The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for White Rocks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a real slow start. The first few days are a write-off. We've got a lot of onshore wind and small, weak junk to deal with. It’s gonna be a quiet stretch until we see some life later in the run.
Now, the first real glimmer of hope shows up on Monday morning, August 24th. The swell is about 4 ft out of the NW, and finally, those winds have clocked around to a light SSE breeze which is cross-offshore. That’s clean. This is a groundswell too, with a long 11 second period. This kind of energy (396) will set up some decent lines, though it might be a bit straight for a beach break, but the quality is there for sure. It's the first proper window, so if you can sneak out, this is your best bet for a good session.
Thursday morning, August 28th brings a bump in swell but ugly wind. 22 mph WNW cross-on breeze makes for lumpy, blown-out conditions with about 3 ft of swell. That’s a hard pass for paddling – might be more of a kiter's day if that's your thing. We get a few more of those messy, windy days before the next real standout.
Hold onto your board for Sunday, August 30th. This is the pick of the entire forecast. We've got a solid 7 ft swell out of the NW for the afternoon session, which is a proper size – one for the experienced crew. The wind is a gentle 9 mph SE breeze, making it cross-offshore and glassy. The wave energy is cranking at 809, and a 9 second period on that size will give it some grunt. That’s a very good session on the cards.
The window closes quickly after that. Monday, August 31st morning is surfable with 3 ft from the WNW and a light S offshore, but it’s just ordinary. We then hit another quiet patch running into September.
There is one final event to flag for the bold. Wednesday morning, September 3rd has a big 7 ft NW swell on the charts (energy 1035), but the wind is a messy 12 mph WNW cross-on. For a spot like this, that wind will kill it. It's a marginal call, only for the experts who don't mind a chop.
So, to sum it up: hold tight through the first week, the real action is on Monday August 24th morning for the first clean one, and Sunday August 30th afternoon is the absolute standout. After that, we're looking at a long, quiet spell.
Rusty.
