The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the surf forecast for the next couple of weeks is a bit of a heartbreaker. We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple, so don't get your hopes up for anything decent for a while.
The first real mention of anything surfable doesn't pop up until Sunday, the 30th of August. Even then, it’s a bit of a mess. On that Sunday morning, we’ve got a 5ft swell from the southwest, but the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, making it choppy. The wave energy is solid, but the quality is poor. The afternoon cleans up a little, with a 8ft swell from the southwest and a gentle cross-shore, giving it a slightly better chance, but it's still only marginal. That swell is a bit short in the tooth at 7 seconds, so it won't have much grunt.
Monday the 31st of August sees a similar story, but the swell gets bigger and a bit more westerly. We’re looking at 8ft from the west-southwest, but the wind is still cross-onshore and choppy. This is getting into the territory where it's only for the experts. The energy is pumping, but the conditions are just plain ugly.
We finally get a bit of a breather on Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning offers a 5ft swell from the northwest with a clean cross-offshore wind. The conditions are described as "surfable waves but very ordinary". It’s not a standout, but it’s the cleanest we’ll see all week. The afternoon is similar but smaller.
After that, it all fades away again. The rest of the forecast is a total write-off, with tiny swells and messy onshore winds. The whole period is a real bummer, with long gaps of nothing. For the beginner crowd, the early part of the week is too small anyway, and the bigger stuff is too rough. Honestly, it's a tough outlook.
Alright, keep an eye on the sky, but don't hold your breath. Until next time, this is Rusty signing off.
