The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's look at the surf ahead.
Alright, straight up – this is a tough run for the next 16 days. We're looking at a long stretch of predominantly poor surf conditions, with only a couple of brief windows where you might get a wave. The water is sitting at 63°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the wetsuit might be a little more comfortable than usual.
The first real chance to get wet doesn't come until Monday, the 24th of August. On Monday morning, we've got a 2 ft swell from the WNW with a long 12-second period, giving us a moderate wave energy of 143. The wind is light and cross-offshore, which will keep the surface clean. It's surfable, but the conditions are described as very ordinary. It's not a standout, but it's the best we've seen for a week.
Then, the best of the whole run finally shows up on Tuesday, the 25th of August. Tuesday morning is the pick of the period. The swell from the WSW is 5 ft with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a moderate 334. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the ENE, promising clean conditions. This is the only time we get a "good surf conditions" rating, so if you want a wave, that Tuesday morning at Crab Island is your target. The swell direction is from the WSW, which is a bit off the optimal W, but it's still your best bet. Expect crowds to be possible here.
After that, it's a long goodbye. The wind gets messy again, and the swell becomes inconsistent and weak. From Wednesday the 26th onwards, the forecasts are all poor surf conditions with onshore or cross-shore winds. The second week is a write-off, with no real standouts to speak of. The swell energy drops right off, and the wind never cooperates. It's a blank run, and for this area, that's not unusual.
So, to sum it up: if you're keen, make a move for Tuesday morning, the 25th of August. It's a one-hit wonder.
Rusty.
