The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for the next couple of weeks around Rhosneigr. I’ll be honest with you, this forecast is a tough one to swallow. For the first nine days, from now through to the 22nd of July, the surf is practically non-existent. We’re looking at tiny, weak waves that are barely worth paddling for. It’s a real flat spell. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a good 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a bath out there, but with no waves to enjoy it.
The real heartbreaker is that the wind stays offshore for a lot of that time, especially the first few days. For example, on Monday the 13th afternoon, we have a fresh offshore breeze from the NE at 19 mph, but with a swell height of just 0.3 ft from the South and a period of 19 seconds, the combined energy is a measly (7). It’s all show and no go. That pattern continues through the 14th, 15th, and 16th – clean, glassy-looking conditions but with next to nothing to ride. The swell energy stays in the single digits for most of this period, so you’re really just admiring the flat water.
Around the 17th and 18th, the wind swings more cross-offshore, but the wave heights are still stuck at 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft. There’s just no push. The 20th and 21st see a complete flat spell with zero swell energy (0) coming through. It’s a long, quiet stretch.
Things finally start to look a little different on Wednesday the 22nd morning. We get a tiny pulse of 1 ft from the NW with a period of just 4 seconds and combined energy of (7). The wind is light and offshore from the North, so it’s clean, but this is a weak, short-period wave that won’t do much on a beach break like this. It’s not really a standout, just a sign that the ocean is still alive.
From the 24th of July onward, we see a change in the weather pattern. The wind swings onshore from the SSW, and the swell starts to build. On Friday the 24th afternoon, we have 3 ft from the SSW at a period of 4 seconds, with the energy jumping to (32). The problem is the onshore wind at 12 mph is going to chop it up. That swell direction is what Rhosneigr likes, but the short period and onshore wind mean it’s going to be a bit of a mess.
The best of a bad bunch looks like Saturday the 25th morning. We’ve got 3 ft from the SSW, period up to 7 seconds, and the energy hits (62). The wind is still onshore from the SSW at 16 mph, which is a bummer, but this is the biggest, most consistent swell we’ve seen. It’s not a classic, and it’s definitely not for beginners as the swell is pushing 3 ft. For the experienced crew, you might get a few uneven, chunky waves, but it’s not going to be pretty. The onshore flow is going to keep it lumpy.
After that, the 26th and 27th just get worse. The wind gets nasty, with strong breezes and even near-gale force winds on the 27th, blowing the surf out completely. The 28th is similar – fresh onshore wind and a small, weak swell.
So, the only real standout, if you can call it that, is the Saturday morning of the 25th. It’s the biggest surf of the entire 16-day window, but the wind is against it. If you’re a local who loves a challenge and can handle a sectiony, wind-affected wave, it might be your only chance to get wet. For everyone else, this is a long stretch of flat or poor conditions. The forecast can change, but right now, it’s grim.
Rusty.
