The Lowdown
Right, folks. Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the local line-up.
Honestly, for the next week and a half, it’s a tough slog. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor conditions with a lot of messy, cross-onshore wind. The water is currently sitting at 59°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year. The first real glimmer of hope doesn't come around until the end of the month.
Friday 24th July offers a bit of a tease. The morning sees a tiny 3 ft swell from the north-northeast, but the wind drops to a glassy 3 mph from the west-northwest. That’s a rare moment of total calm. The energy is weak (89), and the waves will be small, but for a quiet paddle on a longboard, you might get a few clean, crumbly ones. The afternoon goes even flatter at 2 ft, so it’s a short window.
After that, we’re back into a flat spell with barely any energy until the end of the month.
Thursday 30th July is the standout for the whole outlook. The morning starts to build with a 5 ft north-northeast swell, but it’s the afternoon that gets the blood pumping. We’ve got a 6 ft swell from the north with a period of 8 seconds, giving a solid 641 energy reading. The wind goes light and cross-offshore from the northwest, which should clean things up nicely. That’s a proper session shaping up for the confident intermediate surfer, with clean, punchy waves on offer.
Friday 31st July tries to hold on, but the morning gets hammered by a 22 mph cross-onshore wind, turning things into a lumpy mess. The afternoon is a bit better, but still messy.
So, to sum it up: the first ten days are a write-off. The best you’re going to get is a glassy but small window on the 24th. The real action to pencil in is the afternoon of Thursday 30th July at Whitby. It’s a while off, so keep an eye on it, but that’s the one.
Rusty.
