The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for White Rocks over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it’s a slow start. We’re looking at a pretty flat and uninspiring stretch from Sunday the 23rd all the way through to Tuesday the 25th. The swell is tiny, mostly under 1ft, with weak energy (13 to 33) and the wind is all over the place – cross, light cross-off, and a bit of onshore. The water temp is sitting at 60° with a small anomaly of 1°, so pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year. Honestly, the only thing breaking here is the waiting game.
Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th aren’t any better – still small, messy, and the wind picks up with a fresh breeze on Wednesday. There’s a bit of a pulse on Saturday the 29th afternoon, with a 4ft NW swell, but the period is a short 6 seconds and the wind is cross, so it’s lumpy and poor. Not worth paddling out for.
Sunday the 30th sees a rise in swell – 7ft from the NW (period 8 seconds) and moderate energy (542), but the wind is cross-on from the NW, so it’s choppy and messy. That theme continues into Monday with strong onshore winds. For the experienced kiters out there, the setup on Sunday and Monday might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing – lots of wind and chop.
We finally get a glimmer of hope on Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning is marginal, but Tuesday afternoon shows a clean 4ft WNW swell (period 9 seconds) with a light breeze and cross-off wind. The energy is moderate (236) and the surf is looking good. That’s the first real standout of the forecast.
But the real highlight? That’s Saturday the 5th of September. The morning shows a solid 6ft WNW groundswell (period 11 seconds) with clean offshore winds from the south. The energy is strong (907). By the afternoon, it’s 7ft from the same direction, offshore winds holding, and the energy jumps to 1045. That’s excellent surf for experienced surfers. This is the best on offer, no question. The longer period (11 seconds) means better shaped waves with more energy pushing through, so sets will be lined up.
Sunday the 6th is still good but a bit windier in the morning, with a fresh offshore and 7ft swell (period 12 seconds, energy 1277). The afternoon turns less clean, so the Saturday window is the one to lock in.
After that, Monday the 7th gets blown out by a near gale, so we’re done.
So, the call is: it’s a long wait, but Saturday the 5th of September at White Rocks is the standout. Get it while it’s clean.
Rusty.
