Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
Honestly, mate, it’s a tough stretch ahead. For the next 16 days, there’s no proper surf on offer. The whole period is a write-off for a decent paddle. The first few days, from Monday the 6th through to Wednesday the 15th, are just a long run of poor surf conditions with onshore and cross-onshore winds messing up any chance of clean waves. The swell is small and weak, with period under 8 seconds, and the combined energy is mostly under 200, so nothing with any punch.
There’s a brief moment on Friday the 10th, in the morning, where it gets glassy. The swell is tiny at 2 ft from the west, 11-second period, and the combined energy is 175. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The wind is glassy, so it’ll look calm, but you’re not getting much to ride. It’s the only morning that even rates a mention.
After that, the wind swings cross-offshore from the NNE, but the swell drops right off. By the weekend of the 12th, we’re looking at 1 ft to 2 ft waves with almost no energy. The 13th and 14th have a tiny blip of 2 ft to 2 ft swell from the west, with a long period of 12 to 13 seconds, but the combined energy is only 44 to 110—weak, gutless stuff. The afternoons are clean, but you’re basically floating on a lake.
Then around the 18th and 19th, the swell picks up to 5 ft to 6 ft from the WNW, but the period drops to 7 seconds, and the wind is howling onshore or cross-onshore at 18 to 25 mph. That’s a messy, choppy mess. The combined energy gets up to 285, but it’s all wind and chop. That setup would be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing at Crab Island.
The 20th and 21st keep the same story: 5 ft to 6 ft swell, 6 to 8 seconds, cross-onshore winds, and combined energy in the 130 to 363 range. It’s strong, but ugly. Not worth a paddle.
Crab Island is a reef, fairly consistent, exposed to the west which is the optimum direction, but in this window, it’s just not happening. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
So, the long and short of it: no standout days. The best you’ll get is a glassy, weak morning on the 10th, but it’s not worth getting excited about. The rest is blown out or flat. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d leave the board at home.
Rusty.
