The Lowdown
Alright, I’ve had a good look at the charts for our little corner here. I’ll be honest with you, mate, it’s a rough stretch ahead. The next sixteen days are looking pretty grim for Rhosneigr. We’ve got a long, long gap with hardly a ripple to get excited about.
Right now, and for the next several days, we’re stuck with tiny, weak swell. The energy is just pathetic, with combined energy values barely reaching double digits, like 8 or 9. The swell is coming from the SW, which is the right direction for this spot, but there’s just no size to it – we’re talking waves of 0.3 ft. It’s poor surf conditions day after day. The wind is mostly offshore or cross-offshore, which would be great if there was any wave to ride, but there isn’t. You’ll get a few glassy mornings, like on Sunday the 23rd and Saturday the 5th of September, but it’s flat.
The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t appear until Thursday the 27th of August. We get a bit of a bump in the morning, with a 4 ft swell from the SSW and a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy finally climbs to 115 (moderate), and the wind is light and cross-offshore from the ESE, making it clean. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” so it’s not a standout, but it’s the best we’ll see for a while. The rest of that day and the next are just poor again.
Then, on Saturday the 29th of August, we get a bigger, more powerful swell. The morning brings a 6 ft swell from the SW with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 287 (strong). That’s a solid amount of energy, but the wind is onshore from the SW at 12 mph, so it’s going to be a messy, blown-out mess. The wave comment is “poor surf conditions.” For a beach-and-reef setup like this, with that much wind and swell, it’s probably going to be more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddlers.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak swell and onshore winds, bottoming out completely by the first week of September. We’re looking at 0.3 ft again, with long-period swells (16 seconds) that have no height. The wind is cross-offshore, but who cares when there’s nothing to ride.
So, to sum it up: the only thing that even comes close to a recommendation is the Thursday morning, the 27th of August. It’s not great, but it’s the only game in town. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no shock there. For the rest of the forecast, save your wax and your energy. It’s a blank run.
