The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the forecast for Rhosneigr. It's a grim picture for the next week and a half, so I'll be straight up with you. There's a whole lot of nothing on the cards until the beginning of September.
The water temperature is sitting at 64.6°, which is a solid 4.1° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's pretty weird, but it's about the only thing that's interesting.
We start off with a run of poor conditions. From Tuesday the 18th of August right through to the end of the month, the surf is tiny and the wind is all over the place. There are a few days there with clean conditions and light winds, like the 21st through the 24th, but the swell is next to nothing – just 0.3 ft of weak, long-period energy. Even the glassy conditions on Monday the 24th morning won't make a wave out of nothing. It's a proper flat spell. The combined energy barely registers, with values like 15 and 8 (weak energy), so you're just looking at a lake.
The wind shows some signs of life on the 27th afternoon with a moderate offshore breeze and a clean 1.3 ft swell, but the energy is still very low at 24 (weak). It's a long wait.
Then, hold onto your board. On Tuesday the 1st of September, something finally shows up. We've got a 9.8 ft swell from the SW with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 830 (strong wave energy), and the wind is a clean cross-offshore breeze from the NNW. This is a big chunk of swell, but it's too big for this spot. The forecast even says it's too big for the break, so this is strictly for experts only, and even then, it's a beast. The period is short, so it'll be a bit lumpy and walled up. That afternoon the swell drops to 7.5 ft and the energy is still 438 (strong), but the conditions are still clean. If you're an absolute charger, the Tuesday morning is the standout, but you have been warned.
The rest of the first week of September is messy with onshore winds and dropping swell. The 2nd of September has a 5.9 ft swell from the W, but it's crossed-up and lumpy from a strong SSW wind. Not worth the drive.
So, to wrap it up: the only real window of opportunity is the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September with a massive, clean swell. It's a long-range call, so don't bank on it. Before that, you're better off cleaning the wax off your board.
