The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest right off the bat – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We’ve got a long stretch ahead with very little to get excited about. The only real window with any kind of rideable waves is right at the start, and even then, it’s a short-lived, so-so affair.
The first bit of hope comes on Sunday, August 23rd at Whitby. We’re looking at a small, weak swell rolling in from the NNE, about 4 ft with a short, choppy period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is only moderate (216), so it’s not going to have much punch. But here’s the thing – the morning is looking glassy with a light offshore wind. That’s the big draw. For a short window, those waves will be clean and smooth. It’s a consistent spot, so there’ll be something to ride, but the quality is just “ordinary” at best. This is the only thing that comes close to a recommendation, and it’s only for the most patient of surfers.
After that Sunday morning, it’s a desert. From the afternoon of the 23rd all the way through to the end of the forecast on September 6th, the waves are mostly tiny, weak, and blown out by cross-onshore winds. The swell energy drops right off to weak values (between 5 and 131), with periods so short the waves will just be lumpy and weak. The wind isn’t cooperating, and the swell direction is all over the place. There’s nothing worth paddling out for.
So, if you’re desperate, you could try to get a session in on Sunday morning the 23rd. The water temp is about average for this time of year. That’s your one and only chance. After that, you might as well wax the board and stare at the horizon. The forecast could change, but right now, it’s a blank run.
Rusty.
