Table - best surf conditions forecast for Crab Island over the next 16 days.
Rusty here again. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Crab Island in terms you can feel.
We’ve got a long flat spell to start. From Saturday the 11th of July, the swell is tiny at about 2ft from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is cross-off from the northeast at 12 mph. The energy is low at 79. It stays weak through Sunday and Monday. Monday morning the 13th, it drops to 0.7ft, with energy down to 25. You are better off doing anything else.
That stretch of poor waves goes on for days. The first hint of something you could actually ride comes Tuesday afternoon the 14th of July. We get 2ft of west swell at 10 seconds, with 62 energy and an offshore wind. The report calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions”. That is the highlight of the first week.
From there, it is just small, wind-affected junk until Tuesday the 21st of July. The swell jumps up to 6ft from the west, period around 7-8 seconds, and the energy hits 330. The problem is the wind is blowing straight onshore from the west at 12-19 mph. That wind is strong enough to make it messy. It looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
That onshore wind gets worse on Wednesday the 22nd of July, with the wind at 22 mph and energy reaching 439. The wave size is there but the quality is not.
The one real window pops up on Thursday the 23rd of July. The swell is 5ft from the west at 9 seconds, and the energy is at 356. The wind goes light from the north-northwest in the morning, just a light cross-shore. That morning is the only time everything comes together for a clean session. It is an expert-only kind of size, but if you know what you are doing, this is the one.
After that, another pulse comes through Saturday the 25th of July: 7ft to 8ft from the west-northwest, with massive energy (600 to 897), but it is blown out by strong cross-onshore winds. Too big for beginners and too windy for good surfing.
So, there is one morning – Thursday the 23rd of July – that could be worth the wait. The rest of the time, it is flat or blown out. For the kite crew, the onshores in the third week are worth noting, but for surfing, it is slim pickings.
Rusty.
