The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next week and a half is looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a lot of onshore wind and hardly any size. It’s one of those stretches where you might be better off sorting out your quiver or fixing that leaky wetsuit.

The good news? There is a pulse of proper swell waiting at the end of the tunnel. The real standout window looks like it’s going to be the 1st of September. Mark that in your calendar.

Let’s run through it. We start off with nothing but ankle-biters. Monday the 17th we’ve got a tiny 1 ft dribble at Rhosneigr (Anglesey) with a light cross-onshore breeze. Water temp is sitting at 65°F, which is a notable 4°F warmer than average for this time of year – a nice little bonus if you do get in, but the surf is woeful.

The 18th through to the 25th is basically dead. We’re looking at waves mostly under 4 ft, with the wind swinging all over the place. A lot of these days are cross-onshore or onshore, making a mess of things. On the morning of the 20th there’s a brief window with a cross-offshore breeze cleaning up a tiny 2 ft wave, but it’s not worth getting excited about. The energy is weak, with values barely hitting double digits. The swell periods are short too, around 5-6 seconds, which just means crumbly, weak surf. It’s a long, flat, and lumpy gap. There’s really nothing rideable here until things change.

Finally, things start to turn around on the 26th of August. It’s still not great, but it’s surfable. The morning brings a light cross-offshore breeze with a 4 ft SSW swell, though the period is a short 5 seconds. The combined energy ticks up to 112, which is at least moderate. The afternoon is better; the wind drops to glassy (0 mph), and there’s a 4 ft SSW swell with a slightly better 8-second period. The energy reading climbs to 151. It’s clean, but it’s a mushy, unremarkable wave. This is a 1/10 kind of day, just to get wet.

The 27th and 28th see the energy jump around, but the wind and the direction are all wrong. The 28th throws up a 4 ft swell with a cross-onshore fresh breeze and lumpy conditions. Energy hits 198 but it’s onshore junk.

Then we get the big change. The 29th of August brings the first real size, 6 ft, but it’s still messy with a cross-onshore wind and choppy conditions. The energy is strong at 280, but it's not clean. The 31st sees a beast of a swell roll in, hitting 10 ft in the afternoon with a strong 1028 energy reading. But it’s pinned with a 22 mph onshore wind. The sea is going to be a washing machine – this is definitely not for beginners. At this size, it’s only for experts anyway, and with that wind, even they’ll be struggling. It might look interesting for the kite surfers, not so much for us.

But then, hold on to your board shorts. On the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September, it all comes together. The wind swings offshore (NE at 6 mph) and it’s clean. We’ve got a 8 ft WSW swell with a 7-second period. The combined energy is strong at 499. This is the standout of the entire 16-day window. It’s a solid, powerful wave, and with that offshore wind, Rhosneigr is going to be firing. This is one to get on. Just be aware, 8 ft is pushing into expert territory, especially with the short period. It’s going to be a proper handful. The afternoon on the 1st looks like it will get blown out by a fresh onshore breeze, so the morning session is your window.

So, there you have it. A long flat spell, some rough and messy days, but one promising morning on the 1st that should be worth the wait. Forecasts are more reliable for the near term, so keep an eye on the charts closer to the time.

Rusty, out.
