The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Clare. We're kicking off Thursday, July 16th, and honestly, it's a slow start. The first ten days are a write-off for any decent surf. There's nothing to get excited about with tiny, weak, and often messy conditions. But hold on, because the second week starts to show some promise, even if it's not perfect.
From Thursday, July 16th right through to the end of the month, we're looking at a long, dry spell. The swell is tiny, the energy is low, and the winds are mostly cross or onshore. It's a classic summer flat spell.
Now, let's talk about the light at the end of the tunnel. The real action starts to build around Saturday, July 26th. The swell picks up to 5 ft from the west, but the wind is onshore, making it a bit of a bumpy ride. The energy is ramping up though, with a combined energy of 356 on Sunday morning. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The standout window is Sunday, July 27th. We're seeing a 5 ft west swell with a solid 12-second period, giving it a combined energy of 668 – that's a proper pulse of energy. The wind is a light onshore, so it's not glassy, but it's workable. This is easily the best on offer, but with the onshore wind, it's not going to be perfect. It's a good, solid surf for those who are keen.
Monday, July 28th, is next in line. Swell drops a touch to 5 ft from the west, still with a decent 10-second period and energy of 432. The wind swings cross-onshore, which is a bit better than straight onshore, but it's still a little choppy.
For the rest of the run into the end of July and early August, the swell stays around the 3 ft to 4 ft mark, but the winds are strong and onshore. It's a tough call. The setup is too messy for a great paddle, but for those with a kite, it could be worth a look.
So, to bottom line it: The first week is a total dud. The best chance for a wave comes on Sunday, July 27th, with a solid 5 ft west swell and moderate energy. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only real game in town. Keep an eye on the forecasts, it might clean up on the day.
Rusty.
