touch to 2ft from the west, with a longer 11-second period, giving us a combined energy of 97 (weak to moderate). The wind is light offshore from the NNE, which will keep it clean. But honestly, at that size, it’s barely a knee-high dribble. Not a standout.
From there, the pattern just repeats: tiny west swells, light offshore winds in the mornings, and every single record says “poor surf conditions.” The energy rarely cracks three digits. Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd, Thursday the 23rd – all the same story: small, weak, and underwhelming. Crowds are listed as “sometimes” for the break, but with waves like this, you won’t have to worry about company.
Towards the very end of the period, on July 28th and 29th, the swell finally gets a pulse. Tuesday afternoon, July 28th, we get 3ft from the west with a 9-second period and combined energy of 187 (moderate). That’s the biggest swell of the whole outlook. But the wind is a fresh cross-onshore from the west at 22 mph, making for lumpy, messy conditions. The swell is just under the 5ft mark, so it’s still fine for intermediates, but the wind will ruin it for a paddle surfer. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Wednesday morning, July 29th, is similar: 3ft, 10-second period, but with a strong cross-onshore breeze at 28 mph. The energy is moderate at 128, but again, it’s messy. Not a clean wave in sight.
After that, it fades back to tiny, weak swells with onshore winds through the 30th and 31st, and into the start of August.
The best on offer – and I say that with a heavy heart – is Monday morning, July 20th, if you’re desperate for a log or a longboard. The 2ft west swell (11-second period) with an offshore NNE breeze at 6 mph will be clean and glassy. It’s sheltered here at Annascaul Rivermouth, so the optimum SW direction isn't a perfect match, but the light offshore wind will make the most of what little there is. It’s the only window with clean conditions and a shred of energy. The other possibility is Tuesday afternoon, July 28th for the size, but only if you don’t mind the chop and are happy to be on a kite.
For the rest of it, honestly, save the petrol. The combined energy values are mostly two-digit numbers (weak) until that late July bump, and even then the wind destroys the quality. This spot is very consistent for the area, so it tends not to stay this poor for long, but right now, it’s a washout.
Stay patient,
Rusty.
