The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I've gotta be straight with you—this is a tough one for us. The next 16 days are looking pretty ordinary overall. We're starting off with a long stretch of nothing much to get excited about, with a real lull for the first week and a half. The only real standout comes right at the end of the window, and it's a bit of a gamble that far out.
Alright, let's get into it. From Wednesday the 15th right through to Wednesday the 23rd, it's a bleak run. We're talking about a solid week of small, weak, messy surf. The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, making things choppy and lumpy. The combined swell energy is tiny, often well under 100 (37), and the swell heights are barely cracking 2 feet, with a short, weak period around 6 seconds. There's a bit of a pulse on the 18th and 19th, with the swell bumping up to 5 feet and even 8 feet, and the energy climbing into the hundreds (339), but the wind is still a problem—cross-onshore and fresh—so it's just messy, lumpy, and not worth paddling out.
Then we get a little reprieve. The 24th of July, Friday morning and afternoon, the wind finally swings to a clean cross-offshore from the W at 15 km/h. The swell is still small, only 3 feet from the N with a 7-second period, and the energy is low (61), but it's clean. That's the first time we can genuinely say the waves are surfable, but it's tiny.
Now, the only real highlight, and a potential classic, is the 25th of July, Saturday. The morning sees a clean 8-foot swell from the N with a 7-second period, and it builds to 8 feet from the NNE with a 9-second period by the afternoon. The combined swell energy jumps to 1057, which is strong. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the W at just 10 km/h. That's glassy, clean conditions. For Whitby, a beach/pier break, that's a proper session. The optimum swell direction is from the ENE, so this N/NNE swell is a bit off the mark, but with that size, that period, and the clean wind, it's the pick of the bunch. It's a big swell though—over 8 feet—so this is one for the experts only. Beginners, stay on the beach.
After that, the 26th sees the swell drop a bit to 6 feet, but the wind cranks up to 30 km/h from the WSW, still cross-offshore but fresh. It's clean but windy, and the energy is still solid (762), but the quality drops off. The rest of the window into the 30th fades back to small, weak surf with clean but tiny conditions.
So, to sum it up: endure the drought for a week and a half, then circle the 25th of July on your calendar. That's your best shot. Keep an eye on it, but remember, it's a long way out.
Rusty.
