The Lowdown
Alright, I’ve had a good look at this one. To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks are pretty grim for Port Eynon Point. It’s an inconsistent reef break at the best of times, and for most of this forecast window, it just doesn’t have the swell or the wind to get you excited. You’re looking at a long, quiet stretch here.
The first real pulse of energy doesn’t show up until Tuesday, the 18th of August, but even then, it’s not great. We get a moderate cross-shore wind with chest-high, 4ft swell from the west, but the period is short—only 7 seconds—so it’s weak and disorganised. The wave energy is moderate at best (137). It’s a pass. Wednesday the 19th is similar, with 4ft to 5ft swell from the west, but the wind is cross-shore and the period is still short (6 seconds). It’s not clean enough to bother with.
Then, we hit a proper dry spell. From Friday the 22nd right through to the morning of Thursday the 28th of August, the swell drops to under 3ft. It’s flat, mate. There’s nothing to ride. You’d be better off taking the dog for a walk.
However, and this is a big however, the forecast for Friday the 28th of August into the weekend is absolutely wild. A massive, long-period groundswell from the WSW shows up. On Friday morning we're looking at a huge 15ft swell with a period of 12 seconds—very long period. The wave energy is off the charts (5554). The wind turns offshore from the ENE, making the surface clean. But I have to be honest with you, this is way too big for this break. It’s an expert-only situation, and even then, it’s likely just a washing machine. The reef won’t handle it well. The guidance itself says it’s too big. Saturday the 29th remains oversized at 12ft, with offshore winds again, but again, that’s only for the absolute best of the best—and even they’ll be on the edge.
So, the standout option, if you’re a brave soul, is Friday the 28th of August. The swell direction (WSW) matches the optimum, the wind is offshore, but the size is the problem. For the average surfer, there’s nothing to recommend in this entire 16-day window. It’s a bit of a dead zone for Port Eynon Point.
