Table - best surf conditions forecast for Poldhu Cove over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Poldhu Cove over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell to kick things off. There’s nothing really worth paddling out for until Wednesday the 8th of July, so you can leave the boards in the shed for a few days.
Come Wednesday morning the 8th of July, we finally see a pulse of life. The water temp’s sitting at 63°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. We’re looking at a 3ft wave from the west, with a 10-second period and a combined energy of 125 (moderate energy). More importantly, the wind is glassy out of the northwest, and that’s a beautiful thing. The waves are small but clean – a fun little longboard or foamie session for the beginners. The spot’s a bit inconsistent, but when you get one, it’ll be a clean little ride. Thursday the 9th of July morning is similar, with a 3ft west swell and glassy NE winds. The energy bumps up to 151 (still moderate energy). That’s your best window all week. The crowds at Poldhu Cove can be around sometimes, so don’t be surprised if there’s a few others out for the same glassy window.
From Friday afternoon onward, the wind ramps up and stays cross-off or cross, but the swell begins to fade. Saturday and Sunday are a write-off – the swell drops to 2ft and then 1ft, all messy and weak. The whole of the second week, from the 13th of July through the 18th of July, is a painful dead run. The swell bottoms out at 0.3ft and 0.7ft. It’s a total non-event. No point even checking the cam.
Now, there’s a glimmer of hope for the third week. On Sunday the 19th of July morning, a new pulse arrives: 4ft from the west (8-second period) with a combined energy of 173 (moderate energy) and light cross-off winds. It’s “surfable” but nothing special. But then, Sunday afternoon – that’s where the fun begins. The swell jumps to 5ft from the WNW, still 8-second period, but the combined energy shoots up to 301 (moderate to strong). The wind is almost glassy out of the east at 3 mph. Expect good surf conditions and clean lines.
And the real standout? Monday the 20th of July morning. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the WNW, 8-second period, with a massive combined energy of 516 (strong wave energy) and light cross-off winds from the ESE at 9 mph. That’ll be the best of the whole 16-day run. It’s pushy for beginners – anything over 5ft can be a handful – but for the intermediates and above, it’s game on. The short period means it’ll be a bit walled at times, but the clean conditions will make up for it. As the afternoon comes, the wind swings onshore from the west at 12 mph and it’ll turn into a choppy mess, so get your session in early.
After that, the wind turns grumpy again and the surf fades back into mediocrity. The energy drops off a cliff, and by the 23rd of July it’s all onshore and weak.
So, the one to circle is Monday morning the 20th of July. It’s the best wave energy and cleanest wind meeting at Poldhu Cove. Get it while it’s good.
Rusty, signing off.
