The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let me have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty flat and frustrating stretch ahead for Whitby. We’re looking at a solid block of poor surf conditions that hangs around for nearly the whole 16-day window. There’s a big gap from now until Monday the 24th of August where there’s nothing really worth paddling out for.
The first bit of anything that’s even rideable shows up on Monday morning, the 24th of August. We’ve got a tiny 3ft swell from the NNE, but the wind goes glassy – that’s a rare gem for this period. The energy is weak (99), but with dead calm winds, the surface will be like a mirror. It’s not going to be epic, but it’ll be clean. Whitby is a beach/pier setup, and with the wind off, it might offer up a few fun little runners. Just don’t expect much push.
After that, it’s a downhill slide again. The rest of the week and into September is all tiny waves or onshore junk. A couple of mornings around the 27th and 28th of August see clean conditions with light offshore or glassy wind, but the swell drops to 2ft or 2ft – really small stuff. The energy is almost non-existent (29 and 17). You’d be on a foamie or a longboard, and even then, it’s a battle.
The only slight glimmer is very early on the 1st of September, with a fresh offshore wind from the SW, but that swell is pathetic at 1ft.
Bottom line: the water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild there. But for surf? It’s a write-off. This is one of those blank runs that just happens in this area. Don’t hold your breath; forecasts can change, but right now, you’re better off doing something else.
