Right, Rusty here again. Let’s have a look at what’s comin’ down the line for the next couple weeks. I gotta be straight with ya – it’s gonna be a real struggle for most of it. We got a whole lotta nothin’ before anything even starts to look worthwhile.
The first ten days or so are pretty much a write-off. From now, right through to July 24th, there’s barely a ripple. You’ll see some tiny bits of energy, maybe 0.3ft to 0.7ft, but with combined swell energy readings mostly in the single digits or low teens (0 to 18), that’s just not enough to push over. We’ve got a mix of offshores and cross-off winds, which would be clean if there was any swell, but there ain’t. Conditions are poor for surf the whole way through.
After that long, quiet gap, things finally change around July 24th. We start to see a pulse on the Friday afternoon. The swell comes up to 5ft out of the SSW, with a period of just 5 seconds. That’s a short-period windswell, nothing special, but it’s the first real sign of life. The combined energy climbs to 104 – moderate – and we’ve got a gentle offshore wind from the NE. The data calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and I’d agree. It’s not gonna be a classic day, but after the drought, it’ll feel like a gift.
Then Saturday July 25th gets bigger, but honestly, not better. The morning sees 8ft from the W with a 6-second period, and the afternoon is 8ft from the NW with a 7-second period. The combined energy jumps into the strong range – 461 and then 556. That’s a lot of juice. But the wind is cross-onshore from the WSW and then cross-onshore from the SSW, blowing at 9-19 mph, which is gonna make it lumpy and messy. 8ft and 8ft with that kind of wind is gonna be a bumpy, blown-out mess. This is gonna be one for the experts only, and even then, it’ll be a wrestling match, not a session to remember.
So, if I’m being honest, the absolute standout here is the afternoon of Friday July 24th at Rhosneigr. It’s the only window where we’ve got a clean offshore wind and a wave that’s actually ridable. The 5ft swell from the SSW at head-high or so with the NE offshore should see some peaky, clean walls. Crowds are a possibility, as it’s fairly consistent and the first good day in a long time. Water temp is 61° which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year – not a huge deal, but a nice bonus.
Everything else in that second week looks like a right-off again. By the 26th, the swell drops back to 1ft. The wait continues.
Stick with it. It’s a lean run, but that Friday the 24th might just be worth making a plan for.
Rusty.
