The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on offer.
Alright, straight up, the next week and a bit is pretty grim. We're looking at a long stretch of poor conditions from now until through the end of July. The wind is mostly cross-onshore, chopping everything up, and the swell is small and weak. It's a bit of a bummer, but it is what it is.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Friday, the 24th of July. The morning session at White Rocks is looking like a proper standout. We've got a clean 4ft swell coming from the NW, with a period of 10 seconds giving it a bit of push. More importantly, the wind is light and cross-offshore, so the face will be clean. The combined wave energy is moderate (217). The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 59°. This is a beginner-friendly break, and it's fairly consistent, so it's a good chance for a fun session. The crowds are sometimes an issue here, so getting out early is a good idea.
The next decent window is the weekend of the 25th and 26th of July. Saturday morning, the 25th, has a solid 5ft NW swell, but it's a bit of a mixed bag. The wind is cross-off and light, keeping it clean, but the forecast is marginal due to tide. The swell period is 11 seconds, which is a long period groundswell, capable of good shaped waves. The energy is strong (617). However, that size is pushing it for beginners.
Saturday afternoon is similar, with a 5ft swell and clean conditions, but again, it's marginal. By Sunday the 26th, the wind swings back onshore, and the quality drops right off again.
The outlook for the very end of the period is nothing special. There's a tiny window on Friday, the 31st of July, with a small, clean 2ft NW swell, but it's really just ordinary. The 1st of August is back to choppy junk.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The standout is Friday morning, the 24th of July, at White Rocks. It's not the biggest swell, but the clean conditions will make it the best on offer. Saturday, the 25th, has more size but is a bit more iffy. Keep an eye on that one.
Rusty.
