Table - best surf conditions forecast for Poldhu Cove over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Well, I’ve got to be straight with you—this 16-day window for Poldhu Cove is a tough one. There’s a big gap of weak, messy, or just flat days before we see anything worth getting excited about, and even then, it’s only a glimmer. The first real recommendation doesn’t come until Thursday morning, July 9th, but it’s a flicker, not a fire.
Thursday morning, July 9th is the first time we can even talk about a surf. We’ve got a tiny 3ft swell from the west, with a period of 10 seconds. The energy is weak (151). The big positive here is the wind: it’s glassy, dead calm out of the east at 3 mph. That’ll keep the surface clean. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. But honestly, the waves are small and very ordinary. It’s just enough to get wet, but you’ll be scratching for a ride.
After that Thursday morning, it’s a long, grim stretch. From Thursday afternoon all the way through to Sunday, July 19th, the surf is consistently poor, with tiny swell, strong winds, or both. The wind often cranks up from the east and northeast, sometimes hitting 22 to 31 mph, which trashes the surface even if it’s cross-off. There’s a period around July 13th and 14th where the swell is basically flat (0.7ft), so don’t bother.
The first real standout, and honestly the only one worth planning around, is Monday morning, July 20th. This is further out, so keep that in mind, but it’s promising. We finally see a bump in energy with a 4ft swell from the west, a 10-second period, and moderate wave energy (277). The wind is a clean cross-off from the north at 16 mph. The size is just about right for a fun session, but it’s not huge. The waves should be clean and have a bit of push. This is the best on offer for the whole period.
After that, Tuesday July 21st has some rideable 3ft swell, but it’s not a standout. The end of the window, Wednesday July 22nd and Thursday July 23rd, sees the swell size bump up to 4ft and 5ft, but the wind swings onshore and cross-shore, making it choppy and lumpy. On Wednesday afternoon, the swell hits 5ft with a fresh cross-shore wind—that’s going to be a messy, blown-out mess. Probably more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re desperate, Thursday morning July 9th is a glassy but tiny option. The real target is Monday morning, July 20th, for a clean, solid 4ft swell. Everything else in between is a write-off.
Rusty.
