The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s run through the same outlook for Poldhu Cove, but in feet and miles per hour.
The first week and a half is a real bummer. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell with hardly any energy. The water is a warm 67°F, which is a solid 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a big deal if you’re in the water.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until the morning of Saturday, July 26th. That morning we get a pulse of swell from the WNW at 5ft, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits a moderate 194, which is the first real kick. The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the WNW, so it’ll be a bit bumpy, but there’s finally something to work with. That afternoon it drops to 4ft, and the wind goes cross-onshore, making it choppy. The morning of the 26th is the first time you’d want to paddle out, and it’s the only real standout in the first two weeks.
The morning of Monday, July 27th still has some decent 4ft swell from the west with a light cross-shore breeze, but the energy fades by the afternoon.
The next real standout is a long way off, almost two weeks out. On the morning of Saturday, August 1st, we get another nice pulse of WNW swell at 3ft with a 10-second period, which is proper groundswell. The combined energy is 157, nice and solid. The wind is a light cross-shore, so it’s going to be clean. This is a promising session, but it’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it.
The morning of Monday, August 3rd finally delivers some offshore wind from the ENE. The swell is tiny at 2ft, but the 11-second period and clean conditions make it surfable, though very ordinary. It’s the only clean offshore window in the whole 16 days, and it’s a tiny wave.
The pick of the entire period is the morning of Saturday, August 1st. That 3ft WNW groundswell with light cross-shore winds and a 10-second period will be the cleanest, most consistent wave on offer. It’s a long way out, but it’s the best bet.
For the rest of it, the swell is too small or the wind is messy. Don’t get your hopes up for the first week. The morning of July 26th is the first real chance to get wet, and the morning of August 1st is the one to circle on the calendar.
Rusty.
