Table - best surf conditions forecast for Crab Island over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. I’m going to level with you right off the bat: this is going to be a tough stretch. We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple for days on end.
We start with a bit of activity on Wednesday, July 8th, but it's pretty ordinary. The swell is running about 4ft from the West with a period around 9 seconds. The problem is the wind. It's going to be a light cross-onshore, which is just enough to mess up the surface. The combined swell energy is moderate at 207 for Wednesday morning. It's one of those days you check the forecast and decide to stay in bed. The water temp is sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 61°, but honestly, you won't be thinking about that because the surf is poor. This same average quality drags on through Thursday, July 9th, with similar size and wind.
By Friday, July 10th, things get smaller. The swell drops to a pathetic 2ft Friday morning and the period stretches a bit to 11 seconds, which is better shape, but the size just isn't there. The energy plummets to 209, and we’re into marginal territory.
Then the real lull hits. From Saturday, July 12th, all the way through the next week, we are looking at a dead zone. The swell heights drop below 3ft, often down to 0.7 or 1.0ft, with combined energy values as low as 9. It's completely flat. For the next six or seven days, you'd be pushing a floaty around more than surfing. There's just nothing on offer. The wind turns offshore and clean from the ENE, which is normally a dream, but with no swell, it’s just a waste.
The first sign of life comes almost a week later, on Sunday, July 19th. The swell finally picks back up, reaching about 5ft from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy jumps up to 270 early in the day, which is a solid improvement. But here’s the kicker—the wind goes onshore from the NW in the afternoon, getting stronger and boosting the energy to 412, but it’s messy. The morning might be your only window, and even then, it’s a 5ft wave on a short period. For an advanced spot like Crab Island (Clare), a reef break that’s fairly consistent, that size is manageable, but it’s nothing to write home about. It’s a small window after a long flat spell.
So, if I have to pick a standout, it’s that Sunday, July 19th morning session. It’s the only time the swell gets over 3ft and the wind is still cross-off before it gets ugly. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath. The rest of the 16 days are a write-off.
This is Rusty, signing off.
