Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Poldhu Cove has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a tough run. There’s a big gap of nothing at the start, and the surf that does show up is often battling messy conditions or just not worth the paddle.
The first few days are a write-off. From Sunday, July 5th right through to Tuesday, July 7th, the swell is small and weak, and the wind has got that swell all chopped up. You won’t find me in the water there. It’s not until Wednesday morning, July 8th, that we finally see something ridable, but it’s still only small – about 3ft of west swell with a period of 10 seconds, and the energy is weak at 118. The wind finally cooperates though, with a light cross-offshore breeze, so the surface will be clean. That’s the best we’ve got for a while, but it’s not exactly setting the world on fire.
From there, we get a string of days with that same small, knee-to-waist high west swell. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th keep the clean conditions going, with the wind going light offshore on Friday morning – that’s a nice touch. But the swell energy is still just moderate at best, coming in at 157 on Friday morning. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for them. Saturday the 11th sees the wind go offshore again in the morning and the afternoon, with a slightly longer period 10-second west swell. The waves are still small, but they’ll be clean and a bit more lined up.
Then we hit another dry spell. From Sunday the 12th through to Friday the 17th, the swell drops right out. The combined energy plummets down to values like 30 and 45 – that’s weak, and the wave heights are barely a ripple. There’s a window on Monday the 13th afternoon where a 12-second period long-period west swell pops up, giving a touch more energy at 118, but the height is still only 2ft. It’s a tease.
The forecast gets a little more interesting towards the back end. Around Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th, the swell builds. Saturday brings a 5ft west swell, but the period is a short 6 seconds – that’s wind swell, so it’ll be bumpy and weak. Sunday the 19th morning sees it push to 5ft from the west with a 7-second period. The combined energy jumps to 239. The wind stays cross-offshore, so it will be clean, but that short period means it’s not going to have much power or shape. Then we get to Monday, July 20th. The swell really shows up – 7ft from the west, jumping to 8ft in the afternoon, and the combined energy hits a strong 632. That’s proper size, but here’s the kicker: the wind swings onshore and cross-onshore, so it’s going to be a choppy mess. For a beach break like Poldhu Cove, that setup will look more interesting for kite surfing than for us paddle surfers. That big swell with onshore wind is a no-go for a clean wave.
The standout window is Wednesday morning, July 8th, and Friday morning, July 10th. It’s not massive, but it’s the cleanest we’ll see. With the water temperature at 63°F, that’s a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in a spring suit. Expect small, clean 3ft to 3ft west swell at Poldhu Cove. Crowds are possible here, so you might have company on those clean little waves.
Don’t get too excited about the long-range stuff – that big swell on the 20th looks messy, and the small clean windows in between don’t last long. It’s one of those quiet runs for the area, but it won’t stay poor forever.
Rusty.
