Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming for our little stretch of coast.
Straight up, for the next week and a half it’s a tough slog. The short-term is a write-off and it won’t be until well into the second week that anything even worth looking at shows up. We’re talking about a long dry spell from now until around the 19th or 20th.
The first real pulse of energy arrives around Monday the 20th of July. The sea starts to show some muscle, with north swell pumping up to over 8 ft. That is serious water moving around, and the combined energy is blasting into the 2000s, which is really powerful stuff. That size is well into expert territory only, so if you aren’t comfortable in heavy water, sit this one out.
The standout, and really the only window that’s worth a mention, is looking like Monday morning, July 20th up at Whitby (beach/pier). We’ve got an 8 ft swell from the north, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind will be a light cross-onshore from the north at only 3 mph, which is the best wind we’ll see on that bigger swell. It’s about timing though; the tide will be a factor, so check it before you go. That spot generally handles a north-east swell best, and while the north angle is a bit off, the sheer size and 2001 combined energy make it the only real game in town. Expect that spot to be *often* crowded if there’s a wave to be had, and that Monday morning will be no exception. If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly wave, that 6 ft swell on Sunday the 19th is out as the wind will be howling. The 7 ft on Monday afternoon turns messy with a stronger cross-shore wind. So Monday morning is your pick, but it’s for experts only.
Water temp is sitting at 59°F, which is about a touch warmer than we’d expect for July.
So, a long wait, but there’s a big, punchy session for the crew with the skills and the nerve to paddle out.
