The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m lookin’ at the next 16 days for Whitby, and honestly, it’s a rough patch. The first few days are tiny and junk. There’s some size later, but it’s a mess.
We start on Thursday the 16th with a puny 1ft swell from the NNE, period of 6 seconds – that’s weak, short-period dribble. The combined energy is a measly 8, and with a cross-on wind, it’s just poor. Friday the 17th is no better: 2ft to 3ft, still short period, and a moderate cross-on breeze. Choppy, no good. Saturday the 18th sees a jump to 5ft to 6ft, NNE swell, period of 7 seconds, but the wind is a fresh cross-on. The energy climbs to 254 to 327, but the wave comment says it all – poor surf conditions. Too lumpy for a good time.
Sunday the 19th is the biggest swell of the whole run, with 8ft on the morning from the NNE, period of 10 seconds, and energy hitting 983. That’s a solid, moderate groundswell, but the wind is still cross-on at 15 mph. The morning is rated poor, and the afternoon is only marginal. This is a big, messy wave. For a beach/pier setup like Whitby, the long period (10 seconds) will make it a bit walled and tough to handle. The water temperature is 59°, which is about normal for this time of year, the anomaly is only 2° above average, so nothing unusual.
The next few days are a slow decline. Monday the 20th has 4ft to 5ft, but the wind is onshore or cross-on, so it’s choppy. Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd, and Thursday the 23rd all have tiny swell under 3ft, with cross-shore winds. The energy is well under 100 – weak stuff. The best of a bad bunch is Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th. On Friday, we get 3ft from the NNW with a cross-offshore wind of 12 mph, and it’s described as “clean.” Energy is still only 94, but it’s the cleanest it’s been. Saturday morning the 25th has 4ft from the N, period 8 seconds, cross-off wind, and energy of 164 – still clean, but still small. That’s the only real window for a session, and even then, it’s not great.
After that, from Sunday the 26th right through to Wednesday the 30th, the swell drops to tiny 0.5ft to 2ft – total flat spell. The wind is mostly cross-off or offshore, but with no wave size, it’s pointless. The energy is mostly single digits. Finally, on Friday the 31st, we see a 5ft to 5ft swell from the N, period 7 seconds, energy 212 to 239. But the wind is cross-shore on the morning and onshore in the afternoon, so it’s back to messy.
The only standout in this whole 16-day period? Without a doubt, Saturday the 25th morning. It’s the best combination of size (4ft), clean wind (cross-off), and moderate energy (164). It’s not a classic, but it’s the only window where the surf is even rideable without being blown out. The crowds at Whitby are often there, so expect company. But for a clean 4ft wave with an 8-second period, it’s worth a look.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. There’s a tiny glimmer on Saturday the 25th, then a long flat spell until the 31st, but that’s messy again. The 16th to the 31st is mostly a forgettable run. If you’ve got a surfboard, leave it in the car for that Saturday morning.
