Alright, Rusty here again, giving you the same look in feet and miles.
Right now, it’s a bit of a tough watch for surfers. We're looking at a long, quiet spell. For the first week and a half, from Monday the 6th of July through to Wednesday the 15th, it’s basically flat or tiny, and on top of that, most of the time the wind is howling out of the east, which is cross-offshore but just way too strong for any decent paddle surfing. It’s more of a kite session setup for most of that period. The water temp is sitting at 62°, which is about one degree warmer than normal for the time of year – so not bad for a summer dip, even if the surf isn’t playing ball.
Things finally start to look up around Thursday the 16th, but it’s messy. Then we get our first real standout window. Friday morning, the 17th of July is the one to circle. We've got a solid 6 ft swell from the WSW, with a light NNW cross-off breeze. The combined energy is pumping at 447 – that’s moderate to strong energy. It’s going to be clean and has potential, though it’s on the bigger side of intermediate territory.
But the absolute cream of the crop, the one session I’d be waiting for, is Saturday morning, the 18th of July. This is the standout. We're looking at a solid 8 ft swell, still from the WSW, with a glassy 6 mph NNW cross-off wind. The combined energy is a thumping 695. This is big, powerful, clean surf. That said, with waves over 8 ft, this is strictly for experienced surfers only. It’s too powerful for beginners.
After that, there’s another pulse on Monday the 20th, with a big 8 ft swell from the west and a light ESE cross-off in the afternoon, giving very good conditions with a combined energy of 877. Tuesday the 21st gets even bigger, with 10 ft swell but the easterly wind cranks up to 22 mph, making it too messy and blown out for safe paddling.
So the bottom line: it’s a long wait. There’s nothing worthwhile until Friday the 17th. The big winner is Saturday morning the 18th, but only if you’re an expert. Friday the 17th morning and Monday the 20th afternoon are your next best bets for solid, cleaner waves.
Rusty.
