The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Poldhu Cove.
Right now, the water is sitting at 66°F, which is a touch warmer than we’d usually expect for this time of year. We’ve got a bit of a slow start ahead, with a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions. The first chance to get wet isn't until Saturday the 22nd of August, with a small 2ft swell from the west and a gentle offshore breeze. It’s surfable, but the energy is weak (74), so you won’t exactly be threading the barrel. After that, the waves drop off even more, and we’re looking at a run of very poor surf through the rest of the weekend and into the start of the week. The wind turns cross-off, but the swell is tiny and messy.
The real doldrums hit from Monday the 25th through to the end of the month. We’ll see a bit more size bump up on Thursday the 27th, with a 5ft swell from the southwest, but the wind is onshore and choppy, and the energy is only moderate (351). It’s just not going to be clean. That pattern sticks around for a few days – the wind is howling from the west on the 28th and 29th, making a right mess of things. The swell gets up to 8ft on the afternoon of the 28th, but with a fresh cross-onshore, it’s lumpy and only for the brave.
Now, we finally get a bit of hope. The morning of Monday the 31st of August is looking glassy with a 5ft swell from the west-southwest. The wind is dead calm, and the energy is moderate (333). This is a standout – real clean conditions, and the best wave quality we’ve seen in a while. It’s the first time we’ve got a "good surf conditions" call. The following morning, Tuesday the 1st of September, is also worth a look with a gentle offshore and 3ft of swell. It’s not big, but it’ll be clean.
Looking further out, the best of the whole forecast looks like it’s shaping up for Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning sees a 5ft groundswell from the west, with a moderate offshore wind and a solid 634 energy reading. The period is 11 seconds, so there’s some proper grunt behind it. The afternoon is also good, with a 6ft swell and clean conditions. That’s the one to circle on the calendar, but remember, it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.
After that, the wind turns onshore again for the weekend of the 5th and 6th, and it gets messy. The swell direction shifts to the west-northwest, but it’s not clean enough to get excited about.
So, the short story: a long, slow start, but the glassy morning on the 31st of August is your best early bet. The real gold is waiting on Thursday the 3rd of September – that’s the standout of the whole outlook. Get out there if you can.
Rusty.
