The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for White Rocks over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you—this stretch is a tough one. We’re looking at a solid run of poor surf conditions that lasts from Friday, July 17th, all the way through to Friday, July 24th. That’s over a week of choppy, cross-onshore junk with weak swell energy. The wind is mostly out of the NNW to NW, blowing 18 to 22 mph, and the swell is small—rarely cracking 4 ft—with a short, weak period around 5 to 7 seconds. The combined energy is mostly in the low triple digits at best, like 105 (moderate) on the 17th, but then it drops into the weak 60s and 70s. It’s just not worth paddling out.
Now, the water temp on the 17th sits at 59°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year—about 2° above average. That’s a nice little bonus, but the wind is ruining the party.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday, July 25th, in the morning. This is the standout for the whole outlook. White Rocks gets a clean 6 ft swell from the NW, with a 10-second period. The wind is a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the SSW at 9 mph, keeping things clean. The combined energy jumps to 615 (strong). That’s a proper groundswell, and the 10-second period means it’ll have some shape and power. The water is still likely a touch warmer than normal, and the crowd factor is “sometimes”—so you might have a few locals out, but nothing crazy. The swell direction matches the optimum from the NW perfectly. This is the one to aim for. Just keep in mind, 6 ft is solid—it’s not for beginners, but it’s real fun for the rest of us.
The afternoon of the 25th drops off a bit—still 6 ft, but the wind swings to a light cross-onshore from the NW, and the energy drops to 557 (strong). It’s still surfable, but the morning window is the clear winner.
After that, things go back downhill. Sunday, July 26th through Monday, July 27th sees a bit more swell—6 ft to 6 ft from the NW, with periods of 9 to 10 seconds, and energy in the 500 to 700 range—but the wind is cross-onshore or cross-shore, and the conditions are described as choppy or lumpy. The morning of the 27th is a marginal call, with a cross-shore wind and 6 ft swell, but it’s not clean enough to recommend.
The rest of the second week (July 28th to August 1st) is a write-off. Wind is up, swell stays moderate, and the quality is poor. The energy levels drop back into the low-to-mid triple digits, and the wind is fresh and lumpy. Nothing to get excited about.
So, the takeaway: if you’re a regular at White Rocks, you’ve got a long wait. The one true standout is the morning of Saturday, July 25th. That’s your window. The swell is solid, the wind is right, and the waves will have some punch. Just don’t expect much else for the rest of the 16 days.
Rusty.
