The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Rhosneigr. To be honest, mate, it’s a bit of a slow burner. The water’s sitting at 65°F which is much warmer than normal for the time of year, so that’s a nice surprise if you’re getting in.
For the first week, it’s pretty grim. Saturday the 22nd, Sunday the 23rd, and Monday the 24th are all a flat, wobbly mess with tiny 0.3ft swell. There’s a bit of glass on Monday morning, but with nothing to ride, it’s a day for a paddle at best. Tuesday and Wednesday the 25th and 26th aren’t much better, with weak, short-period stuff. Thursday the 27th afternoon sees a spike in energy – a 7ft swell from the SSW with a short period of 7 seconds – but it’s coming straight onshore with a risk of thunderstorms, and the combined energy is a meaty 455 (moderate wave energy). That’s a messy, lumpy mess for experts only, and honestly, looks more like a kite session than a surf.
Friday the 28th keeps the onshore wind, with a 6ft SSW swell (523 combined energy) in the morning, but it’s still a bit of a choppy thing. The weekend of the 29th and 30th is cross-onshore and lumpy, with dropping swell. Then we hit a proper gap of no real surf from the 31st right through to the 1st of September.
Now, the real standout – and it’s a long-range promise, so keep your fingers crossed – comes on Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September. Wednesday morning serves up a clean 4ft SW swell with a gentle offshore breeze from the ENE. That’s surfable, but the afternoon is where it gets interesting: 5ft SW swell, period 6 seconds, with a clean offshore wind from the NE. The combined energy jumps to 182 (moderate wave energy). It’s not huge, but it’s clean and rideable. Thursday morning holds onto that 5ft SW swell with light offshore winds, so a good window for a cruisey session. The short period means it’ll be a bit fat and won’t have much punch, but it beats the flat spell we’ve had. After that, it fades back to nothing.
So, the best bet is the Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September. The rest of the window is a write-off.
