The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up, because I've been staring at the charts for Whitby and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and messy for the most part. There’s a couple of small windows where it might be worth a paddle, but you'll have to pick your moments carefully.
The whole run kicks off with a bit of a tease on Sunday the 23rd. We get a clean 4ft swell from the NNE with a short 8-second period, and the combined energy is a moderate 211. The wind is a light cross-off from the WNW, so the morning session is actually rideable, just very ordinary. But it's short-lived; by the afternoon the wind swings onshore and kills it.
Then we hit a long, flat, and frustrating stretch. From Sunday afternoon all the way through to the end of the month, it’s pretty much a write-off. There are a few days where the swell bumps up, like the 26th of August with a 6ft easterly swell (energy of 563), but the wind is terrible – onshore and choppy. It's just poor conditions. You’re looking at a solid week of small, weak, wind-blown slop. Not worth getting the board wet.
We finally get a glimmer of hope on Monday the 31st of August. The early morning session is looking glassy with a 5ft swell from the north, period of 7 seconds, and a moderate energy reading of 231. The conditions are described as “surfable but very ordinary,” but that glassy wind is a massive plus. It’ll be clean, so if you’re desperate for a wave, dawn patrol that day. But don’t expect much power.
After that, the first few days of September look pretty average again. A bit of size on the 1st with 6-6ft from the NNE, but the wind is cross-onshore and messy, which is a shame because the energy is strong at 412-455. It’ll be a choppy, bumpy mess.
The real standout, if you can wait, is Saturday the 5th of September. It’s not big, only a 3ft swell from the NNW, but the wind is offshore from the WSW. It’ll be clean and lined up. The energy is weak at 92, so don't expect barrels, but for a clean, fun, small-wave session, this is your best bet in the whole outlook.
To be honest, for the first week and a half, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those windy, choppy days.
Remember, the water temp is about average for this time of year at Whitby, so a 4/3 will do you fine.
Keep an eye on the forecasts, as these things can change.
