The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming for the only break on the cards.
To be straight up with you, it’s a pretty lean period ahead for White Rocks. The next week and a half is basically a write-off for anything worth paddling out for. The earliest sniff of something remotely rideable doesn’t show up until Friday, 24 July, and even then it’s marginal. So you’re looking at over a week of nothing from the start of the forecast window until that Friday.
From 14 July right through to Thursday, 23 July, it’s almost all poor surf conditions. Tiny swell, weak energy readings mostly below 100 (33 being the highest in the early days, then dropping to single digits), and cross-onshore or cross winds chopping things up. There’s a morning on Thursday, 16 July that goes glassy with a light north breeze, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3 ft – you’d be floating around on a lake. So don’t bother until the end of the month.
Now, Friday, 24 July: things get interesting, but not ideal. The swell jumps to 6 ft in the morning, coming from the NW with a period of 13 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell with good energy (combined energy of 1067), so there’s some push. But the wind is cross-onshore from the NW, which will put a bit of chop on it. The afternoon bumps to 7 ft (1246 energy), same wind issue, and the score is low. This one’s for the experienced crew only – too big for beginners, and the onshore wind will make it a bumpy ride. Not a standout.
The real standout comes on Saturday, 25 July. White Rocks wakes up with a glassy morning – light southerly wind, clean as a whistle. Swell sits at 5 ft from the NW, period 11 seconds, combined energy of 573. That’s moderate energy, clean conditions, and the swell direction matches the optimum NW nicely. Afternoon stays glassy with a bit less size at 4 ft (382 energy). This is your window. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual. Crowds? This spot can get a few heads, but with conditions this clean, expect some company. For the experienced surfer, the Saturday morning is the pick of the whole outlook.
Sunday, 26 July and Monday, 27 July see the size hold around 4 ft to 4 ft, but the wind swings cross-onshore and choppy again, so quality drops. Monday afternoon does see a brief period of offshore wind from the SSW with clean waves, but it’s not as good as Saturday.
The second week beyond that looks small and weak again, with nothing to get excited about.
So, if you’ve been waiting, keep your board waxed for Saturday, 25 July. That’s your day.
