The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks. Right now, it’s a real quiet start, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing much on the cards.
Poldhu Cove is a fairly exposed spot that picks up a SW swell best, but it’s been inconsistent lately. The water is sitting at 66°F, which is a touch warmer than what you’d expect for this time of year—nothing wild, but a pleasant little anomaly if you’re paddling out.
The first few days are a write-off. From Friday the 21st right through until the end of the month, it’s one poor surf condition after another. The swell is tiny, with heights barely scraping 2 ft on the better days, and the wind is often a cross-off or cross-on breeze that just doesn’t allow the waves to clean up. There’s a brief flicker of energy on the 26th with a 5 ft to 6 ft SSW swell, but the wind is cross-on and messy, making it a total washout. Honestly, the whole first week is a dud for surfing.
We hit a bit of a gap here, but around the 1st of September, things start to wake up. The morning of the 1st sees a solid 7 ft swell from the west, with a combined energy value of 1132, which is a proper chunk of power. But the wind is a light cross-on, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy. It’s only a marginal call, and the afternoon drops off. Not a standout.
The real window you want to watch is the Thursday morning of the 3rd of September. The swell is 5 ft from the west, with a period of 6 seconds, so it’s a short-period wind swell. The wind is light—just 3 mph from the WNW, making it a cross-shore with only small ripples. That’s close to glassy, and it’ll be clean. The combined energy is a moderate 339, so there’s enough push to get a few fun ones. This is the best on offer in the whole outlook. It’s not a monster, but for a clean, surfable wave with no crowds to worry about (it’s only “sometimes” busy), this is your moment.
After that, the 5th of September also looks promising. The Saturday afternoon has a 3 ft west swell with glassy conditions—wind is dead calm. It’s small, but if you’re after a longboard session in clean water, that’s a beautiful call. The energy is low at 122, so it’s weak, but the glassy surface makes it worth a paddle.
Overall, don’t get excited for the first week. The best surf comes on the 3rd and 5th of September. Keep your eyes on the horizon for those cleaner days.
Rusty.
