Right, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s in store for the next couple of weeks.
Look, I’ll be straight with you – this is a grim run. The only spot worth a mention is Crab Island, a heavy, advanced reef break that’s fairly consistent. But for the vast majority of this 16-day outlook, it’s just not happening. We’re looking at a solid run of no surf worth paddling out for, especially right through the first week and into the second.
From Saturday the 4th right through to Wednesday the 15th, it’s a complete write-off. The wind is never your friend – it’s cross-on, onshore, or just messy. The swell is there, but it’s all blown out and lumpy. The energy is moderate at best, with readings like 476 and 487 early on, but it’s all wasted. You’d be better off kiting here than surfing, especially with that strong onshore wind.
The only faint glimmer, and I mean faint, comes on Thursday the 9th in the morning. We get a tiny pulse of 3ft from the west, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE. It’s clean, but the energy is weak (129), and the swell is small. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Then again on Friday the 10th morning, it goes glassy from the NNE with a tiny 3ft west swell, energy down to 91. That’s a tiny window for a longboard or a foiler, but it’s not a standout.
Into the second week, Thursday the 16th and beyond sees the swell drop to nothing – 2ft, 1.0ft – with gusty, messy winds. The energy drops into the 20s and 50s. It’s dead.
If you’re keen, the only real chance is the Thursday morning (9th July) and the Friday morning (10th July) at Crab Island. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there. Don’t expect any crowds on those days – it’s so small and ordinary, you’ll have it to yourself.
Stay patient, lads. It’s a long flat spell.
Rusty.
