The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Rhosneigr over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet stretch for the most part. The swell is almost non-existent for the first week, and when it does finally show some signs of life, the wind is often messing it up. Don't get your hopes up too high for a classic session.
Starting off, from Saturday the 22nd to Wednesday the 27th of August, it’s pretty flat. You’re looking at tiny 0.3ft to 1ft waves from the southwest. The energy is weak, barely registering. It’s just not worth paddling out for. There is a moment on Monday morning the 24th where it goes glassy, but with only 0.3ft on offer, it’s a lake, not a surf break. That’s a long gap of nothing to get excited about.
Thursday the 27th afternoon brings a bit of a spike – a 6ft swell from the WSW, but with a short period of 5 seconds, and a risk of thunderstorms. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The wind goes glassy, so it’ll be clean, but the quality just isn’t there. A kite surfer might get a giggle, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a miss.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th see the swell drop back down again, with onshore and cross-shore winds making a mess of things. The energy stays low to moderate. Sunday the 30th through to Tuesday the 2nd of September is more of the same – small, choppy, and onshore. A few bumpy 4ft to 6ft pulses from the SW/SSW but the wind is just rubbish.
Now, the standout window, and the only one that looks truly interesting, is Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning sees a 7ft swell from the SSW with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is strong. Now, that’s a real pulse of energy. However, the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the SE, creating a cross-chop, so it won't be perfect. It’s a marginal forecast, but it’s the best on offer. Given the size, over 5ft, this is not for beginners; it'll be one for the experienced crew. Keep an eye on the wind, as a shift could make all the difference.
Friday the 4th of September cleans up nicely, with a gentle 3ft to 3ft SSW swell and a clean offshore wind from the NE. It’s small, but it’ll be fun, clean little waves for a longboard or a funboard. This is a solid second choice.
After that, it fades back to tiny, clean, but flat conditions for the weekend.
So, to sum it up: the best bet is Thursday the 3rd of September for a bigger, more powerful swell – but expect some chop. Friday the 4th will be cleaner but smaller. The rest of the window is a write-off.
Rusty.
