The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the next 16 days at Crab Island are a tough watch. We’ve got a 9-day stretch of flat, poor, or blown-out junk before anything even remotely surfable shows up. The first real flicker of life comes on Monday the 24th of August, and even then, it’s only just making the grade. This is a reef that needs the right window, and the wind just isn’t playing ball for most of this run.
The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a little bonus for the rubber.
Monday 24th August – The first morning that’s worth a look. A clean, gentle offshore from the ESE, with a WNW swell of 3ft and a period of 11 seconds. That’s a groundswell, which is good for a reef – it’ll give you some shape. The combined energy is moderate (162). It’s not big, but it’s clean. It’s a 1 out of 10, but honestly, that’s the best we’ve got around here for a while. The afternoon gets messy with a stronger SE wind.
Tuesday 25th August – Similar story. Offshore E wind all day, 3ft WNW swell, period dropping to 9 seconds. Clean and surfable, but very ordinary. Energy is moderate (112 and 105). If you’re desperate for a paddle, this is the window.
Thursday 27th August – Swell kicks up to 6ft (WNW, 9 seconds), combined energy jumps to a strong 408. But the wind is a light cross-on from the NNW in the morning, turning into a moderate cross-on from the WNW in the afternoon. It’s going to be choppy and messy. That’s not a surf day – that’s a watch-from-the-beach day.
Friday 28th August – Strong onshore wind from the WNW, 19 mph. Swell is 8ft, period 8 seconds, energy is very strong (694). For the experienced crew only, and even then, the wind is going to ruin it. This is more of a kite-surfing situation than a paddle-surfing one.
Sunday 30th August – The best day of the entire run. A clean, cross-off breeze from the SE, 4ft swell from the WSW (8 seconds), and combined energy of 216 (moderate). The forecast actually says “expect good surf conditions” – that’s a rarity here. It’s the only morning in the whole 16 days that gets a 2 out of 10. The afternoon turns onshore, so get on it early.
Monday 31st August – Swell is up to 7ft (W, 8 seconds), energy is very strong (610). But it’s a rainy, onshore morning, and the afternoon is only marginally better with a cross-on wind. This is expert-only territory, and it’s not clean.
After that, it fades fast. The first week of September is a mess of onshore or cross-shore winds, dropping swell, and energy levels that barely register. A couple of days in early September have a 15-second period, but the swell is tiny (0.3ft) – that’s just a long-period bump with no power.
So, the standout is Sunday 30th August morning – get that tide right, and you’ll have the cleanest, most fun little waves of the whole forecast. The backup is Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th for a clean, small paddle. Otherwise, it’s a long stretch of waiting.
Rusty.
