Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Poldhu Cove. This is looking like a two-week stretch where you’ll have to be patient and pick your moments. There’s no proper swell on the cards, and the wind is rarely playing ball. We’re looking at a long period of very ordinary, often poor, conditions.
The forecast kicks off with a blank. Saturday the 4th is a washout – lumpy 4ft wind swell from the west with a cross breeze, that’s a write-off for a decent paddle. This sets the tone. Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th are more of the same: small, weak, and messy. Combined energy is low, sitting around the 160s and 120s, which tells you there’s nothing pushing through.
Tuesday the 7th morning is where we get our first real chance, but it’s a quiet one. Glassy conditions and a 2ft west swell (period 9 seconds) mean the water will be like a mirror. The energy is weak, only 89, but for a log or a mini-mal, you could get a few fun little runners. It won’t be pumping, but it’ll be clean. Water temperature is 63°, feeling a touch warmer than average for July, so that’s a small bonus.
The main standout, and I mean the only one worth setting an alarm for, is Thursday the 9th morning. We get a proper offshore breeze from the north-northeast at just 6 mph, cleaning up a 3ft west swell. The period is a steady 9 seconds, and combined energy nudges up to 113 (moderate). It’s small, but those conditions will make it peel nicely and look way better than the size suggests. That’s the session to target.
After that, it’s back to the waiting game. The wind goes onshore or cross-shore again, and the swell stays tiny or gets messy. On the 13th (Monday) there’s a weird 0.7ft, 19-second groundswell from the south-southwest, which is a classic sign of deepwater energy but totally useless for a beach setup. It gets glassy again on the afternoon of the 14th, but you’re still looking at knee-high stuff.
Later in the second week, Friday the 17th sees a spike in size, with 6ft to 7ft from the west-southwest, but it’s onshore and full of chop – combined energy jumps to 519, which is strong, but the quality is garbage. That’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day for the crew at Poldhu.
Right, so to sum it up: of the whole 16 days, Thursday the 9th morning is your true standout. It’s small but clean, and that offshore breeze will make it rideable. The rest is a test of patience. Poldhu is inconsistent at the best of times, so a long quiet stretch like this isn’t a surprise. Forecasts can flip, so keep an eye on it, but for now, wait for that Thursday window.
Rusty.
