The Lowdown
Alright, mate, I’ve had a proper look at the charts for Poldhu Cove, and I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim run for the next week and a half. The first surf recommendation that’s even worth a mention doesn’t pop up until Thursday, the 23rd of July, and that’s a long way off. There’s a massive gap of nearly ten days with nothing but tiny, weak, and poor conditions. The energy is just not there, with combined swell readings mostly in the teens and twenties, and the wind is often a cross-off but just too strong to make the small lumps any good. The water is a balmy 66°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual – feels like a warm bath, but sadly the surf hasn’t shown up to match.
The only real standout, and I mean *the only* one, is the morning of Saturday, the 25th of July. That’s when things finally line up. The southwest swell pushes up to 4ft, period is a solid 10 seconds, and the wind is glassy from the northeast. That’s a major positive – clean, smooth waves at a spot that’s fairly exposed to the swell. The combined energy is a moderate 322, which is a decent kick. For a beginner-friendly spot like Poldhu Cove, this is the pick of the whole 16 days. The waves will be small enough to learn on but with enough shape thanks to that groundswell period. Just be aware, it’s an inconsistent break, so don’t expect non-stop action.
The afternoon of that same day gets a bit bumpier as the wind picks up to a cross-off from the NNW at 12 mph, and the swell jumps to 5ft. That’s getting a bit much for the beginners, and the period drops to 10 seconds, so it’s a little more raw. The following Monday morning, the 27th, sees a bigger 7ft swell from the west with a 9-second period and combined energy of 786 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is a clean cross-off, so it’s surfable for the experienced crew, but it’s a beach break setup, so those long-period swells can be a bit straight and dumpy. The afternoon brings a rating of “very good surf conditions,” but by then, the swell is still 7ft, and while clean, it’s pushing into expert territory.
Overall, it’s a slow start, a long wait, and then one morning of proper glassy fun. After that, it gets messy with wind and size. The forecast is decent for that Saturday morning, but the long-range stuff later in the second week is less certain, so keep an eye on it.
