The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the coming weeks.
Honestly, the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a fair gap of poor conditions before anything really worth paddling out for shows up. The first proper surf worth mentioning is a bit of a tease, but it’s a long way off.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday the 24th of August. The swell is coming from the NW at 4ft, with a long period of 11 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The winds are light offshore from the SSE, so the face will be clean. The water temp is sitting at 60°F which is about normal for this time of year. The combined energy of all swells directed here is moderate (357). That Monday morning session at White Rocks is the standout option in the whole window. It’s not huge, but it’s the best we’ve got.
Now, if you’re patient and can wait even longer, there’s another one to keep an eye on. Later on Monday the 31st of August, the swell bumps up to 6ft from the NW, but the period drops to 7 seconds. That’s a short-period wind swell, and with the wind staying light and cross-offshore, it’ll be clean but a bit lumpy. The energy is moderate (293). That’s a bit of a gamble, but if you’re desperate for a wave that’s bigger than a ripple, it’s an option. Then, into Wednesday the 2nd of September, the morning looks clean again with a 4ft NW swell at 8 seconds and a gentle offshore breeze. The energy is moderate (203). It’s getting into the second week, so treat these long-range calls with a grain of salt, but I’d be watching that 2nd of September morning.
So, the call is: there’s some decent, clean, smaller surf on offer, but it’s mostly a waiting game. The best bet is that Monday the 24th morning session. For the rest, it’s a lot of blown-out, messy, or just tiny conditions. The water’s about average for the time of year.
Rusty.
