Table - best surf conditions forecast for Whitby over the next 16 days.
Alright, I’m gonna be straight with you – this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window for Whitby is a real struggle. We’ve got a long, dry spell of nothing good to ride.
Right now, and for the next few days, it’s all about tiny, weak waves. The swell is rummaging around in the 1 to 2 foot range, mostly from the north-northeast, and the period is short – under 8 seconds. That means the wave energy is just pathetic, reading between 14 and 42 (combined energy). The wind is a real killer too. It’s coming from the east and northeast, putting us in a cross-onshore or onshore state, keeping the surface messy and choppy. It’s not surfable.
The first real chance for anything worth paddling out for might be on Sunday, the 12th of July. We finally see a bump to 3 feet from the northeast, but the period is still a weak 6 seconds, so it’s going to be a dumpy, chopped-up mess. The wind is still a moderate cross-onshore at 12 mph. The energy jumps to a moderate 79, but the surf quality is described as "poor". It’s not looking good.
The best of a bad bunch arrives on Monday, the 13th of July. The swell pushes up to 4 feet from the northeast, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits moderate levels at 122. But again, that persistent north-northeast wind at 12 mph is going to be cross-onshore, making it lumpy and choppy. It’s going to be a raw, windy day. The water temp is about average for the time of year, sitting at 58°.
There’s a bit more size on the 18th of July, with the swell hitting 4 feet from the north-northeast, but the period drops to 6 seconds and the wind is howling at 15-18 mph from the north. That’s a fresh breeze and it’s going to be lumpy. The energy is a moderate 135, but this is a beach/pier setup, and with that kind of strong onshore wind, honestly, this is looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
After that, it’s a slow fade back into tiny, weak waves with no wind relief. The whole second week is a washout. There’s a glimmer of hope on the very last day, Friday the 24th of July, with a brief moment of glassy conditions and a 3 foot swell from the north, but the period is still a short 6 seconds. It’s a tease.
Bottom line: there are no standout days. The consistent onshore winds and tiny, weak swell just don’t line up. It’s one of those blank runs that’s pretty normal for this area. Forecasts can change, but for now, I’d keep the board in the car and the wax in the wrapper.
Rusty.
