Right then, let's have a look at what's on the cards for Whitby over the next couple of weeks. I've got to be straight with you – it's a pretty bleak run for the most part. We're looking at a good ten days or so where the surf is just not worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross or onshore, and the energy is weak. From Sunday 5th July right through to Wednesday 15th July, it's all "poor surf conditions" with wave heights barely cracking 2ft to 3ft. The combined swell energy is just a handful of digits (6 to 80) – it's flat, or very close to it. There's a little bump of moderate energy on the 13th and 14th (up to 249), but it's cross-onshore and choppy, so it's messy.
The water temp is around 58°F, which is about what you'd expect for the time of year.
Then, things start to look a bit more interesting. Thursday 16th July still isn't great, but from Friday 17th July we finally get some proper offshore wind from the SW. The swell is still small – 2ft to 3ft – but it's clean, especially on Friday afternoon with a fresh offshore breeze. Saturday 18th July sees a bit more size, with 5ft from the north, but the wind is cross-off. The energy is building, with a combined swell energy of 216-221 – moderate stuff.
The real standout, the one that gets my heart pumping a little, is Sunday 19th July. We've got a light offshore wind from the SW in the morning, and then Sunday afternoon goes glassy – dead calm. The swell is 3ft to 4ft from the north, with a period of 8 seconds, and combined energy of 134-138. It's not huge, but those clean, glassy conditions at Whitby’s beach/pier are a rare treat. It’s the best bet of the whole outlook.
After that, Monday 20th July brings a bigger pulse of swell – 5ft from the north with a 10-second period and a combined energy of 432. That's proper power for Whitby, but it's cross-onshore and choppy, so it'll be a battle. That size (5ft) is right on the edge of being too much for beginners, but for a strong intermediate, it could be worth a look if you don't mind the chop.
So there you have it. A long, quiet week and a bit, followed by a day or two of hope. Sunday 19th July is your day – set the alarm.
