What’s up, folks? Rusty here with the long-range look at Rhosneigr. Gotta be honest – it’s gonna be a quiet couple of weeks before we see anything worth paddling for.
Right now and for the next week and a half, we’re lookin’ at a proper flat spell. From the 10th right through to around the 21st, there’s just no swell to speak of. Days and days of zero energy or tiny little 0.3ft pulses that just don’t add up to anything rideable. The wind will be offshore or glassy at times, which would be perfect if there was any wave to clean up, but there just isn’t. It’s gonna be a long, frustrating run.
Now, if you’ve got some patience, there’s a flicker of hope late in the window. By the afternoon of Tuesday the 21st, we finally see a pulse of new swell fillin’ in. We’re lookin’ at around 4ft from the SSW with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is still weak at 93, so don’t expect any power. But the wind will be a light cross-off from the N, keepin’ things reasonably clean. It’s not gonna be world-class, but after over a week of nothing, it’ll at least be something to sit on your board for.
Then on Wednesday the 22nd, we’ve got the best of the bunch. The morning shapes up nicely with a 4ft swell from the WSW, short period again at 4 seconds, and light offshore wind from the ENE at only 3 mph. The combined energy is still weak at 45, so it’s small and weak, but with glassy, clean conditions, it’ll be the pick of the whole outlook. This is a beginner-friendly size, so if you’re learning or just want a gentle session without any hassle, that Wednesday morning is your window. Water temp is around a touch warmer than normal for the time of year at 61°, so not too bad for a July dip.
After that, the outlook gets messy again. Thursday the 23rd turns cloudy with light onshore breezes, and by Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th the wind will swing cross-onshore and get fresh, blowing that small swell into a chop. Stay away from those afternoons unless you’re a kite surfer – that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So to sum it up: a long flat spell, then a brief window around Tuesday the 21st afternoon and especially Wednesday the 22nd morning – that’s your best shot. Don’t expect much, but it’ll be clean and small. After that, it’s back to messy conditions.
Stay patient, stay stoked.
Rusty.
