The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about Whitby. It’s a beach and pier setup, fairly exposed, and this stretch is a tough one. Looking at the whole 16-day run, I’m not going to sugarcoat it – there’s nothing that qualifies as a proper surf session. The combined swell energy barely ever climbs, and when it does, the wind is a mess.
We kick off Wednesday the 19th with tiny 2ft windswell out of the north, period a weak 8 seconds, and combined energy is a paltry 31. The wind is okay – light and offshore – but there’s just nothing to ride. That sets the tone. Through Thursday and into Friday the 21st, the swell tries to build. Friday morning sees 7ft from the north, but it’s short period (8 seconds) and the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph. The combined energy hits 675, which is moderate-strong, but the quality is poor – lumpy and choppy. That’s more of a kitesurfing setup than a paddle session.
The weekend stays similar. Saturday the 22nd has 5ft to 5ft north-northeast swell, but the wind stays cross-onshore, keeping it messy. Combined energy is in the 300s, but the waves are just weak and wind-affected. By Sunday the 23rd, the swell drops to 4ft, period still short, and the wind goes cross-shore. Still poor.
After that, it’s a long dry spell. From Monday the 24th all the way through to Wednesday the 3rd of September, the swell barely hits 3ft, and most days it’s below 2ft. Combined energy sits under 50 for most of that. There are a few moments with clean winds – like the 31st of August Monday afternoon, glassy conditions with 0.3ft and 9 second period – but you’d be hard-pressed to get wet.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird there. And crowds? Whitby can be busy, but with this outlook, you’ll have the place to yourself.
Bottom line: this is a blank run. The area is known for this – it goes flat and stays flat for days. Keep an eye on it; forecasts can change, but right now, leave the board at home.
