The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough stretch for Poldhu Cove. We’re looking at a 16-day window, but the first 11 days are basically a write-off for proper surfing. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.7ft to 1ft, with weak energy readings (often under 50). The wind is often cross-offshore, which keeps the surface clean, but there’s just no power behind it. The water is a notable 66°F, which is about 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – a real treat for a summer dip, but not for riding waves.
Things start to change on the 24th of July. We get a proper pulse of southwest swell, hitting 6ft on Friday morning. The combined energy jumps to 358 (moderate), and the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s a windswell – a bit lumpy and raw. The wind is onshore from the southwest at 12 mph, and by the afternoon it’s a cross-onshore at 18 mph, making it fresh and lumpy. This isn’t the cleanest setup, but it’s the most size we’ve seen in two weeks.
The 25th of July (Saturday) keeps that momentum going with 5ft swell from the west-southwest, but the wind is still cross-onshore and choppy. The energy is still solid at 250 (moderate). The 26th of July (Sunday) is messy – strong onshore winds from the south and south-southwest at 25 mph, with rain. The swell drops to 4ft. This stretch is more about power than perfection.
The standout in this entire period is the 24th of July (Friday). The 6ft SW swell is the biggest on offer, and while the wind is messy, with a 7-second period and onshore winds, it’s the only time we get a real push of energy. This is a beach break, so expect it to be a bit of a battle, but for experienced surfers with a bit of patience, it’s the best of a bad bunch. The water is still warm, and the crowds shouldn’t be too bad mid-week, but Poldhu Cove can get busy sometimes.
The 25th of July (Saturday) is a secondary option, but the wind is worse. After that, the swell fades through the 27th and 28th, dropping back under 3ft and losing energy.
There’s a long gap of dry, flat days from the 13th to the 23rd of July. The setup from the 26th to the 28th is more suited to a kiteboarder than a paddler, given the strong, lumpy cross-onshore winds.
Rusty.
