The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. It’s been a quiet stretch around White Rocks, and honestly, this outlook is a slow starter. We’re looking at a 16-day run starting now, but don’t get too excited for the first week and a half—there’s hardly anything worth paddling out for until the second Saturday.
The pattern’s pretty flat. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of August, it’s tiny, messy, or just plain wind-affected. Water temp’s sitting at 60°, which is about a degree warmer than usual—nothing wild, but a touch mild. Most of this period is small windswell with periods under 8 seconds, and the combined energy is weak (29 to 18), so you’re looking at knee-high slop with cross-onshore chop. Not worth the drive.
Monday the 24th morning shows a brief flicker of hope: a 4ft NW groundswell with an 11-second period and clean light cross-offshore wind. The combined energy bumps up to 314 (moderate), and the wind is light. It’s the best of a bad lot early on, but the score is only a 2, so keep your hopes in check. White Rocks is a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent, and crowds are only sometimes an issue, but here the swell direction is NW, which is near the optimum, so you might snag a few peeling waves. Still, with only that one session showing promise, it’s a one-hit wonder.
Then we hit another dry spell. From the 25th through to the 4th of September, it’s back to tiny waves (mostly under 3ft) with moderate winds and poor conditions. The energy stays in the double digits or low triple digits, and the wind often shifts cross-onshore. There’s a couple of mornings on the 2nd and 3rd with offshore winds, but the swell is just too small (2–2ft) and weak (67–100) to do much with.
Now, the real standout arrives on Saturday the 5th of September. This is the one to circle. White Rocks gets a solid 7ft WNW groundswell with an 11-second period—long-period energy that’ll wrap in nicely. The combined energy jumps to 980 (strong to very strong), and the wind is moderate offshore from the SSE, keeping it clean. That’s a proper autumn push. This is an exposed spot, and with that size (over 5ft), it’s getting into intermediate-to-expert territory—beginners might find it a bit much. But for anyone who’s comfortable in bigger surf, this is the best on offer across the whole outlook. The long period (11 secs) means set waves will have good shape and power, and the gaps between sets make paddling out easier.
After that, Sunday the 6th is back to small and lumpy—3–3ft with fresh cross-winds and weak energy (87–116). The window closes quick.
So overall, if you’ve got the patience, hold out for that Saturday the 5th. It’s the only real standout in the whole 16 days. The rest is mostly skunk city. But hey, forecasts change—don’t write the whole window off just yet.
Rusty.
