The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the Rhosneigr stretch over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m not going to sugarcoat it – this 16-day window is looking like a tough one for paddle surfing. We’ve got a long, quiet gap right off the bat. The first real surfable bump doesn't show up until the morning of Wednesday the 26th of August, and even then it’s not much to write home about. There’s a solid gap of nearly a week with nothing but tiny, unsurfable waves before that.
The water temperature at Rhosneigr is sitting at 65°F right now, which is a solid 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s much warmer than normal, so you can leave the thickest rubber at home.
The only real standout, and I’m using that term loosely, is the afternoon of Wednesday the 26th of August. We’ll see a short-period S swell pushing in at 6 ft, with combined wave energy of 237 (moderate). The direction is SSW, which is right in the sweet spot for this exposed break. The downside is the wind is light and cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy with small wind ripples. It’s a marginal call, but it’s the only time we get any decent height.
The morning of Friday the 28th of August brings the biggest swell of the period – a 7 ft SSW swell with a beefy 309 energy reading, but it’s getting hammered by a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind. The surf will be lumpy and messy. By the afternoon, it jumps to 10 ft with 1025 energy, but again, it’s onshore and choppy. That’s expert-only territory, and honestly, with that wind, the setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The morning of Saturday the 29th of August offers a brief moment of hope with glassy conditions and a 3 ft SW swell. The energy is weak at 86, but at least it’s clean. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Beyond that, through the end of August and into early September, we’re back to tiny, weak swells. The morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September sees a 4 ft SW groundswell with a 5-second period, but the energy is low at 97. The wind is offshore and moderate, so it’ll be clean, but the waves will be small and lack punch.
Overall, it’s a lean stretch. The best bet is the afternoon of the 26th for a few lumpy, rideable waves, or the glassy morning of the 29th for a clean but small session. Otherwise, keep your expectations low.
Rusty.
